Most people would call it hopeless: two rings accidentally dropped into the compost (堆肥) , carried away with 18 tons of waste, and buried at the local dump. But one Mission, B. C. husband refused to give up — and despite the difficulties, he dug through the mess until he found both of his wife’s precious rings.
Jeannine first noticed the jewelry (首饰) missing after washing her hands at a restaurant. “I went to the washroom. I washed my hands, and I looked down and said, ‘Where are my rings? ‘I was so disappointed that I left the restaurant.”
The couple reviewed their steps and realized the rings must have slipped off the night before. After a trip to the movies, Jeannine spilled some popcorn on the lawn and threw it into the compost. That’s when her precious wedding and anniversary rings likely went along with the leftovers.
By the time they pieced it together, their garbage and compost had already been collected. That didn’t stop Steve Van Ysseldyk. Determined to find them, he showed up at the Mission Sanitary Landfill (垃圾填埋场) the next morning and asked if he could search through the massive compost pile.
At first, even the landfill workers thought this effort was like looking for fish in a tree. “My brain was trying to figure out a way to tell him to go to buy his wife new wedding rings,” said contractor Denny Webster. Still, he admired Steve’s determination and helped by using a digger to help separate smaller piles.
Searching through the mess, Steve began to recognize his household waste — including the popcorn bag. Then, astonishingly, he spotted the rings, covered with butter but undamaged. “She basically broke down crying, and cried all the way home,” Steve said of his wife’s reaction to the good news.
Jeannine now jokes their 26-year marriage is even stronger. “Well, yes, because I know how much he loves me — he’s willing to go through a rotten, stinky compost pile,” she said with a laugh.
4. Which saying best describes Steve?
A. Many hands make light work. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Well begun is half done. D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
5. How was Jeannine’s state of mind when she left the restaurant?
A. She was eager to get help. B. She felt extremely upset.
C. She was proud of her jewelry. D. She felt relaxed and cheerful.
6. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 3?
A. Where the waste was piled. B. What the rings meant to the couple.
C. How the rings were probably lost. D. Why the rings were thrown away.
7. How did Denny Webster treat Steve?
A. He discouraged him. B. He made fun of him.
C. He lent him a hand. D. He offered new rings to him.

