一、阅读(共8小题;每小题5分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
It was my first visit to California. Moreover,it was my first time taking a plane and my first vacation
without my family.Far from being intimidated by these firsts,I was resolved to pack in as much as
possible right from the very first day.We drove to Disneyland, swam in the Pacific Ocean, visited a
ghost town, and took walks through downtown Sacramento.
The only problem was that I was getting homesick, and the more time went by,the worse it got.I
missed my family.I longed for my house,my own bed,and food that didn't include things like hot
sauce. Most of all,I pined for the weather back home.
I have always loved rain.I sit on the porch during thunderstorms, watch the lightning slice through
the air,and listen to the fall of rain.It is so heavy and constant that it sounds like a great bucket of
water being poured out of the sky.I slide on a raincoat to venture into a spring rain.I go outside after a
downpour and breathe in the heavy, earthy smell of a world washed clean.
The trouble was that it was summer in California, and they were having a drought to boot. The sun
casts its glorious rays day in and day out.It is not the case only this year. The weather here has been
like this all along.
"I am tired,and I miss being at home.And I am so tired of the heat."Finally,in desperation,I
added,"I know it's summer in California, but some rain would be what I desire most."
At that moment,a wet drop hit my arm. Then another drop hit me,and another. But sure enough,
it was raining.
My vacation ended joyfully, homesickness forgotten, and by the time I returned to New York,I had
wonderful memories of the fun trip.I treasured the time I was able to spend with my friend and the
adventure of exploring California, but most of all,I treasured that rain. Now I realize where there are
expectations,there will be miracles.

Strategically adding weak points along microscopic chains called polymers(高分子聚合物)
actually makes them harder to tear, researchers report in the June 23 Science.Polymers are used in car
tires, and therefore the findings could help reduce plastic pollution as tires wear down over time.
When tires rub against the road, they drop microplastics of rubber and plastic polymers, which
pollute waterways and air.Every year, tires release an estimated 6 million metric tons of these
microplastics into the environment.Stronger polymers that break apart less easily could limit the amount
of particles shed annually.
To make such tough materials,Stephen Craig,a chemist at Duke University, and colleagues added
molecules called cross-linkers to the polymers. These cross-linkers connected these polymer chains to
their many neighbors, and they were specifically designed to break apart easily. At the microscopic
scale, the polymers act like a tangle (of spaghetti with the cross-linkers holding them all together
and helping them keep their shape, says Craig's collaborator Shu Wang,a chemist at MIT.When the
team stretched the polymer spaghetti, the individual cross-linkers broke easily,as expected. But the
larger tangle material required more force to break than expected.
The secret to the increased toughness lies in the path the tear has to take,Craig says. The tear goes
through the easy-to-break cross-linkers rather than through the tougher polymer chains. Each broken
connection follows the path of least resistance but avoiding the long polymer chains means breaking many
cross-linkers,which requires more stretching force overall.
This isn't the first time researchers have used weak connectors to make polymers stronger. But
unlike in similar materials, the increased toughness doesn't come at the expense of other beneficial
properties like stiffness ()Craig says he hopes the findings will help extend the lifetimes of car
tires and plastics, potentially limiting annual microplastic pollution.
5.What benefit does the new material bring?
A.It meets the road standard.
B.It weakens plastic polymers.
C.It releases less microplastics.
D.It reduces the cost of car tires.
6.What can we know about the tangle material?
A.It follows the pattern of spaghetti.
B.It is designed to fall apart easily.
C.The polymers help keep its shape.
D.The larger tangle is harder to break.

7.What is the primary factor that contributes to the increased toughness?
A.The weakness of the cross-linker.
B.The strength of the polymer chains.
C.The number of the cross-linkers used.
D.The path the tear takes through the material.
8.What can we learn about the finding?
A.It initially uses weak connectors.
B.It sacrifices stiffness for toughness.
C.It lengthens the lifespan of car tires.
D.It removes annual microplastic pollution.
二、语法填空(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Qinghai Lake,China's largest inland saltwater lake,9 (expand)in size continuously for the
past 20 years, with the water level rising nearly 20 cm 10 average annually.Satellite remote sensing
in late September found that Qinghai Lake's water surface had reached over 4,650 square km,11
(return)to its size approximately 70 years ago.
Qinghai Lake,12 (locate)in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau,is 13
important ecological barrier in northern China and a key stopover site for migratory birds. It shrank from
around 4,600 square km in the 1950s to 4,244.5 square km in 2004 due to climate change and human
activities,with vegetation and wildlife affected.In 2008,Qinghai adopted a plan 14 (strengthen)
ecological protection and comprehensive management of the Qinghai Lake basin, with a total investment
of 1.57 billion yuan in 10 years.
Currently, the water quality in the main area of Qinghai Lake has 15 (consistent)remained
good over an extended period. The lake's unique species,16 name is naked carp, has seen a
remarkable population increase.Additionally, the number of Przewalski's gazelle in the basin 17
(rise)from 257 in 2004 to over 3,400.Resident waterbird populations have also increased,reaching
606,000-the highest count recorded since standardized monitoring began in 2007.
Sun Jianqing,an official from the Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve Administration said the
lake's 18 (recover)is due to more rain and 20-year efforts.
三、读后续写(满分40分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Justin and his friend David had known each other before they became classmates.David didn't seem
to mind that Justin was small for his age.But on the first day of school, when David and Justin had
lunch with the rest of the fifth-grade boys,Steven asked when David had started playing with babies,
which made Justin uneasy.
Several weeks later,David called to invite Justin to his birthday party at his grandfather's farm.
Justin didn't want to go initially because he had wanted to spend the day running. When he ran,the
problems at school didn't matter, and being the smallest kid in his class didn't matter, either.
This Saturday, however,he reached the farm with Steven.David's mother suggested that David
show the boys around,so David asked his grandfather,Mr.Hamilton,to drive them to the foot of a hill.
Mr.Hamilton left to prepare for the party. The boys decided to enter a cave,go out from a hole at its
top, climb the hill and then hike back.
The entrance to the cave was a big stone room with huge wooden pillars (supporting the

doorway.About thirty feet in was a wall of rocks blocking further entrance. From the hole in the ceiling,
light shone on the back wall.David started to show the boys how to climb up the back wall."Let me go
first,"Steven demanded. He grabbed David's belt and pulled him off the rock, throwing him onto the
ground.
"Watch out!"shouted Justin. But it was too late.David fell hard against a pillar and the wood
started to crack.A second later the pillar fell. Then part of the ceiling collapsed.Dust filled the air.
When the dust finally settled, the boys found themselves trapped in the cave and the only exit was the
hole in the ceiling, which became smaller-too small for anyone to go out.Worse still,a stream of water
was flowing into the cave.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Out of breath,Justin finally saw the farmhouse.
