A 100-year-old shoe store in Iowa, America, is proving that there is a way to run a business in a small town even if you don’t use the Internet.
Weaver’s Leather Store has been open since 1925 and is still going strong. Their secret is just doing a good job for their customers. They always take time to listen to each customer’s needs and make sure they leave with the perfect fit. “We have shoes in every state,” Tim Weaver said. He is the third generation of Weavers who have made the shoe store their life’s dream.
“We never had a website—just word of mouth and people coming in,” said Tim. The way the store runs has changed little from how Tim’s father, LeRoy Weaver, ran it since he took over the business from his own father, which sets it apart from other stores. The machines the family uses are from many years ago. One of them was probably built in the 1930s.
Another thing that has given them an advantage is the stacked storage (堆叠式存储) of shoes. They probably have about 13,000 pairs of shoes. A salesman once told Tim, “You can never sell an empty shelf.” Therefore, they always make sure to keep the shelves full.
The future of the store looks bright as the next generation prepares to step in. Colin Weaver, 26, and his brother Tanner, 29, plan to someday take over the store. Colin shared his journey, saying that while he was considering his choices during college, he finally realized, “Nothing else could bring me the same joy and purpose that the store does.”
The family knows just how lucky they have been. In an age where technology and the Internet can make or break a company, this small shop has left a big footprint with not so much as an online ad. “Not too many people can say that. It’s an honor,” Tim said. “That’s what we’re here for—to keep the business going through generations.”
4. What is the key to Weaver’s Leather Store’s success?
A. Good online marketing. B. Excellent customer service.
C A well-known salesman. D. A high-tech production line.
5. What is special about the store?
A. It depends on different machines.
B. It often changes its website design.
C. It offers skill development programs.
D. It sticks to a time-tested business model.
6. What does Colin’s realization during college mainly show?
A. His respect for shoemakers. B. His enjoyment of college life.
C. His love for the family business. D. His pressure from family expectations.
7. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. The Next Generation Take over Family Business
B. Century-old shoe Shop survive in Digital Age
C The Future of an Old-Fashioned shoe Shop
D. Technology matters to Business Success
C
Motivation enables you to meet your basic needs as well as complete your life goals. You may hear of extrinsic motivation a lot. But do you know you also have a hidden motivator called intrinsic motivation (内驱力)?
They are both very important, yet also different. Extrinsic motivation is driven by rewards, be it achieving high marks, earning lots of money, or becoming popular. Intrinsic motivation is all about enjoyment. For example, an intrinsic runner will run simply because he loves it. He is not training for a competition or trying to improve his records; he is running because he feels running is a part of him and enjoys it.
Although it has no rewards, intrinsic motivation does bring positive change and can lead to better performance. Researchers found that middle school students who were intrinsically motivated were calmer and more positive. So when you find these students are also those who raise their hands most, please don’t feel strange. They like to communicate with their teachers.
In fact, intrinsic motivation can be a more powerful motivator than extrinsic motivation. For example, if you are always measuring your success, you may live in dissatisfaction all the time. This is like being on “a hedonic treadmill (跑步机)”, where people are forced to buy the latest product. After buying it, buyers may feel empty and dissatisfied, and start hunting for another product to fill the empty hole in their heart. Likewise, after setting the next extrinsic goal, it is common to feel inspired.
