B Ellie Hamby, 84, from Abilene, Texas, and Dr. Sandy Hazelip, 84, from Eastland, Texas, dreamed of traveling the world and it finally happened. They shared their intention to travel the world together in a video online — and, more importantly, how they made it happen. Hamby and Hazelip talked about their journey together and what they have learned from the world at over 80 years old. The women’s friendship began over 20 years ago on a medical trip in Zambia, Africa, where Hamby and her late husband were directors and Hazelip was one of the physicians. Later on in Texas, both women found themselves facing life alone after their husbands passed away — but their bond was solidified when Hazelip moved in with Hamby for a few nights a week when she received an opportunity to open a clinic at a facility near Hamby. Over the years, those moments together grew into a deep-seated friendship. The pair started their adventures together to remote places almost two decades ago, but it was their latest, most ambitious trip that brought them to the world’s attention. “We’ve been to all seven continents, most of the world’s wonders and to almost 50 countries,” Hamby said. “The best highlights aren’t about the places, but about the people we met along the journey.” And their journeys have not been without moments of excitement, including a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway and a trip to the Middle East in 2011. Their most-recent senior travel adventure, the around-the-world-in-80-days trip, was done in 80 consecutive days, just like in Jules Verne’s novel — traveling day after day with no breaks. Hamby and Hazelip said they had no idea their travels would turn them into social-media celebrities, but they now get recognized at airports after a video received over 6 million views. “Never in our wildest dreams did we think something like this would ever happen to us,” the friends said. For those who may feel it is too late to live out their dreams, Hamby and Hazelip offered a powerful final message: “Get up out of your easy chair; step out of your comfort zone; make a plan and live.” 4. Where did Ellie Hamby and Dr. Sandy Hazelip first meet? A. In Abilene, Texas. B. On a medical mission in Zambia. C. At a clinic near Hamby’s home. D. During their around-the-world trip. 5. What do Ellie Hamby and Dr. Sandy Hazelip think is the best part of their travels? A. Visiting all seven continents. B. Seeing most of the world’s wonders. C. Meeting different people along the way. D. Taking the Trans-Siberian Railway. 6. What does the underlined word “consecutive” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Continuous. B. Separate. C. Occasional. D. Memorable. 7. What does two women’s experience show? A Interest is the best teacher. B. Traveling can make people famous. C. Social media is essential for traveling. D. Age is not a barrier to pursuing one’s dreams. C Earlier this year, we learned from older adults that music serves as a powerful coping (应对) mechanism and source of escapism, with other studies also noting its role in providing companionship. This led us to question whether music’s impact on imagination could be scientifically proven. Can music truly be good company? Listening to music often causes mental imagery — simulating scenarios (模拟场景) not physically present. Research indicates that 77% of online music listeners, 73% of lab participants, and 83% of concert-goers experience such imagery. To explore further, we conducted experiments using a scene from the video game Journey, asking participants to imagine the journey’s continuation. They rated their imagination’s vividness, distance, and time traveled, with music generally enhancing these aspects compared to silence. Music not only shapes the vividness of participants’ imagination but also the content of their imaginations. Complex stories emerge, often sharing similarities among those from the same cultural background. Heroic music, for instance, inspires uplifting themes. New events in these imagined stories match the patterns of musical tension. Our latest study specifically explored whether music gives rise to imagined social interactions. We had 600 participants perform the imaginary journey task with or without Italian, Spanish, or Swedish folk music, with or without lyrics (歌词), and among native and non-native speakers. Natural language processing revealed social interaction as the dominant topic in imagined journeys, especially while listening to music, regardless of lyrics’ comprehension or presence. To visualize these imagined journeys, we employed a generative AI system, Stable Diffusion, changing text descriptions into images. The results, supported by human-conducted analyses, showed three times more social interactions in music-inspired journeys. Finally when presenting these images to another group, they could distinguish between music-inspired and silent-imagined content, but only when exposed to the same music. This suggests a shared understanding, or “theory of mind,” of what others might imagine while listening to music. Our findings collectively confirm that music can indeed be good company, shaping and enriching our imaginations. 