Is there anything strange high up in the world’s tallest mountains? If so, is it a big bear? Is it a monkey? Or is it a kind of man? No one knows. This mystery has puzzled (困惑) the world for years.
In 1887, a mountain climber found large footsteps (脚印) in the snow. They looked like the footsteps of a very large man. But men couldn’t walk without shoes in the snow!
In 1906, another climber saw more footsteps. He saw a very large animal standing on two legs. As he watched, it ran away very quickly. Fifteen years later, a newspaper had new stories about the “something”. A mountain climber said he had seen the “snowman” walk slowly in the snow. He said it looked like a very large man.
From then on, more and more people had stories to tell. But not until 1951 did a mountain climber bring back the pictures of large footsteps. The pictures showed clearly that the snowman walked on two legs. So it was not a bear or a monkey. Could it be an ape-man (猿人)? And the mystery keeps growing. Someday, we may find out just what it is that makes the largest footsteps.

Last weekend, our family went to have Christmas dinner in a restaurant. We were the only family with a baby in the restaurant. Suddenly, my baby, Erik, became excited when we were enjoying our meal. I looked around and saw an old man with old clothes and dirty old shoes. His hair was unwashed. He was smiling at my Erik.
“He might hurt my Erik,” I thought. Everyone in the restaurant looked at us and the old man. Then we decided to leave. The old man sat between the door and us.
As I walked closer to the man, I turned my back. Suddenly, Erik leaned (倾斜) over my arms, reaching with both arms in a baby’s pick-me-up position. Before I could stop him, Erik had escaped (挣脱) from my arms to the man’s. Soon, the very old, dirty man and my young baby developed a kind of friendship.
Erik put his little hand on the man’s face, and I saw the old man close his eyes and tears run down his face. His aged hands held my baby so gently. A moment later, the old man opened his eyes, passed me my baby and said, “Thank you, Madam. You’ve given me the best Christmas gift.” I cried, with my face burning hot. A child saw a soul (灵魂), but a mother saw only a kind of clothes.
1.What did the writer think of the old man at first?
A.Terrible. B.Friendly. C.Impossible. D.Wise.
2.Why did the family decide to leave the restaurant?
A.They had finished the meal already. B.They had some important things to do.
C.They thought the food there was bad. D.They worried about their baby’s safety.
3.What would the writer do after she cried?
A.Punish the old man. B.Leave the restaurant at once.
C.Say sorry to the old man. D.Call the police.
Behrman was a painter, but a failure in art. Although his life was hard, he had always been about to paint a masterpiece, but had never yet begun it. He made little money by serving as a model to the young artists who could not pay the price of a professional. Among those young artists are Sue and Johnsy.
One day, Sue told Behrman the serious illness of Johnsy. As she lay in bed, she would watch the ivy leaves (常春藤叶) fall from the old vine (藤蔓) outside her window.
“When the last leaf falls,” Sue said in a low voice. “She said that she shall go, too.”
“Foolishness!” Behrman shouted. “Someday I will paint a masterpiece and we shall live a life of success. Got it!”
At night, they paid a visit to Johnsy. She was sleeping at that time. Inside her room, they looked out of the window fearfully at the last leaf on the vine. A cold rain was falling, mixed with snow. The drops were beating heavily against the shaking leaf.
Johnsy woke up the next morning. She found the leaf was still on the vine, brave and green against the gray wall. Another night passed, stormy and cold, but the leaf still survived (幸存).
Not long after, the doctor said Johnsy was out of danger. However, old Behrman passed away because of pneumonia (肺炎).
And that afternoon, Sue came to Johnsy’s bed.
“I have something to tell you, Miss Johnsy,” she said. “Mr. Behrman had been ill for only two days. When he was found by the janitor (门卫), he was helpless with pain. His shoes and clothes were all wet through and icy cold. And then a lantern, still lighted, a ladder and some brushes with green and yellow colors were found. Look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never moved when the wind blew?”

