Should students use AI to do homework? Here are four students’ opinions.
Dylan, 13
Many people worry that AI can be used as a cheating tool. But AI can be set to guide students through questions instead of giving them the answers. Nobody has to fall behind in class! And AI “teachers” can provide much support for students.
Harper, 10
Kids’ brains need to be exercised to develop, just like their bodies. Homework should teach kids skills and develop their brains. AI may be a useful tool, but students should learn to solve problems on their own. And AI stops them from learning on their own.
Alexa, 11
Teaching kids how to use AI can prepare them for our AI-filled future. And it’s better that students learn about AI’s limitations (局限性) now. I believe that as long as it’s done well, teaching AI in schools will change the future for the better.
Ninis, 12
We shouldn’t introduce AI into schools. First, AI is getting “smarter” every day. Teachers may not know how to best use them in their classes. Second, think of the cost. Many schools wouldn’t be able to buy it, and that’s not fair to some students. And most of all, AI just gives students information. But teachers know how to help students get information.

Recently, I asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special, “ she replied.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much more beauty must be found by sight? And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes for just three days.
On the first day, I should want to see the people who have made my life worth living and the books which have been read to me. In the afternoon, I should take a walk in the woods and admire the beauties of nature. That night, I should not be able to sleep.
On my second day, I should go to the museums to see man’s progress. I should try to explore the spirit of man through his art. In the evening, I should spend at the movies.
The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life. At midnight, permanent (永久的) night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen.
I who am blind can give one suggestion to those who see: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses, Hear the songs of birds, as if tomorrow you could never hear again...But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant.

Confucianism (儒家思想) has been followed by Chinese people for more than two thousand years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constants (五常). These are ren, yi, li, zhi and xin. They are general virtues(美德) around the world. The most important two are ren and li.
Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to other”. It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule (treat others as you wish to be treated).
While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as “duty” or even “respect”. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors. While ren is mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and towards the world around us.
Perhaps the most well-known Confucian virtue is xiao. This is the duty children have to their parents. Xiao means loving, respecting, obeying and taking care of one’s parents in their old age.
In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious (和谐的) society: Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.

Around 1,200 tons of dead fish, mostly sardines (沙丁鱼) were discovered on a beach in Hakodate, an island in northern Japan on Dec 7, 2023. Tons of dead sardines were collected by local fishermen.
About a week later, in Nakiri, a town hundreds of miles away from Hokkaido, 30~40 tons of dead sardines washed up on its coast.
“The cause is unknown at the moment,” Mikine Fujiwara, a fisheries official in Japan, told Mainichi Shimbun Daily, “but we plan to check the seawater to uncover it.” He also advised local fishers not to consume the dead fish, “We don’t know for sure why these fish washed up. They may be harmful to human health.”
According to scientists at the Hokkaido Research Organization, the die-offs could be caused by many things, like sudden changes in water temperature, the shortage of oxygen (氧气) or tiredness after long-time moving.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” a fisherman who has been working in the area for 25 years said, “I just can’t believe the huge number of the dead fish. It happened just three months after nuclear (核) polluted-water was poured into the sea. It makes me feel that the sea ecosystem is changing.”
Generally, it is difficult to find out the reasons behind the die-offs. Perhaps the natural world is using the die-offs to remind human to love the earth and keep the balance of nature.

Do you know the etiquette (礼节) in giving and receiving gifts? As a business traveler, it might be necessary to give a gift to a customer from another culture. With a history of thousands of years, China’s etiquette has formed and been passed down generation by generation. In China, gifts are usually given to show respect, appreciation (感激) and build relationships. In both giving and receiving gifts, you should know what you are supposed to do in China. Here are some tips for you.
First, there are many occasions when gifts are given in China, such as weddings, birthdays, festivals, and business meetings. When giving a gift, it is the most important to consider the receiver’s relationship with the giver.
Second, when a gift is offered, the giver usually uses two hands when offering a gift to another person. The receiver may accept the gift with appreciation. After receiving a gift, he or she will open it later to avoid appearing greedy (贪婪的) or impatient.
Another tip for gift-giving relates to wrapping (包装) gifts, especially in choosing the color of paper used to wrap. In China, for example, white is not a good choice. Because in Chinese culture, white is the unlucky color. White and black are also to be avoided when wrapping gifts in China, because of the relation of these colors to funerals (葬礼). Joyful colors such as red, yellow, and pink are commonly used in Chinese culture.
Last but not least, for Chinese people, it is necessary to notice that you are supposed to send a gift in return. When you receive a gift, you will offer back to the one when it is suitable. This is called “Li Shang Wang Lai”. The customary reciprocity (互惠) is also considered a traditional way to build and maintain (保持) relationships.

二、阅读理解
(一)阅读下列短文, 根据短文内容, 选择最佳答案。

How was it possible I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note?

13. What’s the purpose of the numbers in the first and second paragraphs?
A. Giving an example.
B. Leading to the topic.
C. Describing the situation.

B. eat or drink something
C. fill someone with a strong feeling
15. What might cause the death of fish according to the fisherman?
A. The long-time moving.
B. The shortage of oxygen.
C. The polluted sea environment.
16 Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? (P=Paragraph)
