The ground shook suddenly. Houses moved, and people ran into the streets with scare. With people running around, Zhang Heng stood still, thinking quickly. “There must be a way to know when this will happen,” he thought. He had seen many earthquakes (地震) in his life, and each time, people couldn’t do anything. But this time, Zhang Heng decided to find a method.
For days, he could think of nothing else but the earthquake. He was a man who loved science and understood the power of nature. After studying the stars, the sky, and the earth for years, Zhang Heng had an idea—what if there was a machine that could feel earthquakes before they happened?
Without wasting any time, Zhang Heng began to work on his invention. He used bronze (青铜) to create a large container with eight dragon heads, each holding a small ball in its mouth. At the bottom of each dragon, he placed a frog. If an earthquake happened, the shaking would cause the ball to fall into the frog’s mouth, showing the direction of the earthquake.
Months of hard work passed, and one night, Zhang Heng was ready to test his invention. Suddenly, the ground shook again. His heart raced as he rushed to the machine. To his surprise, one of the dragon heads dropped its ball! The ball fell into the frog’s mouth, pointing west. Zhang Heng smiled with excitement. It worked!
A few days later, a strong earthquake hit the west, just as the Seismoscope (地动仪) had shown. People were amazed, and Zhang Heng’s invention saved many lives by giving them a warning before the disaster.
Though his name became famous, Zhang Heng never stopped searching for answers. He knew that science was a never-ending journey, and he was always ready for the next challenge.
26.What was Zhang Heng trying to do in the story?
A.To build some machines to help people with everyday tasks.
B.To create a container for telling the weather ahead of time.
C.To become famous for his scientific work and inventions.
D.To find a way to warn about earthquakes ahead of time.

B.The shaking from an earthquake made balls fall into frogs’ mouths.
C.It showed the temperature change before an earthquake happened.
D.The machine could tell exactly when an earthquake was happening.
28.What was the Seismoscope’s test like?
A.The Seismoscope did not work at all and failed.
B.The machine showed the earthquake’s direction.
C.The frog opened its mouth and shouted loudly.
D.The invention was damaged during the test.
29.Which of the following best describes Zhang Heng?

Hobbies are a powerful antidote (解药) to stress, causing positive changes. Doing a hobby you enjoy puts your brain into a “flow” state. These brain states are characterized by feelings of deep relaxation, passive focus, creativity and daydreaming.
While a hobby is anything you do in your free time that brings you joy or pleasure, not all hobbies are created the same when it comes to health and happiness. To choose how you spend your time, ask yourself how you feel when you finish doing an activity. Many people, for example, will treat watching online shows or scrolling through social media as a hobby, but the reality is that they feel numb (麻木的) or even feel worse after doing it. These kinds of mindless activities give more of a short-term high and can leave you feeling emptier and more tired afterward. It is harmful to your health in the long run.
What hobbies are right for you differs based on your personality, interests, abilities and resources. A good way to choose a hobby is by considering which areas of your life you’d like to improve right now. For example, if you’d like to add more movement to your life, improve your memory and build friendships, you might enjoy a group exercise hobby like “star tour” night hikes. Or, if you’re interested in improving how you feel and finding a sense of purpose, look into a hobby like starting a community garden or helping elder people learn English.
Is there a right number of hobbies to have? The answer is personal. Some people focus all their energies on the one thing, while others enjoy a variety of activities. Anyway, it’s a good idea to challenge yourself to try something new every once in a while, as something new and unusual is good for stimulating (刺激) new connections in your brain and with other people.
Hobbies are fun, so why is it so hard to find the motivation (动机) to do them? With our busy lives, it can be challenging to find the time and energy, but it’s worth it. To enjoy any hobby, have a “no-fail” attitude. If you’re trying something new, remind yourself that everyone is bad at something the first time they try it, so focus on having fun. For hobbies you’ve already developed, remind yourself that any time spent doing your hobby is beneficial. And even if everything goes sideways, at least you’ll have a story to tell.
Making the time to do something enjoyable on a regular (规律的) basis will have a great effect on your life. Now it’s your turn: go find the thing that lights you up and do more of it!
34.Which of the following helps people choose right hobbies?
A.Paying attention to something their friends enjoy doing.
B.Thinking about something they want to make progress in.

D.Focusing on something that the community requires them to do.
35.What can we learn from the passage?

C.Losing oneself in a hobby awakens the imagination.

36.What does the writer mean by saying “at least you’ll have a story to tell”?

Nature has many ways of solving problems. Humans learn a lot from animals and plants. There is a science that studies how we copy ideas from nature to create useful products. This science is called biomimetics (仿生学).
Some animals, like the sugar glider, have wing-like structures (结构). They spread out their arms and legs to slow down and land easily. The idea for wing-suits, special clothes that let people experience flying, comes from the sugar glider.
Other animals, like the armadillo, have structures to protect themselves. The armadillo has a hard shell (壳) that protects it from dangerous animals. When it feels dangerous, it rolls (卷曲) into a ball for safety. Once the danger is gone, it unrolls. This behavior gave the idea for the design of a backpack with a hard surface to protect the things inside.
Plants have also helped create amazing inventions. One famous example is Velcro (魔术贴). Velcro has two pieces of cloth that stick together when pressed. The idea for Velcro came from the burrs (带刺的小果实) of a plant. They have special structures to allow themselves to stick to clothes or hair, helping them spread to other places.

35.What can we learn from the passage?

Nature has many ways of solving problems. Humans learn a lot from animals and plants. There is a science that studies how we copy ideas from nature to create useful products. This science is called biomimetics (仿生学).
Some animals, like the sugar glider, have wing-like structures (结构). They spread out their arms and legs to slow down and land easily. The idea for wing-suits, special clothes that let people experience flying, comes from the sugar glider.
