If you’re a sports fan, you may be familiar with the emotional roller-coaster that comes with sports spectatorship (观看). Whether you’re part of a buzzing crowd in a stadium or watching a game at home on TV, it’s easy to get caught up in the highs and lows as you celebrate your favorite team or athlete. Those feelings are so strong, in fact, that a study from Croatia, published in PubMed, showed that the emotional stress during a football match increased the risk of a cardiovascular (心血管的) incident. But can watching sports also be beneficial for you?
The evidence suggests that people who watch live sporting events experience greater well-being than those who don’t. A study published in Frontiers in Public Health by Anglia Ruskin University in the UK found that sports spectators felt less lonely and had higher scores for life satisfaction. Lead author Helen Keys said in a press release, “Watching live sport of all types provides many opportunities for social interaction, and this contributes to forging group identity and belonging.”
But, if for any reason you aren’t keen on going to live events, don’t worry! Watching sports on TV or on the internet may also have positive effects, according to a study by Tsuji and colleagues. They found that older adults who watched sports were less likely to have depressive symptoms than those who didn’t. On top of that, sports spectators tended to have richer social networks than non-spectators. The authors suggest that the social networks gained through watching sports may lower the risk of depressive symptoms.
Cheering at sports events and discussing teams with friends promotes unity, reducing loneliness and depression, showing that sports’ health benefits extend beyond physical activity to include social bonding and overall well-being.
24. Why does the author mention Croatia’s study?
A. To offer an evidence. B. To present an example.
C. To describe a finding. D. To lead into a topic.
25. What does the underlined word “forging” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Shaping. B. Mending. C. Breaking. D. Predicting.
26. What do Tsuji and colleagues advise people to do?
A. Stream sports matches. B. Play sports in person.
C. Expand social networks. D. Promote sports awareness.
27. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. How Risky Is Watching Live Sports?
B. What Is the Secret to Sports Spectatorship?
C. Is Watching Sports Good for Your Well-being?
D. Does Watching Sports Increase Depressive Symptoms?

Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. A study conducted by the US think tank (智囊团) Pew Research Center showed that 92 percent of teenagers go online daily. The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers’ lives.
Changing relationships
High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication. “It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends,” Cooper said. There’s also a greater possibility of things getting lost in translation over social media. “If half of your relationship is over social media, you don’t really know how the other person is reacting,” Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said. Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friend through social media. He currently lives in Scotland, but they’re still able to frequently communicate with one another. “I can feel close to someone that I’m talking to via FaceTime,” Kaplan said.
Wanting to be “liked”
The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves. The 19-year-old Essena O’Neill announced on the social networking service Instagram that she was quitting social media because it made her obsessed (痴迷) with appearing perfect online. Negative comments also can do great damage to a teenager’s self-esteem (自尊). In particular, anonymous (匿名的) social media apps such as Yik Yak may provide opportunities for cyberbullying. The app allows users within 5 miles (8km) to create and add comments to everything. Teenagers who get negative comments on these sites can’t help but feel hurt.
Opening new doors
However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site YouTube. “Social media can help people show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that was never possible before,” Korsos said. But Korsos recognizes that social media has become a distraction. “Social media, though it helps people connect with their friends and stay updated, is not all necessary.”
28. How does social media change relationships, according to the article?
A. It pushes people to meet their friends more often offline.
B. It encourages people to pay more attention to those around them.
C. It enables users to understand accurately what others are talking about online.
D. It allows people to keep in touch with their friends who live far away more easily.
29. Essena O’Neill decided to disconnect herself from social media because ______.
A. she couldn’t tolerate cyber bullying on social media
B. she wanted to spend more time with her friends in reality
C. she was troubled by her desire to look perfect on social media
D. she always felt hurt by the negative information online
30. Which statement about the use of social media would Armin Korsos probably agree with?
A. The use of social media taught him to turn negative comments into motivations.
B. Social media can easily become an addiction, despite its benefits.
C. Social media is mostly a distraction to teenagers, so it is unnecessary for it to exist.
D. If used well social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves.
31. What is the article mainly about?
A. The major problems with social media.
B. The effect of social media on teenagers.
C. How teenagers benefit from social media.
D. Why social media appeals so much to teenagers.
D
The Amazon rainforest spreads across nine South American countries but most of it (60%) is in Brazil. Brazilian scientists think they might have found a way to reverse the damage caused by deforestation and turn farmland back into forest. The secret lies in ancient local knowledge of soil.
Amazonian dark earth (ADE) is a thick, black soil found deep in the Amazon rainforest, and it could help restore forests around the world. ADE is a kind of compost — a soil made from dead plants and animals. Various kinds of compost are sold in gardening centers around the world, but ADE is unique. It was created by indigenous people (the descendants of people who lived somewhere before another culture arrived and took over) from the Amazon between 2,000 and 2,500 years ago. The Amazonian people, today known as Amerindians, created ADE using charcoal from fires, animal bones, food waste and poo. It contains microbes, including bacteria that help to turn chemicals in the soil into useful nutrients that feed plants and trees.
Vast areas of the Amazon have been cut down, mostly to make way for grassland for raising cattle. Scientists are looking for a way to turn grassland back into rainforest and revive forest ecosystems. These support thousands of animal and plant species, many of them unique to the area. Forests also absorb lots of carbon dioxide, a gas that cause climate change.
To see if the Amazon’s special soil could help, the scientists grew grasses and trees in ADE, regular earth and a mixture of both. Trees grown in ADE were up to six times taller than those in regular soil. ADE takes hundreds of years to create, so the scientists can’t simply make more. Team member, Dr. Siu Mui Tsai, said that instead they want to try and “copy its characteristics”, especially its helpful microbes, and see if it could help to restore natural habitats.
32. What are Brazilian scientists trying to do?
A. To bring forests back. B. To measure damage.
C. To reduce farmland. D. To dig out ancient soil.
33. What made the Amazonian dark earth special?
A. Dead plants. B. Animal bones. C. Food waste. D. Bacteria inside.
34. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The reasons for cutting down forests. B. The benefits of raising cattle.
C. The significance of forest ecosystems. D. The influence of climate change.
35. Which of the following might Dr. Siu agree with?
A. Amazonian dark earth is helpful to microbes.
B. Amazonian dark earth is produced in large quantities.
C. Microbes are beneficial to the revival of forests.
D. Microbes are the characteristics of the natural habitats.

