On my 35th birthday, I gave myself my first skateboard. Most of my friends and family thought I was crazy, but only I knew why. Two years ago, I fell down from a 12-meter waterfall by accident and broke my pelvis (骨盆). To keep healthy, physical activities became even more important in my life. So why not make it enjoyable? I’ve wanted to learn to skateboard since I was a kid, but most of my time and energy went into dancing. In my opinion, skating was actually very similar to dancing.
For a long time, I tried to learn skating on my own. I always felt awkward (尴尬的) when many strangers saw me skating or simply trying to keep my balance.
One day, I met some members of a skateboarding club. They were so friendly that I wanted to be part of it. That club was amazing. Even though everyone there was better than me, they were happy to help and excited to see me overcome challenges. There, I gradually became more confident (自信的).
For me, a big part of skating was o… my fear. The more I skated, the better my body and mind would feel. Although I started skating for my body, I never imagined it would open up a new world of excitement and possibilities for me.

In December 2020, the “quiet carriage” (静音车厢) service was first introduced on some trains. Up to June 2024, this service had been added to the Beijing- Guangzhou, Beijing- Harbin, Shanghai- Kunming and other high- speed railways.
In the “quiet carriages”, silent videos are at a low volume (音量). During the trip, passengers must wear earphones when using electronic devices (设备). They also need to leave their seats to make or answer calls, and their phones should be set to silent or vibrate mode (振动模式). For those travelling with children, they must take care of them and keep them quiet.
Mr. Li, a Chengdu local, said, “I made at least one round trip a week between Chengdu and Chongqing for work. I sometimes need to think over my work or get some rest during the hour-long trip. The ‘quiet carriage’ is a good choice for me.”
Miss Mou said, “When I entered the carriage for the first time, signs reminding passengers to keep quiet were everywhere. And it was really much quieter than the other carriages.”

With their cute “smiles”, quokkas (短尾矮袋鼠) are often called the “world’s happiest animals”. But are they really as happy as they seem?
Quokkas are about the size of a small cat and look like a smaller kangaroo (袋鼠) . They have small faces with large eyes and round ears and they are famous for looking like they’re always smiling.
While the quokkas’ “smile” is just a result of the shape of their mouths, they have a friendly nature. They are not afraid of people, so it is easy for visitors to take pictures with them.
Thousands of photos with these animals have been shared on the Internet. Although these animals are popular online, it’s a different story in the wild. Quokkas are listed as vulnerable (易危的) animals.
Today, there are around 10,000 quokkas living on Rottnest Island, with a few smaller populations living on mainland Western Australia. Reports show that quokka populations have been “decreasing” because the environment is getting worse.
For those visiting Rottnest Island, there are rules to help protect the quokka population. Visitors can’t feed or touch the quokkas, or they may pay fines (罚款) of up to about $7,000.
36. What are quokkas famous for?
A. Their smiles. B. Their shapes. C. Their sounds. D. Their colors.
37. Why is it easy for visitors to take pictures with quokkas?
A. Because they are scary. B. Because they are lovely.
C. Because they get angry easily. D. Because they are not afraid of people.

A. Rising. B. Stopping. C. Hiding. D. Dropping.

C. “World’s Happiest Animals” D. Rules to Protect Animals
第二节 阅读表达(共5题;每题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题
After your graduation from junior high school, you have something important to think about—a plan for your personal growth. Here is some advice for you.
Study yourself. Understand what you like, what you value and what you want to be. In studying yourself, you can check your strong points and weak points. Find out what you need to prepare for your dream job.
Write down your plan. When writing, you can try using mind maps (思维导图). It is a good way to help you to think more clearly. And you may find a proper way to work your plan out.
Go over your plan with your teachers, parents or friends. They may give you some advice. Think carefully about their advice and make some changes to your plan if necessary. And then you can go on with it.
Work hard to achieve your goal. For example, if you want to be an English teacher in the future, you should spend more time reading English books, learning more about English culture and practicing your listening and speaking. You can make your dream come true only through hard work.
You may find it difficult to make the plan now. Don’t worry. All you need is just a rough (粗略的) one. Once you enter the senior high school, you’ll get a chance to make it better with the help of your teachers. And your personal growth plan may change with your age, your interests and the social development. So take your time and I believe you will grow into an excellent young man.
