B Dear Fingers, I’m teaching English in Russia and I had a few problems trying to tell my students about the difference between “must” and “have to”. Please, could you help me? All the best. Greg Dear Greg, I would be glad to try and help you. Let’s see, first of all you could tell your students that both these words are used for talking about obligations but there are some important differences. Let’s look at them separately. Must Basically, “must” is an obligation that is felt by the person who is talking. It is like saying, “I feel it is necessary to do X”. Let’s see some examples: “I must stop smoking”, which means, “I feel it is necessary for me to stop because it is bad for my health”. “You must finish this by 5: 00 p. m.”, which means “I think it is necessary that you finish this by 5: 00 p. m.”. “She must stop talking like that”, which means “I think it is necessary that she stops talking like that”. Have to On the other hand, “have to” is an obligation that comes from another person. It can also be related to a law, a rule or an agreement. Let’s look at some examples: “I have to see the doctor”, which means “I have an appointment to see the doctor so I have to go”. “She has to get her hair cut now she’s in the army”, which means “She has to get her hair cut because a rule in the army says that it is obligatory”. “You have to take your passport when you go abroad”, which means “you have to take your passport because there is a law that makes this obligatory”. Well, Greg, I hope that has answered your question. I will put some grammar exercises related to this question in the exercise pack so you can practice it too. Apart from (除了) its delicious taste, there are two other important reasons for the Chinese to like the hot pot. The first one is that the hot pot is considered a great way to make new friends. People gather around the pot, chatting, eating, drinking and having fun. The other is that the hot pot is a “healthy meal”. Eating the hot pot can warm the body and improve circulation (血液循环) in winter, and increase perspiration to help cool the body in summer. There are several kinds of hot pots in China with different soup. Two of the most popular hot pots are Sichuan hot pot and Beijing mutton hot pot. Sichuan hot pot is famous for its numbing and spicy (又麻又辣的) taste, due to the addition of a special food material—Sichuan pepper—and other spicy things like chili, which makes it different from other hot pots. Beijing mutton hot pot is regarded as the typical of the northern China hot pots. Mutton is its main part, and the soup is made from lamb bones. When you eat a hot pot in a restaurant, generally, there are two kinds of soup bases spicy and clear. A clear soup base has quite a mild (温和的) taste, which is made from seafood or meat bones. A spicy soup base usually has Sichuan pepper, which is spicy and salty. If you have a mixed group with some who don’t eat spicy food, there is a special pot with a divider in the middle between the spicy and clear soup, which is called a double-flavor hot pot (鸳鸯锅). 81 82 83 84 85 C.根据短文内容, 按要求回答问题。 Taking Pictures or Taking Notes? In a class last December, I wrote some directions on the blackboard for students about their final examination. One young girl quickly took a picture of the board using her smartphone. When I looked in her direction, she apologized, “Sorry. Was it wrong to take a picture?” “I can’t read my own handwriting,” she explained. “It’s best if I take a picture of your writing so I can understand the notes.” Those words started a heated discussion about taking a picture instead of taking notes. Some took pictures of notes because they thought they might lose paper, but they wouldn’t lose their phones. Some took photos because they wanted to record exactly what had been written on the blackboard. Others told me that during class, they would like to listen to the discussion attentively. Taking notes would distract them from important information. It may be convenient to use cameras as note takers. Yet it does raise some questions about the classroom. Is a picture as an effective (有效的) replacement for the process of note-taking? Teachers encourage students to take notes because the act of doing so not only records necessary information but also helps prepare the way of understanding. Encouraging students to take notes seems to be an old-fashioned teaching method. But a method with a long history doesn’t mean it’s out of date. Writing things down makes a student’s brain take an active part in it, according to a study. The act of writing down information enables a person to begin keeping it in mind, and break it into smaller pieces and relate it to what they already know, and play with it in their head. Taking a picture does record the information. However, your brain can not get involved in it. And this is what note-taking is exactly rich in. So can the two be as effective as each other? 86.How did the young girl take notes in the writer’s class? 87.Some people thought that their phones were safer than paper, didn’t they? 88.Why do teachers encourage students to take notes? 89.According to the study, writing information down enables the brain to information in a more active way. Between 1936 and 1997, Friendship Day didn’t have a symbol like Santa Claus for Christmas. However in 1997 the UN named Winnie-the-pooh as the world’s ambassador of friendship. The traditional celebrations include activities such as meeting with friends and giving cards, flowers and gifts to each other. Some people may have parties with their friends. Some may have lunch or dinner together. Others may hang out or go to the movies with friends on this special day. These are popular among all age groups from teenagers to old people. (No more than 2 words) 90.What is taking notes by hand rich in, according to Paragraph 6? (No more than 5 words.) 【答案】86.She took a picture of the board using her smartphone. 87.Yes, they did. 88.Because the act of taking notes not only records necessary information but also helps prepare the way of understanding. 89.keep 90.Brain involvement. 【导语】本文围绕“拍照记笔记还是手写记笔记”展开讨论,分析了两种记笔记方式的特点及教师对学生手写记笔记的态度。 86.根据“One young girl quickly took a picture of the board using her smartphone.”可知,这个年轻女孩用智能手机给黑板拍照来记笔记。故填She took a picture of the board using her smartphone. 87.根据“Some took pictures of notes because they thought they might lose paper, but they wouldn’t lose their phones.”可知,有些人认为手机比纸张更安全,所以答案是肯定的。故填Yes, they did. 88.根据“Teachers encourage students to take notes because the act of doing so not only records necessary information but also helps prepare the way of understanding.”可知,教师鼓励学生记笔记是因为记笔记的行为不仅记录必要的信息,还有助于理解。故填Because the act of taking notes not only records necessary information but also helps prepare the way of understanding. 89.根据“Writing things down makes a student’s brain take an active part in it…The act of writing down information enables a person to begin keeping it in mind…”可知,手写信息能让大脑以更主动的方式记住信息,故填keep。 90.根据“However, your brain can not get involved in it.