When a child feels sick, one of the first things a parent does is reach for a thermometer (温度计) . That common reaction got one company thinking. But what if the thermometer, in addition to measuring body temperature, could serve as a communication device? Could it then connect people with information about infections (传染病) and gather real-time data (数据) on diseases as they spread? That is the idea behind health data business. A company, called Kinsa, sells such “smart” thermometers.
Over the past several weeks, Kinsa has been following the spread and severity (严重性) of flu-like symptoms across the country. The company says its findings are similar to those reported by the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .
The CDC collects information about the spread of the flu from state and regional reports. But Kinsa is able to identify high rates of infection in even smaller areas. Fast and detailed information about how disease is spreading can make a difference during a health crisis. If you knew when and where a disease was starting, you could target the people who needed the treatment and potentially prevent pandemics from occurring.
A Kinsa thermometer sells for anywhere between $14. 99 and $49. 99 in the U. S. Users connect the device through Bluetooth wireless technology to a smartphone app. The software program asks questions about a person’s condition.
The user’s personal information is kept private. With its thermometers in 500, 000 homes nationwide, Kinsa says it receives 25, 000 temperature readings every day. The company cannot identify diseases or recognize differences between different kinds of diseases. But by gathering data about individuals’ body temperatures and other information, Kinsa can report where flu-like symptoms are rising.
Some companies, such as drug companies, want to know where and how diseases are spreading. Then they fill stores with products and change marketing plans. Kinsa is also starting an effort with some U. S. businesses, which buy the thermometers for their employees. When an employee has a high temperature, Kinsa can notify the person about available health care help.
8. What drove the rise of “smart” thermometers?
A. The harm of the disease. B. The competition in medicine industry.
C. A company’s creative thinking. D. Modern communication technology.
9. Why is the CDC’s information collection mentioned?
A To show Kinsa’s advantages. B. To stress the importance of data exchange.
C. To explain the difficulty in collecting data. D. To prove the CDC’s support for Kinsa.
10. What can Kinsa know from the users of the thermometer?
A. The cause of the diseases. B. Areas where diseases spread.
C. The treatment patients need. D. The personal information of patients.
11. What does the underlined word “notify” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Teach. B. Treat. C. Protect. D. Inform.
D
It’s the robotic version of “human’s best friend”. The four-legged robot from Boston Dynamics is being put to work at Ford Motor Company in Michigan. At that time, researchers were trying to figure out how to enter the narrow area within their facilities, and after brainstorming, they came up with Fluffy.
Researchers could fix a 360° high-quality camera onto it as well as a laser scanner. Fluffy works with an autonomous robot named Scatter to help create a 3D map of the factory floor. They autonomously go through the factory and then stop, scan, move, stop, scan to waypoints like a GPS.
Fluffy goes where Scatter can’t reach, helping create a more complete map of the space, which in turn helps engineers as they re-plan floor plans for production of new car models. In some final assembly areas, the facility is changing monthly.
The robot dog can be made with a variety of sensors (传感器) for different jobs. In chemical manufacturing, people want a gas sensor to see if there’s a leakage (泄漏) in the environment so that they can fix the leak faster. Other customers need a thermal camera (热成像仪) so that they can look at the performance of some of their industrial equipment. For example, that is overheating and that could potentially cause a problem.
Ensuring workers’ safety in dangerous environments is one of the main benefits of using this robot. So is collecting more kinds of data. Researchers are creating all of these systems to interpret and collect and analyze big data. The problem is that they can only get a very narrow set of information into those systems.
Unlike a fixed sensor, this robot can collect information wherever it’s programmed to go. Boston Dynamics is currently renting the technology so companies can find ways to use it. For some, this robot dog could turn out to be a very good boy indeed.
12. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Fluffy. B. The factory. C. The camera. D. Scatter.
13. Why might a chemical factory use this robot dog?
A. To control the machine’s heat. B. To do dangerous jobs.
C. To check for gas leaks. D. To make a factory map.
14. What challenge are researchers facing at present?
A. Few companies accept the robot. B. Workers’ safety can’t be ensured.
C. It’s hard to collect information in dangerous places. D. There isn’t enough data to be used.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The popularity of renting robot dogs. B. The robot dog in a car factory.
C The latest development of robots. D. The future of car production.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Andrew Nixon, a firefighter in St. Bernard Parish, was driving home from a wedding with his wife when he spotted flames ahead near the Mississippi state line. A car had crashed with an 18-wheel truck and was quickly catching fire.
“All I did see was that the driver of the car just turned to the left, and I saw that her tires were on fire,” Nixon recalled. Realizing someone was trapped inside, he stopped his vehicle and ran toward the burning car.
“I ran up to the car. I was trying to ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is anyone else in the car?’ But she didn’t answer,” he said. “So, I ran around to the other side — the right passenger side — and honestly, I had tunnel vision. I started to worry about the driver and I thought, ‘I need to get her out.’”
With flames growing, Nixon used his bare hands to smash through the windshield, cutting himself in the process. As smoke filled the car, he knew he had only moments left.
“I saw the flames coming into the car” he said. “So, I knew I had to get her out right then and there. I grabbed her, lifted her up, pulled her out the top of the door, and brought her to the side. She only had seconds before that car was fully swallowed by fire.”
Firefighters from St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 1 arrived moments later, but by then the vehicle had already been swallowed by flames.
“His nature took over. His training took over,” said Fire Chief Chris Kaufmann. “He went straight into her car and did whatever it took to get her out, because he knew if he didn’t, she wasn’t going to make it. He was her last chance.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

8 What drove the rise of “smart” thermometers?
A. The harm of the disease. B. The competition in medicine industry.
C. A company’s creative thinking. D. Modern communication technology.
9. Why is the CDC’s information collection mentioned?
A. To show Kinsa’s advantages.
A. Teach. B. Treat. C. Protect. D. Inform.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11.

15 What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The popularity of renting robot dogs. B. The robot dog in a car factory.
C. The latest development of robots. D. The future of car production.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. B

“I saw the flames coming into the car,” he said.

When the woman left hospital, she invited Nixon and the media to celebrate.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The woman as well as Nixon was sent to a hospital. The woman suffered minor burns and shock, while Nixon was treated for cuts on his hands from smashing the windshield. Doctors praised Nixon’s quick action, noting that any delay would have been fatal for the woman. When she regained consciousness, the first thing she did was ask about her rescuer, tears streaming down her face as she expressed her gratitude.
When the woman left hospital, she invited Nixon and the media to celebrate. She held a small ceremony, presenting Nixon with a heartfelt letter and a medal of appreciation. “You gave me a second chance at life,” she said emotionally. Nixon, humble as ever, said he only did what any firefighter would do. The media’s coverage of the heroic act spread quickly, earning Nixon widespread praise from the community.
