Students at Sedro-Woolley High School in Washington State are abandoning the traditional woodshop projects for something a little more hands-on: Building tiny houses for their homeless neighbours. Students in the school’s Core Plus Construction class have been building the homes from the ground up in a partnership with the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) in Seattle.
LIHI is a homeless solutions nonprofit that has been building tiny house shelters since 2015, as a response to the homelessness crisis in Seattle and neighbouring cities. The student-assembled homes are placed in communities operated by LIHI, many of which are in the heart of Seattle. Individuals are then assigned to the temporary structures, with central facilities, like kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry services are available to share.
Tiny houses offer great benefits over tents — they are safe, weatherproof and lockable. They allow programme participants to reclaim their dignity and get on a path to permanent housing, employment and connection to supportive services.
But the benefits go beyond shelter. The hands-on project is a game-changer for students, who get to learn practical construction and problem-solving skills, as well as invaluable safety awareness.
One student, senior Kylin Chance has taken two years of welding (焊接) and is one of the two girls working on the home-building project.
“There’s always something to do, and it keeps me busy,” Chance said. “I’ve learned about different tools, like a hand plane and a handheld saw. They’re making me do a lot of the finishing work because I have a steadier hand. Plus, it’s much cooler than maths or history. It’s fun to hang out with friends and learn how to build houses.”
In total, 20 students in class work on the homes every day, building under the school’s stadium bleachers (看台). The homes are painted in royal blue and white — Sedro-Woolley’s colours — to bring a little school pride into Seattle.
4. Why did the students abandon traditional woodshop projects?
A. To focus on academic courses. B. To take up a charitable mission.
C. To save costs for the school district. D. To gain experience for future careers.
5. How do tiny houses improve the lives of homeless individuals?
A. By promoting their awareness of saving. B. By connecting them to high-paying jobs.
C. By restoring their dignity and normal life. D. By allowing them to buy their own homes.
6. What does Kylin Chance think of working with LIHI?
A. It’s stressful. B. It’s challenging. C. It’s profitable. D. It’s rewarding.
7. Why are the tiny houses painted royal blue and white?
A. To obey Seattle’s city regulations. B. To make the houses more appealing.
C. To express school spirit and identity. D. To attract corporate sponsors for the project.

What does “critical thinking” mean? Well, that depends on who you ask. For educators, as a term, critical thinking is similar to words like democracy, global, and organic: You hear people use them all the time, but no one seems to understand exactly what they mean.
Critical thinking is among the first causes for change (personal and social) but is a pariah in schools — for no other reason than it conditions the mind to suspect the form and function of everything it sees, including your classroom and everything being taught in it.
Of course, critical thinking without knowledge is embarrassingly empty, like a farmer without a field. They need each other — thought and knowledge. They can also disappear into one another as they work. Once we’ve established that — that they’re separate, capable of merging (融合), and need one another — we can get at the marrow (精华) and fear of this whole thing.
So what’s the definition of critical thinking? It depends on who you ask but most definitions are something close to this: Critical thinking is the suspension of judgment while identifying biases and underlying assumptions in order to draw accurate conclusions. Critical thinking is that mode of thinking — about any subject, content, or problem — in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it.
Critical thinking is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It is preconditioned by agreeing to strict standards of excellence and taking care to use those standards. It requires effective communication and problem-solving skills.
But more than definition and clarification, we need contextualization — to look around the term as we use it and see when and how it’s used, and what kind of reaction it causes when that happens. Here, there’s a lot to look at: how to teach it, how to assess it, what role it plays in the learning process, how to use it in misleading school mission statements, how to casually drop it in classroom walkthroughs or walkthrough documents.
8. What is critical thinking in the eyes of teachers?
A. A common concept. B. An education-only phrase.
C. A widely used unclear term. D. A term confusing students.
9. What does the underlined word “pariah” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Something dangerous. B. Something desirable.
C. Something essential. D. Something unpopular.
10. What is the foundation of critical thinking?
A. Knowledge. B. Technology. C. Productivity. D. Field.
11. Who is most likely to be the target audience for this article?
A. profession seekers. B. Course designers.
C. Thoughtful parents. D. Self-learning students.

