I had an unpleasant time from the very moment I arrived in Beijing. Bad events came one after another. I got lost; I missed every activity I booked and had to rebook them; I felt cheated on some tours and got poorly treated by the tour guide…I said to myself, “Beijing isn’t really for me.”
With all of these misfortunes, it’s hard to believe that I had the best time in Beijing. That day, my translation app wasn’t working properly so I couldn’t have a conversation. I got lost and took the wrong bus. The driver and the bus guard were kind enough to let me stay on the bus so that they could drop me off at the right bus stop.
When I didn’t have one yuan to pay for the bus ticket, a kind lady paid for me. She got off the bus with me and didn’t leave until my bus came. We only communicated by sign language. She asked me if I was hungry and gave me a huge tomato and two delicious local buns. My bus came and she talked to the driver to make sure he would drop me off at my stop. I expressed my thanks to her many times with tears falling from my eyes. I cried the whole trip.

I had an unpleasant time from the very moment I arrived in Beijing. Bad events came one after another. I got lost; I missed every activity I booked and had to rebook them; I felt cheated on some tours and got poorly treated by the tour guide…I said to myself, “Beijing isn’t really for me.”

When Chinese people greet each other for the first time, they often ask, “May I know your family name, please?” There is no question that family names are very important to the Chinese. They are closely connected with the Chinese culture and values. In many ways, they hold the key to our understanding of the Chinese family history.
Chinese people usually talk about Baijiaxing or Surnames when it comes to Chinese family names. Written in the early Northern Song dynasty, the book recorded 504 common family names in China. But according to the present records, the Chinese have at least 5,662 family names altogether. 3,484 of them are single-character (单个字) family names, and 2,032 are two-character family names. Another 146 are three-character family names, which are hardly seen today.
Chinese family names have a history dating back more than 4,000 years. But the origin (起源) of them is very complex (复杂的). There is one family name with many origins, as well as several family names with the same origin. Still, there is the name that has changed into many in the course of the developed history.

On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper made a cell phone call (手机) while walking down the streets of New York. It was the first call ever made with a handheld (手持式的) cell phone.
