Arizona and Summer never got along. Their disagreements started in kindergarten over a small toy. “This is my toy,” shouted six-year-old Summer. “No, it’s not.” Arizona shouted back. That was only the beginning.
In Grade One, they argued during a sports game. In Grade Three, their chess club meetings often ended with “You can’t move there,” and “Why are you so slow?”
Everything changed in Grade Five when both girls were chosen to play bunny rabbits in the school play. During rehearsals (彩排), Arizona and Summer did their best to stand far from each other. But their director, Mr. Jackson, asked them to cooperate and sing the “Funny Bunny” song as a team.
They agreed and had to communicate during the practice. During the break, they started talking about their old arguments. They imitated (模仿) their childhood arguments in a little kid voice again: “This is my toy.” “No, this is MY toy.” Soon they laughed loudly because the voice sounded so funny. “What if we use this voice in our song?” Summer suggested. “Excellent! Everyone will be surprised.” Arizona agreed.
They practiced hard every day. Summer noticed that Arizona was quite good at singing, and Arizona discovered that Summer was always able to find a way out of difficult situations. Slowly, they started to understand each other instead of arguing. In the school play, their song was a big success. People cheered for them and laughed happily.
When the performance ended, Arizona looked up and met Summer’s smiling eyes. For the first time in years, there was no anger or competition in their eyes—only understanding and joy.

Free time is a good chance for teenagers to have fun. What about free time with parents around? Some teenagers want free playtime without their parents’ supervision (监管) while parents and experts may think differently.
Lin Tao, a middle school student, thinks teenagers should be free to play. “Last time I played with my parents around, I was nervous and just couldn’t enjoy myself to the fullest,” Lin says. “And my friend Chen Xiaoxin has similar experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates. Everyone felt uncomfortable under his mother’s supervision.”
Wang Min, a mother of a 14-year-old boy, thinks playtime needs supervision. She explains, “People usually say I like to control my kid, but that’s not true. I am just worried that he will get into trouble. Some guys may have a bad influence on him and some games may mislead (误导) him. He might even get indulged in the games and can’t get back to real life.”
Mr. Ma, a doctor of social studies, says it’s understandable for teenagers to wish for freedom. Free play helps them to be independent. Parents can give them more space. They don’t have to supervise them all the time. However, teenagers should find out the exact details (细节) about the activities before playtime. Then they can communicate with their parents and decide together whether they can go out to play alone.
1.According to the text, free time is a good chance for teenagers to ________.
A.study hard B.have fun C.get into trouble D.mislead parents

C.By comparing facts. D.By giving examples.
3.What do the underlined words “get indulged in” in Paragraph 3 mean?

4.Which of the following ideas may Mr. Ma support?
A.A boy’s parents should never ask him about whom he plays with.
B.A boy can go out without knowing anything about the activities.
C.A boy’s parents should be around every time he plays with his friends.
D.A boy should talk to his parents about the exact details before playtime.
5.Which is the right structure of the passage? (①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2, …)
A. B. C. D.
1.B 2.D 3.A 4.D 5.A
根据文章第一段“Free time is a good chance for teenagers to have fun.”
根据文章第二段“Last time I played with my parents around, I was nervous and just couldn’t enjoy myself to the fullest,” Lin says. “And my friend Chen Xiaoxin has similar experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates. Everyone felt uncomfortable under his mother’s supervision.”
根据文章第三段“Some guys may have a bad influence on him and some games may mislead (误导) him. He might even get indulged in the games and can’t get back to real life.” 结合语境,“get indulged in”意思与“沉迷于”相近,“Get lost in.” 故选A。

