Built in 1929, Bizzell Memorial Library, a National Historic Land mark that sits at the heart of The University of Oklahoma, features unique Cherokee Gothic architecture influenced by the Native American style.

Three years ago, Nikki Robinson came across a little raccoon (浣熊) by the roadside and rescued it. She tried repeatedly to take it to wildlife centers, but was disheartened by the lack of available support. Eventually, her mother Linda, who had prior experience in raising raccoons, was persuaded to take the little animal in.
They named him Little Hands and fell in love with the trash panda. Linda and Nikki fed him, raised him, and eventually let him go. To their surprise, Little Hands kept coming back, sometimes after a few days, sometimes a few months. He would come back and ask for hugs, food, and just love.
Little Hands was taken care of by Linda. He was allowed to come and go as he pleased. He was very fearful of any human or animal that he didn’t grow up with, but would come back to visit them most nights. Linda would leave food out for him every night and sit outside on the porch swing before bed, waiting for his visit. The first thing he would do is that he would climb over to Linda on the swing, sit beside her, and want pats from her.
“Little Hands stayed with us for about two and a half months before he fully returned to the wild. He has always been a calm, peaceful raccoon, very loving and caring, even as he matured. But still wild enough he lives successfully on his own,” Nikki said.
People asked Nikki what their reaction was when Little Hands returned to them. “Pure joy. And every time he came back it was a more and more joyous occasion especially because he wanted our attention as well as our food.”
At last, Nikki said: “Be kind. We share the planet with so many creatures that need to be respected. They are capable of complex social systems and emotions.”

B. She had much experience in raising raccoons.
C. She had trouble finding a proper help elsewhere.
D. She wanted to keep it as a pet from the beginning.
5. Why would Little Hands return after being set free?
A. Because he could get some food and love.
B. Because he wanted to show his thanks to them.
C. Because he was afraid of living in the wild alone.
D. Because he liked playing on the swing with Linda.
6. Which of the following expressions best describes Nikki and her mother?
A. Devoted and considerate.
B. Kind and generous.
C. Sympathetic and curious.
D. Warmhearted and caring.
7. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Creatures should be valued for their emotions.
B. People must share what they have with animals.
C. People should be in harmony with other creatures.
D. Many creatures are good at socializing with people.

When you’re grabbing lunch you might have your phone resting on the table. And when you go to the bathroom you might leave it on top of the toilet paper holder. Then, at the end of the day when you take the train or bus home, you exchange it from hand to hand as you pilot public transportation while still staying on top of all your notifications.
Let’s face it: Your phone is a breeding (哺育) ground for germs (细菌). And what is especially unhealthy about it is how close you put it to your face and mouth on a regular basis. Scientists at the University of Arizona found that your phone is ten times dirtier than most toilet seats. Wow, unbelievable! Another study also found that a typical high schooler’s smartphone can have as many as 17,000 bacterial gene copies on it. Think about that the next time you press your phone up against your face to make a phone call. Your phone is exposed to everything you touch. What’s on your hands is on your phone. Health-care experts stress that washing your hands frequently with soap and water is the best defense against the spread of germs.
Everyone always remembers to wash their hands many a time a day, but many times ignore their phone screen. The reason why your phone holds so many germs is that it remains warm throughout the day because of how often we use it. The warm environment allows germ to grow very easily and puts you at a greater risk of getting infected.
The germs on our phones can also lead to the development of acne (粉刺) and blackheads on your face. When your phone is pressed against your face while you’re on a call, the surface of our skin warms up, opening up our pore (毛孔). The germs then gets into your pores, causing skin irritation. Meanwhile, there are some other germs spreading items you’re probably carrying right now.
12. What’s the writing purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To stress the cellphone is of much importance.
B. To suggest our cellphone is full of germs.
C. To show the toilet is not the most dirty.
D. To indicate we have a close connection with the cellphone.
13. What does the author think of the result found by the scientists?
A. Personally astonishing. B. Statistically doubtful.
C. Scientifically supportive. D. Psychologically frightening.
14. What is the best way to protect ourselves from germs according to experts?
A. Often do hand-washing. B. Cool your phone on a regular basis.
C. Frequently clean your phone screen. D. Avoid pressing your phone against your face.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. How the germs enter your pore. B. How the germs influence your facial skin.
C. What warms up your face. D. What causes your acne and blackheads.

If you are constantly lack of confidence and worried about what other people think about your shortcomings you will never get to where you need to go in life. This was what I learned from my own experience.
My name is Peter. Before I was born, the doctors examined my mom and found there was something wrong with my face, and actually it was worse. With my “weird” face, I knew I was not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I had never been to a real school before, not because of the way I looked, but all the surgeries I had. Mom homeschooled me. I became stronger, though. So maybe it was time for me to go to the real school.
One day, I happened to hear Mom and Dad talking about me quietly. “We can’t keep protecting him.” Mom whispered to Dad, “We have to help him learn to deal with it. We can’t just keep avoiding situations that… ”, but she didn’t even finish her sentence because she saw me. “Go back to sleep, Peter,” Mom said softly.
“Everyone will stare at me at school,” I said, suddenly crying.
Mom came over, putting her hand on mine. “Honey, you know if you don’t want to do this, you don’t have to. But we spoke to the principal (校长) , Mr. Green and told him how funny and smart you are. When I told him about all your surgeries, and how brave you are, ‘Wow, I have to meet this kid.’ ” Mom smiled at me.
“He is really a nice man. Besides, a real school is really good for you. Peter, you will make lots of friends and learn things you have never learned with Mom.” Dad added, raising his hand as if to swear.
“But… I don’t want to go. I am afraid... ” I said in a low voice.
“How about at least meeting Mr. Green before you make up your mind?” Mom asked.
I nodded, unwilling to accept the arrangement.

【答案】Dear Mike,
I’m overjoyed that you’ll visit China in the winter vacation. I’d like to offer some suggestions to make your trip memorable.
Before your trip, you can consider booking a package tour through a travel agency for convenience. If you plan an independent trip, you need to make proper arrangements for your travel, including transportation and accommodation. As to the destination, I highly recommend visiting Beijing or Xi’an, where you can admire the magnificent architecture and long history.
I truly look forward to your arrival and believe you’ll be amazed by the charm of China.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Paragraph 1:
We arrived at the school a few weeks before the start of the school. I admitted that I was so nervous that the butterflies in my stomach were more like pigeons flying around my insides before I saw Mr. Green, who was waiting for us at the entrance. After shaking hands with us, he proposed that we take a tour in the school first. Mr. Green patiently introduced the science lab, the art room, the modern classroom and the lunchroom, which were really attractive. After that, we went to his office. Mr. Green stared into my eyes as if seeing my innerself locked away inside. He knelt down in front of me, patted me on the shoulder and said softly, “Peter, I know you are a smart and brave boy. Don’t let your inner fear defeat you. Face it bravely! ”
Paragraph 2:
After taking a tour of the school and hearing Mr. Green’s words, I realized it was time to make a change. I made up my mind to throw off my fear and shortcomings and learn more interesting things in the new school. After seconds of silence, I nodded my head confidently, saying “Mr. Green, I want to, no, I am determined to study in this school. I will try my best to adapt to the life here.” Looking at me with a big and bright smile on face, Mr. Green said “I do believe in you!” Hearing what I said, my mom also couldn’t hold back her tears of joy, hugging me delightedly. It finally dawned on me that only when I have confidence in myself can I conquer the fear. Remember to hold your head up.
