I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.
4. What is unavoidable in the author’s rescue work according to paragraph 1?
A. Efforts made in vain.
B. Getting injured in his work.
C. Feeling uncertain about his future.
D. Creatures forced out of their homes.
5. Why was the author called to Muttontown?
A. To rescue a woman. B. To take care of a woman.
C To look at a baby owl. D. To cure a young owl.
6. What made the chick calm down?
A. A new nest. B. Some food. C. A recording. D. Its parents.
7. How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?
A. It’s unexpected. B. It’s beautiful.
C. It’s cruel. D. It’s discouraging.
C
“No!” That’s the word we hear in the latest cute baby video that spreads quickly. But it’s not the words that baby Orla says that have made this video so popular. It’s the fact that her pronunciation clearly mimics that of Liverpool in Britain, which makes her sound more like locals in Liverpool.
This now-famous baby may only have been born in 2022, but the different accents (口音) of babies have been investigated for many years. In 2009 Professor Caroline and her team conducted a study. They compared French babies with German babies and found that French babies tend to cry with a rising tone (声调), while German babies’ cries often have a falling tone. They also found American and French babies reflect syllables (音节) from English and French separately, and that babies with parents who speak a tonal language, like Mandarin, have a greater range of tones in their crying.
So why does this happen? As children develop, they practice making the sounds of the language that they hear around them. It’s natural that they pick up sounds and rhythms around them. In fact, babies start to learn language from their mother about three months before birth. However, it’s not just the language of immediate family and caregivers that has an impact. Caroline’s studies show that children are more likely to learn the accent of their environment than that of a parent who has an accent that is foreign to that location.
What the studies also show is that babies are learning language through practice, and that the more time parents spend interacting with their children, the greater the opportunity for them to learn. While babies may not be able to say many words, studies show that they can understand many times the number of words that they can actually say. Giving babies exposure to a greater number of words allows them to better build their vocabulary.
8. What does the underlined word “mimics” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Corrects. B. Develops. C. Copies. D. Affects.
9. How did Caroline prove the different accents of babies?
A. By making comparisons. B. By presenting opinions.
C. By doing a questionnaire survey. D. By describing an experience.
10. What does paragraph 3 stress?
A. Parents’ special methods of raising children.
B. Several stages of kids’ language development.
C. Home language’s influence on the growth of kids.
D. Surroundings’ role in children’s acquiring accents.
11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Babies’ language ability depends on their ages.
B. Babies can teach themselves a large vocabulary.
C. Babies can speak more words than they can make out.
D. Babies’ interaction with adults is helpful in learning words.
D
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about two billion people eat bugs, or insects, as part of their daily diet. That’s nearly a quarter of the global population, and yet most countries in Europe and North America, despite the nutritional and environmental benefits, are quite unwilling to eat bugs. So why should Westernized countries agree to include bugs in their daily diet?
Eating bugs as a replacement for larger farm animals could contribute greatly to a more sustainable (可持续的) world. Bugs have a high feed-to-product rate and use much less materials than traditional farm animals per pound. According to an article written by the former manager of the Toronto Food Policy Council, Wayne Roberts, “Eatable insects don’t appear on any endangered species lists, and their sustainable use could help protect other wildlife since the approach may contribute to habitat protection.”
The nutritional benefits of eating bugs can be important in fighting childhood deaths, and malnutrition (营养不良) rates. Monica Aiyeko of the Food and Agriculture department at Bondo University College has studied and published the effects of including native crickets into school meal programs in Kenya. Her studies have found that about 30% of Kenyan households are short of food, leading to wide-spread malnutrition among children, particularly under the age of 5. Putting bugs into school feeding programs could provide children with the necessary nutrients to prevent poor growth. Generally, bugs are extremely nutritionally beneficial, rich in protein, omega-3 fats and iron.
The popular Western opinion is best stated by New York Times writer Ligaya Mishan, “Europeans, and European settlers in North America, never had a bug-eating tradition. Indeed, we largely consider insects dirty and related to disease. This is a big misunderstanding that we need to clear up. All I want is a food cultural change, is that so much to ask?”
12. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Endangered bugs taste less delicious.
B. Eating bugs can threaten other wildlife.
C. Bugs need less feed for the same production.
D. Bugs produce less using more materials.
13. What was the main focus of Aiyeko’s study?
A. The general health benefits of bugs.
B. The climbing malnutrition rates among Kenyan kids.
C. The problem of food safety in Kenyan households.
D. The benefits of having bugs in school meals in Kenya.
14. What is Mishan attitude towards bug-eating?
A. Doubtful. B. Favourable. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.
15. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Bugs: a Change in the Menu B. Bugs: an Unwanted Future Choice
C. Bugs: an Unseen Threat to the Crop D. Bugs: a Game-changer in Agriculture

15 Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Bugs: a Change in the Menu B. Bugs: an Unwanted Future Choice
C. Bugs: an Unseen Threat to the Crop D. Bugs: a Game-changer in Agriculture
