Slides are simple but always fun. All you need to do is climb up to the top and slide down. But did you know that there is science behind this simple playground equipment (设备)?
① You climb up the slide and sit down.
You are ready to go. Are you sliding down? No, not yet. Things stay still (静止) unless something makes them ________. It is Newton’s first law. So you have to give yourself a push to start the journey down.
② Now you are sliding down.
Do you feel you are slowing down a bit? When two things rub (摩擦) against each other, they cause friction (摩擦力). Without friction, you will slide down faster and faster to the bottom.
③ At the bottom of the slide, you come to a full stop.
Your feet touch the ground and add extra friction. Newton’s first law also says moving things keep moving unless something makes them stop. So, if you do not use your feet, you’ll fly off the slide.
46. The best word for the blank is ________.
A. Stop B. fly off C. move D. change direction
47. Which picture explains why you slow down a bit when sliding down?

Everyone knows that forests help fight climate change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 300,000 square kilometres of forests in 2024. That’s an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, for the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. ▲ This country has the largest area of rainforest in the world. Last year, it suffered from a long period of dry weather. Wildfires broke out and spread. As a result, about 25,000 square kilometres of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country. This meant fires caused 66% of its forest loss.
The second biggest cause of the world’s forest loss was clearing land for farming. As people need more farmland, they keep cutting down forests every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% worldwide. The situation was more severe in developing countries. For example, Bolivia lost 2.5 times as much forest in 2024 as it did the year before.
Without doubt, something must be done. Experts call on governments, businesses and people to work together before it is too late. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation at many levels, China had the biggest increase in forest area among all countries in 2024. That year alone, newly-planted trees in China covered an area of nearly 45,000 square kilometres, according to a news report. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greener planet.
49. The size of Italy is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to show ________.
A. why we need forests B. where a disaster spread
C. what climate change is D. how terrible forest loss was
50. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 2?
A. Farming is a reason. B. Take Brazil for example.

C. Forest Fires Caused Pollution D. Forest Loss Worried the World

The Taklimakan Desert (塔克拉玛干沙漠) in the Tarim Basin is the largest desert in China.
For a long time, its sand has been moving with the wind and damaging oases (绿洲).
Controlling the sand, keeping soil stable and preventing the spread of sand are some of Xinjiang's biggest ecological challenges.
The journey around the Taklimakan Desert is 3,046 kilometers long. After over 40 years of hard work, a 2,761-kilometer-long green shelterbelt (防护林带) has been built around the desert through the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program. This green shelterbelt is like a “scarf” holding the sand firmly.
The “Three-North” region (Northwest, North, and Northeast China) contains 84% of China’s desertified (沙漠化的) land. The Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program started in 1978 to fight desertification.
*On the morning of November 28, 2024, workers completed the final 10-meter green belt around the Taklimakan Desert, which fully enclosed (围合) the desert.
One important material for making this “scarf” is sand-resistant vegetation In a plant garden in Bayingolin, there are over 200 kinds of plants on 121 hectares of land. Researchers would pick the best ones to plant in the desert to stop the sand.
Besides vegetation, photovoltaic (光伏) sand control methods are used-Solar panels are placed in key areas. They slow down the wind and reduce sand movement. They also generate electricity (发电), meeting the need of the region for energy.
57. What is the main ecological problem caused by the Taklimakan Desert?
A. It pollutes rivers in Xinjiang. B. Its sand destroys oases over time.
C. It blocks the roads of local people. D. Its strong winds harm mountain areas.
58. Why did the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program start in 1978?
A. To build more green parks for tourists.
B To stop deserts from getting bigger.
C. To study different types of desert plants.
D. To make a green “scarf” to make the desert beautiful.
59. What is the advantage (优点) of using solar panels in deserts?
A. They replace the need for planting trees. B. They make the desert cooler for workers.
C They help scientists study desert winds. D. They stop sand moving and produce energy.
60. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Xinjiang’s deserts are becoming tourist attractions.
B. Scientists are discovering new plants in Xinjiang.
C. New cities are being built in deserts in Xinjiang.
D. Xinjiang uses both plants and technology to control deserts.

Chishan Lake Wetland Park is in Anhui Province. It has become home to many different kinds of birds because of its good environment. Every year, a lot of tourists go there to watch the birds. Do you know how to watch the birds? The following advice will help you.
Birdwatchers enjoy looking for and listening to different kinds of birds. To watch the birds, all you need is a pair of binoculars, a field guide and love for birds.
When you are ready, it’s best to go to the wild with some experienced (有经验的) people. You can join a birdwatching group to learn about some skills.
Start birdwatching in the morning when birds are searching for food. Most of the time, you will hear bird calls from all around you, but you will not see any birds easily. Look for movement in trees, and bring your binoculars to your eyes to see more clearly.
The most important work for a birdwatcher is to identify (识别) the birds. A bird’s shape, size, colour and habits can help a birdwatcher identify it. When you identify a bird, don’t forget to take notes about it on your notebook.

A. B. C. D.

根据“Things stay still (静止) unless something makes them…So you have to give yourself a push to start the journey down.”
根据“Do you feel you are slowing down a bit? When two things rub (摩擦) against each other, they cause friction (摩擦力).”
根据文章首段“But did you know that there is science behind this simple playground equipment (设备)?”

C. Wildfires were stopped. D. Read the report carefully.
51. What does the underlined word “severe” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Serious. B. Boring. C. Balanced. D. Positive.
52. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Rainforest Became Larger B. Farmland Area Grew Rapidly
C. Forest Fires Caused Pollution D. Forest Loss Worried the World
D 50. B 51. A 52. D

第二段首先指出火灾是森林损失的最大原因,随后空格后的句子“This country has the largest area of rainforest in the world.”
根据第三段“The situation was more severe in developing countries.”(发展中国家的这种情况更为……)以及前文“the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% worldwide”(全球因农业垦殖而清除的森林面积增加了14%)可知,情况更“严重”。故选A。

B. To stop deserts from getting bigger.
C. To study different types of desert plants.
D. To make a green “scarf” to make the desert beautiful.
59. What is the advantage (优点) of using solar panels in deserts?
A. They replace the need for planting trees. B. They make the desert cooler for workers.
C. They help scientists study desert winds.