8. Why did the researchers use a scene from the video game Journey? A. To explore how music affects imagination. B. To prove music’s role in a video game. C. To show the popularity of Journey. D. To test participants’ creative skills. 9. What conclusion can we draw from Paragraph 3? A. Music has little influence on story complexity. B. Lyrics are essential for inspiring imaginative stories. C. Musical tension leads to negative events in imagination. D. Cultural background affects how people interpret heroic music. 10. What was the main purpose of using Stable Diffusion in the experiment? A. To replace human participants with AI completely. B. To test whether AI enjoys listening to different types of music. C. To compare human creativity against machine-generated content. D. To visually represent participants’ imagined journeys for analysis. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Developing Intelligence: The Power of Music B. The Impact of Music on Culture C. Music: Good Company for the Imagination D. The Development of Different Music in Europe D Brightly colored songbirds called tanagers (唐纳雀) are so eye-catching because they have a hidden layer (层) of black or white beneath their bright feathers (羽毛). Painters often prepare paper with a layer of white to enhance the colors they will eventually layer on. But it seems this is a mechanism that birds were using long before humans picked up paintbrushes. Rosalyn Price-Waldman at Princeton University and her co-workers have found that when songbirds have bright red or yellow feather, they usually have white layers hidden underneath. When they have blue feather, they have black layers beneath. To investigate why, they removed 72 feathers from tanager samples in a collection at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Through the systematic acquisition of photographic data illustrating the feathers against different backgrounds, the team measured how their reflectance or absorption of light changed, finding that the underlayers make the top layers look more colorful. The red and yellow coloration is created by pigments (色素), which selectively absorb light to make color. This means the extra light from the white below makes them brighter, says Price-Waldman. But blue color comes from tiny structures inside the feathers that reflect light in specific directions, rather than absorbing light to create the color we see. Because of this, the light-absorbing black below makes the blue look brighter. “If you have white underneath them, they look a white-grey color,” says Price-Waldman. Price-Waldman and her co-workers found that, in some cases, these layers of feathers generate sexual color differences in tanagers. They also found that this color-boosting strategy is seen in many other songbirds. “While a lot of research has already been done to understand how birds produce such striking colors there is clearly a lot left to discover,” says Chris Cooney at the University of Sheffield, UK. 12. How did the researchers check how much light the feathers reflected or absorbed? A. By observing feathers in natural habitats. B. By comparing feathers of different species. C. By conducting chemical experiments on the feathers. D. By taking pictures of the feathers on different backgrounds. 13. Why do black underlayers contribute to making blue feathers look brighter? A. They help absorb extra light. B. They contain special pigments. C. They reflect light in specific ways. D. They increase feather thickness. 14. What can we infer about tanagers from the fifth paragraph? A. Tanagers use the color-boosting strategy best. B. feather layers help tanagers attract mates easily. C. Tanagers have more colorful feathers than other songbirds. D. Male and female tanagers may have different feather colors. 15. What is Chris Cooney’s attitude toward current research on bird coloration? A. He believes the topic has been fully explored. B. He doubts the value of continuing such research. C. He feels future studies will reveal more mechanisms. D. He is satisfied with the current level of understanding. Travel is enriching yet environmentally costly—plastics are a key contributor. After a lovely dinner date with my husband, we drove home as midnight approached. On our way home, I had been expecting my naughty son, Jack, hadn’t messed up our home. After all, tidying up the house in the middle of the night was a pretty annoying task. As we unlocked the door quietly, Jack turned on the lights dramatically and shouted: “Ta-daaa!” He gestured grandly toward the kitchen table, where a slightly off-balance chocolate cake awaited our inspection. But I never made it all the way to the table. I glanced past him, and felt down instantly. The kitchen was in complete chaos: cocoa powder spotted the refrigerator door, a spoon lay forgotten in the box, and milk spread on the floor. Mixing bowls were caked with sticky butter, and flour dusted the counter like snow. “How many times have I told you not to make a mess?” I shouted angrily, “The