Dear Tim,
I’m so glad to receive your email. In reply to your questions, here are my answers.
I enjoy seeing films in my free time. For me, films are like magical doors that can transport me to different lives. What’s more, many characters in films can help light up my path of growth.
As you know, I am not confident in my body shape. So I was moved to tears when I watched the film YOLO the other day. The story of an overweight loser changing to an excellent boxer through boxing training really inspired me. I even started to run for half an hour every day after school! Now I am not only a film lover but also a fan of sport.
I hope what I said will be helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

Theatre is a native (土著的) art form in China and plays an important role in spreading Chinese culture, showing traditional Chinese culture and aesthetics (美学). In recent years, many theatrical productions are trying to win the interest of young people by adding new ideas.

Captain Nemo took me to the dining room. We sat at a table in the middle of the room and ate a delicious lunch. He told me that all the food came from the sea. “I love the sea,” he said. “It gives me everything that I need. Even my clothes come from the sea. It is a place of perfect peace. There are no governments, no taxes, and no wars. Here, I am truly free! I will never return to the land.” He took me to see the library which had thousands of books in many languages. Then he showed me the art gallery. It had many paintings by famous artists. The next room was a museum with all kinds of treasures from the sea. I had never seen such a good museum.
Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and very proud of the Nautilus (鹦鹉螺号). He told me that he had discovered a way to make electricity (电) using salt and mercury (水银). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps filled and emptied (排空) tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise.
After we got to the engine room, Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical (圆柱形的) shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500 tons. “It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed (惊叫). “I love it as if it were my child,” he replied.
“How did you build it in secret?” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops.” “It must have cost a fortune! (大笔的钱)” I exclaimed.
“Millions of dollars,” he replied. “However, I have billions!”

①Art has different kinds of forms. Have you ever seen a painting made of sugar? Sugar painting is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire. The development of the sugar painting art is a long process (过程), and every change in the form of sugar painting reflects the changes in the social life, and it is also a reflection of historical and cultural customs.
②Since the Warring States Period, the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge development in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.

Sugar painters use syrup as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work in a very short time. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
④However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
⑤For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. 七、阅读表达(共 5 小题; 每小题 2分, 满分10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容用英语回答问题,每题答案不超过6个单词。
A designer is a person who has ideas. But that’s not all. A designer plans how to make those ideas happen. A set of steps should be followed.
Step One is defining (界定) a problem or need. A theater puts on a show. Actors wearing costumes act on a lighted stage. Set designers design the stage sets. Lighting designers decide what lights to use. Costume designers choose clothes for the actors to wear. Together they form the design team. They share the same need, which is making the show happen.
Step Two is defining a successful result. The desired result is different for different kinds of designers. A fashion designer designs clothing styles. Because stores need people to keep buying, fashion designers need to design clothes that people will buy. The clothes should be different from older clothes.
Step Three is to describe the situation as it is now. A landscape designer plans outdoor areas. The designer looks carefully at the piece of land. Is it flat or hilly? What kind of soil does it have? What plants grow well in that soil? How do people want to use this land? The designer uses all this information in planning.
Step Four is to understand the user. The designer needs to know who will use the product. Software designers write computer programs. They think about the user sitting in front of the screen.
Step Five is to make a detailed plan. Architects design buildings. They plan the size and shape of each room, and decide what materials to use. All the details are on a drawing called a blueprint. The builders will follow this blueprint. The building will be exactly like the plan.
Last but not least, designers should work with other people to turn the design into the real thing. Fashion designers need people to sew the clothes. Landscape designers need workers to plant the plants.
Designers are artists, scientists, and inventors. They work in the present, but they are planners for the future.
86.How many steps should the designer take to make his/her ideas happen?
87.How does the design team make the show happen on the stage in Paragraph 2?

There are no governments, no taxes, and no wars. Here, I am truly free! I will never return to the land.” He took me to see the library which had thousands of books in many languages.
88.Who should the designers try to understand?
89.What drawing is a new house built based on?

③Sugar painting is different from normal painting. It needs boiling syrup (熬糖浆) and painting. It seems simple, but it is extremely challenging to make.
Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China.
