By the end of this section, we will be able to:
1. understand the quote highlighting the importance of creative thinking (创造性思维);
2. give additional answers to the creativity tests;
3. identify the qualities of creative people;
4. develop an interest in the topic of creativity.
Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward; they may be beaten,but they may start a winning game.
—Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
/ˌjəʊhæn ˈwʊlfɡæŋ vɒn ˈɡɜːtə/
dar·ing adj.
chess·man /ˈtʃesmæn/ 国际象棋棋子
What does the quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe mean?
The quote is intended to encourage people to be actively creative, and not to be afraid of difficulties or failures. In fact, these difficulties and failures may contribute to our final success.
Everyone can come up with creative ideas. Try the tests below to exercise your creative genius and discuss the following questions in pairs.
ex·er·cise /ˈeksəsaɪz/ vt.
ge·nius /ˈdʒiːniəs/ ~ for (doing) sth
Alternative use test
Everyday items can have a wide variety of unexpected uses. List as many possible ideas for how to use a cork.
Incomplete figure test
Things as simple as a line can open up interesting possibilities for creative minds. Look at the line below, see
what picture you can create based on this line and describe your picture.
in·com·plete /ˌɪnkəmˈpliːt/adj.
1) How is the cork used creatively in the first test?
Usually, a cork is used to close a glass bottle, but here it is used as a container for succulent plants to be planted inside. This may be surprising for most people.
2)Do you think the example is creative in the second test?
3) What is the purpose of these tests?
Yes. When I saw the line on the left, I imagined that it could be drawn as a pair of scissors. But the sweater on the right is obviously a more creative answer.
These tests are designed to show that we can use our minds to provide creative answers to daily objects. With imagination and creativity, we can make our lives more interesting.
4)What other creative answers can you give in the above tests?
A bottle cork could be used as a photo holder(支架), or with many bottle corks, a cork pinboard(软木告示牌) could be made.
I could use the incomplete line to create a few other completed drawings. For example, I can draw a person standing unsteadily on the ground, and the line can be the edge of the trousers. I can also create a swimming shark where the incomplete line can be the dorsal fin(背鳍 )coming out of the water.
5)What qualities do you think creative people share?
I think creative people are open-minded and curious about the world around them. They are also flexible and can easily adapt to various situations. They are not afraid to take risks and permit themselves to make mistakes. Also, they are independent in the way they think and do things.
6) In what fields do you think creative thinking is particularly needed?
In my view, creative thinking is particularly needed in the field of art, because in the process of artistic creation, it is often by avoiding conventional thinking that artists can create truly unique works of art.
7)How can you apply creative thinking in your study?
As students, we can apply creative thinking in our study by keeping an open mind, being curious and engaging in exploration. In this way, thinking creatively would become a habit which could help us find more solutions to study problems.
