Ella didn’t really like it when the kids said, “Betty, Betty, long as spaghetti!” But she never told them to stop either. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Ella visited her grandfather. She saw one chicken there. It was smaller than the others and it didn’t have many feathers (羽毛).
“That poor chicken, what’s the matter with it?” she asked her grandfather.

Passage 9
Students these days often have a lot of worries. Sometimes they have problems with their schoolwork, and sometimes with their friends. What can they do about this? Some people believe the worst thing is to do nothing. Laura Mills, a teenager from London, agrees. “Problems and worries are normal in life,” says Laura. “But I think talking to someone helps a lot. Unless we talk to someone, we’ll certainly feel worse.”
Laura once lost her wallet, and worried for days. She was afraid to tell her parents about it. She even walked three miles to school each day because she didn’t have any money. She just kept thinking, “If I tell my parents, they’ll be angry!” In the end, she talked to her parents and they were really understanding. Her dad said he sometimes made careless mistakes himself. They got her a new wallet and asked her to be more careful. “I will always remember to share my problems in the future!” Laura says.
Robert Hunt advises students about common problems. He feels the same way as Laura. “It is best not to run away from our problems. We should always try to solve them.” He thinks the first step is to find someone you trust to talk to. This person doesn’t need to be an expert like himself. Students often forget that their parents have more experience, and are always there to help them. In English, we say that sharing a problem is like cutting it in half. So you’re halfway to solving a problem just by talking to someone about it!

“Hi, Desha!”
Surprised, I found my brother James standing behind me. “Don’t you have a basketball game to watch?” I asked.

“Company is the last thing I want. Can’t I have a little peace and quiet?”

“Eliza’s always prying into my personal life. Yesterday I found her looking through my diary. Now everyone is in the living room watching the game. All I wanted to do was to watch a movie. But when I went to my room, Sara was there listening to the radio. I just want to be alone for a change.”

Nurafiza came up with a reward system (奖励制度) for her two sons at home and posted it online. She made a list of housework and gave them money for what they did. The list of housework included cleaning up the house and putting away their toys for RM50 each, studying for RM150, and even not fighting with each other for RM10 to 15. You may ask yourself these questions many times: What should I do with my life? Should I be a teacher, a scientist or a doctor? You may always have many ideas about that. As a middle school student, it’s time for you to choose one.
But don’t just think about your dream job. You need to work hard for it. Getting the right job for yourself is like climbing. You do it step by step before you reach the top. You need to take the necessary lessons.
Maybe you want to be a reporter. You might start by working for a newspaper. In college, you might choose a journalism major (新闻学专业) and work for a newspaper when you are free. You might work as an intern (实习生) after finishing college. As long as you work hard for your dream, you will become a great reporter one day. Then you will have more useful lessons to take and more tiring work to do.
We never stop learning. This does not just mean school education. In fact, our learning started long ago. Many things we did in the middle school gave us much we will use later in our job. Passage 7
Earlier, only face-to-face communication was possible, but with the development of technology, we now have the phone, email, video calls and so on. It has become easier and much cheaper to communicate or have a conversation. We can easily communicate with our loved ones, whether they’re close or far away.
Face-to-face communication includes direct personal interaction (互动). Both parties can see each other’s body language and facial expressions, and understand them easily, leading to more effective communication. A study has shown that in our day-to-day life when we interact with someone face to face, we have a nonverbal (非言语的) communication of about 93%. In addition, face-to-face communication is more effective in building trust and making deeper connections.
But considering the long distance and time cost, face-to-face communication may not be the best choice. So there, telephone, email, etc. are preferred. Without telephone conversation, some work may be difficult to get done in time. The conversation changes depending on what relationship you have with the caller. For example, it will be informal (非正式的) if you talk to your close friends or relatives. But if you are having a professional telephone conversation, then it will be formal. You must have a lot of practice and confidence to interact with the caller.
Telephone conversations have no nonverbal cues (暗示), but they offer the convenience of communicating from a distance and at any time. Also, as they cannot see each other, both parties can speak without being under pressure (压力).
So, which do you prefer?

Passage 8
Now satellites are helping to forecast (预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere (大气), because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the meteorologists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the meteorologists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.
1.Why can the meteorologists tell us how the weather will change?

C.Because they observe the clouds in the sky.
D.Because they study the change of the wind.

C.The Weathermen D.Weather Satellites
Passage 9
As the weather gets cold, we all have our ways to keep warm. We wear warm clothes and, of course, eat some special foods.
For me, a bowl of hot chicken noodles or tomato soup is the best dish for a cold winter’s evening at Grandma’s house in the US. Certainly, different countries and cities around the world have their special cold-weather foods. I now live in a Chinese city. There are some foods or drinks in the wintertime. I quite like them.

