I always expected the worst in any scenes-focusing on the 2%death rate of a 98%
successful surgery and visualizing my son's mild cough as a rare condition.
I spent years avoiding activities that I was sure would end in misfortune.I became a
helicopter mom, checking the backyard for anything dangerous before letting David out to play
-under my strict monitoring.
Without my husband Don's insistence, our son would never have learned to throw a ball.
He argued I couldn't keep watching over our four-year-old boy all the time and preventing him
from doing sports and activities.Unwilling as I was,I knew he was right and left the "boy stuff
to Daddy.
One day,David was carefully wrapping his Superman figure in a piece of bubble wrap(
)My first reaction was to take it away from him so he wouldn't accidentally choke-
until he spoke."There! Now you're safe when flying into pointy buildings,"he told his
childhood hero.
Suddenly, unpleasant realities struck me.I regularly refused all the different crowd outings
because of panic over emergency.Though we went camping occasionally,I ruined their joy by
wondering how many bears would kill us in our sleep. But seeing my son repeat my previous
behavior by wrapping a superhero woke me up.
That night,I suggested going to a concert downtown."Aren't you worried there might be
a fire or something?"my husband asked,genuinely astonished.I knew I deserved that,but I let
it go."Always...But we'll cross that bridge if we come to it."That would become my new
belief,no matter how difficult it was to say that first time.
I regret the roads not taken because of my imagined assumptions, but my determination to
change grows.I will always be grateful to my son and Superman, who made my increasingly
smaller world become bigger, brighter, more positive, and happier.

AI Morality (Oxford University Press,2024),edited by British philosopher David
Edmonds,is a collection of essays exploring how AI will completely change our lives and the
moral dilemmas it will set off, painting a picture of the reasons to be cheerful and to worry. In
this 'excerpt(节选),Muriel Leuenberger,,a postdoctoral researcher in the ethics(道德)of
technology and AI at the University of Zurich, focuses on this very modern identity crisis.
An AI that tells you who you are and what you should do is based on the idea that your
identity is something you can discover-information you or an AI may access. But this view
misses an important point:we also choose who we are.
Constantly relying on AI recommendation systems might calcify your identity.By
recommending products and other contents, you become more likely to consume, think, and act
in the way the AI system initially considered suitable for you, gradually influencing you so
much that you develop into who it wanted you to be.
This is,however,not a necessary feature of recommendation systems.In theory,they
could be designed to broaden the user's horizons, instead of maximizing involvement by
showing customers what they already like.In practice, that's not how they function.
Besides,by giving decisions to Al,you may fail to meet the moral demand to take
responsibility for who you are. This'concern weighs particularly heavy when making the most
substantial decisions. But even in ordinary cases like selecting movies, music, books,or news,
it would be good to put recommendation systems aside from time to time, which in turn, calls
for research,risk,and self-reflection.
An AI might state a lot of facts about you,but it is your job to find out what they mean to
you and how you let them define you.The same holds for actions.Your actions are not just a
way of seeking well-being.Through your actions, you choose what kind of person you are.

It's a race against time,as generations of cultural heritage restorers at the Dunhuang
Academy make a great effort to protect the artistic charm of the Mogao Caves,a UNESCO
World Heritage Site.
The team is committed to protecting the 45,000 square meters of murals (and more
than 2,400 painted sculptures of the 735 caves of the site. The cultural relics are the product of
the cultural exchanges that took place over centuries on the ancient Silk Road."Our work,
repairing murals and painted sculptures,is to better preserve the caves, which promotes the
great Dunhuang spirit of inclusiveness to the world and inspires modemn people,"says Su
Bomin,director of the Dunhuang Academy.
Commonly seen“diseases'”affecting the murals include cracking and chipping(裂),as
well as erosion (that is caused by changes in temperature and moisture of the caves. To
restore a mural requires a multi-talented individual,and restorers should know painting,master
the skills of craft and have some knowledge of chemistry and physics,to be able to recognize
the problems and their corresponding causes and deliver a solution. They must also select
proper materials and tools, and conduct experiments, before formally carrying out the
restoration and evaluating the effect afterward.
The restoration should respect the original work and aim to maintain the current situation
of the murals rather than repainting them. When the restorers find some parts of murals missing
or fading away, they never repaint them to create a "perfect"appearance in restoration.
"Cultural relics are witnesses to history,"explains Su."When you pursue the so-called perfect
look for artistic reasons, you will lose their key meaning."
Cave conservation is about continuously solving problems."It needs a long-term research
to better preserve the caves, over a much wider time span that goes beyond our lifetime,"Su
says. But at least, they can keep the current look of the murals for as long as possible.

