1.(教材P39)Head down,eyes on my smartphone,I stepped into the road and a car shot past,nearly knocking me off my feet!
Head down,eyes on my smartphone为独立主格结构,相当于原因状语。
The other two climbed down into the crater to collect some lava for later study,but this being my first experience,I stayed at the top and watched them.

P39)I felt lost and anxious,as if I had missed of value.
句中as if=as though意为“仿佛,好像”,引导表语从句。常放在be,look,seem,sound,smell,feel等系动词之后。
①表示与现在事实相反,从句谓语动词用过去时(be动词用were);
②表示与过去事实相反,从句谓语动词用过去完成时(had done);
③表示与将来事实相反,从句谓语动词用would/could/might do。
“It looks as if it'll go under soon,”Jim said,after a couple of minutes.
The woman loves the children deeply as if she were their mother.
[名师点津] 如果as if引导的从句的主语和主句的主语一致,并且从句中用be的某种形式,则省略“从句主语+be”,从句就变成了“as if/as though+adj./adv./介词短语/to do/doing/done”。