So intrinsic motivation is becoming an important tool for parents and educators. It is about being in the moment and enjoying life each step of the way. Therefore, instead of asking your kids to set the next goal, you should help them stay in the present and enjoy the moment. They should look inside to uncover what inspires them and do it for the act itself. If they love nature, they can just walk in a forest without tracking the distance or time.
8. Which of the following is driven by intrinsic motivation?
A. Work for a pay rise. B. Study for a top college.
C. Exercise as a hobby. D. Train for an Olympic medal.
9. How does a teenage boy with intrinsic motivation perform at school?
A. He feels upset when failing the exam. B. He interacts with teachers actively.
C. He finds other students strange. D. He competes mainly for high marks.
10. Why does the author mention “a hedonic treadmill” in Paragraph 4?
A. To show the importance of new products.
B. To prove the benefits of extrinsic motivation.
C. To tell the possible problem of extrinsic motivation.
D. To highlight intrinsic motivation’s long-term effects.
11. What should parents do to develop their kids’ intrinsic motivation?
A. Push kids to track progress. B. Ask kids to set changeable goals.
C. Guide kids to look within themselves. D. Encourage kids to seek external rewards.
D
One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as the “last paradise (天堂) on earth”.
However, the size and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the resulting destruction of precious trees and plants.
The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited (利用). No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact get financial (金钱的) support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its future and that of the countries we all want to visit. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can protect the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
12. What does the underlined sentence of Paragraph 1 imply about ever-growing tourism?
A. Its technical challenge. B. Its possible problems.
C. Its positive social effects. D. Its undervalued rewards.
13. Why does the author mention “Nepal” in Paragraph 2?
A. To support an argument. B. To make comparison.
C. To show cause and effect. D. To group related ideas.
14. What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text?
A. They get work-life balance. B. Their health is destroyed.
C. They lose some freedom. D. Their social skill is improved.
15 What may determine the future of tourism?
A. Overseas market. B. Cultural exchanges.
C. Effective management. D. Tourist numbers.
Kids’ health: four steps for fighting stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. ____16____ Some ways of dealing with stress—like screaming or hitting someone—don’t solve much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
●Get support
When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives. ____17____ They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
●____18____
Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they direct their stress inward. Oh, dear, that’s not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. You don’t have to face difficult times all by yourself. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
●Try to solve the problem
After you are calm and you have support from adults and friends, it’s time to get down to business. You need to figure out what the problem is. ____19____
●Be positive
Most stress is temporary (暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.
These steps aren’t magic. But they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you’ll help yourself feel better even faster. ____20____
A. Don’t take it out on yourself.
B. Then, find a way to calm down.
C. And don’t forget about your friends.
D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
E. Different people feel stress in different ways.
F. Even if you can’t solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.
G. Notice your friends’ feelings and find a way to help them.