I’m not a fan of patchwork quilts (拼布被子). Surprisingly, however, there is a small patchwork quilt in my home.
This quilt originally (最初) belonged to my mother. She once joined a weekly book club with some women from the neighborhood. In fact, it was more of an excuse to get together and drink coffee. One of the ladies, Emily, made my mother a small quilt.
For years, this quilt sat folded (折叠的) in my mom’s living room. It went with her when she moved to a small room at an assisted living facility (辅助生活机构). I never saw my mother use it throughout all those years. During one of my visits, I asked her why she kept it. She said it was a gift from Emily. I questioned further, as she was not so close to Emily and did not even like the quilt’s design. Her response remained the same: “Because it was from Emily.”
After thinking this over for several days, I realized that the quilt’s value didn’t lie in its appearance or in its maker. It was special because it reminded my mom of being a good neighbor and caring for each other.
I inherited (继承) the quilt more than ten years ago, and it has remained folded on a shelf ever since. My plan is to one day gift it to my daughter, and I hope she will keep it. Patchwork quilts carry stories. The tales we share about our experiences turn everyday things into something special.
1.Why did the writer’s mother join the book club?
A.To write her own book. B.To learn how to make coffee.
C.To discuss her favorite books. D.To get together with her neighbors.

A.The quilt was very expensive. B.Mom loved the quilt’s design a lot.
C.Mom valued the gift from Emily. D.Emily was Mom’s best friend since childhood.
3.Which word best describes the stories behind things like patchwork quilts?
A.Boring. B.Meaningful. C.Common. D.Surprising.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.A Special Gift Made with Care B.A Useless Quilt from My Mom
C.The Unforgettable Story of Emily D.My Mom’s Book Club Memories
Recently, a video has become very popular online. It shows a visitor is letting Ding Ding, a famous chimpanzee (黑猩猩) at Shanghai Wild Animal Park, look at her phone.
In the video, a visitor puts a phone on the glass wall. The phone plays loud music and Ding Ding looks closely at the screen. His face sometimes touches the glass wall while he focuses on the phone. A sign next to the glass wall clearly writes: “STOP! STOP! Do not show me your phone.”
When asked about the video, a staff member of the park said, “It’s hard to say whether he is addicted or not.” The staff said they ask people not to show phones to Ding Ding because it might hurt his health.
The staff further explained that letting Ding Ding look at phone screens for too long might hurt his eyes. “If his eyes get hurt, he can’t tell us or wear glasses like humans. Bad eyesight (视力) might make him stressed and lead to other health problems.”
For Ding Ding’s health, the park urges visitors not to show him their phones—though taking photos is still allowed. Staff members will stop people who show videos to the chimp.
1.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.How Ding Ding reacts to the phone. B.Why visitors show phones to Ding Ding.
C.When the popular video was taken. D.Where Ding Ding lives in the park.
2.What does the underlined word “addicted” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Being afraid of something. B.Being careful with something.
C.Being unable to stop doing something. D.Being interested in studying something.
3.What can we learn from the staff’s explanation?
A.Ding Ding can wear special glasses.
B.Staff will stop all visitors from using phones.
C.Ding Ding can tell the staff about his eyes’ pain.
D.Bad eyesight may cause Ding Ding to feel stressed.
Is it true that plants release (释放) CO₂ during the night and that I should not have one in my bedroom?
You are correct. Plants do release CO₂ at night, although they also release CO₂ during the day.
This is a part of the breathing process! First, you should know that during the day, when there is enough sunlight, plants run a process called photosynthesis (光合作用). This is where they use CO₂, water and sunlight to produce sugar to be used as food.
To use the sugar that plants make through photosynthesis, they need to change the sugar into energy. This process is called breathing. Breathing releases energy from the plant’s sugar, and as a part of this process the plant releases CO₂ and water. So this is where the CO₂ comes from.
Unlike photosynthesis which can only be carried out in the green parts of the plant, like the leaves and stems (茎), breathing can go throughout the plant. It is also a process that is happening all of the time, during both the day and the night! Please do not worry, although plants are in the room. Humans also release CO₂ when we breathe out. One plant is not going to release as much CO₂ as one sleeping person. If we can safely share a room with our partners, we can surely share a room with our plants!
Plants are really good for our health. It has been shown that being with nature can reduce negative (负面的) feelings and increase positive (积极的) feelings. Caring for plants can be very relaxing and it can be an experience of success to see something that you look after grow. Because of that, I’d like you to have one in your bedroom.

