Katherine Johnson, a hero to American space travel and exploration, was born on Aug. 26, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Her genius for math and science was evident early and her parents arranged for her and her siblings’ education to be a priority.
Katherine graduated from high school at only 14 and attended West Virginia State College, a historically Black college. When West Virginia decided to quietly integrate its graduate schools in 1939, West Virginia State’s president, Dr. John W. Davis, selected her and two men to be the first Black students offered spots at the state’s flagship school, West Virginia University.
In 1953, in a time of racial separation, she started a job as a human “computer” with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later developed into NASA. She worked in the West Area Computing section at Langley Research Center on a team headed by fellow West Virginian Dorothy Vaughan. This turned into a permanent position and set the course for Katherine’s role in space exploration.
In 1960, she and engineer Ted Skopinski coauthored Determination of Azimuth Angle at Burnout for Placing a Satellite Over a Selected Earth Position, a report laying out the equations (方程式) describing an orbital spaceflight in which the landing position of the spacecraft is specified. It was the first time a woman in the Flight Research Division had received credit as an author of a research report.
Her expertise was key to John Glenn’s orbit around Earth in 1962, with Glenn putting much of his confidence in Katherine to make the mission a success. As a part of the preflight checklist, Glenn asked engineers to “get the girl”— Johnson—to run the same numbers through the same equations that had been programmed into the computer, but by hand, on her desktop mechanical calculating machine. “If she says they’re good,” Katherine Johnson remembered the astronaut saying, “then I’m ready to go.”
24. What can we learn about Katherine Johnson’s life experience?
A. Her parents attached great importance to her education.
B. She was the only Black student to enter West Virginia University in 1939.
C. She took the lead of the West Area Computing section.
D. She joined the NACA organization after NASA had been founded.
25. Why does the writer quote John Glenn’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To explain Johnson’s hand calculation was tough.
B. To highlight John Glenn was a strict mission leader.
C. To prove Johnson’s hand calculations were reliable.
D. To illustrate the computer’s data was not trustworthy.
26. Which of the following can best describe Katherine Johnson?
A. Modest and sociable. B. Talented and diligent.
C. Stubborn and hardworking. D. Considerate and cooperative.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Katherine Johnson: A Lifetime of Educational Pursuits

For coffee lovers, the future is shaping up to be bitter and expensive, as climate change roasts the world’s key growing regions. Farmers have to dig deeper to get water.
Tougher growing conditions have led Vietnamese farmers to question the value of coffee as a cash crop, with some pulling out their trees to plant black pepper and other tropical fruits. Reduced supply has already pushed the Robusta (coffee) price in 2024 to the highest level since at least 2008 — and still, rising temperatures mean future production will fall short.
Regions suitable for crop production reduce globally primarily due to increased heat.Hardier varieties are expected to fare better, and for coffee that means strong, earthy Robusta. Researchers found that it would be necessary to adapt, including by replacing Arabica (coffee) with harder Robusta. However, Robusta is not a silver bullet for climate change. Researchers are still learning Robusta’s limits though it’s more tolerant to heat and to some diseases and pests.
Prolonged dry periods in Vietnam and lack of irrigation water in recent years have already severely affected the productivity of Robusta coffee farms in the Central Highlands, according to a study published in 2021. In an October report, World Coffee Research (WCR) said the world may face Robusta shortages in 2040 of as much as 35 million bags when taking into account rising consumption trends and the impact of climate change on production. The world currently produces close to 80 million bags of Robusta a year.
Farmers are seeing the benefit of more sustainable farming practices. Farmers have cut back on chemical fertilisers and provided shade for coffee shrubs (灌木) so they’re less exposed to the burning sun. They have also planted black pepper to diversify. When applying this, they have more income, and they can save a lot of labour. Lien, who began planting coffee nearly thirty years ago, said, “Now I see my coffee better developed, with better yields.”
28. What troubles farmers most when planting coffee?
A. Lower price and less labour.
B. Poor quality with bitter flavor.
C. Heat pressure and water shortages
D. Reduced productivity of coffee.
29. What does the phrase “silver bullet” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Essential alternative.
B. Effective solution.
C. Secure mode.
D. Scientific conclusion.
30. What’s the author’s attitude towards the farming practices?
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Opposed.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Dry periods affect the productivity of Robusta coffee farms.
B. Robusta coffee price will stabilize soon.
C. Vietnamse farmers are abandoning coffee farming.
D. Sustainable farming is becoming popular.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. B 31. D

