“I have a joke for you.”
“What?” said my wife, still in low spirits.
“Which is faster, hot or cold?” I said, watching her face in expectation (期待), “Hot, because you can 36 a cold.”
She turned her head back and broke into laughter, and her love for a good joke let go the bad feelings from our earlier 37 discussion.
So, I thought I’d try to make others laugh, too.
But at my restaurant job, my partner’s 38 smile made me lose heart. However, I still kept up the courage to try the same joke with a younger waiter, then a front-house manager and 39 my boss in the kitchen. They 40 differently, but no one laughed.
Then one day, to my surprise, the same waiter came up to me during a 41 . “OK,” he said, clearly running through the joke in his 42 one last time.
“What do you 43 a deer with no eyes?”
I was already smiling because I couldn’t believe I was a receiver of a joke for a 44 . “ I don’t know. What?”
“No i-deer (No idea).”
I 45 and laughed. That was all the encouragement I needed.
From then on, I continued to 46 jokes with strangers. From bus drivers to waiters and customers, I noticed a change. The act of telling jokes broke down barriers (隔阂), 47 cold faces into friendly ones.
This journey taught me 48 lessons in communication and the power of humor to keep up spirits. I’ve learned that some people laugh out loud not because of my joke, but because they’ve been having a bad day, week or month and they 49 the unexpected cheers.
So I’m going to continue. I’ll 50 and memorize little jokes to light up my wife’s day and then share them with strangers and friends alike, because making people laugh makes me feel good. Just as the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine.

Billy Mail was feeding fish near his home in the Shetland Islands when suddenly a baby otter (水獭) jumped out right in front of him. This unexpected (出乎意料的) experience led to a valuable friendship between Billy and the otter, whom he named Molly.
Billy and his wife Susan moved to this lonely Scottish island from Aberdeen several years ago. At that time, they didn’t expect to find a new friend from the sea. When the couple first noticed Molly, she was really thin and hungry, as if her bones were almost sticking out. And they believed that Molly’s mother had been killed in a road accident, which led to her having to support herself. Later, Molly became a regular visitor to their garden to look for food, especially in winter.
★ For example, when Billy and Susan were working in the yard, Molly always came close to see what her friends were doing. And this bond (纽带,联系) grew closer as they continued to care for Molly, teaching her new skills and even introducing her to their collie, Jade. And to their joy, Molly and Jade learned to stand each other. Sometimes, the dog would even share his food with this visitor peacefully.
Their story caught the attention of the wildlife cameraman Charlie Hamilton James. Touched by the story, Charlie spent over a year filming a documentary named Billy & Molly. The film beautifully captures (捕捉) the heartwarming relationship between Billy and Molly.
Billy hopes this documentary will encourage others to appreciate the friendship between humans and wildlife. And it isn’t the end of Molly’s tale. He jokes that perhaps one day, Jade’s Revenge could tell the story of how their collie would fight back for their attention.

Believe it or not, we know more about space than we do about the deep ocean. Since 1969. a total of 12 people have walked on the moon, but only three have dived (潜水) to the Mariana Trench’s deepest point. As we all know, it’s very challenging to explore Qomolangma, the Sahara Desert, and the Amazon Rainforest. However, the Mariana Trench’s conditions and depth of about 11, 000 meters make it the most difficult to explore. Even more shocking-Although the ocean covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface, 95% of it is unexplored.
Historically, people explored the ocean just to find ways to travel around the world or to start new trades. Also, to early people, the ocean was a scary place, full of dangerous creatures. They thought that, the deep ocean was dark and lifeless. Furthermore, cold temperatures and huge water pressure prevented ocean exploration, too. Diving into the Mariana Trench, for example, would make you feel like having 50 jumbo jets (巨型喷气式飞机) pressing down on you.
However, the ocean influences everyone in lots of things, from the air we breathe, the food we cat, transportation, medicine, to weather and climate. And the deep ocean holds a huge amount of oil, gas and so on. Therefore, ocean exploration has always been a big dream of humans in modern times.
In recent years, thanks to new technology like improved submarines (潜艇), robots and cameras, humans have been able to explore the deeper sea. On November 17th, 2024, China made a huge breakthrough in deep-sea exploration with its “Mengxiang” ship. With the world’s top drilling system (钻探系统), this amazing ship can reach up to 11, 000 meters below the sea surface, allowing scientists to study and learn more about the earth.
The “Mengxiang” ship is the pride of our nation, pushing the limits of what we know and can achieve. Let’s see how much further China can go in ocean exploration in the future!

71.changed 72.the 73.excitement 74.saying 75.skills 76.with 77.her 78.But 79.are loved 80.simply
根据上文“two new videos”和“One tells …”可知,此处考查one...the other...“一个……另一个……,固定搭配。故填the。
根据“showed their … for her return”可知,此处是指对她的归来表示兴奋,应用动词excite的名词形式excitement“兴奋”,不可数。故填excitement。
根据“share their stories …the world …” 故填with。
故填her。
故填But。
故填are loved。

A Letter for a Joyful and Safe Spring Festival
Dear friends,
Spring Festival is a time for family reunion. It’s also a time to be grateful for what we have and to look forward to the new year with hope. To celebrate it, there are a few things we can do.
We usually sweep out dust from our houses, prepare enough food and drinks and set off fireworks. We’ll also get together to have delicious food and enjoy lion or dragon dances for good luck.
To have a joyful Spring Festival, it’s important for us to keep safety in mind. We need to be careful to prevent accidents when we set off fireworks or cook. Besides, when visiting friends and relatives, we should pay attention to traffic safety. We’d better store foods at the correct temperature to keep them fresh. Cook food properly to avoid illnesses. Don’t let personal information out while sending red pockets.
Wish you a happy and safe Spring Festival.
Yours,
Li Hua
