The Double Ninth Festival, also named the Chongyang Festival, falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, people would like to drink chrysanthemum (菊花) wine. The Chinese word for wine is Jiu, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word for “long”, which means “forever”. Another special food for this festival is chrysanthemum cakes. The Chinese word for cake is Gao, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word “high”, showing great progress at work and in daily life.
It is hard to say when these customs began. But there are many stories about the festival. As was recorded in a historical book of the sixth century, there lived a man named Huan Jing. He was learning the magic arts from Fei Changfang. One day, the two people were climbing a mountain. Fei Changfang suddenly stopped and looked very upset. He told Huan Jing, “On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, a disaster will come to your hometown. You must go home at once. Remember to make a red bag for each of your family members. Then you must all tie your bags to your arms, leave home quickly and climb to the top of a mountain. Most importantly, you must all drink some chrysanthemum wine. Only by doing so can your family members be safe.”
On hearing this, Huan Jing rushed home and asked his family to do as his teacher said. The whole family climbed a nearby mountain and did not return until the evening. When they got back home, they found all their animals dead, including chickens, sheep, dogs and even the ox.

Mary was waiting for the airplane to take off. She got a seat by herself. Just then, an air hostess came up to her and asked, “Could you please change your seat? A man would like to sit with his wife.” Mary felt unhappy because the only seat was next to a girl with her arms broken, a black-and-blue face, and a sad expression. “I don’t want to sit there,” Mary thought immediately. But the air hostess said, “The girl needs help.” Finally, Mary moved to that seat.
The girl was named Emily. She was hurt in a car accident and now was on her way for treatment. When the snacks and juice arrived, Mary realized that Emily could not feed herself. Mary considered offering to feed her but hesitated (犹豫的), as it seemed too impolite to offer a service to a stranger. But then Mary realized that Emily’s need was more important.
Mary offered to help her eat. Although Emily was uncomfortable to accept, she agreed. They became closer and closer in a short time. Mary was very glad that she had sat next to Emily and fed her. After the five-hour trip, Mary’s heart was warm, and she had a pleasant time.

The People’s Republic of China celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding in October, 2019. China held its largest military parade(阅兵仪式) in Tian’anmen Square on October 1st. People from home and abroad watched the military parade through different ways. They were all surprised at China’s progress. Looking back at the past, the great changes have taken place in China.

However, in 1978, China started to carry out the reform(改革) and opening-up policy(政策). It was an important turning point for Chinese people. Since then, China has developed rapidly.
Now, people’s life is very different from that in the past. The country tries its best to help poor areas so that all Chinese people can live a good and happy life. China also pays great attention to compulsory(义务的) education. Everything is changing in a surprising way.

As a foreigner, the first time I ate hot pot was in Chongqing, China. The hot pot restaurant was one of the largest and busiest places in the city. In the restaurant, hundreds of people were crowded into one large room. My friend and I sat at a table with a large pot in the middle. It was an amazing experience. I really couldn’t forget it.
Today, the hot pot is one of the most popular forms of cooking in China, and nearly every town and city has some hot pot restaurants. Some people might ask how hot pot becomes so popular. Everyone can eat as much as they want and no one is left out. This is one of the values of Chinese culture. Finally, not only does hot pot taste wonderful, but it is the perfect way to spend time with others.
In China, people often joke that there’s no problem that a hot pot can’t solve. Over a hot pot, people can talk about not just food, but friendship. In China, writing brushes, ink sticks, paper and inkstones are called the Four Treasures of Study. Among the high-quality(高质量的) treasures, the writing brush produced in Huzhou, the ink stick produced in Huizhou, the Xuan paper made in Xuancheng and the inkstone made in Duanxi are the best-known.
Writing brushes can be used to draw pictures on painted pottery(陶器). They are mainly made of the hair of animals. Those made of wool are called yanghao and those made of the weasel’s(鼬的) tail hair are called langhao. Their artistic effects in writing and painting cannot be copied by any other pens.
The ink stick is the pigment(颜料) used in writing and painting. The ink stick produced in Huizhou is of high quality. A story goes like this: Two famous skilled men Xi Chao and his son produced a kind of high-quality ink stick. As a result, Emperor Li Yu in the Southern Tang Dynasty agreed to give them the family name “Li”. From then on, the fame of the Li Ink Stick was widespread. In the Song Dynasty, its producing area was changed into Huizhou, and it was then called the Hui Ink Stick.
Paper is among the four great inventions in ancient China. The famous Xuan paper appeared in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. In Xuanzhou, Anhui Province where Xuan paper is produced, it’s said that Cai Lun’s pupil Kong Dan took the job of producing paper but failed to make perfect white paper. Later he happened to see the ebony(黑檀木) in the rivers. It was wet with the water and turned white. Then he used the bark(树皮) to produce the world-famous Xuan paper.
The inkstone was already very popular in the Han Dynasty. The Ming and Qing Dynasties saw the appearance of the Four Famous Inkstones—Duan Inkstone, She Inkstone, Tao Inkstone and Chengni Inkstone. They can be used not only in writing and painting but also for admiration.

