We walked in and all eyes were on me. A few adults quickly quieted their kids’ whispers. A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face?” Shocked, I started to explain my condition, but my six-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation. I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love. But I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside. When I had my first daughter, I was overjoyed, but I began to worry if the world would judge my children. I always worried I might pass my condition onto my children; I didn’t want them to grow up feeling judged. Unfortunately, my facial difference has impacted my children. My daughters get disinvited from birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school. When my kids were young, I explained how my special purple skin was rare and we talked about acceptance and never judging others on how they look. When my girls kiss my purple-skinned cheek, I feel “normal” around them and their unconditional love. With time going by, both my daughters have become my strongest supporters. Thanks to them, I’ve begun to feel more self-confident as I try to be a good role model. Their worldviews are similar to mine. We see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me! 24. What happened when the author went to attend the parent-teacher night? A. Athena was praised by others for her bravery and optimism. B. Athena defended her mother against her classmate’s rudeness. C. Some parents criticized their kids because of their misbehaviour. D. The author felt shocked at her daughter’s response to her classmate. 25. According to paragraph 2, which of the following views might the author agree with? A. Friendship needs to be watered by love. B. We should treat our children as best friends. C. We should accept other people’s differences. D. Our ability to handle difficulties can be developed. 26. How are the daughters influenced by the author’s birthmark? A. They have to drop out of school. B. They have the same physical condition as me. C. They have difficulty maintaining friendships. D. They feel worried because they are often judged. 27. What is the best title for the passage? A. A birthmark to live with. B. My strongest supporters. C. A kind and accepting heart. D. The confidence to be different. B 25. C 26. C 27. 根据第一段中“A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face?” Shocked, I started to explain my condition, but my six-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation.( 一个同学对我女儿喊道:“你妈妈的脸怎么了?”我很震惊,开始向他解释我的情况,但我六岁的女儿看着他说:“这是我妈妈的胎记!别那么粗鲁!”我为她处理这种情况的方式感到非常自豪)”可知,因为作者脸上胎记,被其女儿的同学嘲讽,但是作者的女儿为其辩护,反对她同学的粗鲁。故选B项。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love. But I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside.(在我很小的时候,我就意识到因为脸上的大胎记,我看起来和别人不一样。 根据第二段中“Unfortunately, my facial difference has impacted my children. My daughters get disinvited from birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school.(不幸的是,我的面部差异影响了我的孩子。我的女儿们被取消了参加生日派对或过夜聚会的邀请,或者我知道某些孩子在他们的父母在学校看到我后就不再和我的孩子做朋友了)”可知,作者的女儿受到作者的胎记的影响是:在与其他孩子维持友谊方面遇到了困难。故选C项。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。文章第一段作者提到自己的女儿帮助自己回击那些嘲笑自己脸上胎记的坏声音,且根据最后一段“Their worldviews are similar to mine. We see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me!(他们的世界观和我的相似。 There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humour just to help us go through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart. How would you feel if you could not joke around with wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with. My Grandma always found humour in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is a common manner to speak to others that are around you. I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their faces. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke? Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humour, we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness and a little light in our lives. Therefore, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together. 28. According to the passage, why is humour necessary and essential? A. It can lift people’s spirits. B. It can help people get on well with others. C. It can help get rid of the cruelty in the world. D. It makes people more confident. 