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When my boys were younger, going out with them was difficult. My heart sank during the holiday season every time I looked at the long line of kids waiting to meet Santa. This was not an activity our family could enjoy. The noise and crowds caused sensory (感官的) overload for my five-year-old son Noah, an autistic (患自闭症的) child. I also had a younger son, Henry, who needed an extra hand. Waiting in line was hardly possible.
I always hoped for the best but planned for the worst when I took the boys out of the house, but I knew that attempting to get a picture with Santa wasn’t worth the risk. If we had attempted to stand in line for even a few minutes, I would have been chasing Noah, and Henry would have experienced an emotional breakdown. It was easier to stay at home.
On the afternoon of Christmas Eve a year ago, the phone rang. The voice on the other end of the line said, “If you’re at home this evening, I’d like to arrange for Santa to stop by.” It was Denny, the friendly owner of a company, who had helped us with our do-it-yourself project. In a short time he was at our home, Denny’s kindness and ability to relate to our kids were evident.
I felt nervous and excited about having Santa come to our home. Denny told me it would be well arranged. Would our kids even notice? Would they be frightened by a stranger in a red suit? Would they cry?
A few minutes before I was planning to cook dinner on Christmas Eve, Santa tapped gently on the living-room window. Noah was speechless, and his jaw dropped. Henry, two years old, waved and said, “Hi, Santa!
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Excited and nervous, I opened the door and Santa stepped inside.

【原文】 Every summer, my city, Perth, holds a wonderful Fireworks Festival that draws people from all over the area. It usually takes place on a weekend evening at the riverside park. As the sun sets around 6, the park fills with excitement. Families spread out blankets, kids laugh while holding glow sticks, and food stalls sell tasty snacks like popcorn and ice cream. Around 8 p.m., the first firework shoots up into the sky. The firework will end in 10 pm. Actually, what I love most is the joy on everyone’s faces. Friends cheer, parents take photos, and even strangers share smiles. The festival isn’t just about fireworks; it’s a time for the community to come together. It reminds us of the beauty of our city and the happiness of sharing good moments with others.

D. If used well, social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves.
31. What is the article mainly about?
A. The major problems with social media.
B. The effect of social media on teenagers.
C. How teenagers benefit from social media.
D. Why social media appeals so much to teenagers.
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. D 31. B

【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. C

第二节 (满分25分)
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Excited and nervous, I opened the door and Santa stepped inside.

Santa left after staying for only a few minutes, and I shed tears.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Excited and nervous, I opened the door and Santa stepped inside. His bright red suit radiated warmth against the winter gloom, yet I held my breath, while beckoning my sons closer. Shielded subtly behind me, Noah peeked out, fingers clutching my sleeve. Santa, sensing my concerns, knelt slowly, offered a handshake, and asked gently, “would you like to tell me your Christmas wish?” Noah, usually overwhelmed by strangers, hesitated but then murmured something, his eyes wide with curiosity. Meanwhile, Henry giggled as Santa produced velvet-wrapped gifts from his sack. Santa lifted both boys, their laughter ringing with jingling bells. I hastened to capture the precious moment.
Santa left after staying for a while, and tears streamed down my face. A mix of thrill and gratitude took hold of me. Without Denny’s Santa, my boys would have stayed at home alone, not to mention having their picture taken with Santa. A surge of warmth welled up inwardly as I saw Noah and Henry playing happily with their gifts, tears blurring my vision. That night, as I tucked the boys into bed, Noah suddenly hugged me and murmured, “Santa came... just for us.” His words, simple but profound, echoed the unspoken joy in my heart. For the first time, the holiday felt not like a battle, but a blessing, one wrapped in compassion and delivered by a stranger in red.
