At 18, I competed in my first marathon (马拉松) in Dublin, Ireland. At that time, I was an excellent 400-meter runner at high school, but got it into my head that I should try the longer distance to prove that I was really good at running — and what was better than the marathon?
Back then, the running craze hadn’t quite heated up to the point it has today and running a marathon was unknown to most people. Besides, I never knew anyone who had actually run a marathon.
On the way from England to Dublin, I was wondering what I was getting myself in two days later when the race would begin. I tried to get some sleep to ease my nerves, but I found it hard.
The race day was somewhat cloudy, but the warmth of the people forced the clouds away. My limited memories of that first race remain: the feeling of running through tunnel (隧道) of people as the crowds lined the streets; the cheers from the crowds as the news came that an Irishman had won the race; what’s the most impressive, the kindness of the crowds encouraging me on as I hit the wall and tried to struggle through. Eventually, I didn’t get the prize, but I never gave up and regarded it as a success because I challenged myself.
After my first marathon, I started a website based on my love of running Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or just an interested passer-by, I invite you to get involved in the website and make it your home. Runners and particularly marathoners seem to share common ideals. They’re part of a global team and a global community.

A. To show his talent for running. B. To win a prize in. a longer distance race.
C. To attract the public's attention to running. D. To express his preference for 400-meter running.
5. What impressed the author deeply during his first marathon?
A. He hit the wall and tried to struggle through. B. He ran through a tunnel with other racers.
C. He nearly got lost due to the cloudy weather. D. He received lots of encouragement from the crowds.
6. What can we know about the author’s website?
A. It aims to help running lovers. B. It has got a lot of attention.
C. It attaches great importance to community spirit. D. It was set up mainly for experienced marathoners.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Kind and creative. B. Capable and positive.
C. Proud and ordinary. D. Confused and sensitive.

There are many American expressions about insects.
Bees are known as very hard workers. So you might say you were as busy as a bee if you spent your weekend cleaning your house. In fact, you might say your house was a beehive of activity if your whole family was helping you clean. You also might say you made a beeline for something if you went there right away. When we go to see a movie,my friend always makes a beeline for the place where they sell popcorn. If something was the best of its kind, you might say it was the bee's knees. Now,we admit that we do not know how this expression developed. In fact,we do not even know if bees have knees! If your friend cannot stop talking about something because she thinks it is important, you might say she has a bee in her bonnet. If someone asks you a personal question, and you would like not to tell him or her,you might say,"That is none of your beeswax."
Butterflies are beautiful insects, but you would not want to have butterflies in your stomach. That means to be nervous about having to do something, like speaking in front of a crowd. You would also not want to have ants in your pants. That is,to be restless and unable to sit still.
If a friend keeps asking you to do something you do not want to do,you might ask him to leave you alone or "stop bugging me". A friend also might tell you again and again to do something. If so,you might say he put a bug in your ear. If you were reading a book in your warm bed on a cold winter's day,you might say you were snug as a bug in a rug. And,if you wish someone good night, you might say,"sleep tight﹣don't let the bed bugs bite."
8. When you describe a wonderful bike of your friend, you can say .
A. it makes a beeline
B. it is the bee's knees
C. it is a beehive of activity
D. it has a bee in its bonnet
9. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 means" ".
A. has nothing to do with you
B. draws your attention
C. goes wrong
D. is the bee's knees
10. In the text, butterflies and ants are used to .
A. speak highly of a beautiful person
B. describe a person without confidence
C. stand for bad effects on a person
D. comfort a person in a bad mood
11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The word "bug" can be a noun or a verb.
B. Bug is a kind of good insects for man.
C. Bugs live mainly in human's ears.
D. A bug in a rug is very danger.