29. What does the underlined phrase “busting a gut” in the third paragraph mean? A. Keeping silent. B. Speaking loud. C. Laughing hard. D. Explaining carefully. 30. What is the author’s attitude towards the present world? A. Critical. B. Satisfied. C. Indifferent. D. Not Mentioned. 31. In writing the passage, what does the author mainly intend to do? A. To talk about his own understanding of humour. B. To encourage people to be humorous in daily life. C. To convince people of the power of being optimistic. D. To introduce a practical way to get through daily life. A 29. C 30. A 31. 根据第一段“Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.( 俗话说,当你知道某人感到沮丧时,面带微笑,会让我感觉良好,温暖我的心) ”可知,幽默是必不可少的是因为它能振奋人的精神。故选A。 根据第三段“They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh.(他们听不懂让别人发笑的笑话) ”和本段倒数第二句“while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space(当他们就坐在那里,看着我仿佛我来自外太空) ”可知,此处是指“我”大笑不已,所以busting a gut意为“大笑不已”。 根据第一段“There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us go through difficult times in our lives.(当今世界存在着残酷的战争、战斗和悲伤,所以拥有良好的幽默感不仅是必要的,而且也是必不可少的,它能帮助我们度过生活中的困难时期。) ”和倒数第二段“There is too much sadness and a little light in our lives. (我们的生活中有太多的悲伤和一点点的光明。)”可知,作者对当今世界的态度是批判的。故选A。 根据第一段“There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us go through difficult times in our lives. (当今世界存在着残酷的战争、战斗和悲伤,所以拥有良好的幽默感不仅是必要的,而且也是必不可少的,它能帮助我们度过生活中的困难时期。)”和最后一段“Therefore, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.(因此,我相信我们最好的药是聚在一起,讲一些笑话,一起笑得很开心。) ”可知,文章的目的是鼓励人们在日常生活中保持幽默。故选B。 Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition(认知)? What about our body? Is it possible for thought and behaviour to originate from somewhere other than our brain? Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition(EC)ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure. If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have emotions so much as needs – they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats, and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved. Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction. In one experiment, test subjects were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. And it works the other way too. In another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer. For further proof, we can look at the metaphors(比喻)that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages. Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions. 32. According to the author, what is the significance of EC? A. It brings us closer to the truth in human cognition. B. It offers a clearer picture of the shape of human brain. C. It reveals the major role of the mind in human cognition. D. It facilitates our understanding of the origin of psychology. 33. Where does the newborns’ understanding of their surroundings start from? A. Their personal looks. B. Their mental needs. C. Their inner emotions. D. Their physical feelings. 34. What does the author intend to prove by citing the metaphors in Paragraph 4? A. Human speech is alive with metaphors. B. Human senses have effects on thinking. C. Human language is shaped by visual images. D. Human emotions are often compared to natural materials. 35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph? A. To deepen the readers’ understanding of EC. B. To encourage the reader to put EC into practice. C. To guide the reader onto the path to career success. D. To share with the reader ways to release their emotions. A 33. D 34. B 35. 根据文章第一段“The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.(EC理论表明,我们的身体也负责思考或解决问题。更准确地说,思维塑造身体,身体同等程度地塑造思维。) ”可知,EC理论让我们更接近人类认知的真相。故选A。 根据文章第二段“In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved.(在现实世界中,他们冷了就哭,然后被拥抱。这样,他们开始将温暖与被爱联系起来) ”可推知,新生儿对周围环境的理解依靠的是身体感觉。故选D。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“For further proof, we can look at the metaphors (比喻) that we use without even thinking.(为了进一步证明,我们可以看看我们不假思索就使用的比喻)”和倒数第三段“Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction.(更多的研究支持了身心互动) ”可知,两个自然段都是为了证明上文第一段EC的观点“The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure.(EC理论表明,我们的身体也负责思考或解决问题。更准确地说,思维塑造身体,身体同等程度地塑造思维) ”。所以,作者想要印证的是人类的感官对思维有影响。故选B。