Farming is undergoing a remarkable transformation thanks to cutting-edge technologies reshaping how fruit is picked and handled. While autonomous drones (无人机) like Tevel’s Flying Robots are already harvesting fruit globally, innovations like UC San Diego’s GRIP-tape gripper represent the next frontier in gentle produce handling. Together, these advancements promise to make fruit production more efficient and precise, though one is a proven solution and the other is a glimpse into farming’s future.
Tevel’s Flying Autonomous Robots (FARs) are redefining fruit harvesting by combining artificial intelligence with advanced computer vision. These drones navigate through orchards (果园), identifying and picking only the fruit that has reached peak ripeness. Their ability to weave carefully around branches allows them to harvest without bruising or harming the trees. Unlike human pickers, these drones can operate continuously, working day and night to get the job done faster and more consistently.
Farmers are empowered by detailed, real-time information about the harvest, including the size, color and ripeness of each fruit, all accessible through a mobile app. This data helps improve harvesting schedules and reduce waste. Multiple drones work together from a mobile platform, covering large orchard areas efficiently.
Beyond picking, these robots also detect diseases and track the location of each fruit bin, providing farmers with valuable insights to manage their crops better.
While Tevel’s drones tackle harvesting, UC San Diego’s GRIP-tape gripper remains in the experimental stage as a solution for post-harvest handling. Inspired by steel measuring tapes, this prototype (原型) uses layered “fingers” to grasp delicate fruits gently. Early tests show promise in handling objects like lemons and tomatoes without damage, but it has yet to be widely adopted in farming.
The gripper’s motorized reels (卷轴) allow its tape-based fingers to extend and convey items like a conveyor belt. Researchers highlight its low cost and safety around humans, but further development is needed to integrate it into commercial packing lines or harvesters.
Tevel’s drones are already transforming orchards, while the GRIP-tape gripper offers a vision of how delicate produce handling could evolve. The combination of real-world automation and experimental robotics highlights both the immediate benefits and long-term potential of agritech innovation.
32. What do we know about FARs?
A. They can work around the clock. B. They can identify different fruits.
C. They redefine the artificial intelligence. D. They perform as efficiently as human workers.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The real-time data collected by mobile apps.
B. The advantages of Tevel’s drones for farmers.
C. The working process of multiple drones in orchards.
D. The various attitudes of the farmers to Tevel’s drones.
34. What can be inferred about UC San Diego’s GRIP-tape gripper?
A. It is inspired by human fingers. B. It is widely adopted in farming.
C. It tackles the harvesting process. D. It is cost-effective but still in progress.
35. What’s the writing purpose of this text?
A. To promote the use of robotics in farming.
B. To compare two cutting-edge farming tools.
C. To introduce two innovative agricultural technologies.
D To emphasize the long-term potential of autonomous drones.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. C

When it comes to the future community, different people have different ideas. Below is what it is like in my mind.
The first thing that comes into my mind is the clean environment and the harmonious atmosphere. Intelligent garbage bins have taken the place of common ones, which can not only classify the rubbish by themselves but recycle the waste. The community will become a shared garden where neighbors manage it together — kids will help water plants, and elders will teach us gardening tricks.
This warm future needs everyone’s effort. Let’s start small: plant a flower and help the old. Together, we can turn this vision into reality!

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sheldon Cooper, a nine-year-old boy with a great mind, found himself in a difficult situation. His favorite scientific tool had broken, and replacing it required a large amount of money. His mother politely said, “If you want it, you will have to earn it yourself.” So, Sheldon started what he called “The Money Project” — using science to do the everyday job of delivering newspapers.
As he had planned, Sheldon’s method was special. He spent days doing research. He studied the weight of the newspaper, planned the best delivery route using maps, and even found the best throwing angle for each house. His planning board was covered in notes and drawings, looking more like a complex puzzle than a simple job plan.
On his first Monday, he left home with his prepared basket. The first challenge appeared immediately: the family bicycle was too large for him. After three failed attempts to ride it, he decided to walk, pulling the basket of newspapers behind him. But the basket was so heavy that he soon felt too tired to continue. He quickly thought of a solution. Using an old board, four wheels from broken toys, and some rope, he built a simple homemade cart. Now he could pull the papers easily.
Then, the weather, Sheldon had assumed clear weather, turned out different from his forecasts. A light rain began to fall. Sheldon immediately covered the newspaper basket with the plastic he had prepared. This simple action prevented what could have been a real problem.
Despite these little episodes (小插曲), his first deliveries were perfect, and he felt pleased. The final challenge came at 17th Elm Street. His goal was the welcome mat, but a large, sleeping dog was lying right on top of it. Sheldon knew getting closer was too dangerous. From where he stood, he could not throw the paper properly. He stood still, his carefully made plan falling apart before this unexpected problem.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After a moment of panic, Sheldon’s scientific mind took over.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Weeks later, “The Money Project” finally paid off.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
After a moment of panic, Sheldon’s scientific mind took over. Noticing the low fence beside the steps, he quickly calculated the distance and the required throwing angle. He rolled the newspaper into a tight tube. With a precise underhand throw, he sent the paper sliding smoothly along the fence. It traveled in a perfect bend around the sleeping dog and came to rest right at the front door. A small smile appeared on his face as he continued his route, the crisis expertly solved through physics.
Weeks later, “The Money Project” finally paid off. Sheldon placed his carefully saved money on the counter, receiving the long-wanted scientific tool. His mother’s eyes met his, shining with pride. As he held the tool, happiness filled him — not just for having it, but for earning it. This experience brought him a greater prize: strong belief in his own mind and the knowledge that some fortunes are earned not with money, but with effort and intellect. This was the real treasure, one that would only grow with time.

B. The Story of a “Computer”: Katherine Johnson’s Early Life at NASA
C. Katherine Johnson: A Pioneering Force in Space Exploration
D. Mathematics: The Key to John Glenn’s Historic Space Flight

D
Farming is undergoing a remarkable transformation thanks to cutting-edge technologies reshaping how fruit is picked and handled. While autonomous drones (无人机) like Tevel’s Flying Robots are already harvesting fruit globally innovations like UC San Diego’s GRIP-tape gripper represent the next frontier in gentle produce handling.
A The real-time data collected by mobile apps.
D. To emphasize the long-term potential of autonomous drones.

Reducing food waste is crucial. Studies show that about one third of the world's food is wasted every year, enough to feed millions of . ungry people. Where does most food waste happen? It's a mix. In developed countries, much waste comes from households throwing away leftovers. In developing countries, poor storage and transportation systems cause a lot of food to spoil. What can individuals do to help? They should plan meals before shopping to buy only what they need, and learn to use leftovers creatively, like making soups from vegetable scraps. And what about governments? Governments can invest in Better storage facilities and improve transportation networks to reduce spoil edge during distribution. They can also launch campaigns to raise awareness about food waste. Listen to the next question. Hello everyone, welcome to today's pioneering figure. I'm your friend john.