Have you ever thought that taking short breaks during a walk could actually help you burn
more calories?
Scientists have discovered that short bursts of activity can burn more energy than
continuous exercise. For example, several groups of quick walks or stair climbs for just 10 to
30 seconds use 20%to 60%more energy than walking nonstop for the same distance.36
Similar to a car using more fuel when starting a journey, our body works harder at the
beginning of any movement. This is because it needs to warm up our muscles and get into a
rhythm. These short bursts of activity might not last long, but they require a lot of energy.
37As someone who sits most of the day,I used to think exercise meant hours at
the gym.But when I tried replacing my afternoon coffee breaks with three 90-second stair
climbs, something surprising happened.38My body adjusted to the activity, and what
once felt like a struggle gradually turned into a manageable routine. As this happened,I
unexpectedly felt more focused and energized throughout the day. These "exercise snacks"fit
well into my busy schedule, proving that working out doesn't require large blocks of time.
39 Every stair climb or short walk wakes up the body.Health isn't built in a day
at the gym-it's made through small, consistent actions.Simply replace one of your usual
sitting breaks with just a single minute of walking, and you'll be amazed at how small actions
can reshape your physical vitality.40

第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
A few weeks later, Peter was walking home when something unexpected caught his attention. In the distance, he saw a familiar figure in worn-out clothes, covered in dust and sweat, lifting heavy bricks with her weathered hands at the construction site. As he drew closer, he realized it was his mother, Catherine. Catherine tirelessly moved heavy bricks with her ugly and rough hands under the burning sun. Her face was covered in sweat, and she didn’t even have time to wipe it off as she rushed back and forth. Peter stood there in shock, unable to utter a single word. Meanwhile, a wave of guilt and regret flooded over him. He shouldn’t have said those hurtful words.
Paragraph 2:
On his way back home, he kept thinking about how he would apologize to his mother. Peter couldn’t shake off the guilt and regret for his hurtful words towards his mother. He knew he had to make things right and apologize to her. The moment Catherine stepped into the house from work, Peter rushed up to her, gently took her hands in his and held them tightly. “Mom, I’m sorry”, he murmured, tears welling up in his eyes, “I know how hard you work for us. Your hands may be rough, but they are the most beautiful hands in the world.” Catherine embraced her son, a wave of happiness washing over her. On the contest day, Peter not only attended the school event with his mother but also stood by her side, holding her hands with pride.

W: What are you doing this weekend?
M: I’m going to the flower festival with my parents. You’re going to the music festival then, aren’t you? I heard they’ve got some fantastic bands this year and are expecting thousands of visitors!
W: Yes, that’s right. My friend’s father is organizing the event, so we’ve got free tickets.
M: Lucky you!
W: Yes, but we’ve both got to help. My friend’s got to check tickets. He’s asked me to take photos, and I don’t mind doing that.

W: Did you see that documentary, Nature Watch, last night?
M: I did. I wouldn’t want to miss anything from that series. I didn’t think it was as good as last week’s one on elephants, though.
W: I actually find dolphins much more interesting, so I thought last night’s one was better. The next one’s about bears, which should be great.
M: Yeah, I can’t wait. There is one problem with the series though.
W: Oh, what’s that?
M: I really can’t find any problem with the camera work, but I think whoever wrote the music shouldn’t be asked to do it for a nature series again. It’s a bit annoying, especially when I try to focus on the story.

(Text 8)
M: Sally, tell me something about your gap year.
W: Oh, well, my gap year was very different from yours! I decided to stay at home and work.
M: Oh, why did you decide to do that?
W: Actually, I had to. My family are not rich, so I had to work to pay for my university courses.
M: And did you enjoy that?
W: Hmm, it was OK. The pay was not that good, and the work itself was not creative, but I got on well with the people I worked with. So, do you feel a gap year is a good thing?
M: Yes! It was a great chance to see the world before I went to university.
W: You’re lucky, Rob!

W: So, I’ve decided to make a wish list like I was telling you. I’ve put down some ideas, but now I can’t think of anything else. Any ideas?
M: Have you ever been on a hot-air balloon ride?
W: No, I haven’t.
M: It’s really fun — you get great views of the city and the countryside. You should definitely add it to your list.
W: Right, OK, hot-air balloon ride.
M: Have you thought about joining a drama club? You could perform in a play.
W: Well, that’s a challenge! I’ve never performed in a play. Anything else?
M: Here’s another idea. Have you ever been to a film festival?
W: No, I’ve never done that, but I’d like to.
M: And here’s another one. I know you care about animals. Why don’t you start a local group to raise money for wildlife?
W: Yes, that’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

(Text 10)
M: Good morning, everyone. If you ask me which city I really want to visit, it’s Rome, the capital of Italy. It’s a city that has always attracted me because of its culture. I’m particularly interested in its architecture since it has examples from all major European styles of building. Besides, it was the capital of the Roman Empire, so it has a wonderful collection of public buildings from that time.
What I think is great about Rome is that many of the beautiful and historic buildings are still in use, as galleries, public offices and even houses. They are not all locked up as museums, so it’s really living history there. Even though it’s an expensive city to stay in, I’d like to go there for at least a month, as there’s so much to see and do. During my time there, I’d have to be careful that I didn’t spend too much on Roman food! Plus, I’d like to find a cheap hotel. It would probably be in the centro storico, the old center of the city, probably within walking distance of the River Tevere. Most visitors to Rome would agree that it is a very special place but for me, it’s Europe’s most historic and romantic city.
