Have you ever thought about running a marathon (马拉松)? A friend of mine, Stephen, has started training for one, but the idea of completing 26 miles surprises me a lot because it puts a lot of stress on the body.
First, Stephen went to his doctor to make sure he didn’t have heart disease. When he was told he was fit enough to do it, my friend started running every afternoon. He keeps training and makes progress every day. All this training is helping him a lot.
Experts advised him to warm up just before the race because he might get hurt during the race. The biggest problem during the marathon seems to be the water. Experts say that on a hot and humid (湿热的) day we can lose too much water. Those who don’t drink enough may suffer a lot. It means they’ll feel very tired because marathon running can lead to a problem in blood pressure.
Judy O’Sullivan, a nurse at the British Heart Foundation, advises, “It’s important that you train in a right way. Make sure that you join the event step by step and safely. On the day of your event, remember to warm up, and rest if you feel pain or uncomfortable.”
According to experts, a month before the race, a marathon runner should be able to go for 15 miles without feeling too much pressure. Well, Stephen is close to achieving this.
I’m proud of my friend’s effort, but I miss our afternoons drinking beer, eating food and watching football. Stephen said running a marathon is all his dream. He said if he doesn’t make it this time, he will keep trying.
Good on him! Go Stephen! Go.

①In today’s busy world, research shows that more and more people are feeling “time poor”. Time poverty can happen when study, work, or social duties take up too much of a person’s time, leaving little or no time for fun or personal interests. It can also happen when people feel like they are running out of time to reach their goals or finish tasks before the deadline (截止日期). Besides, we often say “yes” to any extra work. It could be to help your team or your friends. But by saying “yes” to everything, you are adding another task to an already full plate.
②People who don’s t have enough time fail to perform well at work and remain stressed. Too much stress can harm mental (心理的) health. Moreover, less quality (优质的) time with friends and family can make a person feel lonelier. So how can you stop being time poor?
③Manage your time properly. It may seem harmless to stay in bed till noon on weekends, but the time wasted every week can add up quickly if you don’t realize it. In order to make better use of your time, you can make careful plans before you actually spend it. Try to find out what things in your life are not that important for now and put them off. In this way, you can stick to your plan and focus better on your work.
④Make quality time a true value in your life. It’s important to focus on how you spend your time with someone or doing something. Train yourself to be more present in your life. That is to say, pay attention to one thing at a time. For example, when you are spending time with your family, be present and enjoy yourself rather than still worry about work.
⑤We are all given the same 24 hours each day. By managing your time properly and valuing quality time, you can make the most of your life and become the real owner of it.

Whether it’s putting your elbows on the table or talking with a mouth full of food, everyone has to watch their manners at some time. Manners have developed over thousands of years and are always changing. Around 100 years ago, children weren’t allowed to speak unless parents spoke to them first. Now young people can make their voices heard in many places.
Manners also mean different things in different countries. Eating food loudly is considered quite impolite in some countries, but in others it’s a sign that people are enjoying their meal. What do you think, are manners important?
Many old people think so. They believe kind words and actions are good to everyone. When someone has good manners, it shows they care about other people’s feelings and want them to be comfortable. In other words, well-mannered people make the world a happier place. Manners also help keep everyone healthy, which is why people should cover their mouths when they cough and keep dirty feet off seats.
However, some young men don’t think so. They hold the idea that manners make people act in a way that doesn’t mean how they really feel. If someone says “thank you” or “sorry” when they don’t mean it, they’re not being polite. In Europe, manners were a way of showing how rich a person was, but does it really matter what type (类型) of knife people use to eat fish? As long as people are kind to others, they should be allowed to act how they like.
36.Why are the table manners mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a story. B.To lead in the topic.
C.To describe the writer’s experiences. D.To explain the meaning of them.
37.How is the passage developed?
A.By making comparisons. B.In the order of time.
C.By giving advice. D.In the order of space.
38.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.We need to care about others. B.Well-mannered people make us happy.
C.Good manners are very important. D.You can be healthy with good manners.
39.What do some young people think of good manners?
A.They are less important than being kind. B.They are very necessary.
C.They make people more relaxed. D.They are easy to follow.
40.What can we know from the passage?
A.Saying sorry certainly means being polite.
B.Eating fish with a knife shows you’re rich.
C.Coughing with the mouth covered is strange.
D.Eating loudly can be good manners sometimes.