Chinese scientists have designed the first AI-powered robot lifeguard (机器人救生员), which is able to operate without the need for any human help. Researchers have been testing the robot at a riverside site in Luohe city in the central province of Henan and it will be positioned there forever.
The robot uses AI, big data and tracking technologies to operate 24 hours a day without any human control or presence, according to the team from the Hefei Institutes (研究所) of Physical Science. The leader notes that it is the robot lifeguard strength compared to humans.
The lifeguard will use an algorithm (算法) to decide if someone is drowning (溺水) and is equipped with a life-saving buy and rescue arm in order to pull people out of the water, if they are unable to hold onto its sides by themselves. Drowning can be fast and silent and there is an important period of five minutes or less to rescue someone, which means that a robot that can reach the scene more quickly than any human could make the difference between life and death.
The robot lifeguard is designed to operate within a specific area of water, and needs a network of 100 cameras to provide 24-hour observation of the whole area. The camera images are sent to a server that uses an algorithm to tell if someone is in trouble in the water, in which case it will send out the lifeguard.
The robot is set up to plan the rescue route based on the drowning person’s location and has an intelligent imaging system designed to track the target by itself. Once the target is reached, it will send out its emergency equipment and use its rescue arm if needed.
“Although some waters in China have early warning systems for drowning accidents, the quickness, correctness and controlling range of these existing methods are not enough, and emergency rescue operations are mainly done by people, with slow actions and a shortage of rescue equipment,” the Hefei Institutes said when announcing the project.
It is not the first robot lifeguard, but it is the first fully self-operating one that operates without any need for human help.
12. What advantage does the robot lifeguard have over human rescuers?
A. It can swim significantly faster than any human.
B. It can rescue more than one person at the same time.
C. It does not require rest and can operate all day long.
D. It can save drowning people without the help of doctors.
13. What is the main function of the AI-powered robot lifeguard?
A. To replace human lifeguards completely.
B. To control water quality in rivers and lakes.
C. To train human lifeguards in emergency response.
D. To identify drowning accidents and provide rescue.
14. How does the robot lifeguard decide if someone is drowning?
A. By listening carefully to screams for help when necessary.
B. By processing images from cameras with an AI algorithm.
C. By using temperature equipment to measure body heat correctly.
D. By responding to human operators’ directions as quickly as one can.
15. What does the Hefei Institutes say about existing drowning warning systems in China?
A. They are far from correct but extremely expensive.
B. They are only used in swimming pools, ponds, not rivers.
C. They are fully self-controlling but often break down easily.
D. They rely too much on human rescuers and performed poorly.

The Right Thing to Do
Fauna had always dreamed of keeping a pet. Time and again, she asked her parents but they would say: “We’ll see.”
One afternoon, on her way home from school, Fauna saw a little dog walking near the park. Its fur was messy, and it looked lost, sniffing the ground as if looking for something. Feeling curious and hopeful, Fauna bent down and called to it. The dog quickly ran over, wagging (摇) its tail and gently pressing its nose into her hand, like they had known each other forever.
She looked around, but no one seemed to be looking for the dog. Feeling pity for the lost dog, Fauna decided to take it home. As they walked side by side, her heart was filled with joy. It felt as if this was the pet she had always dreamed of - a friend she had been waiting for.
At the front door, Fauna’s mother greeted her with a warm smile. Although she found the dog lovely, she gently reminded Fauna that they needed to try and find its owner. If the dog was lost, someone must be missing it. Fauna reluctantly (不情愿地) agreed, though she wished no one would come to take the little dog back.
Over the next few days, Fauna and the dog-whom she named Buddy-became good friends. She fed him, played with him, and let him sleep at the foot of her bed. Every day, it became harder to imagine life without him. Buddy seemed happy too, wagging his tail whenever she came home from school. But Fauna knew that she had to do the right thing. She and her parents posted flyers (传单) around the town, hoping to find Buddy’s owner.
Just a few days later, the phone rang. Fauna’s heart sank as her father answered. From the conversation, it was clear that the caller was Buddy’s owner. He described Buddy perfectly. Fauna knew Buddy would soon be leaving her. Her father was prepared for the owner to come by and pick Buddy up.

A. speak highly of a beautiful person
B. describe a person without confidence
C. stand for bad effects on a person

【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. D

My Best Friend
As the saying goes, “Friendship is like sunshine. It keeps us warm and helps us grow.”, which reminds me of my best friend, Li Juan, a girl with great determination and patience.
It is since kindergarten that we have been best friends. Thanks to the convenience of the social media, I can stay in touch with her all the time though we study in different schools. Whenever disagreement turns up, we both tend to communicate and have them solved in time. Above all, although we have our own preferences, we can learn and benefit a lot from each other and bring out the best.
I really hope to have our friendship last forever regardless of time and distance.

【答案】
When the man arrived, the little dog happily ran into his arms, barking with joy. Fauna watched as Buddy wagged his tail furiously, licking the man’s face with excitement. It was clear that Buddy remembered his owner and was overjoyed to see him again. The man thanked Fauna and her family for taking such good care of Buddy. Fauna knelt down to give Buddy one last hug, whispering, “I’ll miss you, Buddy.” As the man led Buddy away, Fauna stood at the door, waving until they were out of sight.
That evening, Fauna sat quietly in her room, feeling a little sad. Her parents noticed her sadness and sat down with her. Her father said, “How about visiting the animal shelter this weekend? If you’re ready, maybe we can find a pet that needs a home — one that we can keep forever.” Fauna’s eyes lit up, and a small smile returned to her face. She realized that while saying goodbye to Buddy was hard, it had also opened the door to a new possibility — a chance to give another animal a loving home.