Fan Zhendong, one of China’s top table tennis players, started a new chapter in his career after the 2024 Paris Olympics. He joined TTBL (German Table Tennis Bundesliga), the top professional table tennis league in Germany, instead of staying in international competitions like WTT.
Why did he make this choice? For years, Fan has spoken out about problems in international events, such as too many matches that tire players out and unfair distribution of commercial value. By moving to TTBL, he can still compete with world-class players from different countries to keep his skills sharp. At the same time, he hopes to learn from Europe’s professional league experience to help develop China’s table tennis league in the future.
Fan’s journey in TTBL hasn’t been easy. In his first match on August 31, 2025, he lost two games in a row to Ruiz and Duda. But he didn’t give up. He worked hard to improve his receiving skills and quickly got used to the league’s style. Soon, his winning rate rose to an amazing 80%, and he ended the first phase with 4 wins and 3 losses. His excellent performance made him popular—tickets for his first match sold out in just 3 minutes, and his team’s social media gained thousands of new followers. Even TTBL honored him by putting him on the homepage of its 60th anniversary celebration, calling him a “key force for global development.”
Fan Zhendong’s story shows that facing new challenges bravely and learning from difficulties can lead to growth. Whether on the court or in life, his spirit of perseverance encourages young people to keep moving forward.

If you look up in a forest, you may notice something really interesting: the tops of trees don’t actually touch each other. There are few gaps between them, and you can even see the sky through these breaks. This is called “crown shyness (树冠羞避).”
Meg Lowman, a tree expert, explains that it’s a tree’s way to stay healthy. Trees are always fighting with each other for sunlight and water. By keeping a certain distance from each other, they reduce the chance of losing leaves when they brush against neighbouring trees. Leaves are very important, as they help trees get sunlight and water. Also, just like we stay away from sick people, trees keep their leaves from touching other trees. This helps stop harmful insects and diseases from spreading. “Tree sicknesses can come from insects or even be the insects themselves,” Lowman says. “By separating themselves from others, trees protect themselves like we do when we keep our distance from sick people.”
Crown shyness mostly happens in tropical (热带的) trees, but the lessons are also true for other trees. Trees with more space grow bigger and stronger. Lowman says we should take good care of trees, just like we take care of a rose garden. Healthy trees give us better shade, and they clean the water better. “The healthier the forest, the more benefits the owner will get,” says Lowman. “When a tree gets sick, don’t just cut it down. Trees support many living things like insects and birds,” the expert adds.
So next time you see trees, remember: they teach us to be good neighbours.
1.How does the author tell us the trees’ way to stay healthy?
A.By telling a story. B.By listing numbers.
C.By asking questions. D.By giving an example.
2.Why do trees keep their leaves from touching other trees?
A.Trees are always fighting for sunlight and water, so they grow taller.
B.Trees should be kept at a distance from sick people.
C.Trees need to stay away from insects and diseases.
D.Trees grow bigger and stronger in tropical areas.
3.What does the underlined word “shade” mean?
A.Cover. B.Wood. C.Advice. D.Energy.
4.What could we possibly learn from trees’ crown shyness?
A.Keep everyone healthy by sharing space wisely.
B.Take good care of a rose garden and sick trees.
C.Go to the forests and find something interesting.
D.Try to be good neighbours wherever you are.
Ping-pong has been played for many years and is popular around the world. The sport is beginner-friendly. But it also keeps a rich level of competitive play. However, it’s difficult for blind people to experience the joy of this sport.
Phoebe Peng, an engineering student in Australia, invented a new system to help the blind play ping-pong using sound. She installed (安装) cameras and loudspeakers on sides of a traditional ping-pong table. As the cameras tracked (追踪) the movement of the ball, a computer program changed that information into sound, which was played through the loudspeakers. The blind players could use the sound to know the ball’s location, and then they could return the ball fast and correctly.
Peng showed her work on December 6 at the Acoustics 2023 Sydney. It was held from December 4 to December 8 at the International Convention Center Sydney.
Although this system worked well, Peng said, “More study is needed before it can be ready for actual play.” “A challenge is the matter of human perception (感知) of sound,” said Peng. “What kind of sound should be used? Should the sound be continuous? These are problems we are facing now, but I am sure we can solve them in the near future.”
1.The underlined phrase “this sport” refers to “________”.
A.tennis B.basketball C.ping-pong
2.How did the blind players know where the ping-pong ball was?
A.By imagining the movement of the ball.
B.By talking to the speakers of the computer.
C.By listening to the sound from the loudspeakers.
3.When did the Acoustics 2023 Sydney end?
A.On December 8. B.On December 6. C.On December 5.
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A sport that is very popular all over the world.
B.A system invented to help the blind play ping-pong.
C.A science and technology meeting held in Australia.
①Keeping good relationships can sometimes be difficult. At some point during your school days, you might find yourself facing problems with your friends or teachers. Here is some advice about how you can deal with these problems in a positive way.
②Don’t lose your temper (脾气). Disagreements can happen when there are different points of view. When faced with a disagreement, we often find ourselves getting angry and shouting at each other. This is not a good way to deal with the situation. If you want to settle a disagreement, stay calm (冷静的) and try to be polite to the other person. Anger is a natural feeling, but it is also something you must control if you want to learn responsibility.
③Listen to others. Disagreements often happen when people are selfish (自私的) and do not listen to each other. Before you disagree, make sure you have listened carefully to the other person and have understood what he or she is saying. Then, give your own opinion clearly and calmly. If communication (交流) is open and free, a disagreement does not have to become an argument (争论).
④Talk to your teachers and counsellors (辅导员). Do not be afraid to ask your teachers and counsellors for advice. For example, bullying is not allowed because no one has the right to force others to do something. If you are facing this problem or know another student who is, tell a teacher or counsellor immediately. They can help you find a solution.
⑤Just try these easy and useful ways. You’ll build nicer relationships and enjoy a happier and more wonderful school life every day.

