The second time my sister and I were accused of using fake IDs was at a Taylor Swift concert this year. It was funny because we are thirty-eight years old. Still, I understand why people might think “cheat” instead of “adult twins” when they see two people with the same birthdays, addresses, and smiles. If we really had fake IDs, we surely wouldn’t have chosen to be thirty-eight.
Being an adult twin can sometimes feel like unpaid work. We spend too much time answering strange questions. Doctors mix us up, and once I was even added to her car insurance by mistake. We don’t know if we are identical, but we tell everyone we are — it’s easier than explaining that hairstyles and glasses aren’t genetic traits.
Growing up, our parents never pushed us to compete, so we became best friends early. In high school, we sat side by side, sang in the same choir, and shared the same circle. But as adults, our paths split. After graduate school, she found her dream job, while I changed paths several times and took longer to find success. Sometimes I catch myself wondering why I can’t be more like her, which only makes me feel worse. The truth is, comparison steals joy — especially when it’s with the person you love most.
After college, we decided to live together, and somehow we never stopped. Studies say living with family can improve happiness, and that feels true for us. My sister encourages me endlessly and reminds me that she loves me for who I am, not what I’ve done. Our bond is not just about being twins — it’s about choosing each other, every day. If she weren’t my sister, she would still be my best friend.
4. Why were the sisters accused of using fake IDs?
A. They used old photos on the IDs. B. Their tickets were bought together.
C. They looked much younger than D. They had matching personal details.
5. Why do the twins tell people they are identical?
A. To avoid being mixed up. B. Because their parents insisted.
C. To avoid complex explanations. D. Because they look completely alike.
6. What can be inferred about the author’s career path?
A. It was full of uncertainty. B. It followed her sister’s path.
C. It began with instant success. D. It once caused family tension.
7. What does the last paragraph mainly show about their relationship?
A. They stay together out of habit. B. Their bond grows stronger with time.
C. They wish to live separately someday. D. They depend on each other financially.
C
A small town in Finland has started using the world’s largest “sand battery” to help provide heat. This special way of storing energy allows the town to produce heat when electricity prices are low and save it for later use.
Pornainen, home to about 5,000 people, heats most of its buildings through “district heating.” In such a system, hot water is sent from a central heating plant into homes and offices, so each building doesn’t need its own boiler. The system in Pornainen is run by a company called Loviisan Lampo.
In the past, the town’s heat came from burning oil and wood chips. To reduce pollution, the company decided to try a cleaner method and worked with another Finnish company, Polar Night Energy, to build a sand battery. Polar Night had already tested a smaller version in 2022.
A sand battery works because sand can be heated to very high temperatures and can hold heat for a long time if kept in a well-insulated (绝缘的) container. This helps solve a major problem with renewable energy like wind and solar power: they don’t produce electricity all the time. By storing extra energy, the sand battery makes it possible to use clean power whenever it’s needed.
Pornainen’s new battery took a year to build. It is about 13 meters tall and 15 meters wide, large enough to heat the town for a month in summer or a week in winter. Instead of sand, it uses crushed soapstone — waste from a fireplace company — which can be heated up to 400℃.
When electricity is cheap, the sand is heated. Later, hot air is pushed through it to warm water or buildings. The system now heats homes, a library, and a school. During the coldest months, some wood will still be burned, but 60% less than before. Loviisan Lampo hopes to be climate neutral by 2035, and the sand battery is a big step toward that goal. Polar Night is also exploring ways to turn the stored heat back into electricity in the future.
8. What is the main purpose of the sand battery in Pornainen?
A. To store heat for later use at low cost.
B. To replace all wood-burning systems.
C. To produce electricity from solar power.
D. To reduce water usage in district heating.
9. What did Pornainen use for heating in the past?
A. Wind and solar. B. Oil and wood chips.
C. Soapstone and sand. D. Electricity and heated water.
10. What can we infer about Pornainen’s future energy use?
A. It will become more climate-friendly.
B. It will expand the battery to other countries.
C. It will soon stop using district heating entirely.
D. It will depend more on oil and wood for heating.
11. Which is the best title for the text?
A. How to Build a Sand Castle Battery
B. Finland’s Renewable Energy Success
C. A Finnish Town Uses Heat from Sand
D. Polar Night’s New Solar Power Project
D
Almost every part of our bodies weakens over time, but our knees suffer the most. They are complex joints with many moving parts, which naturally wear down with use. As people age, the muscles that support the knees grow weaker, bone density decreases, and the soft cartilage(软骨) between bones becomes thinner. Ligaments(韧带) also lose their flexibility. As a result, many of us experience stiffness, pain, and less ambulation as we grow older.
Still, like any machine, our knees can stay healthy if we take good care of them. The biggest enemies of strong knees are extra body weight, poor shoes, and repeated movements that strain the joints. For example, a study in France found that long-distance runners got about 1.7 knee or ankle injuries for every 1,000 hours of training. Dancers also often suffer from knee problems such as meniscus tears(半月板撕裂). In fact, any activity that puts impact on the legs or twists the knees can cause injuries. A serious knee injury, such as a torn ACL, can keep athletes out for months, and years later, many develop osteoarthritis(骨关节炎) from the damage.
There has long been debate about whether running is harmful to the knees. Some say running on hard roads is like hitting your feet with a hammer. However, a 2017 study found no clear difference in the risk of knee osteoarthritis between runners and non-runners. In fact, regular exercise can strengthen the joints. A 2023 study showed that people who do strength training are 20% less likely to develop osteoarthritis than those who never do.
Building stronger muscles around the knees helps protect them. Good shoes and proper exercise habits also matter. If you feel even mild pain, don’t ignore it—small problems can grow worse. Using knee supports or swimming may help. Because swimming is not weight-bearing, research shows it can aid recovery from small injuries and lower the risk of long-term knee troubles.
12. What does the underlined word “ambulation” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Moving or walking around.
B Speaking clearly and loudly.
C. Breathing deeply and slowly.
D. Sleeping peacefully at night
13. Why are dancers likely to hurt their knees according to the text?
A. They jump too high
B. They wear tight shoes.
C. They train on hard floors.
D. They twist their knees often.
14. What can we infer from the 2023 study?
A Running harms knee joints.
B. Strength training helps knees.
C. Non-runners get osteoarthritis.
D. Dancers have more knee issues.
15. Why is swimming suggested for people with minor knee problems?
A. It puts less stress on the knee joints.
B. It can help cure serious knee injuries.
C. It builds muscle around the knees fast.
D. It is more effective than strength training.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Modern life is full of pressure. Work deadlines, family duties, and money worries can all cause anxiety. This anxiety often affects the body and may lead to chest pain.____16____The good news is that there are several ways to manage these feelings and regain control.
____17____When anxiety or a panic attack begins, tell yourself that these feelings are a normal reaction to stress. This recognition helps you stay calm and decide what to do next. If you realize you are overwhelmed, step away from the situation to give yourself a short break to recover.
Next, focus on your breathing. Breathing exercises can quickly calm your body and mind. They help slow down your heartbeat and ease shortness of breath.____18____Try simple exercises like the 4-7-8 breath — breathe in for four counts, hold for seven, and breathe out for eight. You can also try belly breathing by placing a hand on your stomach and feeling it rise and fall as you breathe slowly.
Another helpful tool is the 3-3-3 technique. When anxiety starts to build, this grounding technique can help. First, name three things you can see around you. ____19____Finally, move three parts of your body — your fingers, shoulders, or feet. This method directs your attention away from worry and back to the present moment.
While these strategies help in the moment, they don’t solve the root cause of anxiety.____20____Therapists can help identify your triggers and teach effective long-term coping strategies. With the right support, you can feel more confident, calm, and in control of your life.
A. Start by realizing what’s going on.
B. Try not to let anxiety control your life.
C. Then, notice three sounds you can hear.
D Anxiety is our body’s natural response to pain.
E. In fact, many people experience both at the same time.
F. A few minutes of such exercises can make a big difference.
G. If panic attacks or chest pain happen often, seek professional help.