People living in more disadvantaged neighbourhoods may be more likely to develop dementia (痴呆症) than people living in neighbourhoods with fewer disadvantages, according to a new study published. The study does not prove that neighbourhood factors cause dementia; it only shows an association. Neighbourhood status is determined by factors such as income, employment, education and disability.
“Our findings show that the community in which you live influences your risk of developing dementia,” said study author Pankaja Desai, PhD, of Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. “Most studies of risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症) focus on the individual level, not the community level. Of course, intervening at the community level is challenging, but prioritizing disadvantaged communities may be an effective way to mobilize resources for older adults and provide avenues (途径) for reducing the risk of dementia for the overall community.”
The study involved 6,781 people with an average age of 72 living in four communities in Chicago. Tests of thinking and memory skills were given at the beginning of the study and every three years for at least six years of follow-up. A group of 2,534 people were evaluated for dementia.
Researchers looked at US Census tracts (人口普查区) of the four neighbourhoods based on amount of disadvantage. By the end of the study, 11% of the people in the tracts with the least disadvantage had developed Alzheimer’s disease, compared to 14% in the tracts with the next lowest disadvantage, 17% in the tracts with next-to-highest amount of disadvantage and 22% in the tracts with the highest amount of disadvantage.
Once researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect the risk of dementia, such as age, sex and education, they found that people in the tracts with the most disadvantage were more than twice as likely to develop dementia as those in the tracts with the least disadvantage.
A limitation of the study was that participants all lived in Chicago neighbourhoods, so the results may not apply to other populations.
12. What does the study primarily indicate about neighbourhood disadvantages?
A. They only affect individuals under 70. B. They may increase the risk of dementia.
C. They have no impact on cognitive health. D. They directly cause Alzheimer’s disease.
13. How does the author present the findings?
A. By raising a question. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By giving an example. D. By listing some figures.
14. What are researchers most likely to do in the next stage?
A. Expand the study to other regions. B. Make their findings known to more.
C. Target individual-level interventions. D. Focus on genetic factors in dementia risk.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Dementia Rates Vary Across Different Cities
B. Factors Causing Dementia Identified in a New Study
C Neighbourhood Disadvantages Linked to Dementia Risk
D. Community-Level Interventions for Dementia Prevention

As a special needs mum, I take my son with autism (自闭症) everywhere I go, and I also bring my energetic daughter along. With my son’s occasional repetitive sounds and my daughter’s excited chatter, the little two can get quite loud in public. I’ve grown used to the curious glances and whispered comments — those small, unspoken judgments that make me feel like an outsider sometimes. But nothing prepared me for the rudeness I encountered at a Trader Joe’s last month.
I’d stopped by the store after a chaotic morning of therapy (治疗) appointments, hoping to grab groceries quickly. The cashier barely looked up as she scanned my items, slamming (用力一放) my bread onto the conveyor belt and sighing loudly when I fished for my wallet. “Hurry up, please,” she urged impatiently in a low voice. Shocked, I left the store with my kids, keeping asking myself, “What did I do to deserve such treatment?”
After a while of reflection, I realized that the cashier was probably having an exceptionally bad day, and I just happened to be the unfortunate one she let it out on. Instead of letting this single negative experience sour my opinion of the entire grocery chain, I decided to give it another shot. So, I ventured to a different Trader Joe’s location on the opposite side of town.
As soon as I stepped inside, I realized I was completely unfamiliar with the store’s layout. I approached an employee and asked for assistance. Before I could even fully explain my situation, the employee greeted us with a warm smile and an incredibly kind manner. I couldn’t help but open up about my previous bad experience at the other store.
The employee listened attentively and then reassured me, “This is your new store. We’ll make sure you have a great experience here, no matter what.” They even took the time to show me where they kept their delicious coffee, as if to say, “Let’s start this new shopping journey on a positive note.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. C

A profession seekers. B. Course designers.
C. Thoughtful parents. D. Self-learning students.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. B

C. Neighbourhood Disadvantages Linked to Dementia Risk
D. Community-Level Interventions for Dementia Prevention
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“By the end of the study, 11% of the people in the tracts with the least disadvantage had developed Alzheimer’s disease, compared to 14% in the tracts with the next lowest disadvantage, 17% in the tracts with next-to-highest amount of disadvantage and 22% in the tracts with the highest amount of disadvantage. (到研究结束时,居住在劣势程度最低区域的人中有11%患上了阿尔茨海默症,劣势程度第二低的区域这一比例为14%,劣势程度第二高的区域为17%,劣势程度最高的区域为22%。)”可知,作者是通过列举一系列数据来呈现研究结果的。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中的“A limitation of the study was that participants all lived in Chicago neighbourhoods, so the results may not apply to other populations. (这项研究的一个局限性是参与者都居住在芝加哥的社区,因此研究结果可能不适用于其他人群。)”可知,研究样本存在地域局限性,由此推测研,究人员下一步最有可能将研究范围扩展到其他地区。故选A项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“People living in more disadvantaged neighbourhoods may be more likely to develop dementia than people living in neighbourhoods with fewer disadvantages, according to a new study published. The study does not prove that neighbourhood factors cause dementia; it only shows an association.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
When I finally reached the register, the staff assisting me stepped away for a moment. Then he returned with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I stood there, a bit puzzled, wondering what was going on. He handed me the flowers, saying, “This is from our team. We hope it can brighten your day and make up for the bad experience you had before.” I looked around at the other employees, and they were all smiling at me, their eyes full of warmth and sincerity. It was as if they were telling me with their actions that they cared about me.
Holding the flowers, all my previous unhappiness faded away. The flowers were so fresh and colourful, with a sweet fragrance that filled the air around me. All the frustration and disappointment were replaced by a sense of gratitude and joy. This small act of kindness reminded me that there are still good-hearted people in the world who are willing to go out of their way to make others feel better. From that day on, I knew that this Trader Joe’s would be my new go-to store, and I would always remember the kindness shown to me by these wonderful employees.