②________
Another food I like is the white radish, or bailuobo in Chinese. This vegetable looks common, but it is useful. People use it to make soups, cakes, and more. In the city I live in, there is a traditional food called youdunzi. People mix white radish with other things and then fry (油炸) them to make this dish.
③________
Something I like best in the wintertime isn’t food but a drink: Pu’er tea. While green tea is more popular in China in the summer, Pu’er tea is a favorite of many people in the winter. Workers need to follow some complicated processes (复杂的步骤) to make the tea. It has a great taste.

Passage 10
There is a special “vegetable basket bus line” in Wuhan, Hubei Province. It helps farmers travel between villages and city areas.
At 5:30 am, there are many passengers around Tuditang Street South Station along the J202 bus line. They carry all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables.
After the bus arrives, the driver helps the farmers put their fruits and vegetables on the bus. Half an hour later, they reach a station close to the largest farmers’ market. Their fresh vegetables can fetch a good price at the morning market.
The bus line passes the most remote counties (偏远的县) in southern Wuhan. The old people along the way grow vegetables at home, and often bring them to the market to sell. Passage 11
World Water Day is on March 22nd each year. It started in 1993 after a UN meeting about the environment. The UN shares reports about water around this day and has different themes every year to help people know and find ways to solve water problems.
Clean water is quite important for drinking, staying clean, and being in good health. Sadly, many kids die every day because they don’t have safe (安全的) water. The UN says lots of people still don’t have it at home, especially in the countryside and places with wars or changing weather.
Many people, often women and kids, have to spend lots of time walking far to get water if there is no clean water around. This takes time away from their work, school, and home tasks. Water is getting less and less, and by 2030, many people might have to move because there’s not enough water.
Some groups are helping bring clean water worldwide. We can also help by playing a part in saving the water resource (资源), and being serious about our water use. And we need to use water smartly, especially in our daily lives. Recycling wastewater, catching rain and planting trees can help save water. Sharing World Water Day on the Internet to ask for more understanding is helpful, too.

The food chains shows the order in which living things choose each other for food. What is it and how does it work? Here are some facts about food chain.
All living things need food to survive. Many animals eat plants. Animals can also eat other kinds of animals. Animals that eat other animals are predators (捕食者). Eating food gives animals energy (能量) and helps them stay healthy. Food helps animals grow bigger and stronger. If they eat well, animals can live long lives.
Many plants and animals are linked (联系) together in food chains. A food chain is a group of plants and animals that get energy from each other. Let’s look at how one forest food chain works. An ant eats part of a plant. A frog is the ant’s predator. The frog eats the ant. However, the frog has a predator, too. There is a snake waiting to eat the frog. What will eat the snake? Passage 2
Betty didn’t like her name. She didn’t like being tall, either. Her classmate made up silly chants, “Betty, Betty, long as spaghetti (意大利面)!” Betty wasn’t in the cool kids’ group.
Ella was a cool kid. She could play the guitar. Wherever Ella went, other kids followed her. They were the “cool kids”.
Ella’s grandfather told her, “If one chicken is different, the others peck (啄) it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
Ella picked up the chicken. She could feel its heart beating fast in its little body. “I want to take it home,” she said.
Ella told the cool kids about the chicken, “It’s looking healthier. It’s fatter and its feathers are growing.”
Then Ella saw Betty sitting by herself.
“I'm going to talk to Betty,” she said.
“Betty, Betty, long as spaghetti?” a kid said. “Why her?”
But Ella didn’t answer.
Ella found out that Betty could play the drums.
“I can play the guitar,” Ella said. “We should start a band.”
“That would be amazing!” said Betty. “What should we call it?”
“Chicken Beat,” said Ella.

“The game was almost over when I found you weren’t there. I thought you might like some company (陪伴).
“Company is the last thing I want. Can’t I have a little peace and quiet?”
James studied me for a minute. “It’s hard having such a big family, isn’t it?”
“Eliza’s always prying into my personal life. Yesterday I found her looking through my diary. Now everyone is in the living room watching the game. All I wanted to do was to watch a movie. But when I went to my room, Sara was there listening to the radio. I just want to be alone for a change.”
James sighed (叹气) and said, “I felt the same way when I was your age. But now...”
“Now you have your own room. After Daniel went off to college, you didn’t have to share the room.”
James smiled. “It is great to have my own room, but sometimes I really miss Daniel. We used to (曾经) talk about everything—sports, school, friends. Although sometimes it seemed crowded, it was comforting to have someone else there.”
“Yeah, ‘crowded’ is right!” I said.
“I know,” James said. “But there are some good things that come out of it—we share memories and jokes no one else understands, and we can support one another in the face of difficulties.”
I sighed.
“Didn’t Sara stay up half the night with you last week helping you with your homework?” James asked.
I admitted (承认) unwillingly, “Yeah, sometimes she is all right.”
“This place can be your ‘room’. Anytime you need peace and quiet, just come here.” James said, pointing at a stone.