Eighteen-year-old Billy and sixteen-year-old Jamie, a pair of adventurous brothers who loved exploring nature, always stood by each other through every challenge. One bright summer morning, they decided to hike into the Whispering Woods, a forest known for its mysterious trails and breathtaking waterfalls.
The boys packed their backpacks with snacks, water, and a map and set out. “Stick together,” Billy reminded his younger brother as they entered the forest. Birds sang above, and sunlight danced through the trees. They followed a narrow path that led to a sparkling stream. Everything seemed perfect—until they reached a fork in the trail.
“Let’s take the left one! It looks more exciting,” Jamie said eagerly.
Billy hesitated but finally agreed. After an hour of walking, the forest grew thicker, and the path disappeared. The brothers realized they were lost. Trying not to panic, Billy pulled out the map, but it made little sense now. They climbed a rock to get a better view, yet all they could see was endless green. “Don’t worry,” Billy said, forcing a smile. “We’ll figure this out.”
As the sun began to set, the woods turned darker and colder. They made a small fire using dry branches and shared the last of their food. Jamie looked nervous. “Do you think we’ll be okay?” he whispered. “Of course,” Billy replied. “As long as we stick together.”
To keep their spirits up, Billy told stories about explorers who found their way through the wild. Jamie listened, his eyes reflecting the flickering flames. Later, they used their jackets as blankets and huddled close to keep warm. The sounds of owls hooting and leaves rustling filled the night, but the steady warmth of the fire and Billy’s calm voice gave Jamie a sense of safety. Eventually, the brothers drifted into uneasy sleep under a sky with twinkling stars.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

The next morning, the brothers woke up to the sound of birds singing and water flowing nearby.

【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. B

B. Speaking clearly and loudly.
A. Running harms knee joints.

【答案】
The next morning, the brothers woke up to the sound of birds singing and water flowing nearby. Billy opened his eyes and saw Jamie looking at him, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. “We can follow the water,” Billy suggested. “Streams usually lead to people.” They gathered their things and set off. As they walked along the stream, they found signs of human activity — a broken fishing rod and some discarded food wrappers. Encouraged, they quickened their pace. After a while, they spotted a small cabin in the distance. They rushed towards it and found a kind old man who helped them contact their parents.
When they finally returned home, their parents were waiting anxiously at the door. Their mom burst into tears and hugged them tightly. “We were so worried!” she cried. Their dad patted their backs, relief evident on his face. Billy and Jamie shared their adventure, how they got lost, made a fire, and found their way with the help of the stream and the old man. Their parents listened, proud of their sons’ courage and resourcefulness. From that day on, the brothers’ bond grew even stronger, and they carried the memories of this adventure as a symbol of their unbreakable brotherhood.
