My plan to learn to play, the cello()was a healthy choice. So I took the next innocent step
of going to a shop that sells and rents string instruments,especially-violins,violas,and cellos. The
place was a hole-in-the-wall,up a steep flight of stairs.Instruments left a narrow path to the counter
where a woman with grey hair and warm eyes greeted me.Since I couldn't form a question about what
I wanted,I just stood there exploring the scene, which felt very pleasurable.
I rented a cello,a bow,and a case to hold them. What attracted me to the cello was its enormous
size and its soft, smooth, and memorable sounds. It's an instrument made of beautifully polished wood
that I could wrap my arms around and feel its powerful vibrations when the strings were played. That
was a good starting point for me.The only problem was that I didn't know how to play it.
There's a popular belief that the cello is a particularly difficult instrument to learn.Another-issthe
admonition,"Don't bother if you are a beginner over age 10!"Well,I was 70,and what others thought
no longer influenced me.And besides,I thought of the words of Dr.Cohen, who suggested that
learning causes physical changes in the brain.
So I found a teacher who had respect for older adult beginners and I practiced diligently, daily for
years, and sometimes disheartened, but I kept up.I'm happy to report that now, more than a decade later,
I can hold my own in a string trio and two quartets(two violins,a viola,and me,the.female cello)and
even'a senior community band.Of course,I'll never sound like Yo-Yo Ma but you could recognize a
Mozart piece if you heard me play it.And,more importantly,I don't need to please anyone but myself.
Whether it's-a pleasurable.pastime or a new career,the starting point is the same:wonder,curiosity,
determination, and the desire to keep your brain sharp.
24.How did the writer feel in the shop?
A.Amused by the shop assistant.
B.Anxious for a live performance.
C.Pleased at the nice musio atmosphere.
D.Curious about where to find a teacher.
35.What does the underlined word "admonition"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Approval.B.Criticism.
C.Puzzlement.

26.Why does the writer mention Dr.Cohen in Paragraph 3?

B.To provide proof for common belief.

A few days ago,'I watched a video of myself talking in perfect Chinese.I've been studying the
language on and off for only a few years, and I'm far from fluent. But there I was, pronouncing each
character just as a native speaker would."My-favorite food is sushi,"I said-wo zui xihuan de shiwu
shi shousi.
I'd created the video.using softwadle from a Los Angeles-based artifioial-intelligence start-up
called HeyGen.The technology, which only needs a single selfie and a script to-create deepfake videos
of real people"saying"almost anything,is a testament()to the advancements in AI language fools.
This got me thinking about the decreasing interest in language learning with fewer students majoring in
foreign language courses and the devrease of English proficiency(熟练,精通)among young people in
some places.
AI franslation, combined with social media and messaging platforms, seems to be everywhere.
Even language-learning apps are using AI-generated content in their marketing.Howeyer, language
translation is an art rather than a science.Something bigger will be lost in exchange for that
convenience. As Anne,a Chinese translator said,"Building a ladder between widely different languages,
such as Chinese and English,is sometimes as-difficult-as a doctor building a brdge in a patient's
heart,”
Language learning develops cultural competesya skill that AI cannot simply copy.Learning a
different way to speak, read, and write helps people discover new ways to see the world. No machine
can replace such a profoundly human experience.Deborah Cohn,a language professor, emphasizes that
language learning is actually about understanding and connecting with different cultures;Instead of
abandoning language courses in favor of Al,some educators insist on emphasizing the intercultural(
aspects of language learning.Paula Krebs of the MLA points out that even with a "universal
translator?,sometimes the greater meaning of people's utterance (remains a mystery.
In essence, while AI lauguage tools offer convenience, they lack the depth and cultural insight that
comes from human language learning. The challenge and beauty of earning a language are in
understanding the cultural tapestry (that weaves through words, something AI has yet to achieve.
28.Why does the author give the example in paragraph 1?
A.To promote the language software
B.To show off his Chinese language skills.
C.To prove learning a language is a wasted effort.
D.To encourage critical thinking about Ar language tools.
29.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.AI translation deserves more attention.
B.Language-apps play a key fole in marketing.
C.Language translation is far bevond technology.
D.Learning a different language is a chanllenging battle.
30.What is the key benefit of learning a language according to the passage?
A.Better digital abilities.
B.Improved translation skills
C.Deeper cultural confidence.
D.Effective intercultural interaction.
31.What dues the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.AI language tools offer convenience.
B.AI promotes language learning in terms of culture.
4
C.Al is far from perfect in helping language understanding.
D.AI has achieved success in the development of language learning tools.

'A new study has found that a prehistoric sea cow was the target of two different predators(
)-an ancient crocodile and a tiger shark, providing rare insights into the-complex food chains
from millions of years ago.The research, conducted by an international team.of scientists and
published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleentology, uacovers one-of the few known-instances where a
single-prey ()-was-attacked by many predators.
The sea cow, belonging to the extinct group Culebratherium, was first attacked by a crocodile.
Evidence then shows that after the initial attack, the sea cow'stremulnis-were searched by a tiger shark,a
tooth of which was found near the unlucky animal's neck.
"Have you seen the Batman movie? There is a scene where he and Alfred are shooting bullets to
try and figure out which specific type of bullet they are trying to find,"said Benites-Palomino,lead
author of the research."Our research was'conducted in exactly the same way.We have these
experiments in the wild where predators are attacking their prey, and then afterwards we try to compare
which is the best scene for what we're finding there."
The finding is particularly significant as it adds to the limited fossil record of mulfiple predators
interacting with a single prey.Such"interactions are common in today's ecosysteias,-but are rarely
documented in the fossil reeord, making this discovery an important piece of the puzzle in
understanding ancient food webs.
"We have been unsure as to which animals would have served this purpose as a food source for
multiple predators. Our previous research has identified sperm whales searched by several shark
species, and this new research highlights the importance of sea cows within the food chain,"Benites-
Palomino said in a statement.
The digging, directed by Marcelo Sanchez-Villagra,head of the Palaeontological Institute and
Museum in Zurich,Switzerland, was both challenging and rewarding-The site was-initially discovered
by a local farmer who spotted unusual rocks,Inspiring the team to investigate further and eventually
unearth the sea cow fossils.
32.What do we know aboat the prehistoric sea cow?
A.It reached the top of food chains.
B.It is thought to have complex teeth.
C.It belongs to an endangered species.
D.It was attacked by two different animals.
33.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The scene of animal fights.
B.The method of the research.
C.The introduction of a movie.
D.The danger of the experiments
34.What does the importance of the study lie in?
A.Challenging the present ecosystems.

When I was in middle school,my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new
business-a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature,I had to take
a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day,my school announced an exciting event,a talent show for the local food bank.
Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on
National Day.A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day.Deep
down,I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However,my self-doubt held me back,"I
don't have any special skills to share."
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer.I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling
until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the
grocery store after class."How about singing together in the talent show?"She grinned,"I heard you
singing a tune, along the way back home.I can't help following you here."Gosh,I couldn't believe my
ears.Emma,-with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent.Since Emma had the
world's prettiest voice,I felt like being favoured by fortune.
"You two?The talent show for the food bank?"My mum bent towards us and her face lit up."A
big occasion."Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head."Why not practise right now upstairs?I bet
you'll be a perfect matchWinking at us,she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and <started rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged
ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days passed by,I was feeling pretty good about our act.But the
day before the performance,Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape
to perform.