①A bell rings at 7 p.m every evening in Mohityache Avadgaon village, in India, telling people that it is time for everyone to turn off screen devices (设备), like televisions and mobile phones. At 8:30 p.m, the bell rings the second time, telling the 3,000 villagers that screen-free time (无屏幕时间) is over. The leaders of the village introduced it so that young people could focus on their homework and not be influenced by funny videos or phone messages. However, some say that a screen simply allows people to get information—it is not harmful in itself. A person can decide for themselves when to put down a device. So should you set limits (限制) on screen time?
②Yes—screen time should be limited!
③Phones, computers and TV are great ways for getting information and lots of fun. ________ Even if people are chatting on their phone or playing online games together, they can still feel lonely. Screen-free time means people can connect with family and friends in the real world. It’s also a great chance for people to go outside and be active, which is good for their health. Too much screen time can lead to other problems, such as not sleeping properly and being short on creativity.
④No—people can manage their screen time!
⑤Through devices like phones and computers, people can find answers to many questions. Screen time can be productive—you can read great works of literature (文学), discover wonderful facts or read about important things happening in the world. It is great for homework and curious minds. Electronic devices also allow friends and family to stay in touch. So, people should be free to judge for themselves how much screen time they should have.
⑥Now that you’ve read a lot about it, tell us what you think on the website the weekiunior.co.uk/polls. Choose YES if you think screen time should be limited, or NO if you don’t. We’ll show the results next week.

