What will our life be like in 50 years? No one knows the answer exactly (确切地), but we are sure that it will be very different from the life today. My brother Jim Green makes some predictions. Here are some of his ideas.
First, people will have less work to do, and robots will do most work. People will use robots to make cars, do the housework, look after sick people and teach students. People will spend most of their time playing sports and traveling. So people will become stronger and healthier, and they will live to be about 200 years old.
Second, cars will become very small and computers will control (控制) their speed. So there will be fewer accidents on the road. Planes will be very popular and most people would like to take them to travel.
Third, people will be able to live in the sea, on the moon or on Mars. The earth won’t be crowded or noisy. So there will be more space for people to plant trees. There will be less pollution, and the air will become much fresher.
Finally, water shortage will become one of the most serious problems. If people don’t save water now, there will be water wars in 50 years.
59. Jim Green thinks that in 50 years robots will help people do the following things EXCEPT (除了) ________.
A. look after sick people B. drive cars
C. teach students D. do the housework
60. Jim Green thinks most people will travel ________ in 50 years.
A. by bike B. by plane C. by train D. by car
61. According to Jim Green, ________ in 50 years.
A. every family will have a car
B. people won’t need to work
C. computers will control the cars’ speed
D. the earth will become crowded and noisy

There are four friends at a restaurant. They’re waiting for a fifth friend who is already 20 minutes late. They want to know if (是否) he will say “sorry” for being late. After another five minutes, he finally arrives.
However, he doesn’t say “sorry”when he arrives. To their surprise, he simply says, “Hey, thanks for waiting.” The others say “You are welcome” and then they open their menus and start to order food. Life goes on and all is fine.
Canadian sociologist (社会学家) Maja Jovanovic tells this story in a TED speech. In her speech, Jovanovic says that sometimes we should say “thank you” instead of “sorry”. Sometimes, “Thank you” can sound better than“sorry”.

You might not know the name Beverly Cleary, but perhaps you have read one of her books—Ramona the Pest, Dear Mr. Henshaw, among many other titles. Cleary is one of the world’s most popular children’s writers. By showing that stories about ordinary (普通的) kids could be interesting, too, she changed the world of children’s books.
As a child, Cleary had trouble learning to read. Even after she had learned to love reading, she still found many books boring. The girl felt like the people she was reading about had little to do with her or her life. She wanted to read funny books about children like herself.
When she grew up, Cleary became a librarian (图书管理员). One day, some boys asked her, “Where are the books about kids like us? ”Cleary realized there weren’t many books about ordinary kids, so she began to write some. Her first book, Henry Huggins, tells the story of a boy and his dog. Huggins is just an ordinary third—grader, but the book soon became a hit.
Cleary went on to write more books about Huggins and the other children in his neighborhood. From this neighborhood, “Ramona the Pest”became Cleary’s best—known character. She is always getting into trouble. Whenever Ramona gets into trouble, it’s often funny, but it’s also something most kids can understand. Cleary knew what it really felt like to be a kid.
Unlike many other children’s writers, Cleary liked to focus on (聚焦) real—life problems. In several of her books, the parents have money problems or are unhappy with their jobs. Cleary dealt with these situations with a gentle sense of humor and a deep understanding.
Cleary wrote over 40 books in all. More than 91 million copies of her books have been sold. The great writer died at the age of 104 on March 25, 2021. Although she is no longer with us, her characters and stories will continue to be loved by many for years to come.

For example, you are feeling sad about something, and you’re talking about it with a friend for long. You might say “Thank you for listening” but not “Sorry for talking too much”. Sometimes, “Thank you” can sound better than“sorry”.
63. How late is the fifth friend?
A. 15 minutes late. B. 20 minutes late. C. 25 minutes late. D. 30 minutes late.

Do you eat breakfast every day? A new study shows if you don’t have breakfast, you will be in great danger of getting heart disease (心脏病).
Scientists studied the information of 6,550 people over 40 years old for 18 years. Those people had no history of heart disease. 59% of them ate breakfast every day. 25% missed breakfast for a few days. 10.9% hardly ate breakfast and 5.1% never did. The scientists found a clear relation between breakfast habits and the danger of getting heart disease. Those who didn’t eat in the morning were up to 87% more likely to have heart disease.
Breakfast is an essential meal of the day, but a lot of people didn’t have it over the past 50 years in the US. 23.8% of young people don’t have breakfast every day.
About the relation, the scientists gave a few reasons. First, when people don’t eat breakfast, they may eat much junk food. Second, breakfast helps to balance blood sugar levels (平衡血糖水平).
A similar study shows people who don’t eat breakfast and eat dinner late are more likely to get heart disease. Also, they are more likely to spend little time exercising and have other bad living habits.
For your health, remember to eat breakfast every day.
66. Of the 6,550 people in the study, how often did 59% of them eat breakfast?
A. Always. B. Sometimes. C. Hardly ever. D. Never.
67. How much more likely are people to have heart disease if they don’t eat breakfast?
A. Up to 10.9%. B. Up to 25%. C. Up to 59%. D. Up to 87%.
68. What may people do if they don’t have breakfast?
A. Eat much unhealthy food. B. Stay away from heart disease.
C Balance blood sugar levels. D. Eat dinner late in the evening.

My best friend is Margaret, who is American and is thirteen. She came to China with her family four years ago. At the beginning, she didn’t speak Chinese very well but now it’s different. She’s very hard-working and she’s fluent (流利的) in Chinese now. She’s also good at French.
Margaret is tall and beautiful. She has long curly brown hair and brown eyes. Both of us are studying in Fuxing Middle School, and we often go home and do homework together.
