“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Friends are important to us. Friends help us get through hard times. Friends also influence us a lot. Let’s enjoy two poems about friends.
To Wang Lun (By Li Bai)
Li Bai, sit aboard a ship about to go,
When suddenly onshore your farewell songs overflow.
However deep the Lake of Peach Blossoms (桃花) may be,
It is not so deep, O Wang Lun, as your love for me.
A Time to Talk (By Robert Frost)
When a friend calls to me from the road.
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around.
On all the hills I haven’t hoed (锄地),
And shout from where I am, “What is it?”
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I push my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade (锄头)-end up and five feet tall.
And plod: I go up to the stone wall,
For a friendly visit.
Both poems are famous in their cultures, but they tell different stories. Li Bai described the scene (场景) of his friend seeing him off. US poet Robert Frost wrote about a friend’s visit when he was working. Li made a comparison (比较). His poem shows the friendship between him and his friend is deeper than the deep water. Frost’s poem, on the other hand, tells the readers that we should stop what we are doing to talk with our friends. It tells us that nothing should get in the way of spending time with friends. The language is simple but sincere (真挚的).

How can you combine (结合) games with English learning? The answer is Wordle! Wordle players must correctly guess a five-letter word with just six tries. You either win by guessing it or lose because you run out of tries.
Invented by software engineer Josh Wardle, the game has been popular with millions of players across the world. Every midnight, Wordle refreshes (更新) its word of the day. For example, the answer for November 3 is ALOUD.
As you guess, the game gives you hints. For example, if a letter is correct and in the right place, it turns green. If the letter is not in the word, it turns gray, if the letter is part of the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. These hints make the game into a puzzle (谜题).
You need knowledge to win this game, not just luck. Every syllable (音节) in an English word includes at least one vowel (元音), so finding vowels is a useful method. For example, in the word “think”, there is only one syllable and there is one vowel “i”.
Several days ago, I played this game and found it very interesting. First, I guessed the word “table”. Only “a” was green. Then, I guessed “maker” and the “r” turned yellow. In the end, I guessed “carry” and I was correct!
Wordle is not only a perfect game to have fun, but also an excellent tool to increase your English vocabulary. Why not have a try in your spare time?

C. ①-c;②-a;③-b D. ①b;②-a;③-c

“So, you were ill last night, Colin,” the doctor said.
“I’m better now,” Colin answered. “I’m going out in my wheelchair (轮椅) if it is fine.”

Just then Martha opened the door. “Dickon and his animals are here, sir,” she said, Colin looked very excited.
Dickon came in. The new-born lamb (羔羊) was in his arms and the little red fox walked next to him. A bird sat on his left shoulder and a squirrel sat on the other. Another squirrel was looking out of his coat pocket. Colin stared as Dickon gave him the new-born lamb.
“What does it want?” cried Colin.
“It wants its mother,” said Dickon, smiling.

Have you seen wind lift a kite into the sky? It is a common example of how humans use nature’s energy. Actually, humans can always think of ways to use energy in nature, such as the use of wind energy. And humans have been using this power for thousands of years. There are many facts about using wind.
②Boats were one of the most important forms of transportation (交通) for ancient people. Wind blows against the boats’ sails, and then pushes them forward. Modern technology can make wind power even more helpful by using it to produce electricity (电力) . Wind makes windmills turn faster, which helps change the power of the wind into electricity. Then the electricity travels through power lines and is sent out to homes and more. More importantly, wind energy is a clean and renewable source.
③Besides humans, plants also take advantage of wind power. Seeds (种子) are carried by wind to new places, allowing plants to spread and grow. A light wind can send hundreds of dandelion (蒲公英) seeds flying everywhere. When the seeds land, they can grow into new plants.
④And animals also make use of wind power. For example, birds use their wings to fly, but that takes a lot of energy. With the help of wind, they can fly much more easily. Spiders make strong silk in their bodies. Many baby spiders travel far by throwing a thread into the air and letting wind carry them away.
⑤Using wind energy is a step towards a greener and pollution-free environment. Next time you see a sailboat moving in the water or a bird flying in the sky, remember the power of wind. It’s a force of nature. And it is also a symbol of friendship between humans and nature.
1. Why does the writer give an example of using wind energy in Paragraph 1?
A. To share an idea. B. To discuss a problem.
C. To lead into the topic (话题). D. To compare the facts.
2. What does the underlined word “them” refer to?
A. The boats. B. The boatmen. C. The windmills. D. The power lines.
3. What can we know about the wind energy according to the text?
A. It helps birds build their homes. B. It is friendly to the environment.
C. It makes seeds grow in safe places. D. It protects animals from their enemies.
4. What is the structure of the text? (①= Paragraph 1…)
A. B.

1. When did Li Bai describe the scene of the poem?
A. Wang Lun was taking a ship. B. He was enjoying the Peach Blossoms.
C. Wang Lun was seeing him off. D. He was singing a song.
2. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The end of the friendship. B. The writers of the poems.
C. The popularity of the poems. D. The analysis (分析) of the poems.
3. What is the feature of the language in Frost’s poem?
A. Simple but sad. B. Happy and rich. C. Simple and happy. D. Simple but sincere.
4. Which proverb has the same meaning as these two poems?
A. Home is where the heart is.
B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. Friendship is like wine; it gets better as it grows older.
D. The influence of a good teacher can last a lifetime.
5. Li Bai’s poem uses the rhetorical devices (修辞手法) of ____ .
A. simile (明喻) B. hyperbole (夸张)
C. personification (拟人) D. parallelism (排比)

1. Match the colour hints with the situations and choose the RIGHT answer.
①The letter is not in the word.
②The letter is correct and in the right place.
③The letter is part of the word but in the wrong place.
a. Green. b. Grey. c. Yellow.
A. ①-a;②-b;③-c B. ①-c;②-b;③-a
C. ①-c;②-a;③-b D. ①b;②-a;③-c
2. Which of the following words CAN’T describe the Wordle?
A. Easy. B. Popular. C. Interesting. D. Useful.
3. What does the underlined word “hint” mean in Chinese in Paragraph 3?
A. 答案 B. 提示 C. 方法 D. 干扰
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Users can never win Wordle if they know little English.
B. Every syllable in an English word includes only one vowel.
C. There is only one correct word in Wordle every day.
D. Wordle players can guess a six-letter word with five tries.
5. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? (P1=Paragraph 1…)
A. B.
C. D.

A. B.
C. D.
5. What is the text mainly about?
A. How wind helps. B. Why humans use wind.
C. Where wind comes from. D. What animals do with wind.
