Three hundred years ago, traders from Shanxi Province sold tea to foreign countries and in turn they brought back the secrets of how to make glassware (玻璃制品).
Luo Qinqin, a 40-year-old native of Qixian City in Shanxi, is a skilled glassworker. She is one of the few women glassworkers who have mastered the skill of glass pulling.
In a workshop in Qixian, where glassware is handmade with the help of blowpipes (吹管), Luo and her workmates are always busy working. Every day, Luo works in the workshop where the temperature is over 40℃, often making her clothes wet. She has to push and pull a 1.5-meter, 1-kilogram blowpipe 5,000 to 6,000 times.” I often get burned by the hot blowpipe and have got hurt many times.” Luo said. However, she never gives up. After practicing for thousands of times, Luo won first place in the glass pulling competition in Qixian in 2013.
The glass-pulling process, the most important step in the handmade glassware, is challenging because it’s difficult to control length and thickness. For example, when making a wineglass stem (酒杯柄), the length must be controlled within 0.2 mm, and the thickness within 0.5 mm. Luo can make it both within 0.2 mm. “I really enjoy the process, as each piece of glassware is born in my hands like artwork.” Luo said.
However, Luo is worried about the inheritance of the skill because there are fewer young people in the factories to work on glassware making. So she encouraged more young people to learn about the skills of traditional glass pulling and pass them down. “I want to make our Chinese glassware products better through my efforts, so that our products will go worldwide,” Luo said.

Around 1,200 tons of dead fish, mostly sardines (沙丁鱼) were discovered on a beach in Hakodate, an island in northern Japan on Dec 7, 2023. Tons of dead sardines were collected by local fishermen.
About a week later, in Nakiri, a town hundreds of miles away from Hokkaido, 30~40 tons of dead sardines washed up on its coast.
“The cause is unknown at the moment,” Mikine Fujiwara, a fisheries official in Japan, told Mainichi Shimbun Daily, “but we plan to check the seawater to uncover it.” He also advised local fishers not to consume the dead fish, “We don’t know for sure why these fish washed up. They may be harmful to human health.”
According to scientists at the Hokkaido Research Organization, the die-offs could be caused by many things, like sudden changes in water temperature, the shortage of oxygen (氧气) or tiredness after long-time moving.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” a fisherman who has been working in the area for 25 years said, “I just can’t believe the huge number of the dead fish. It happened just three months after nuclear (核) polluted-water was poured into the sea. It makes me feel that the sea ecosystem is changing.”
Generally, it is difficult to find out the reasons behind the die-offs. Perhaps the natural world is using the die-offs to remind human to love the earth and keep the balance of nature.

As a student, there’s a skill I am truly thankful for—the ability to manage my time successfully. 41 It’s like having many plates going in the air, and if you’re not careful, they can all fall off. That’s where time management comes in handy.
42 By seeing what needs to be done clearly, I can plan time wisely and avoid last-minute rushes. It makes sure that I not only complete my plans but also have time for hobbies and relaxation.
Another main part is setting priorities (确定优先事项). Not all things are of the same importance or needed to be solved now. 43 This way, even if unexpected things come up, I’ve already taken care of the most important ones.
I’m really a busy student: homework, projects and after-school activities. But I’ve found ways to work through them. Breaking down big things into smaller, more manageable steps makes them easier to finish. I also treat myself to a short break or a favorite snack after completing each step.
Successful time management isn’t just about being organized. 44 Life can throw unexpected things, such as a sudden family event or a friend in need. I’m able to change my timetable accordingly to deal with them easily.
In a word, the skill of time management has been a game-changer for me. It’s not just about being on time for classes. 45

When winter comes, Siberian cranes migrate from northeast Siberia in Russia to Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, China. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season. However, climate change has endangered the birds’ habitats.
“In some years, the Poyang Lake experiences floods, while in others, it experiences droughts. Both of these lead to the problem that there isn’t enough food in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a researcher from the National Bird Banding Center of China, said to China Daily.
To help deal with the problem, the local government has built 70 hectares of lotus roots in Nanchang to provide food during the winter for the cranes. The bird population has risen from about 3,000 to more than 5,000 over the past 20 years, according to Qian.
Over the years, China has worked hard to protect migratory birds. Recently, 1,140 places in the country have been taken as important breeding grounds, wintering grounds and migratory stops, with most of them located in wetlands. They play a key role in cleaning water, preventing floods, and helping with biodiversity.
To protect China’s wetlands, the Wetlands Protection Law was introduced on June 1, 2022. It stops building work on important national wetlands and stops activities, including giving out wastewater. Thanks to these efforts, China has reported more bird wintering in the nation’s wetlands. For example, last December, Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve recorded more than 2,900 tundra swans up from some 1,000 seen during the winter of 2021.
61.What has endangered the birds’ habitats?
62.Where has the local government built 70 hectares of lotus roots?

A.performs B.has performed C.is performed D.was performed

A.has read; to lend B.had read; to lend C.has read; lending D.had read; lending
decide to do sth.是固定短语,意为“决定做某事”,故后接不定式“to lend”。故选B。
10.— ______ you ______ the movie Oppenheimer?

29.Where did traders get the secrets of making glassware?
A.From Shanxi province.
B.From other provinces in China.

D.She refuses to teach young people glass pulling.
31.The underlined word “inheritance” probably means “________”.

32.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The introduction of Luo Qinqin and glassware making.
B.The process of making glassware by hand in Qixian.

In a small village, there were two brothers named Leo and Jack. They lived next door to each other on their farms for 20 years. Every day, they worked together and happily helped each other.
One day, the two brothers had a fight—Jack thought Leo took his favorite hammer (锤子) without telling him, but Leo actually used it to repair Jack’s broken chair and forgot to tell him. This led to a complete hush between them, and neither spoke to the other again. After a week, someone knocked on Leo’s door. When he opened it, he found a man with a craftsman’s (工匠的) toolbox. The man said, “I’m looking for some work. Do you have any small jobs I can help with?”
Leo thought for a moment and replied, “Yes, I have a job for you.” He pointed to a wide ditch (沟渠) on the farm and said, “My brother and I used to work together, but last week, he dug this ditch to separate our farms. I want you to build a wall there, so I don’t have to see my brother anymore.”
The craftsman agreed. Leo then left for town to do some shopping. When he returned, he was surprised to see a beautiful bridge across the ditch instead of the wall he had asked for. Just as he was about to ask the craftsman what had happened, Jack walked across the bridge with tears in his eyes, “I’m so sorry, Leo.
When and where did it happen? How did it make you feel? Why? What did you learn from the experience? I wonder if you could share a story in your junior high school life with me?
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Alex

【答案】例文
Dear Alex,
I’m so glad to hear from you. Yeah. How time flies! We will graduate from junior high school. Looking back on the past few years, I have changed a lot.
I used to be shy and quiet, but now I am more outgoing and confident. I have made many friends and learned to communicate with others better. My most unforgettable experience happened last year when I participated in the school’s English speech contest. At first, I was very nervous and afraid of speaking in front of so many people. But with the encouragement of my teacher and classmates, I managed to overcome my fear and delivered a successful speech. It has made me more confident.
So much for this now! I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Wang Lin