I’m getting married next year!(嘿,朋友们,你们猜怎么着?我明年就要结婚啦!)”可知,本段对话主要介绍的是有关于Jenny的消息。A选项“Jenny’s big news.(Jenny的重大消息。)” 故选A。
根据Linda所说的内容“Jenny was telling us about her big news. It’s very important to her. And you want us to hear about your new job now?(Jenny刚刚跟我们讲了她的重要消息,这对她来说意义重大。而你现在却想让我们听听你的新工作情况?)”可知,本来Jenny跟大家分享了自己重大消息,但是Mark却提到了自己新工作的情况,所以此处表示Mark“抢了风头”。D选项“Mark is sharing his travel but Jenny keeps talking about her new iPhone.(Mark正在讲述他的旅行经历,而Jenny却一直在谈论她新买的苹果手机。)”
根据Mark所说的内容“All right, all right, my problem. Sorry, Jenny. I’ll never do that again. So do you want to know what job I got?(好吧,好吧,是我的问题。对不起,Jenny。我再也不会那样做了。那你想知道我得到了什么样的工作吗?)”可知,Mark仍旧继续提到自己的工作,依旧抢占话题,由此推断Linda对此感到没有耐心,不想听Mark的话。故选A。

C. A well-known salesman.
C. The Future of an Old-Fashioned shoe Shop
D. Technology matters to Business Success

C 9. B 10. C 11. C

根据第二段“Intrinsic motivation is all about enjoyment. For example, an intrinsic runner will run simply because he loves it. He is not training for a competition or trying to improve his records; he is running because he feels running is a part of him and enjoys it.(内在动机完全是关于享受的。例如,一个内在动机驱动的跑步者跑步仅仅是因为他喜欢跑步。他不是为了比赛而训练,也不是为了改善自己的记录;他跑步是因为他觉得跑步是他的一部分,他喜欢跑步。)”可知,把锻炼当作爱好是由内在动机驱动的。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Researchers found that middle school students who were intrinsically motivated were calmer and more positive. So when you find these students are also those who raise their hands most, please don’t feel strange. They like to communicate with their teachers.(研究人员发现,内在动机驱动的中学生更冷静、更积极。所以当你发现这些学生也是举手最多的学生时,请不要感到奇怪。他们喜欢与老师交流。)”可知,一个有内在动机的十几岁男孩在学校积极地与老师互动。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“For example, if you are always measuring your success, you may live in dissatisfaction all the time. This is like being on “a hedonic treadmill”, where people are forced to buy the latest product. After buying it, buyers may feel empty and dissatisfied, and start hunting for another product to fill the empty hole in their heart. Likewise, after setting the next extrinsic goal, it is common to feel inspired.(例如,如果你总是衡量自己的成功,你可能会一直生活在不满中。这就像是在“享乐跑步机”上,人们被迫购买最新的产品。购买后,买家可能会感到空虚和不满,并开始寻找另一个产品来填补他们心中的空虚。同样,在设定下一个外在目标后,人们通常会感到受到激励。)”可知,作者在第四段提到“享乐跑步机”是为了说明外在动机可能存在的问题。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Therefore, instead of asking your kids to set the next goal, you should help them stay in the present and enjoy the moment. They should look inside to uncover what inspires them and do it for the act itself.(因此,与其要求你的孩子设定下一个目标,不如帮助他们活在当下,享受这一刻。他们应该审视自己的内心,找出激发他们灵感的东西,并为了行为本身而去做。)”可知,父母应该引导孩子审视自己的内心来培养孩子的内在动机。故选C项。
15. What may determine the future of tourism?
A. Overseas market. B. Cultural exchanges.
C. Effective management. D. Tourist numbers.

第一段中提到“One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as the “last paradise (天堂) on earth’. (人们可能会认为,旅游业的不断增长的需求只会给接待度假者的国家带来好处。的确,假日产业的长期未来被描绘成一幅美好的画面。每个月都有新酒店在某处建成。每个月都有另一个被岩石环绕的太平洋岛屿被宣传为“地球上最后的天堂” )”指出人们的普遍观点:旅游业的不断增长的需求只会给接待度假者的国家带来好处,而下文第二段中紧接着用“However (然而)”转折,指出“the size and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal.(这种增长的规模和速度似乎注定要破坏游客想要享受的东西。过度拥挤的海滩和无尽的酒店混凝土丛林已经开始失去吸引力)”指出旅游业的增长可能会导致各种问题。故第一段中带下划线的句子暗示了旅游业不断增长可能存在的问题。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。第二段开头指出“However, the size and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy.(然而,这种增长的规模和速度似乎注定要破坏游客想要享受的东西)”,然后该段中“Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the resulting destruction of precious trees and plants.(那些缺乏旅游经验的国家在急于快速赚钱的过程中可能会遭受最大的损失。近年来,尼泊尔的森林,充满了野生动物和稀有花卉,被作为又一个未受破坏的天堂提供给游客,结果珍贵的树木和植物遭到了破坏)”可知,作者提到尼泊尔是为了支持前面关于旅游业增长可能带来破坏这一观点,即此处提出尼泊尔是为了支持论点。故选A。
根据第三段“The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master.( 人们也很快感受到了这种变化带来的影响。农田被改建成酒店、道路和机场;原有的生活方式也随之消失。曾经的农民如今成了某个跨国组织的雇员,不再拥有自己的生活主宰权。)”可知,旅游业对农民的主要影响是他们失去了一些自由,不再是自己土地的主人。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can protect the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.(在规划全球旅游业方面增进理解可以保护这些公司的市场。如果不这样做,几年后,现在吸引游客的东西很可能已经被破坏)”可知,在规划全球旅游业方面增进理解可以保护这些公司的市场,即有效的管理将决定旅游业的未来。故选C。
