It has been over 500 years since the first journey around the whole planet in 1522. Long before the invention of trains and planes, many believed such a journey was impossible. It nearly was. The journey was started by Portuguese sailor, Ferdinand Magellan, but he never saw it finished.
Magellan was following in the footsteps of explorers like Christopher Columbus. But his journey was even more adventurous. A journey around the whole world would show completely that the world was not flat, but round.
In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain with the support of its king, Charles V. However, many Spanish sailors in the fleet didn’t like being led by a Portuguese man.
After fighting storms, losing ships and many of his men turning against him and returning home, Magellan was killed in the Philippines by local people.
After Magellan’s death, his group continued in the only ship that was left. Along the way, they traveled across a new ocean and opened up new routes for European trade. For better or worse, they had made the way for modern world trade. Sixty thousand miles later, and after the death of 80 percent of those who took part, the journey had shown that the world could be circled around.
The passage Magellan’s team went through, between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, was named after him: the Strait of Magellan. It is 570 kilometers long. His influence on the world did not end there. In 1989, NASA named a spacecraft after the explorer and sent it to Venus(金星).
9. When did Magellan start the “impossible” journey?
A. In 1519. B. In 1522. C. In 1525. D. In 1989.
10. What did Magellan’s group do during the journey?
A. They crossed a new ocean. B. They turned against their king.
C. They gave up the only ship. D. They managed to kill Magellan.
11. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The Strait of Magellan. B. Magellan’s big influence.
C A spacecraft from NASA. D. The exploration of Venus.
12. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The unusual life of Magellan B. The result of a great voyage
C. The first journey around Earth D. The 500-year-old adventure
D
Miss Martha owned a small bakery (面包店). She was forty, a kind woman with a big imagination. She often wondered about the customers in her shop.
One customer made her very curious. He was a middle-aged man with glasses, who always wore old clothes, but clean. He came twice a week, and each time, he only bought two loaves (条) of hard bread. He never looked at her delicious pies or fresh cakes.
Miss Martha decided he must be a poor, hungry artist. She imagined him living in a very small, cheap room, thinking only about his painting so much that he forgot to eat. The idea touched her kind heart. She began to wish she could help him.
The next time he came to the shop, she acted quickly while his back was turned. She took two hard loaves, made a small hole in each, and put a large piece of fresh butter inside. Then she wrapped them up as usual.
Her heart beat fast as she handed him the bread. She spent the rest of the day dreaming that he would discover her kindness and thank her.
Suddenly, the quiet of the afternoon was broken. The shop door flew open, and the man stormed in. His face was dark with anger. He threw the bread down hard on the table.
“I am an architect (建筑师)!” he shouted. “For the past three months, I have been working on a building plan. I draw in pencil, and I use pieces of hard bread as erasers. It works better than a rubber eraser! But now... look.”
He held up his drawing. A huge, dirty mark from the butter ran across the clean, straight lines.
“You filled my bread with butter!” he shouted. “My work is damaged!”
—Adapted from Witches’ Loaves by O. Henry

There are two kinds of squirrels (松鼠) in the UK: the red squirrel and the grey squirrel. However, the population of red squirrels has become smaller since the last century. This is mainly because grey squirrels are bigger and stronger, so they are better at competing for food and areas to live. ____17____ This virus doesn’t harm grey squirrels, but it can be dangerous for red squirrels.
However, scientists have developed an AI system to help increase red squirrel numbers. The system has been trained to look at photos of squirrels. ____18____ The system gives red squirrels more food, and offers grey squirrels a kind of special food that stops them having babies. Scientists check the AI has recognized grey squirrels properly.
____19____ Scientists think the AI could also be taught to recognize squirrels by their whiskers (胡须). This could help scientists follow squirrels more closely. For example, if a red squirrel gets sick, the AI could let scientists know quickly.
With the help of AI, the number of red squirrels might rise soon. “This isn’t just about squirrels,” Dr. Smith, a wildlife scientist, says. “____20____”
A. What’s the next step?
B Grey squirrels also carry a virus.

In a narrow hutong in Beijing lies a small library. It covers only seven square meters, but thousands of books are kept in it. Unlike traditional libraries, this one doesn’t require its readers to return the books. Instead, it encourages them to pass those books on to someone else when they’ve finished reading.
The owner of this library, Mr. Xu, is a businessman, who started it in 2010. The idea took shape when Xu recommended books online to students, but found it hard for them to get the books from their school libraries. So, Xu bought and gave away nearly 1,000 books in the following year. The students who received the books were very thankful. Their thank-you letters got Xu to turn his book-gifting effort into a physical (实体的) space.
Xu’s library might be the smallest in the world, but in another sense, it’s also the biggest because its books keep moving. Once, a reader took home an English book on Chinese history. A week later, he passed it on to a neighbor. Amazingly, the book traveled all the way abroad and ended up in Germany.
Xu says he will continue this work although the library is now faced with the challenge of e-books. “This is the most meaningful thing I’ve done in my life,” he says. “I hope that the library can stay open forever.”

It allows people to pass the books on to others after reading. This idea lets one book reach many readers./Mr. Xu is a kind and creative person.