ChatGPT has come out in recent times. Developed by Open AI, it is a large language model that has the ability to produce human-like text responses. ChatGPT has become very popular in the education field recently. A survey in the US showed that more than 1,000 students were asked, and over 89% of them had used ChatGPT to do their homework.
Because of this, some schools in the US, Australia and France have taken action to ban (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. For example, in the US, New York public schools don’t allow students and teachers to use it. When a student is stuck on a difficult math problem or a historical event, ChatGPT can offer step-by-step solutions or descriptions.
At the same time, it has also raised concerns as some students might use it to cheat on tasks and exams, weakening the learning process. There are students who just use ChatGPT to finish their homework without thinking by themselves.
However, teachers are also finding ways to deal with this problem. Some college teachers in the US are changing the forms of homework and exams. They are adding speaking homework and asking students to write more by hand, so that students won’t rely on ChatGPT.
Interestingly, not all educators are against using ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are making rules about how to use it for both students and teachers. They haven’t decided to completely ban the tool yet. Bhaskar Vira from the University of Cambridge thinks that banning AI software like ChatGPT is not a good idea. He said that we should know AI is a tool that people will use and we need to change our learning, teaching and exam methods.
ChatGPT has opened up new possibilities and discussions about the future of AI and its role in our lives. In fact, the rise of ChatGPT has made educators think deeply about how to balance (平衡) the convenience it brings and prevent improper use. Different measures reflect (反映) different attitudes, but the key is to make sure students can learn usefully and develop real skills in this new technological period.
1.Why have some schools in the US banned the use of ChatGPT?
A.Because it takes the place of teachers.
B.Because it can be smarter than humans.
C.Because it provides incorrect information.
D.Because it may be used by students to cheat on homework.
2.How many of them approximately (大约) have used it if there were 1,200 students surveyed?
A.1,000 B.1,068 C.1,100 D.1,150
3.What did some college teachers in the US do to avoid the use of ChatGPT?
A.They suggested laws to ban the use of ChatGPT.
B.They changed the forms of homework and exams.
C.They stopped the students from using the Internet.
D.They asked the students to hand in typed homework.
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.ChatGPT is useless in the education field.
B.Parents are strongly against the use of ChatGPT.
C.Students are not allowed to use ChatGPT for their homework.
D.Some educators think it’s better to make good use of ChatGPT rather than simply stop using it.
5.What’s the structure of the article? (P=paragraph)
A. B. C. D.
Libraries around the world still keep old books hundreds of years old. But will we be able to read today’s digital books in hundreds of years? Librarians are worried. Even now, we can’t open some files (文件) from 20 or 25 years ago. Will our digital works be lost in a digital black hole? Will we face the loss of valuable information?
Technology is changing fast. Old ways of keeping information are gone now, or they are no longer supported by new technology. For example, many people used floppy discs (软盘) to save files years ago, but today few machines can open them. Also, millions of songs and music pieces were saved on tapes or CDs, but now most old music players no longer work. Another problem is that websites often change or close down, and all the information on them can fall into the digital black hole.
Books, however, are quite easy to keep. We don’t need special tools or technology to read them. If you keep them in a dry and safe place, they will stay safe for a long time. Li Shizhen’s great medical book Ben Cao Gang Mu came out in 1593. Amazingly, three copies from the first printing still survive (保存) today. That’s not bad for a book more than 400 years old.
Today, to some researchers, printed books remain a safe way to keep information. In 2014, a professional group began to raise money to print a famous online encyclopedia (百科全书) into 1,000 books. This would make sure that even if digital technology fails, the knowledge can still be kept.
For now, when it comes to storing information, printed copies seem to be the safest choice. However, future technology might develop and provide new ways to solve the problem of the digital black hole. Time will tell.
1.The writer asks questions in the beginning ________.
A.to show the large number of books
B.to ask more information about digital books
C.to draw readers’ attention to the topic discussed
D.to change the worrying situation in libraries around the world
2.What happens if our digital works fall into a digital black hole?
A.They are carefully kept. B.They cannot be understood.
C.They cannot be read or reached. D.They are saved in a wrong place.
3.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.How music players are developing. B.How technology is changing over time.
C.Why old machines are no longer used today. D.Why technology may cause information loss.