Then they can communicate with their parents and decide together whether they can go out to play alone.”
故选A。
(C)
As we walk the “path of life”, we may sometimes wish to be alone with our own thoughts, for quiet moments of reflection (反省) can lead to personal improvement. However, when we want to be alone, we must be careful that we do not always jump into our own world. Social life is also important to all of us.
As we live in social groups, there are many benefits of friendship that we can enjoy. Generally speaking, close friendships have three “fruits”: they may comfort the heart, advise the head and help us achieve the goals we set for ourselves. Through friendship, we can become happier, wiser and more satisfied humans.
The first fruit of friendship is the peace that comes from sharing with friends our joy, sadness, success and failure. Here, friendship has a double advantage—happiness takes on a greater meaning and a trouble shared becomes a trouble halved! Naturally, this kind of openness results from a close friendship. We know that our friends will both respect our feelings and treasure these moments of closeness.
The second fruit of friendship is the better understanding and judgement (评判) that may be achieved through conversations with well-meaning and wise friends. We often find it easier to recognize other people’s weaknesses than our own. As a result, if we are guided only by our own feelings, our judgement might be one-sided. On the other hand, our friends are better able to offer advice on important decisions that we all have to make. This helps make our thoughts clearer and brings us a more thorough (彻底的) understanding of our problems.
The third fruit of friendship is the help that a friend may offer in many different ways. Sometimes a friend is even known as our “second self”. There are so many things in life that can only be achieved with the help of friends. Friends may have many different ideas and skills.
Finally, it should be pointed out that enjoying the company of a crowd is not the same as being with friends. Friends should be carefully chosen and relationships carefully developed. In this way, we can better walk the “path of life” with the comfort, advice and help from our trusted friends.
1.According to the passage, close friendships have a lot of “fruits” EXCEPT ________.
A.making our hearts peaceful B.achieving our goals with friends’ help
C.guiding our own feelings easily D.understanding our problems better
2.We can achieve better understanding by talking with wise friends because ________.
A.it is more difficult to realize other people’s weaknesses than our own
B.our judgement won’t be one-sided if we are guided only by our feelings
C.our friends are able to offer better advice on our important decisions
D.it gives us a chance to completely understand our friends’ problems
3.Which shows the best structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Ways of Judging Friends B.Understanding of Friendship
C.Advice on Making Friends D.Improvements of Social Life
根据第二段中“Generally speaking, close friendships have three ‘fruits’: they may comfort the heart, advise the head and help us achieve the goals we set for ourselves.”
根据第四段中的“On the other hand, our friends are better able to offer advice on important decisions that we all have to make.”
(D)
We all love our parents and they love us too. However, misunderstandings can still happen if we don’t understand each other’s ways of expressing love—a challenge especially common in parent-child relationships. So, it is important to express our love in the right way.
The way someone expresses love is called their “love language”. In the book The 5 Love Languages, Gary Chapman introduces five key love languages that people use to express and experience love: words of affirmation (肯定), quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. It helps us understand how different people show and receive love.
Because of generational differences (代际差异), our love languages are usually different from our parents’. For example, my parents show love through acts of service, like cooking for me. I, however, prefer to express love through words of affirmation. This difference created a big disagreement between us at the beginning. I would try to talk to them, but they wouldn’t answer. They would try to help me by cooking, but I would get impatient. Things changed when I began to recognize their purposes.
To connect with your parents, speak their love language. If they value quality time, spend more time with them. If they like receiving gifts, give them something meaningful. If they love words of affirmation, praise them. This way, they can recognize and accept your love more easily.
Avoid forcing them to accept a love language they don’t understand, like always asking for hugs if they’re uncomfortable with it. Instead, learn to speak their language. This will lead to better and faster results in your relationship.
Understanding and accepting your parents’ love language can help bridge the gap between generations. It’s not just about expressing love in your own way; it’s about recognizing and respecting how your parents express their love. By doing so, you can keep a deeper and more meaningful connection with your parents. Remember, love is best expressed when it is understood.
1.According to the first paragraph parent-child relationships may be better if ________.

D.parents and children use the right way of expressing love

A.The writer and his parents like the same kind of food.
B.The writer expressed love in speech more than in action.
C.Parents can easily accept the way their children show love.

3.What does the underlined phrase “bridge the gap” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Build a real bridge between two places.
B.Remember happy moments with parents.
C.Give expensive gifts to family members.
D.Reduce differences and improve connections.
4.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce a book about family love.

Fiona was a very popular girl at school. From an early age, she made an effort to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party and occasionally (偶尔) gave presents to everybody.
However, everything changed on International Day of Friendship. In class that day, everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from among all her classmates. But when all the presents had been made and shared out, she was the only one that didn’t receive a present! Fiona hadn’t expected this and felt terrible, crying for hours. Everyone came to comfort her, but each stayed only a short time before leaving—just as she had done to others so many times.
She realized she was a good companion (伙伴), but she hadn’t been a true friend to anyone. Although she had tried to be close to everyone, she found that wasn’t enough to create true friendship.
That night, Fiona told her mother about everything. Her mother said, “My dear, you cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you want true friends, you must give them time and real care. For a true friend, you must always be available in good times and bad.”
Hearing this, Fiona decided to change her ways to finally have some true friends. As she lay in bed that night, she thought about how to achieve this. She thought about her mother, who was always ready to help her, put up with her bad behaviour, encouraged her and loved her dearly. That was what made a true friend!
Fiona smiled happily, realizing she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.
1.Which shows the right changes of Fiona’s feelings during the gift exchange?
A.Happy→sad→doubtful. B.Excited→shocked→sad.

A.They called her mother. B.They gave her their presents.

A.She didn’t do well in school. B.She wasn’t popular at school at all.
C.She wasn’t making friends calmly. D.She couldn’t develop true friendship.
4.From Fiona’s mother’s words, we can know the mother is a ________ person.
A.smart B.strict C.brave D.humorous
5.What lesson does the passage mainly teach us?
A.Parents are a child’s first teachers.
B.Kind words are the music of the world.
C.A strong friendship really needs time and care.
D.Close neighbours are better than distant relatives.

