Most moms in China help their kids with homework—about 68 out of 100 moms do this. However, both dads and moms play important roles in their children’s education. “Dads can shape young kids’ personalities,” said Luo Xuepeng, a father from Guangdong with a 9-year-old son. “A wise and strong dad can help children have good habits and become happier.” Why don’t dads go to school meetings? They say: ●I’m really busy with work and can’t take time off. ●I’m not good at talking with teachers and I may miss something important. My wife is better at it. ●Traditionally, dads just make some money. Going to school meetings feels like more of a mom’s job. ●Sometimes I just like to relax and be a lazy dad. If Fogg lost the bet, he would lose half of his money. Fogg set off on his journey with his new servant named Passepartout. However, unknown to them, the two were being followed by Detective Fix of Scotland Yard. He believed Fogg was a thief who had stolen money from a bank. After leaving Egypt and arriving in India, the two found a woman in danger. They saved her and took her along on their journey-her name was Aouda. The three travellers made their way through China, Japan and America, facing many difficulties along the way. Some of them were created by Fix, who didn’t give up his pursuit (追捕) of Fogg. We sat down and waited at a restaurant. After a while, the dishes started coming one by one. After finishing all the dishes, I found it hard to eat any more. Then, the ice cream cake came to the table. At that moment, I felt lighter and enjoyed the delicious cake. But wait, why do I have space for it? To answer the question, let’s think about two other ones first. What’s your favourite food? And would you like to eat it every day? Imagine (想象) that you could keep eating your favourite food for two days. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Now, let’s have the food for five days, and then ten days. You may not want to eat it any more. It’s not surprising—the cold weather makes us not want to leave warm beds. But what else makes it so hard to get up in winter? Another big reason is not having enough sunlight. Some hormones (激素) in our body affect (影响) our sleep. For example, melatonin (褪黑素) makes us sleepy, while cortisol (皮质醇) makes us feel awake. Sunlight helps us wake up by producing (产生) less melatonin and more cortisol. In winter, the sun gets up later and there are fewer hours of daylight, so it is harder for us to wake up. Also, our habits may change when the days are colder and darker. We may eat less fruit and vegetables, enjoy more sweet food, and not exercise as much. These changes can make us have less energy and make it even harder to get up early. These tips may help you get up in winter: ●Set a sunrise alarm clock (闹钟). These clocks slowly light up your room like the sun. This can help wake up your body when the alarm clock rings. ●Put your alarm clock far from your bed so that you have to get up to turn it off. ●Set your heat (暖气) on before you wake up. This will make your room warm and comfortable when you get out of bed. ●Keep a glass of water by your bed and drink it when you wake up. It will help your body feel more awake and ready to move. 1.According to the article, it is hard to get up in winter for ________ reasons. A.two B.three C.four D.five 2.Which chart best shows how melatonin and cortisol are produced in different seasons? A. B. C. D. 3.According to the article, how do people probably (可能) change their habits in winter? A.Eat less fruit and meat. B.Enjoy more sweet food. C.Do the same exercise. D.Have more vegetables. 4.Which of the following can help get up in winter? A.Keep your room light on all the time. B.Put your alarm clock near your bed. C.Turn on the heat after you wake up. D.Drink some water when you wake up. 【答案】1.B 2.A 3.B 4.D 【导语】本文讲述了冬季早晨起床困难的原因以及一些有助于在冬季起床的建议。 1.细节理解题。根据“It’s not surprising—the cold weather makes us not want to leave warm beds…Another big reason is not having enough sunlight…Also, our habits may change when the days are colder and darker.”可知文章指出冬天难以起床的原因有三个:一是天气寒冷,二是缺乏阳光,三是生活习惯的改变。故选B。 2.推理判断题。根据“For example, melatonin (褪黑素) makes us sleepy, while cortisol (皮质醇) makes us feel awake. The berry’s color is not “true blue”. It just looks blue to our eyes because of a waxy coating (蜡质涂层). If you rub this coating off (擦掉), the blueberry will not look blue. In fact, it’s dark, says scientist Rox Middleton. ②Blue is not a usual color in nature. Less than one in ten plants are blue. Why? To answer this question, we should know the fact—there is no true blue pigment (色素) in nature. ③So how does the blueberry do it? First, the berry’s skin has a lot of anthocyanin. This kind of pigment can look blue sometimes, but in blueberries, it looks dark red. Second, Rox’s team looks at the blueberry’s skin under a microscope (显微镜). What do they find? The wax (蜡) on the skin has lots of small parts. Each part is as thick as a piece of paper. These parts send back blue light. That’s why the fruit looks blue to us. ④The team of scientists hope to make materials to mimic (模仿) the waxy coating of blueberries. “This kind of colouring is cool because it is hard to wash away and you don’t need to worry about it getting onto other colours of clothes.” 1.When we rub off the waxy coating of a blueberry, the berry will look _________. Sometimes, you may hear people talk about landform and landscape. Are they the same thing? Let’s find out! A landform is a natural feature of the Earth’s surface. Think of big mountains that rise high up, low valleys (山谷) between hills, flat plains that go on and on, and sandy deserts. These are all landforms. They are made by nature over a long, long time. For example, mountains are formed when huge pieces of the Earth’s surface push against (撞) each other. Valleys can be made by rivers cutting through the land little by little. Each landform has a name that tells us what it looks like and how it was formed. Scientists study landforms to learn about the history of the Earth. A landscape, on the other hand, is what you see when you look at an area of land. It includes (包括) landforms, but it also has other things like plants, buildings, and lakes. Imagine standing on top of a hill. You can see green trees waving in the wind, a small village with houses, and a clear lake nearby. All these things together make up the landscape. A landscape can change rapidly. If people build new buildings or cut down a lot of trees, the landscape will look different in just a few months. Let’s take a forest in the mountains as an example. The mountain is the landform — it’s a natural feature of the Earth. But when you see the tall trees, hear the birds singing, and watch a little stream (溪流) running down the mountain, that’s the landscape. So, the key difference is this: landform is about the natural shapes of the Earth, and landscape is about the whole view of an area, including both natural and man-made things. Next time you go on a trip, try to enjoy different landforms and describe (描述) the beautiful landscapes around you! 1.Which of the following is a landform? A.A newly-built bridge. B.A flat plain. C.A group of trees. D.A small house. 