4.Why does the writer mention Ben Cao Gang Mu?
A.To discuss why this book is still important. B.To show printed books can last for a long time.
C.To explain how easy it is to keep printed books. D.To tell when the earliest printed book came out.
5.What would the writer most probably agree with?
A.Libraries should keep more digital books.
B.Digital books are less valuable than printed ones.
C.Technology is still looking for better ways to keep information.
D.Technology will soon solve the problem of the digital black hole.
Should Students Have Part-time Jobs?
In many countries, teenagers take part-time jobs to earn pocket money. However, opinions are divided on whether Chinese students should do the same.
Supporters say that a part-time job teaches time management. “When I worked in a bookshop last summer, I learned to plan my day carefully,” says 15-year-old Zhang Qi. Jobs can also help students discover their interests. Liu Mei, who helped in a pet hospital, realised she wanted to be a vet in the future. Moreover, earning one’s own money builds confidence.
On the other hand, opponents worry about safety. Some employers may hire students illegally and make them work long hours. Another concern is grades. “After I started tutoring a pupil on weekends, my maths score dropped by 15 points,” admits Li Hao. Finally, some parents fear that early contact with money may make children materialistic.
In my view, students can take jobs as long as three rules are followed: the work must be safe and legal; the time should not exceed eight hours a week; and parents and teachers must give guidance. With these conditions, part-time jobs can become valuable “social classrooms”.
1.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to find a suitable part-time job. B.Different views on students’ part-time jobs.
C.The history of part-time work for teens. D.A list of safe part-time jobs for students.
2.Why does the writer mention Zhang Qi?
A.To show jobs improve time-management skills.
B.To prove bookshops are the best workplace.
C.To explain why grades may drop.
D.To encourage students to open bookshops.
3.Which of the following is an opponent’s opinion?
A.Jobs help students discover interests. B.Working experience builds confidence.
C.Long working hours may harm study. D.Earning money teaches independence.
4.What does the writer probably agree with?
A.All students should work in pet hospitals. B.Part-time jobs are bad for teenagers.
C.Grades matter more than work experience. D.Safe and limited jobs can benefit teens.
①For teenagers, rules are everywhere—in families, schools, and even communities. But have you ever wondered why rules are so important for your growth? Let’s explore this by looking at different kinds of rules and their roles.
②Family rules are like “safety nets” for teens. For example, “don’t go out alone after 9 p.m.” protects teens from danger, and “share housework” teaches them responsibility. These rules don’t just keep teens safe; they also help build a warm family. When teens follow family rules, parents feel more at ease, and teens learn to care for others.
③School rules, on the other hand, are the “foundation” of a good learning environment. “Listen to teachers in class” helps everyone focus on lessons, and “no fighting with classmates” keeps the school peaceful. Without these rules, classrooms would be noisy, and no one could learn well. Teachers often say that school rules are not to “punish” teens, but to make sure everyone can learn and grow fairly.
④Community rules also play a part. “Don’t litter (丢垃圾) in the park” keeps public places clean, and “follow traffic rules when riding bikes” prevents accidents. These rules teach teens to respect public spaces and other people.
⑤Some teens may complain that rules are “annoying”, but in fact, rules are not there to limit you—they are there to guide you. Good rules help teens become responsible, respectful, and safe. That’s why rules are an important part of growing up.
1.What does the family rule “share housework” help teens learn?
A.How to communicate. B.Responsibility.
C.How to make friends. D.How to study better.
2.School rules are made to __________.
A.limit teens B.punish teens for their mistakes
C.help each other D.help teens learn and grow fairly
3.Which of the following is a community rule?
A. B. C. D.
4.What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A.To teach parents how to make rules. B.To show the students all the rules.
C.To advise the students to follow the rules. D.To make good rules for teenagers.
5.What’s the best structure of the passage?
(①= Para. 1 ②= Para. 2 ③= Para. 3 ④= Para. 4 ⑤= Para. 5)
A. B. C. D.

1.What did the second climber see in 1906?
A.A special bear. B.A very large animal standing on two legs.
C.An ugly monkey. D.A man walking slowly in the snow.
2.What can we know from the text?

B.The snowman walks on four legs.
C.The mystery of what makes the large footsteps is still not solved.
D.The large footsteps must be made by an ape-man.
3.What is the best title (标题) for the text?

Last weekend, our family went to have Christmas dinner in a restaurant. We were the only family with a baby in the restaurant. Suddenly, my baby, Erik, became excited when we were enjoying our meal. I looked around and saw an old man with old clothes and dirty old shoes. His hair was unwashed. He was smiling at my Erik.

【答案】1.C 2.C 3.D 4.B 5.C