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? (既然您已经掌握了身心互动的知识,为什么不使用它呢?) ”可知,最后一段作者鼓励读者把EC理论运用于现实生活中。故选B。 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s a common practice to take off your shoes when_you enter your home. Many do this to prevent dirt and bacteria (细菌) from getting inside._____36_____ Technically, yes. As you walk around outside, your shoes pick up bacteria, viruses and dirt. A2017 study showed that more than 26 percent of the soles (底) of shoes worn in homes contained Clostridium difficile, or C. diff, a common healthcare-associated infection that can be deadly. But if that worries you, get this -- the average person has more than 100 trillion bacteria in and on their body. ____37____And if your pets go outside, they’re bringing in dirty stuff on their paws and fur. Thankfully, most of the bacteria on your body and in your home are harmless. Same with the stuff you track in on your shoes. ___38___Take them off if you’ve got little kids crawling around on the floors, who may then put their fingers in their mouths. Disinfect if someone in your home is sensitive to infection. And since pollen (花粉) can be transferred from shoes to floors, and especially carpets, kick off your shoes if someone at home has allergies. If you’re really determined to cut down on dirt, keep your slippers on rather than going barefoot. Each of your feet has about 125,000 sweat glands (汗腺) on the sole, and any sweat on your feet can be transferred to carpets._____39_____ In the end, the choice of whether or not to go shoeless is yours. ____40____But whether your shoes are on or off, you may want to clean your home as soon as possible. A. But is that really an issue? B. Wet carpets, in turn, trap dirt. C. Wet carpets make a home for bacteria. D. Your home is covered in bacteria, too. E. Despite this, other people think this is unnecessary. F. Some people just like the feel of walking around in bare feet. G. Still, there are some cases where it may make sense to remove your shoes. A 37. D 38. G 39. B 40. A“But is that really an issue?(但这真的是个问题吗?)” 故选A。 【37题详解】 根据空前“But if that worries you, get this -- the average person has more than 100 trillion bacteria in and on their body.(但如果这让你担心,看看这个——平均每个人体内和体表都有超过100万亿个细菌。)” D“Your home is covered in bacteria, too.(你的家里也布满了细菌。)” 【38题详解】 根据下文内容“Take them off if you’ve got little kids crawling around on the floors, who may then put their fingers in their mouths. Disinfect if someone in your home is sensitive to infection. And since pollen (花粉) can be transferred from shoes to floors, and especially carpets, kick off your shoes if someone at home has allergies.(如果你有小孩在地板上爬来爬去,那就把它们脱掉,因为他们可能会把手指放进嘴里。如果你家里有人对感染敏感,就要消毒。由于花粉可以从鞋子传播到地板上,尤其是地毯上,如果家里有人对花粉过敏,就把鞋子脱掉。)”可知,下文主要讲述的是脱鞋是有必要的。选项G“Still, there are some cases where it may make sense to remove your shoes.(尽管如此,在某些情况下,脱鞋是有意义的。)” 【39题详解】 根据空前内容“If you’re really determined to cut down on dirt, keep your slippers on rather than going barefoot. Each of your feet has about 125,000 sweat glands (汗腺) on the sole, and any sweat on your feet can be transferred to carpets.(如果你真的下定决心要减少污垢,那就穿上拖鞋,而不是光脚走路。 【40题详解】 根据空前内容“In the end, the choice of whether or not to go shoeless is yours.(最后,是否穿鞋是你自己的选择。)” F“Some people just like the feel of walking around in bare feet.(有些人就是喜欢光着脚走路的感觉。)” Wang Guilan, a 72-year-old Chinese woman, has been known as “Super Grannie” for her ____41____ of running. Though she was small and thin, she loved helping with housework, especially feeding the horses in their big barn (畜棚). One side of the barn housed the horse stalls (马厩), while the other side was piled with hay bales (干草) for feeding. One afternoon. Callie went into the barn to feed the horses. As she walked towards the tall stacks of hay. She suddenly stopped. A tiny, weak sound came through the dusty air. Meow... meow... Her heart jumped. A kitten must be trapped in the hay! Breathing hard, she ran back to find Ben and her father. “Dad! Ben! Come quick! A kitten is stuck in the hay!” she called urgently. Ben sighed, putting down his tools. Her father looked doubtful. “Probably just the wind, Callie,” he said gently. But they followed her to the barn. They stood quietly near the hay stacks, listening. The barn was