Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane as a common thing. So it
is not unusual for a family to have several full gas cans and bottled water stored in their houses
all summer.Though unwilling to evacuate from a hurricane,on September 15.my family was
forced to leave our home for my grandfather's house several miles away.We spent the early
part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel.Around
nine o'clock,a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off.Soon came
an indoor rainstorm.
Realizing the damage,my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he
still ran out into the heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left.We got him
back inside.I had never seen him so scared.Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.
The leak had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what was
saved. Some people may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save
those items with emotional value, such as the photos.I still feared the storm, but I more
feared the influence it brought.
The next momning,it started to clear up.Thankfully,my family weathered the storm,
though the same could not be said for the house.Only the wooden beams remained, but
inside many of his things were safe.My mom and I had worked tirelessly through the night.
It was late, but we were stiil unwilling to go to bed.We discussed the rebuilding of the
house.Under the.beautiful sky,we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the

New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters
may train cognitive (abilities, which are not developed by learning other
languages and writing systems.
A study conducted by researchers from the UK's Welcome Trust found that people who
speak Chinese use both temporal lobes (of their brain to understand the language.
This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe.
Chinese speakers use intonations (to tell completely different meanings of particular
words,which needs stronger cognitive abilities.
Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the
development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp.
Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, researchers found that neural activity
in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more strengthened than those who
just looked at them.Compared with English, mostly written in line and from left to right,
Chinese characters are more complex in structure.Their writing involves strokes in all
four directions:up,down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps
improve neural activity in the working, thinking, and memory ofthe brain ofthe learners.
Evidence aiso suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and
math skills.Researchers from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their
own languages appear to have gained a greater understanding of math ideas than English-
speaking children.During the natural learning process of Chinese, the student is learning
basic math ideas.Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills
such as counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences.
While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is
not yet fully clear, there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters
represents an added challenge for language learning.

A.English speakers should learn Chinese.
B.Chinese has more intonations than English.
C.Using Chinese needs a higher-level brain activity.

34.Why is learning Chinese beneficial to solving math problems?
A.They need quite different cognitive abilities.

D.They share several key cognitive abilities.
35.How is the text mainly developed?
A.By offering supporting findings.

It's clear that not sleeping enough can make you feel moody and find it hard to think
sharply.
But did you know it can also influence your social life?Lack of good sleep may make it
harder to get along with others and even lower your eagerness to hang out with
friends.36By improving your sleep, adjusting your daily behavior, and eating better,
you can gain more energy and enjoy time with people around you!
Create a calm routine before bed.
A relaxing routine helps your mind and body know it's time to rest. You can take a warm
bath,drink herbal tea,read a book,or do light stretching before sleep.37 Avoid
using digital devices or watching TV right before bed-the screen light can keep you awake.

the air is too dry or too damp,it can affect your sleep.A humidifier or dehumidifier may
help-around 45%humidity is ideal.
Block out light.
Light exposure at night can trick your brain into thinking it's daytime, which slows
down the release of sleep-promoting hormones.39 If you use a digital alarm clock,
turn down its brightness or place it where you can't see the light. These small changes help
keep your bedroom dark enough to support healthy sleep patterns each night.
Choose a comfortable mattress()and pillow.
An old or uncomfortable mattress can cause back pain and make you toss and turn all
night. If your mattress is more than 9-10 years old, consider replacing it.40 When
lying on your back, your ears, shoulders, and hips should be in a straight line.If your head tilts
up,your pillow may be too thick;ifit leans down,it may be too flat.
A.Your pillow matters too.
B.Control your bedroom environment.
C.Make some changes to your bedroom.
D.The good news is that there are solutions.