We moved to a beautiful two-storey (两层) old house. The house was built in 1905. It was repaired in 1997.
At first, really small things began to happen that didn’t make me believe that anything was wrong, but as time went on, things started becoming stranger and stranger. Early on, something was missing, and later would be found somewhere else. I just thought I had forgotten where I put it, or perhaps my daughter was playing around with things. Then later on I would hear strange sounds when nobody was at home but me...Yet it was an old house, and sometimes old houses did make small noises. So again, I didn’t really mind.
Then things that I couldn’t explain started happening. It was last November and I was at home alone cleaning the house. When I was sweeping the kitchen floor, I felt a very cold wind blow my hair. I thought the kitchen window must have been opened, but when I checked it, it was closed. The windows were new, and there was no way any cold air came in.
We all felt very strange and moved away from there in October, 2002. I was never really frightened (害怕的). It was just strange, like something or someone was trying to get my attention or something.

Chinese traditional painting and dance are two important parts of the art world. But what about when they meet each other?
This year, a dance drama called Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting (《只此青绿》) was shown on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala. It became popular overnight.
According to CCTV, this poetic dance got the idea from the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》). Created by Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng at about 18, the painting is amazing in its sweeping size, rich coloration and expressive details. It shows a Chinese blue-green landscape: “mountains and groupings of endless rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water”.
The dance shows the Chinese traditional beauty of the painting. The dancers each had a different hairstyle, which looked like a mountain rock. The clothes that they wore were shades of green and blue, which is also poetic show of the mountains and rivers. When the dancers swayed beautifully, the audience seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers. Huge mountains and rivers are coming to life! More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.
In recent years, more and more modern shows highlight Chinese traditional culture and have received warm welcome, especially among young people. They show interest in Chinese culture and are proud of it.
1.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in paragraph 1?
2.In A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains, what color is the Chinese landscape?
3.What does the dancers’ hairstyle look like?
4.Do young people like modern shows which highlight Chinese traditional culture?
5.According to the text, how do you like this poetic dance?

Crosstalk, or xiangsheng, is one of China’s most popular performing arts. People of all ages love it — kids, grandparents, and everyone in between find it super fun. Even many young students enjoy it after class, laughing along with performers on stage.
No one knows exactly when crosstalk started. Some say the Ming Dynasty, but most think it became a real art during the Qing Dynasty when cities were full of energy. At first, one person did dankou (solo acts), telling silly stories or jokes. Later, when three or more joined, it was qunkou (group acts). But today, the most common is duikou (two-person acts). In duikou, there’s a “funny leader” (dougen) who makes most jokes, and a “helper” (penggen) who laughs, asks silly questions, or makes the jokes even funnier. They chat about daily life or silly things, making the audience laugh nonstop.
Crosstalk has four key skills: shuo (telling stories/jokes), xue (copying sounds — like how cats meow or grandpas cough), dou (making people laugh with silly words/faces), and chang (singing short folk tunes). These are taught by older actors to new students, learning by doing.
In recent years, online videos have made crosstalk even more popular. In 2008, China named it a “national intangible heritage” to help keep this funny art alive for more people.
So next time you watch, remember: every laugh comes from lots of practice and happy sharing!
1.When do people think crosstalk became an real art form?
2.What was the earliest form of xiangsheng?
3.How many forms of xiangsheng are introduced in paragraph 2?
4.What are the key skills in xiangsheng according to the text?
5.Do you like xiangsheng? Why or why not?