silent. “Hear anything?” Ben asked. Their father shook his head. “Nothing, sweetheart. Maybe it was just a mouse. Don’t worry about it.” Disappointed, Callie watched them leave. After dinner, Callie slipped back to the barn. She stood still, listening attentively. And there it was again! Meow... meow... Weaker now, but clear. She raced back to the house. Her father was watching TV. “Dad, please!” she begged. “I heard it again! It is a kitten! Please, just come and check one more time?” He looked unwilling but saw the real worry in her eyes. “Alright, one last look.” He returned a few minutes later, “Callie, I listened hard. All I heard was an owl outside. No kitten. Try not to worry.” He gave her a tired smile. “Thanks for checking, Dad.” Callie whispered, though she still felt uneasy. That night, Callie woke up suddenly. The weak cries filled her mind. She couldn’t rest. Quietly, she put on her coat, took a flashlight and slipped out. Inside the barn, near the hay stacks, Callie held her breath, listening with full attention. Then, it came: Meow... meow... Her flashlight beam swept across the bales. There! Near the bottom of a tall stack, she spotted a tiny movement between two big bales. She rushed over and pushed the bales again, but they wouldn’t move. “I have no choice but to get help!” Callie thought to herself. 66. Spot return excited urgently disappointed push stop worried help beg feed happiness Callie heard a meow while ________ horses in the barn. Callie went into the barn to feed the horses. As she walked towards the tall stacks of hay. She suddenly stopped. A tiny, weak sound came through the dusty air. Meow... meow... Ben sighed, putting down his tools. Her father looked doubtful. “Probably just the wind, Callie,” he said gently. But they followed her to the barn. 及第四段中“Disappointed, Callie watched them leave. 根据第五段中“‘Dad, please!’ she begged. ‘I heard it again! It is a kitten! Please, just come and check one more time?’ 根据第四段中“Disappointed, Callie watched them leave. 根据第五段中“He returned a few minutes later, ‘Callie, I listened hard. All I heard was an owl outside. No kitten. Try not to worry.’ 根据第五段中“Callie whispered, though she still felt uneasy. 及最后一段中“The weak cries filled her mind. She couldn’t rest. Near the bottom of a tall stack, she spotted a tiny movement between two big bales. 根据最后一段中“She rushed over and pushed the bales again, but they wouldn’t move. 根据最后一段中“‘I have no choice but to get help!’ Callie thought to herself. Near the bottom of a tall stack, she spotted a tiny movement between two big bales. It was trapped between two big hay bales in the barn. 根据最后一段“That night, Callie woke up suddenly. ‘I have no choice but to get help!’ Callie thought to herself. She was determined, persistent, kind, careful, or an animal lover. Callie turned to her family for help again, and with the joint hands, they saved the kitten finally. 你校即将举行一场以“Connect the World with Languages; Influence the World with China’s Stories”为主题的英语演讲比赛。 Bridges of Voice and Vision ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Bridges of Voice and Vision Dear teachers and classmates, The theme “Connect the World with Languages; Influence the World with China’s Stories” highlights that languages are bridges linking diverse cultures, while China’s stories carry our wisdom and values to the world. B I still remember that busy autumn evening as I hurried with my eldest daughter, Athena, to get to her classroom on time for the parent-teacher night. D Our ability to handle difficulties can be developed. 26. How are the daughters influenced by the author’s birthmark? A. They have to drop out of school. B. They have the same physical condition as me. C They have difficulty maintaining friendships. D. They feel worried because they are often judged. 27. What is the best title for the passage? A. A birthmark to live with. B. My strongest supporters. C. A kind and accepting heart. D. The confidence to be different. There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humour just to help us go through difficult times in our lives. Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition(认知)? C Their inner emotions. It’s a common practice to take off your shoes when_you enter your home.