2.What can we learn from the text about how mountains are formed? A.They are made by people building up the land. Some people would put their fu character upside down. ④ Lu often has something to do with one’s job and richness. Lu means good pay and ranks (等级) in ancient China. Hulu, gourds (葫芦) , sounds like hulu (护禄). So, people use gourds to scare away bad spirits and illnesses and keep rich and successful. ⑤ Shou means long-lived life. People write Spring Festival Couplets with black or golden characters (汉字) on red paper. They have a pair of lines pasted (粘贴) on each side of the front door. Pasting couplets shows people’s happiness in the festival and wishes for a better life in the coming year. In a pair of Spring Festival Couplets, the first line (upper scroll) and the second line (lower scroll) have the same number of characters, and their meanings are related and antithetical (相关对仗). Passage 2 ①What colour are blueberries? Blue, of course! But guess what? A.dark B.red C.blue D.purple 2.According to the article, less than _________ percent of plants in nature are blue. A.one B.two C.five D.ten 3.Why is blue an unusual color in nature? D.Because it is hard for plants to make blue pigments. 4.The word “anthocyanin” in paragraph ③ is a kind of _______. A.pigment B.fruit C.berry D.paper 5.What can we infer (推测) from paragraph ④? A.People like to mix different colours together. B.Some special features of things can bring good ideas. C.Making new materials is a very easy thing for scientists. D.People don’t like blueberries because it’s not a “true blue”. Passage 3 It’s so cold outside! You may want a warm shower (淋浴). However, there are a few dos and don’ts. Let’s take a look! Dos Don’ts Drink 500 ml of water in an hour before taking a shower. Wash after a meal. If you shower while being hungry, you may have low blood sugar. Keep warm during the shower. You can use a heater to warm the room around 25℃. And dry your hair if you need to. Don’t use very hot water. You may feel dizzy (头晕的). You should keep the water temperature below (低于) 40℃. Don’t take a shower right after coming home. You should rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour. A quick change in body temperature could bring heart problems. How often and how long? ·Two to three times a week. ·Shower for 5 to 15 minutes. In winter, your skin can be very dry because of the cold weather. Having showers too often can be bad for your skin. 1.What can you learn from the passage? A.Washing before a meal can cause high blood sugar. B.We should drink some water before the shower. They brighten up the sky and dim down the stars. Scientist Christopher Kyba and his team found that the sky is getting brighter. And it’s happening faster than they thought. That is to say, people are seeing fewer stars now. Kyba and his team got help from some helpers. The helpers looked up at the night sky and sent their reports to Kyba. He read more than 50,000 reports from 2011 to 2022 with his team. “Each year, people are saying they can see fewer stars,” Kyba said. “The night sky is getting 10% brighter each year.” Kyba was shocked and worried. The bright sky makes it hard for scientists to study space (太空). And it also makes it hard for animals that do activities at night. However, the good news is that we can help! One easy way is to turn off lights when we don’t use them. We can add covers to outdoor lights so as to point the light down to the ground. Also, using a warm or red light is better for the night sky. These small changes can help us see more stars! 1.The underlined phrase “dim down” in paragraph 1 shows the stars are ________. A.getting smaller B.getting darker C.becoming brighter D.becoming nicer 2.How did Kyba and his team do their research (研究)? A.By using AI for surveys. B.By getting over the light pollution. B.They are formed when rivers cut through the land. C.They are formed when the Earth’s plates push into each other. D.They are formed by heavy rain and strong winds. 3.What does the underlined word “rapidly” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Brightly. B.Quickly. C.Powerfully. D.Quietly. 4.What does “landscape” usually include? A.Only landforms. B.Only natural things. C.Just man-made things. D.Landforms, trees, houses and lakes. 5.How does the writer explain the difference between landform and landscape? A.By telling stories. B.By listing numbers. C.By giving examples. D.By asking questions. 话题6 中华文化 Passage 1 Every year, people in Mouding County (县), Yunnan Province become busy as the coming of the Dragon Boat Festival. In a pair of Spring Festival Couplets, the first line (upper scroll) and the second line (lower scroll) have the same number of characters, and their meanings are related and antithetical (相关对仗). The horizontal scroll is a four-character phrase. It covers the two lines’ meanings. Reading Spring Festival Couplets is interesting. Here is the way: First, look at the horizontal scroll. If the four characters are from left to right, the upper scroll will be on the left and the lower scroll on the right. If the characters of the horizontal scroll are reversed (相反的), we read them from right to left. Spring Festival Couplets start from Taofu, some words on peach boards (木板), in the Zhou Dynasty. At that time, people believe that peach trees can stop bad things, so they put peach boards in front of the doors with words on them. During the Song Dynasty, the board is replaced (替代) by paper. The illustrator (插画师) Lu Mei, is also a qipao lover, making paintings of a woman in qipao for years. Her book Cheongsam with beautiful illustrations tells how the style of the dress changes in the past 100 years. Lu Mei has been interested in qipao since she read a book by the famous writer Zhang Ailing (1920-1995). In 2007, when she was asked to draw the illustrations for a book by Zhang Ailing and the clothes in the book, Lu agreed and started her study on the dress.