根据“Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from among all her classmates...But when all the presents had been made and shared out, she was the only one that didn’t receive a present! Fiona hadn’t expected this and felt terrible, crying for hours.”
根据“Everyone came to comfort her, but each stayed only a short time before leaving—just as she had done to others so many times.”

Have you ever noticed that some people are nicer to strangers than they are to their good friends? Have a look at your relationships and think about the people who have been there for you. They may be close friends or someone you have lunch with at work. Whatever the case, show them the respect by following these basic rules.

Many teenagers find themselves in a common dilemma (困境): Their parents often have every part of their lives planned out—from schoolwork and after-class activities to holidays. They long to make their own decisions and show their independence, but parents may not realize their growth and still keep the habit of arranging everything for them. 1 In fact, gaining parents’ trust doesn’t require big moves; small, practical actions can also show that they are ready for more control over their own lives.
2 Daily chores are a great starting point. For example, teenagers can take on tasks like cleaning their own rooms, washing dishes after meals, or cooking a simple breakfast on weekends. These small duties demonstrate (展示) that they don’t depend on others for basic (基础的) life needs and can take care of themselves.
3 If teenagers want to learn a new skill like surfing or painting, they can research classes or training programs on their own. They can even offer to cover part of the cost with their saved pocket money. 4 It shows parents that they have thought through the plan carefully and are willing to take responsibility (责任) for their choices.
Changing parents’ long-formed habits takes patience. 5 Keep showing ability in small actions, and over time, parents will gradually realize their growth and be more willing to let them make their own plans.
A.Start with small daily jobs that are easy to complete.
B.Another way is to manage personal hobbies independently.

How to Ask Questions Politely
When you ask people questions in English, it could be a little impolite if you say something too directly. 1 And there are many different sentences and expressions that can help you sound more polite.
When you start a conversation, you can use “excuse me” or “pardon me” to get a person’s attention. 2 Or use “may” if you need to ask for permission (允许). Leading right away with a question word, like “who”, “what”, “why”, “where”, or “how”, might make your question sound impolite.
When you’re not sure if the person can answer your question, you can use “know” or “remember”. Sometimes you may ask a question to which the other person doesn’t know the answer. 3 Start your question with “Do you remember” or “Do you know”, so they can easily say “yes” or “no”. Some examples of using these phrases include (包括): “Do you know when the meeting starts?” or “Do you happen to know when she’s supposed to arrive?”
4 As the person gives you their answer, give them your full attention and don’t talk over them. Wait until the person is completely finished, so you get their full answer.
It’s polite to show you’re listening carefully. How can you do that without saying “I’m listening”? Using some body language is a good way. Look into the person’s eyes or nod (点头) to show that you’re interested in what they are talking about. 5
Whether you get the answer you want or not, you should express thanks in the end.
A.When the other person is answering, you shouldn’t cut in.
B.You can even repeat what the person has said to show that.
C.You should do something to take some of the pressure off them.

How to Communicate with Our Parents
Communication with our parents is one of the first things we have done since we were born. As we grow older, we’ll find it’s not easy to communicate with our parents openly and effectively. So what should we do when communicating with them? Here are some of my ideas.
Firstly, we can make a list of things that we and our parents disagree about most. Try to find out the reason why we disagree with them. Accept each other’s ideas little by little. If there are still disagreements, we’d better not get too angry. Secondly, we should talk with them more. Sharing ideas can make parents and children closer. Besides,we should also learn how to really listen. Listening is a skill that must be learned and practiced. Finally, be sure to be polite. We and our parents are a family in which everyone should be loved and cared about.

Dear Editors,
Teamwork is like a powerful engine that drives people towards success. In my opinion, the beauty of teamwork is that everyone can bring their strengths together to achieve a common goal. Recently, I joined a volunteer project to clean up a local park. My classmates and I divided tasks based on our interests, and we cooperated closely. Some of us picked up trash, while others planted flowers. Working as a team not only made the job efficient but also fun.
Through this experience, I realized that effective teamwork builds strong friendships and makes our world a better place.
Yours,
Li Hua

C.Advice on Making Friends D.Improvements of Social Life
A.parents and children love each other.
B.parents try to offer good services to children
C.parents can communicate in different languages
D.parents and children use the right way of expressing love
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The writer and his parents like the same kind of food.
B.The writer expressed love in speech more than in action.
C.Parents can easily accept the way their children show love.
D.Children’s language of love is always similar to their parents’.
B.To explain how to choose perfect gifts for parents.
C.To compare ways of expressing love between generations.
D.To stress the importance of understanding different love languages.

