Carhenge, Floralis Genérica, Traffic Light Tree and Hand of the Desert — these are four unusual monuments from around the world you might like to visit. • Carhenge Carhenge is in Alliance, Nebraska (USA). It has a lot in common with Stonehenge. But while Stonehenge was built with stones, Carhenge was created with cars. The monument was made by a local artist Jim Reinders. He used old cars and even an ambulance. At first, the people of Alliance didn’t like it, but they soon changed their minds after it became popular with tourists, who brought lots of money to the town. • Floralis Genérica Floralis Genérica is a massive statue of a flower. It stands in a pool of water in front of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eduardo Catalano, a native of Argentina, gave the statue as a gift to the city in 2002. Every morning, the flower opens. In fact, many people believe it is one of the most beautiful statues in the world. • Traffic Light Tree The Traffic Light Tree is situated at Heron Quay, in one of London’s financial districts. The tree has 75 sets of traffic lights. It was created by French artist, Pierre Vivant, and was installed in 1998. A computer controls the lights, which are turned on and off randomly. • Mano del Desierto (Hand of the Desert) The Hand of the Desert is in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The sculpture was designed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrazabal. From a distance, it looks as if there’s a giant in the sand who has stuck his hand out of the ground. If you’re looking for something new to see, you know where to go! 1. Why did the people of Alliance change their attitude toward Carhenge? A. It reminded them of Stonehenge. B. It brought them financial benefits. C. It added beauty to their community. D. It showed the creativity of the designer. 2. What makes Traffic Light Tree different from the other three monuments? A. It is located in a financial district. B. It was created by a local artist. C. It involves technology in its design. D. It is shaped like a natural object. 3. What do Floralis Genérica and Mano del Desierto have in common? A. They are both located in Asia. B. They were both created by local artists. C. They are both made of stone. D. They both depend on technology to work. B My head was so full of digital noise that it felt like my brain was about to blow up. I had no greater power of concentration than the lifeless stare of a goldfish. As a writer, I was ashamed to admit that my love of books had been compromised (妥协) by a brain that simply could not sit still. So, this year I devoted myself to restoring books to the place that they held in my life before the Internet broke my brain. My goal was 52 books: It seemed like an impossible task. A 400-page book will take the average person around eight hours to read. Finding the time to read was a challenge but here’s how I did it. Firstly, I decided to treat my mind like a misbehaving child who needs some rules laid down. Then I decided that I would read for an hour or two at a time without distraction (分心) each day. It was something I hadn’t done in years and it was scary how difficult it was. In his book, The Distracted Mind, Larry Rosen says that the more we practice spending time away from our electronic devices (设备), the calmer and more focused we become. And this is what I found. Again and again, I would gently bring myself back to the page, resisting the desire to reach for that screen. I took inspiration from Niki Gemmell, who describes in On Quiet, how locking away her family’s devices for long periods had opened up a space for deep reflection (思考). For me, finding that quiet time meant finding time in my day just to read. It was like a date between me and my book. And it meant actively choosing to read at times when I normally would reach for my phone. I read on the tram, at the park, in bed at night and on lunch breaks. By reawakening my love with books I created a sacred space where I could press pause and found inspiration knowledge, reflection and escape. In our modern world, reading is a powerful and beneficial way for us to slow down and be ourselves. 4. What was the first thing the author did to achieve the goal? A. The author went to the bookstore to buy books B. The author decided to make some rules for himself. C. The author was buried in reading for an hour or two at once. D. The author was going to join in some reading groups. 5. What does the author think of electronic devices? A. Useless. B. Harmful. C. Beneficial. D. Distractive. 6. What can we infer about the author? A. The author benefited a lot from reading books. B. The author got inspiration when he reached for the screen. C. The author would rather read books outdoors than indoors. D. The author was reminded to kill time with electronic devices. 7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Falling in love with reading B. Going back to the books C. Escaping from the noisy world D. Leading a slow life C Today's world is not an easy adjustment for young adults. Key skill set for success is persistence (毅力), a characteristic that researchers say is heavily influenced by fathers. Researchers from Brigham Young University discovered that fathers are in a unique position to help their adolescent children learn persistence. BYU professors Laura Padilla-Walker and Randal Day arrived at these findings after following 325 American families over several years. And over time, the persistence gained through fathers led to higher achievement in school. "There are relatively few studies that stress the unique role of fathers,"Padilla-Walker said. "This research also helps to prove that characteristics such as persistence-which can be taught-are key to a child's life success.” Researchers determined that dads need to practice an "authoritative" parenting style. Authoritative parenting is not authoritarian:rigid, demanding or controlling. Rather,an authoritative parenting style includes some of the following characteristics:children feel warmth and love from their father;responsibility and the reasons behind rules are stressed children are given an appropriate level of autonomy(自主权). In the study, about 52 percent of the dads exhibited above-average levels of authoritative parenting A key finding is that over time, children raised by an authoritative father were significantly more likely to develop persistence, which leads to better outcomes in school. This particular study examined 11 to 14-year-olds living in two-parent homes. Yet the researchers suggest that single parents still may play a role in teaching the benefits of persistence, which is an avenue of future research. 