Lesson Objectives:
In this lesson, we will be able to:
1. Master words: rise, although, common. Grasp info about Mars/Earth
(diameter, temp, etc.)
2. Use target words/sentences to talk about future life on planets.
Read to complete planet comparison tables.
3. Report group choices of planets to visit. Draft a short essay comparing
two planets.
3
Pre-listening
Look at the information and guess where they are.
1. There is no ______ on Mars, so we have to produce some.
2. Mars is ________ than Earth.
3. The sun rises from __________.
4. At night, I can see ________ small moons in the sky.
5. Everyone has a ________ spacecraft to go around on Mars.
They are on Mars.
Free talk
Do you know anything about Mars?
What will happen on Mars in the future?
Let's listen to learn more.
Activity 1 A
While-listening Listen to the letter from Mars and complete the sentences.
1. There is no ____________ on Mars, so we have to produce some.

e.g. The sea level will rise as well. 海平线也会上升。
Please raise your hand before answering questions. 在回答问题前,请先举手。

Dear Xiaozhe,
How are you doing on Jupiter? I arrived on Mars with my parents last week. There is no air here, so we have to produce some by ourselves. Mars is colder than Earth and the Sun ______ from the east. There is a wonderful view of two small moons in the sky at night. There are ______ hours a day on Mars. Yesterday, I went to the National Park in Olympus Mons with my classmates. It’s one of the _________ mountains in the solar system. Everyone has a small spacecraft to get around on Mars. Last night, I was __________ my own spacecraft. Suppose you are Xiaozhe, what about your life on Jupiter ?
please write back to Kangkang and share something about Jupiter.
Dear Kangkang,
I’m so glad to hear from you! Life on Jupiter is different from what I thought! First, Jupiter’s days are only about 10 hours long (super short, right?). And the air here is thick, so we have to stay in sealed domes (no making our own air like you do!).
There are 79 moons (I can spot 3 or 4 bright ones at night), and the Great Red Spot (a huge storm) looks like a giant, swirling orange eye in the sky. Oh, and gravity here is strong—I feel twice as heavy as I did on Earth, so walking around feels like carrying a backpack full of books!
Yesterday, I visited a research station that studies Jupiter’s storms. We got to watch lightning flashes that are 100 times brighter than Earth’s—totally mind-blowing. Your Mars adventures sound cool too! I can’t wait to hear more about your National Park trip.
Looking forward to your next message!
Best,
Xiaozhe
Activity 2
Group work. Choose one planet your group wants to visit and list the reasons why you want to visit it, and then report to the class.
Mercury
∙ the smallest planet
in the solar system
∙ the closest planet
to the sun
Venus
∙ the second brightest
planet in the solar system
∙ the hottest planet
Activity 2
Report the group discussion to the class.
TIPS
You can use expressions like “Really?” “How interesting!” “Wow!”, etc. to show your attitide in conversation.
You may begin like this:
Our group wants to visit Mercury one day. It is the smallest planet in the solar system. And the closest planet to the sun. Our group and I will take
a rocket to get there. How cool is that! Though people there are very different from us, we get along well with the natives. This must be an unforgettable experience for us!

Earth and Its Neighbour —Mars
Is there life in outer space? We may think of the same planet— Mars.
Mars is smaller than Earth. It has a diameter of around 6,800 kilometers and Earth’s diameter is around 13,000 kilometers. Mars looks red because of its red soil, while most parts of Earth look blue because of its oceans. As a neighbor planet, Mars is farther from the Sun than Earth. Mars is about 228 million kilometers away from the Sun, while Earth is about 150 million kilometers away.
That’s why Mars is colder than Earth. The temperature on Mars is about minus 63℃; here The temperature is about 14℃ on average. Although the two planets have many differences, they have something in common — water. On Mars, there is a lot of ice under the ground; On earth, we have water both on and under the ground.

Earth and Its Neighbor — Venus
Among the eight planets, Venus is also Earth’s neighbor.
Venus is smaller than Earth. It has a diameter of around 12,104 kilometers and Earth’s diameter is around 13,000 kilometers. Venus is closer to the Sun than Earth, at a distance of about 108 million kilometers. So it is much hotter than Earth. And the average temperature on Venus is around 460℃. The temperature on Earth is neither too hot nor too cold. It is about 14℃
on average. There is much water on Earth while there is no water on Venus. So no living things can survive on Venus.
Now humans are still exploring the Venus to know more about it.