(F)
Have you ever noticed that some people are nicer to strangers than they are to their good friends? Have a look at your relationships and think about the people who have been there for you. They may be close friends or someone you have lunch with at work. Whatever the case, show them the respect by following these basic rules.
Respect personal space. Everyone needs a little room, including your friends. Don’t crowd them, or they may push back.
1 Your friends’ time is as important as yours, and you should meet them on time.
Avoid arguing about some problems. 2 It is common. And when this happens, keep all discussions on the facts but don’t say anything hurtful.
Follow the Golden Rule. If your friends treat you well and help you when you have trouble, they may also need your help when they are down. 3
Stop phubbing (低头症). This is important. When your friends talk to you, don’t spend most of your time talking on the phone. 4 And they might not want to go out with you if you continue to do this.
There is never any reason to be rude to someone around you in your life. 5 Sometimes you may disagree with others, but you can speak to them slowly. When you make a mistake, be ready to say sorry.
A.Don’t be late.
B.It makes them think that you don’t listen to them.
C.You may have different opinions from your friends.

C.This situation often leaves teenagers feeling untrusted and upset.
D.This isn’t just about sharing costs—it’s a sign of careful planning.
E.Don’t get discouraged if parents don’t change their minds right away.

D.Then you can use “can”, “could” or “would” when you make a request.
E.That’s why you are expected to use indirect words when you make requests.
(I)
Trust has been considered to be the basis of any relationship, including friendship. No relationship can last long without trust. 1 Sometimes it takes years, even a whole life to make it. We certainly know whom we trust. However, how do we know if others trust us?
2 You may first like to talk to the friends you trust most. It is the same with your friends.
Whom do you ask for advice when you need it the most? Either your parents or your friends may first come into your mind. You only ask for advice from the people you really trust. You know they will never pass on a wrong suggestion. And so do they. 3 Different ideas and discussions are a part of every relationship, and this is also true for friendship. Actually, two people can’t always have the same opinions on a situation and they may share different suggestions. Sometimes some people find it hard to forgive (原谅) and forget. 4 It is because they trust you and believe that you will never cause any pain to them on purpose.
There are times in life when you find yourself a lonely soldier. 5 Your friends will never let you down and will strongly stand for you when you need encouragement. If they side with you when you need them the most, you can know that they trust you.
A.But winning trust is not as easy as we imagine.
B.Whom would you like to share your secrets with?
C.But for your true friends, there is no difficulty in it.
D.They don’t like their friends with different opinions.
E.It will be necessary for you to stay in touch with your friends.
F.However, if you have true friends, you will never be alone in any trouble.
G.The friends who trust you will go to you for help in the important decisions of their lives.

The American writer Mark Twain once 1 (say), “I can live for two months on a good compliment (赞美).” Perhaps his words sound dramatic, but it’s true that compliments can really make people feel good. They can give us the 2 (confident) we need to finish a project or to improve 3 (we). They can even turn a bad day into a good one.
Compliments also play 4 important role in social communication. They can 5 (use) to greet a friend or relatives, to start up a conversation at a party, or to show our appreciation to someone. Compliments are only meaningful, however, if they are sincere. In 6 (give) a compliment, we should not say anything we don’t really mean.
It is also important to know how to accept a compliment 7 (polite). For English-speakers, the 8 (good) answer is often a simple “thank you” spoken with a cheerful voice. Some compliments might also be acceptable, especially if the person who gave the compliment is trying to start up a conversation. 9 example, if someone compliments you on your clothing, you might mention when or where you bought it or some other bits of 10 (information). Another good way is to offer a compliment in return.

As we walk the “path of life”, we may sometimes wish to be alone, for quiet reflection (反思) can lead to 1 (person) improvement. However, social life is also important to us. We 2 (find) three “fruits” of friendship already: they may comfort the heart, advise the head and help us reach the goals we set for 3 (us).
The first fruit of friendship is the peace that comes from sharing with friends our joy, sadness, success and failure. Here, friendship has a double advantage—happiness takes on a greater meaning and a trouble shared becomes half! We know that our true friends 4 (respect) our feelings and treasure these moments of closeness if we share our joy and sadness together.
The second fruit of friendship is the better understanding of ourselves and our problems. We often find it 5 (easy) to recognize other people’s weaknesses than our own. Our friends are better able to offer advice on important 6 (decide) that we all have to make. Also, 7 (talk) about our problems with a friend, we have to put our thoughts into words first. This helps us understand our own situation more clearly.
The 8 (three) fruit of friendship is the help that a friend may offer in many different ways. Sometimes a friend 9 (know) as our “second self”. There are so many things in life that can only be reached with the help of friends. Their different ideas and skills may help us get what we want during life.
In short, friends should be 10 (care) chosen and developed. In this way, we can better walk the “path of life” with the comfort, advice and help from our trusted friends.
