Locals who frequent a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospital in Zhengzhou, Henan province, are often surprised when they are treated by a German doctor specializing in TCM with fluent Henan dialect. He is Joel Mikael Walker, a master’s student nearing graduation in the Henan University of Chinese Medicine. He skillfully performs techniques such as acupuncture (针灸), pulse diagnosis, and cupping therapy.
Walker came to Henan province in 2015 when he was 20, because it is widely considered to be an important center for medical practice, education and research for traditional Chinese medicine. Now, he has fully adopted the lifestyle in Henan. On Chinese social media platforms, Walker is committed to promoting traditional Chinese medicine.
His expertise in TCM fascinates Chinese netizens and he often uses ancient Chinese medical texts, for example, Huangdi Neijing, one of Chinese great medical works, to explain the philosophy behind the treatments. Other Chinese classics, such as Yijing, Zhuangzi, and Lunyu, which have long been foundation of Chinese philosophy, are also on Walker’s reading list. He takes pleasure in absorbing ancient wisdom because he finds many ideas deeply intertwined (交织) with TCM practices.
One fundamental worldview of TCM highlights the balance, from which Walker himself benefited. In the past, he experienced significant emotional ups and downs, and tended to be somewhat stubborn, often viewing things from his own perspective. Now he has become more tolerant and approached issues from multiple angles with a more inclusive (包容的) perspective. In other words, his personality has also become more balanced.
According to Walker, the unique wisdom rooted in Chinese culture can not only benefit physical well-being but can also extend beyond medicine and offer excellent guidance for the whole world. He stressed, “If more people could understand the TCM wisdom, the world would become more peaceful.”
4. What do we know about Walker?
A. He is surprised at the locals’ dialect.
B. He has gained a master’s degree in Henan.
C. He has great skills of making acupuncture needles.
D. He is a German good at traditional Chinese medicine.
5. Why did Walker come to Henan province?
A. He intended to be popular online. B. Henan province is a centre for TCM.
C. He desired to learn about its lifestyles. D. Henan province has rich natural resources.
6. What is the purpose of mentioning Walker’s emotional experiences?
A. To show his positive changes. B. To prove the world is more peaceful.
C. To introduce Chinese ancient classics. D. To share his ups and downs with the netizens.
7. Which of the following best describes Walker?
A. Enthusiastic and kind. B. Courageous and calm.
C. Cooperative and generous. D. Devoted and professional.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. “We demonstrate that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery reveals that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously assumed. As a consequence, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sorrowful, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data indicate that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
8. According to the passage, how do Easterners usually look at faces to read expressions?
A. They look at the whole face evenly.
B. They pay most attention to the eyes.
C. They focus equally on the eyes and the mouth.
D. They move their attention between different features quickly.
9. What were the subjects asked to do in the study?
A To make their faces impressive. B. To observe the researchers’ faces.
C. To classify certain facial images. D. To make their eyes move in a specific pattern.
10. What are Easterners likely to do when compared with Westerners?
A. Examine the eyes more attentively. B. Perform translation more skillfully.
C. Focus more on the mouth frequently. D. Read facial expressions more accurately.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Eye Serving as a Window into the Soul. B. Cultural Distinctions in Interpreting Emotions.
C. How to Promote Cross-cultural Understanding. D. Effective Approaches to Developing Social Skills.
D
Life as an astronaut has various unique attractions. This can include experiencing weightlessness and looking back at Earth as a pale blue dot. Food is not among them. Space travelers over the years have become used to certain foods such as freeze-dried ice cream and liquid salt and pepper. Now, the menu is set to be augmented, with the first space-grown lettuce (生菜) found to be as safe, nutritious and fresh as the Earth-grown variety.
Gioia Massa of NASA Kennedy Space Center is the lead scientist on the lettuce-growing project. She said that growing food in space could be wonderful for astronauts on missions lasting more than one month. “If you store packaged food for a long time, not only will the flavour and nutritional quality decrease, but the vitamins will degrade. After eating such food, astronauts’ intake of nutrition is not ensured,” she said. “Besides, for them, there may also be psychological benefits of growing and looking after plants.
Lettuce has been grown in batches (分批) onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The vegetable production system is known as Veggie. It is composed of plant pillows (sealed units containing ceramic soil), LED lighting and a watering system that allows astronauts to inject water through a tube. The lettuce crops grow undisturbed for 33 to 56 days before being harvested and eaten, or deep-frozen and returned to Earth for chemical and biological analysis.
The space-grown lettuces are similar in make-up to Earth-grown ones but they have higher levels of bacteria (细菌), possibly due to their growth in a warmer, more humid (潮湿的) and closed-air system. But they are not found to carry any harmful bacteria.
NASA is now enlarging the range of produce grown onboard the ISS. It will be quite some time before any vegetables can be transformed into a dish, however. “While we have nowhere to cook up there now, we can look forward to more things that taste fresh,” Massa explained.
12. What does the underlined word “augmented” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Enlarged.
B. Engaged.
C. Reduced.
D. Measured.
13. What do we know about growing space-grown lettuce?
A. It’s flavor and nutritional quality decline.
B. It is terrible for astronauts on missions.
C. It can contribute to astronauts’ mental health.
D. It will make sure the astronauts’ intake of nutrition.
14. What can we infer from the text?
A. Lettuces will be grown in batches onboard.
B. The vegetable production system consists of three parts.
C. It will take at least 56 days to harvest the space-grown lettuce crop.
D. Thanks to growing environment the space-grown lettuces don’t contain any harmful bacteria.
15. What does Massa mainly intend to explain in the last paragraph?
A. The difficulty in growing produce onboard.
B. The necessity to enlarge the space onboard.
C. The desire to enjoy cooked vegetables onboard.
D. The expectation to enrich the variety of produce grown onboard.

I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.
He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said.
The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’s your problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.
During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.
Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Other Chinese classics, such as Yijing, Zhuangzi, and Lunyu, which have long been foundation of Chinese philosophy, are also on Walker’s reading list. Now he has become more tolerant and approached issues from multiple angles with a more inclusive (包容的) perspective. In other words, his personality has also become more balanced.

A. To make their faces impressive.

D. Thanks to growing environment, the space-grown lettuces don’t contain any harmful bacteria.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. D

【答案】 Embracing AI Assistants Wisely
Recently, more classmates have turned to AI assistants for academic tasks. While AI tools boost efficiency and offer instant solutions, over-reliance risks undermining independent learning. Students may grow dependent, losing opportunities to hone critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
To maximize benefits, I suggest using AI as a supplementary tool rather than a replacement. Set clear goals before seeking AI help — for example, verify answers after attempting tasks independently. Additionally, allocate time for self-study to strengthen foundational knowledge and self-discipline.
By striking a balance between technology and personal effort, we can harness AI’s potential without compromising academic growth.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over.

【答案】At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. Not wanting him to feel left out, I walked over and sat down beside him. “Hey Germy,” he said. “My name is Jamie.” I replied. I wanted to apologize for starting that rumor about him, but I was too ashamed to say it out loudly. “Del, do you want to play kickball with us?” I asked instead. He looked surprised but happy at the same time. After a moment of silence, he nodded his head.
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. I stood up and shouted to the other kids, “Guys, come here! Let’s play kickball together! ” Some of them hesitated, but they eventually joined us. Del was smiling again and so were we. As we played, I realized that Del wasn’t as bad as I thought he was. He was just a normal kid who wanted to have fun and be accepted by others. From then on, whenever someone tried to start a rumor about him, I would stand up for him and tell them the truth about Del. We became good friends, and I learned an important lesson about judging people based on rumors.