whole kitchen is a disaster. I can’t bear to look at it!” Jack’s smile faded, and his shoulders slumped “Mom, I just wanted to ...” he tried to explain, but I cut him off sharply. “Save it. You’ll clean every bit of this up first thing tomorrow,” I said coldly, storming up the stairs and shutting the bedroom door with all my strength, leaving my husband and son frozen there. I threw myself onto the bed. The image of the messy kitchen kept replaying in my mind — knocked over milk flour everywhere. I muttered (小声嘀咕) to myself, “That boy never listens. Why can’t he just keep things tidy for once?” I pulled the quilt over my head, trying to block out the frustration, but my mind wandered to how many times I’d cleaned up after Jack’s mischief (调皮捣蛋), and I felt myself getting angrier and angrier. “Should I help him clean up again this time?” I thought. Just then, my husband came in. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Looking at tearful Jack, I walked over and hugged him tightly. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2026届高三年级联合调研测评 英语 本试卷共8页,满分150分,考试用时120分钟。 How much is the shirt? A. Interest is the best teacher. B. Traveling can make people famous. C. Social media is essential for traveling. D. Age is not a barrier to pursuing one’s dreams. 4. B 5. C 6. A 7. Finally, when presenting these images to another group, they could distinguish between music-inspired and silent-imagined content, but only when exposed to the same music. The Development of Different Music in Europe 【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. 根据第二段中“To explore further, we conducted experiments using a scene from the video game Journey, asking participants to imagine the journey’s continuation. They rated their imagination’s vividness, distance, and time traveled, with music generally enhancing these aspects compared to silence.(为了进一步探索,我们使用电子游戏《风之旅人》中的一个场景进行了实验,要求参与者想象旅程的延续。他们评估了想象的生动性、距离感和时间跨度,结果发现音乐通常比静默更能增强这些方面)”可知,研究者使用游戏场景是为了创造一个引导参与者想象的特定情境,以便在后续实验中对比音乐与静默环境下,参与者想象力的各项指标(如生动性等)是否存在差异,从而探究音乐对想象力的影响。故选A项。 根据第三段中“Music not only shapes the vividness of participants’ imagination but also the content of their imaginations. Complex stories emerge, often sharing similarities among those from the same cultural background.(音乐不仅塑造参与者想象的生动性,也塑造了他们想象的内容。复杂的故事会出现,并且通常来自同一文化背景的人会拥有相似的想象)”可知,来自同一文化背景的人会拥有相似的想象,所以文化背景会影响人们对音乐的理解和想象。故选D项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“To visualize these imagined journeys, we employed a generative AI system, Stable Diffusion, changing text descriptions into images. The results, supported by human-conducted analyses, showed three times more social interactions in music-inspired journeys.(为了将这些想象中的旅程可视化,我们运用了生成式人工智能系统Stable Diffusion,将文字描述转化为图像。在人工分析的支持下,结果显示,由音乐启发的旅程中所描绘的社会互动场景,数量达到了其他类型的三倍之多)”可知,使用Stable Diffusion的主要目的是将参与者想象的旅程(以文字形式描述)转化为可视化的图像,以便进行后续的分析。故选D项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。文章开篇“Can music truly be good company?(音乐是否真的是良好的伴侣?)” C项“Music: Good Company for the Imagination(音乐:想象力的良好陪伴)”准确地概括了全文主旨,适合作文章标题。故选C项。 D Brightly colored songbirds called tanagers (唐纳雀) are so eye-catching because they have a hidden layer (层) of black or white beneath their bright feathers (羽毛). “While a lot of research has already been done to understand how birds produce such striking colors, there is clearly a lot left to discover,” says Chris Cooney at the University of Sheffield, UK. 12. D 13. A 14. D 15. The image of the messy kitchen kept replaying in my mind — knocked over milk, flour everywhere. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 Just then, my husband came in. He sat behind me gently, voice soft: “Jack spent the whole afternoon making that cake for our anniversary. It was his surprise for us.” As I listened, I pictured an 8-year-old boy making a cake in the kitchen. I was moved to tears, and at the same time, I felt regretful for being so hard on him just now. I turned to my husband, and he seemed to have understood me. He gently pulled me up and walked downstairs with me. Looking at tearful Jack, I walked over and hugged him tightly. “I’m so sorry, baby,” I whispered, tapping his back. Jack buried his face in my shoulder, crying. I kissed his forehead and said, “It’s the sweetest gift ever.” Once he settled down, we entered the kitchen. The mess there didn’t catch my attention. Instead, the off-balance chocolate cake did. “Happy 10th anniversary” Jack said joyfully. That night left me a deep impression not only due to the cake full of love but also due to the lesson I learned: Behind a child’s imperfection, there may lie a precious intention. Parents need to treasure their children’s every little gesture. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①想象:picture/imagine ②小声说:whisper/murmur ③珍惜:treasure/cherish 情绪类 ①感动:moved/touched ②高兴地:joyfully/merrily 【点睛】【高分句型1】As I listened, I pictured an 8-year-old boy making a cake in the kitchen.(运用了从属连词as引导时间状语从句) 【高分句型2】Jack buried his face in my shoulder, crying.(运用了现在分词crying作伴随状语) 【高分句型3】Once he settled down, we entered the kitchen.(运用了从属连词once引导时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