A while ago I sent out a couple of hundred letters for information on subjects that interest me. One of the questions I asked was “When you think of love, what color comes to your mind?”
One person said “money”. I didn’t know what color that was, maybe green, but I wasn’t sure, so, I didn’t give it a color. Two people said love didn’t have any color. Two other people said love was the color of the rainbow. That’s a nice thought. Now only 3 people chose red as the color they thought of as love. This surprised me, since that is the color used most on Valentines’ Day (情人节). I guess passion doesn’t necessarily mean love. There was a tie of 4 each for white and yellow. I can understand wanting a pure love (white) or a wise and happy love (yellow). Pink is the choice of 5 people who I think need beauty in their lives. Six people said either lavender, lilac (紫丁香) or violet was the color of love. I think all of them want some magic and mystery in their love lives. Green was the color chosen by 7 people as the color they thought of as love. These people must want a balanced love and maybe some money too.
The most surprising answer was that 14 people picked blue. I think these people may know about love. Love should be sincere and true. Maybe if you have “the blues”, it is because you don’t have love. Most blues music is about lost love. Maybe blue is the color of love. I just can’t see sending a blue heart to my lover next Valentines’ Day.
This little survey is not scientific, but it is very interesting. Did you know not all people dream in color? Well, I hope everyone makes sure to daydream in the most wonderful and wild colors possible.
1.What did the writer send out a while ago?
2.Why was the writer surprised at only 3 people’s choosing red?
3.How many people choose pink as the color of love?
4.What was the most surprising answer?
5.Can the writer send a blue heart to his lover next Valentines’ Day? Why or why not?

“No, no.” said the woman. “He must look for his bag tomorrow morning. If he can’t find it, he’ll telephone the police.”
They thought for a few minutes. Then the woman had an idea. “We have forgetful grass. Why not put some forgetful grass into his food? If he has the food, he will forget to take his bag away.”
The old man had the food with the forgetful grass and went to bed. The next morning when the owner got up, he found the door open and the old man had left with the bag. He was angry and woke his wife up, “What a fool! Your forgetful grass isn’t useful at all.”

Planting trees to stop storms
Fourteen years ago, President Xi Jinping said “clear waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets (绿水青山就是金山银山)”. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the central government has placed great importance on environmental protection. Great achievements have been made in this area in recent decades through strong measures (措施).
Fighting desertification 荒漠化防治
Desertification has been a major challenge for China. In the early 21st century, many parts of the country, including Xinjiang, Gansu and Inner Mongolia, were affected by sandstorms.
During a sandstorm, large amounts of sand are blown into the air by strong winds. They usually happen in deserts. They can do great harm to plants, animals and buildings.
In recent years, the government has tried to prevent (防止) deserts from growing in size and bringing more sandstorms. Planting trees has played an important role. China’s total forest coverage (覆盖率) rose from 12 percent in the 1980s to 22.96 percent last year. The total desert coverage has been reduced by an average of 2,424 square kilometers every year. That’s as big as 340,000 soccer fields.
One example of this is the Mu Us Desert (毛乌素沙漠), one of China’s four major deserts. One-quarter of the desert has been turned into forest.
Air pollution control 治理空气污染
China has improved its air quality in recent years as efforts (努力) to control air pollution take effect.
Back in January 2013, thick smog (雾霾) covered a total area of 2.7 million square kilometers in cities around China.
To solve this problem, the government rolled out a series of measures to control air pollution, particularly in three major regions: the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei cluster, the Yangtze River Delta and the Fenhe-Weihe River Plain.
Beijing has made many efforts to fight air pollution, such as by promoting (推广) clean energy, monitoring emissions (监控排放) from factories, and encouraging the use of new-energy vehicles instead of gas-powered cars.
1.What has been a major challenge for China?
2.What can sandstorms do harm to?
3.How to prevent deserts from growing in size and bringing more sandstorms?
4.What percentage has China’s forest coverage increased from the 1980s to last year?
5.What kind of cars are encouraged by the government to use?

The girl was named Emily. She was hurt in a car accident and now was on her way for treatment. When the snacks and juice arrived, Mary realized that Emily could not feed herself.

Now, people’s life is very different from that in the past. The country tries its best to help poor areas so that all Chinese people can live a good and happy life. China also pays great attention to compulsory(义务的) education. Everything is changing in a surprising way.

It was too late at night when an old man came to a small town. He found a small hotel and wanted to stay there for the night. After he went into his room, the owner said to his wife, “Look at his bag. There must be much money in it. Let’s take it away when he is asleep, shall we?”
“No, I don’t think so. He must forget something.” said his wife. “Oh! I remember now!” cried out the man suddenly, “He forgot to pay for the night.”
