At my primary school, I was one of the smartest kids there. I never studied, but always got perfect scores. I was also a prodigy in music according to myself. When I arrived at my new class, I couldn’t wait to show everyone what I could do. However, there was always someone else who could do them better. My grades began to suffer. More talented girls often sang solo. I believed I wasn’t smart. I believed I wasn’t talented. I believed I was a failure.
Over the next two years, I had to work very hard. Every prize for the singing competition was given to me for hard work and effort. Grades were still very low but improving little by little. I worked really hard. However, I was never the best at everything.
I haven’t realized until recently that I really don’t have to be the best at everything. I was too hard on myself. In fact, when I did badly in a test, my classmates never laughed at me.

Mr. Roberts divided our class into groups to make speeches. It was my turn. However, my hands shook so badly that I couldn’t read my notes. My voice became lower and lower. Mr. Roberts had to end my speech, even though I clearly didn’t finish.
“I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project,” Mr. Roberts said. “If I give you another chance tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” I nodded.
After arriving home, I told Mom what happened at school. Mom was silent for a moment and then said, “Let me show you something.” In the bedroom, Mom showed me a book filled with pictures. In it, there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young.
“I won it for public speaking. When I started in the speech team, I was shy, but I ended the year as the winner. It wasn’t easy at first—I wasn’t sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”
Mom tied the blue ribbon onto my wrist (手). I imagined the scene (场面) where Mom tried her best to overcome (克服) her fears and pick up her courage to make a wonderful speech. I looked at it and decided to find my courage. In front of the mirror. I kept practicing from pronunciation to tones, even gestures, “Try harder,” I cheered myself up when I felt tired
The next day, I walked to the front of the classroom to give my speech again. Suddenly, courage found its way back the moment I noticed the blue ribbon. I took a deep breath and started my speech, “Dear classmates...” I found Mr. Roberts standing in the corner smiling at me and I smiled back. The whole class cheered for me. How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial about 3500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动), and it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries, it was developed. For example, springs (发条) were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz clock was developed. It was also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run businesses, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, the digital clock came. And nowadays satellites (卫星) send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work.
46.According to the passage, we can’t use a ________ to tell the time on a rainy day.
A.water clock B.sun clock C.digital clock D.mechanical clock
47.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “ordinary” in the third paragraph?
A.现代的 B.特殊的 C.普通的 D.异常的
48.How many kinds of clocks are mentioned in the passage?
A.Four. B.Six. C.Seven. D.Nine.
49.Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
50.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The importance of time. B.The development of timekeeping.
C.The inventions of clocks. D.The kinds of clocks.

Well, I thought i'd choose a language that is not too different from english, so I decided to try italian. Isn't IT difficult to keep going with IT? Yes, IT is. I have to be very strict with myself.
