Did you know that vocabulary (词汇) is more important than grammar? If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if the grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don’t have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition (释义). You should write the word, the definition in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”. Write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adjective), definition—giving or willing to give freely. Example One, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner. You’re very generous. Example Two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It helps you to remember it. These two simple steps: writing the word and using it at once, help you remember and use new words.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook? If not, start now.
4. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The problem. B. The new word. C. The conversation. D. The dictionary.
5. What’s the best way to learn a new word according to the passage?

6. How can we make the best example sentences according to the writer?
A By asking for help from friends. B. By explaining words’ definitions.
C. By connecting them with our life. D. By adding words from the article.
7. What’s the best title for the passage?

On the evening of August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral (博士学位) student from Tsinghua University, was named a “Touching China” 2024 Awardee (获奖者). His story—from a young man who beat great hardships to an inspiring (鼓舞人心的) person—has warmed and encouraged many people.
Pang was born into a poor family and faced big difficulties. His father has a mental illness, and his mother was born with a disease and had her legs cut off, so she can hardly move. Pang himself had a heart problem from birth. To help his family, he went to many houses to borrow money for his mother’s treatment and picked up old things to pay the family’s debts (债务). But he stayed happy and believed, “Knowledge changes life.” So when in school, Pang studied very hard. Every day, he walked a long way to go to school. Even if he only had a small light, he still studied late at night. He always became one of the top students in his class.
In 2017, Pang took the gaokao. He got an amazing score of 684 points! He was successful in being accepted into Tsinghua University. At the University, he chose to learn engineering. He continued to work hard and studied diligently (勤勉地) as always. Sadly, his mother died in 2020. That was just before he got the chance to study for a doctorate at Tsinghua. His mother named him “Zhongwang,” which means “the hope of all.” She told him to always look forward. “Mom smiles every day—why should I feel sad?” Actually, he did very well in his studies and later became a PhD (哲学博士) student. He took part in important research projects and even invented new technologies. Now, he has three national patents (专利) for his inventions, and his work is helpful in areas like environmental monitoring and disaster warning systems.
Pang never forgot where he came from. After he succeeded, he used his success to help others. He donated money to help poor children go to school, and he also supported health funds (基金) for kids who have heart diseases. Besides, he became a tourism ambassador (旅游大使) for his hometown because he wanted to help promote (促进) the local culture and economy (经济).
As the award speech says: “You leave hardships behind, face life with a smile, and move forward with strength.” Pang’s life tells us that if we are strong and have hope, we can all live up to expectations and create our own brilliance (辉煌).

As you can see, China’s first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’e.
A. Reading the definition. B. Reciting example sentences.
C. Learning its pronunciation. D. Writing the word and using it at once.
6. How can we make the best example sentences according to the writer?
A. By asking for help from friends. B. By explaining words’ definitions.
C. By connecting them with our life. D. By adding words from the article.
7. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Tips for Translating Words. B. Advice on Using Grammar.
C Abilities of Creating Examples. D. Ways of Learning New Words.

On the evening of August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral (博士学位的) student from Tsinghua University, was named a “Touching China” 2024 Awardee (获奖者).
8. Why did Pang Zhongwang go to many houses to borrow money?
A. To pay for his own school fees.
B. To buy old things for his family.

A. To make more money for himself.
B. To help spread the local culture and develop the local economy.
C. To escape from his research work.

B. Pang Zhongwang studied environmental science at Tsinghua University.
C. Pang Zhongwang has two patents for his inventions.

①So far, China has successfully sent a large number of satellites (卫星) and spaceships into space. Space scientists have been greatly inspired (赋予灵感) by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names.
②Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Chang’e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China’s first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’e. More interestingly, people named the moon rover (巡视器) after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of Chang’e in the story. These old stories carry people’s best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true.
③Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much ancient Chinese people wanted to know about the unknown world. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to “visit” the sun, because we have a space project called Kuafu Mission.
④Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time. So, China’s first quantum (量子) science satellite was named Mozi, making China the first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between satellites and the ground.
