Have you ever wondered how plants and animals live? This is where the idea of a food chain comes into play. A food chain is a step-by-step order that explains how energy moves from one living thing to another. It shows how plants, animals, and even tiny things are connected.
The food chain begins with the producers (plants). Without plants, no other living thing could live because they produce the energy for all other living things. And plants use sunlight to make their own food. Animals that eat plants are called herbivores (食草动物), like rabbits and deer. Herbivores are at the second level of the food chain.
Some animals, like foxes and eagles, eat herbivores. These animals are called carnivores (食肉动物). They are at the third level of the food chain. Some carnivores, such as lions and sharks, are at the very top of the food chain. They have no natural enemies. They help control the number of animals below them in the food chain.
If one part of the food chain is broken, it influences everything else. For example, if grass dies because there is little or no rain in a season, rabbits won’t have food. Without rabbits, foxes will have less food to eat. Then the terrible results will continue on and on. That’s why we need to take care of the environment. When the food chain is stable, nature stays balanced and healthy.
By studying the food chain, scientists can better understand the influence of human activities on the environment. Besides, the food chain can guide us in making wise decisions about nature.
23.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The steps of the food chain. B.The problem of the food chain.
C.The order of the food chain. D.The meaning of the food chain.
24.How does the food chain work?

A.③→①→② B.③→②→① C.①→③→② D.②→③→①
25.What will happen if grass dies in the food chain?
A.There will be little rain. B.Rabbits will be better protected.
C.Foxes will lose their food. D.The number of deer will grow.
26.What does the underlined word “stable” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Easy to break. B.Full of producers. C.Strong and unchanging. D.Bad for animals.

Some of us live in big houses while some of us live in small houses. Some of us live in apartments in very tall buildings while some of us live in bungalows next to the sea. But most of us live in houses that look like…well...houses. But not everyone. Some people like things that are a little different, and that includes their homes. For example, there’s a house that looks like a strawberry in Japan, another one that looks like a mushroom in Ohio, US, and there’s a toilet-shaped house in South Korea. There’s even a house in Poland that is completely upside down!
Maybe you know the children’s poem about the old lady who lived in a shoe. In Pennsylvania, US, there is a real shoe house. Of course, it’s not really a shoe, just a house in the shape of a shoe. The boss of a local shoe factory called Mahlon N. Haines had the idea of building it. He used it as a guesthouse. When he died, it became an ice-cream shop for a while. These days, it’s a museum.
The One Log House in Garberville, California, US, is a one bedroom house inside the trunk of a 2,000-year-old giant redwood tree. It took two people seven months to remove all the inside of the tree and make a living space that is just over two metres high and nearly 10 metres long.
Joanne Ussary from Benoit, Mississippi, in the US, lives in a plane. It’s a Boeing 727 without the wings. The plane cost $2,000 and it cost another $4,000 to move it on to her land. She spent another $24,000 making it into a home.
It’s not the only “flying” home in the US. And believe it or not, there is a walking house in Denmark. It’s a hexagonal tube (六角管) supported by six metal legs. It can move over most surfaces. It is a building works between Danish artists and scientists. Moving home couldn’t be any easier. When you want to live somewhere new, just push a button and walk your house to a new location.
27.How many houses mentioned in the passage are in the US?
A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.
28.What was the shoe house in Pennsylvania used by Mahlon N. Haines?
A.A guesthouse. B.A big shoe. C.A museum. D.An ice-cream shop.
29.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The shoe home was made from a big shoe.
B.The One Log House is 2,000 years old now.
C.Moving a walking house is not difficult for anyone.
D.Joanne Ussary spent $24,000 making a plane into his home.
30.Which could be the best title for the passage?
A.My Dream Home B.Coming Home C.Different Homes D.Comfortable Homes

①Herbivores eat producers. ②Carnivores eat herbivores. ③Producers use sunlight to make food.

B.The One Log House is 2,000 years old now.
C.Moving a walking house is not difficult for anyone.
