Sonja Redding and her family were on their way home to Omaha, Nebraska, after a weeklong visit to Washington, D. C. with her two sons, one of whom, 5-year-old Xayvior, has autism(自闭症).
Although all of the other flights had gone fine, Xayvior became angry during one of the flights, and Redding couldn’t calm him.
“It felt like everyone on the plane was looking at us and got angry with my son, ” she wrote in a Facebook post after she got home. “I don’t know what to do when others just don’t understand that he is not just a kid with no discipline(自制力),but a child with special needs who doesn’t know how to control himself.”
The day was saved by Delta flight attendant(空乘人员)Amanda Amburgy. She tried to help Xayvior watch a movie, but when that failed, she offered to take him on a tour of the airplane. That worked, and soon the child was not only calm, but having a good time.
“When they came back, Xayvior was much calmer and happier,” wrote Redding in the post, which now has 2,700 likes and over 500 shares. “I want to thank this Delta attendant. She didn’t judge, and she just showed love. We need more people like this in the world. ”
It wasn’t long before Amburgy was told about the post.“ We’re there to help, and that’s what we want to do,” she said in an interview. “So, we always want to make anything easier for the family as well as other passengers.”
She also shared what she felt when she read Redding’s story. “When I read it, it touched my heart. It’s something I would do for anyone on the plane, because that’s what I’m here for. It really made a difference in her life.”

7. Which of the following words can best describe Amburgy?
A. Proud. B. Honest.

If it seems like all your friends have smartphones, you may be on to something. A new report by Common Sense Media, which reports on technology and media for children, found that by the age of 11, more than half of kids in the US have their own smartphone. By age 12, more than two-thirds do, and by 14, teens are just as likely as adults to own a smartphone. Some kids start much younger. Nearly 20% of 8-year-olds have their own smartphone!
Well, I study the effects of media and technology on kids, and I’m here to say that there is no single right answer to this question. The best I can offer is this: When both you and your parents feel the time is right.
Here are some points to consider to help you and your parents make this decision.
Be responsible. Have you shown that you are generally responsible? Do you understand the value of money, and can you save up to buy things you want?
Keep safe. Do you travel to or from school or after-school activities without an adult? This is when phones often go from a “want” to a “need”. Sometimes parents report that they feel better knowing they can reach their children directly, and that their kids can reach them, too.
Be careful. Do you treat your friends with kindness and respect? Do you know the fact that once something goes out onto the web, it can never truly be deleted (删除)?
When you have a smartphone, your parents are the No. I most important influence in your life. If parents use their phones all day, guess what? Their children probably will be like that, too. However, if parents have smartphone habits like putting the phone away during meals, that will go a long way toward helping kids develop the same habits.
8. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The benefit of the phone. B. The need for the phone.
C. The right age for the use of the phone. D. The way of using the phone?
9. A phone goes from a “want” to “a need” when children use it to ______
A. keep in touch with their parents B. get some information online
C. chat with their friends online D. send messages to their friends
10. What should parents do according to the last paragraph?
A. Teach their children to use phones. B. Use their phones as little as possible.
C. Control their children’s using phones. D. Set a good example for their children.
11. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. The advantages of having a phone B. How children use their phones
C. How old children should be to get phones D. The problems with children’s having phones
D
Teenagers’ fitness is now an important concern, and physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers. First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.
Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. “Overweight” means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. “Active” refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.
According to Dr. Lopez, overweight teenagers should work out to keep healthy. Ride a bike, play badminton or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories (卡路里). Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching (拉伸) exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, staring with twenty of each a day. “Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” Dr. Lopez said. The same rule applies to active teenagers.
Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive (高强度) exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities. “These activities are really important in order to stop injuries,” Dr. Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be organized in the programme in order to increase the person’s strength.
12. What should teenagers find out first according to Dr. Helen Lopez?
A. Their present level of fitness.
B. Their past level of fitness.
C. Their present level of stress.
D. Their present level of body weight.
13. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Active people always have a high fitness level.
B. Overweight people always take more exercise.
C. Keeping fit means changing teenagers’ lifestyle.
D. Inactive teenagers are not seriously overweight.
14. What can you do to stop injuries?
A. Do some walking. B. Do some jogging.
C. Do some stretching and bending. D. Do some weight-training.
15 What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Doing Exercise B. Teenagers’ Fitness
C. Different Lifestyles D. Overweight teenagers

C. Control their children’s using phones. D. Set a good example for their children.

15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Doing Exercise B. Teenagers’ Fitness
C. Different Lifestyles D. Overweight teenagers