8. What is special about the BYU professors' study? A. It centered on fathers' role in parenting. B. It was based on a number of large families. C. It analyzed different kinds of parenting styles. D. It aimed to improve kids' achievement in school. 9. What would an authoritative father do when raising his children? A. Ignore their demands. B. Make decisions for them. C. Control their behaviors. D. Explain the rules to them. 10. Which group can be a focus of future studies according to the researchers? A. Single parents. B. Children aged from 11 to 14. C. Authoritarian fathers. D. Mothers in two-parent homes. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Three Characteristics of Authoritative Fathers. B. Key Skills for Young Adults to Succeed in Future. C. Children Tend to Learn Determination from Father. D. Family Relationship Influences School Performance. D If you want to improve your memory, you need to know how your brain works. You might be surprised to hear that your lifestyle habits might be making it difficult for you to correctly record each piece of information, experience, or learning. It would appear that the secret to improving your memory is really simple. It’s to take breaks. As a matter of fact, the brain has more limited (有限的) energy resources than you probably think. Therefore. it tires quickly and its levels of attention begin to drop after about 30 to 45 minutes. The hippocampus is the area of your brain that’s responsible for consolidating (巩固) your short-term memories in the long term. Furthermore, for this consolidation to be possible, there must be an connection with different areas of the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) . At the present time, we know that, for best connectivity, we must rest. Therefore, factors such as tiredness, bad feelings, or stress make it difficult to connect one area to the other. Michaela Dewar, a researcher at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, conducted a study with other experts to understand how to improve memory consolidation processes. What they found was that something as simple as taking breaks of between 9 and15 minutes improves memory, both in healthy people and in those with neurological damage (神经系统受损) . However, there’s one small detail that’s important. The rest must be real rest. In other words, you should go to a quiet space and give up anything that takes your attention away. This includes not having your cellphone nearby. The secret to improving your memory requires you to rest for between 10 and 15 minutes leaving your mind completely empty. Your lifestyle plays an extremely important role in the way your memory functions (运转) . Rest isn’t wasting time. In fact, allowing yourself small breaks is good for your health and well-being. 12. What is the secret to improving memory? A. Learning about brain. B. Recording every details. C. Having breaks. D. Forming good habits. 13. What factor may influence the connection between different areas of cerebral cortex? A. Satisfaction. B. Sadness. C. Excitement. D. Happiness. 14. What does the underlined word “conducted” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Found. B. Began. C. Produce D. Organised. 15. Where is the text most probably taken from? A. A science report. B. A dictionary. C. A course plan. D. A textbook. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Walking has been considered as one kind of rewarding exercise. For many people, daily walking offers massive and long-term physical and mental benefits. ____16____ A Stanford University study found that people were more creative when walking in comparison with sitting. ____17____ You’ve probably heard the phrase “exercise your creativity”. Our creative mindset is stirred up by physical movement, which is exactly why walking with your dog, a friend, or alone feeds creative thinking. But the scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your habitual surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighborhood. ____18____ Even when you walk down a busy street, you can’t help but get distracted (分心) by the sweet smells from a food cart or the child pointing to a building you haven’t even noticed before. Walking outside develops our ability to collect new ideas and take in new sights, sounds, smells, and flavors. Shinrin-yoku, a common form of relaxation in Japan, suggests that being in the forest and walking among the trees there can lower your stress levels. ____19____ Research has shown that getting close to nature around your neighborhood or taking a break from multimedia increases performance on a creative problem-solving task. So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking outdoors? ____20____ For example, you can turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in a lake. Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder. A. Unfortunately, you often fail to do it B. Step into the outside world more often C. The movement during walking is obviously key. D. Leading a slow life 【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. In the study, about 52 percent of the dads exhibited above-average levels of authoritative parenting. A key finding is that over time, children raised by an authoritative father were significantly more likely to develop persistence, which leads to better outcomes in school. 【答案】8. A 9. D 10. A 11. C. D. Without enough energy, you cannot wonder or create. E. But to receive the benefits, you do not have to live in a forest F. This habit, however, not only benefits fitness but also contributes to creativity. G. Walking around a park and observing people relaxing or birds singing is also a choice. 【答案】16. F 17. C 18. G 19.
