We had an important math exam then. I’m much worse at math than him, and I was really worried because I didn’t review a lot. After class, I sat quietly at my desk. He came over and said, “Don’t worry. I’ll help you practice every day after school.” For a whole week, he spent 30 minutes with me, and he had his own homework. With his help, I got a much better grade than before.

Our personalities are just as different: Mei is outgoing and loves being the center of attention—she’s the star of our school’s drama club and never gets nervous speaking in front of crowds. I, on the other hand, am quiet and prefer one-on-one conversations. I’d rather read a book in the library than go to a loud party.
But despite these differences, we have a lot in common. We both love animals—Mei has a pet rabbit named Snowball, and I have a dog called Max—and we often volunteer at the local animal shelter on weekends. We’re also both passionate about environmental protection; last month, we organized a school clean-up day together. Academically, we balance each other out: Mei is excellent at math and helps me with equations, while I’m better at English and help her write essays.
What I love most about our friendship is that Mei encourages me to step out of my comfort zone—like when she convinced me to join the school newspaper—and I help her slow down and appreciate quiet moments. Our differences don’t divide us; they make our friendship special.

Passage 3
Blood flow (血流) to the brain is very important for thinking and memory. The brain carefully controls this flow, but small changes can still happen. Short-term drops in blood flow can make thinking and memory worse for a short time. Long-term drops might increase the risk of developing dementia. Sitting for a long time can reduce blood flow to the legs, but it was not clear whether it affects (影响) blood flow to the brain or not.
To find out, researchers at Oxford University in England did a new study with 15 healthy adult office workers. The workers wore special headbands to measure blood flow to the brain. Over four hours, they did three different activities: in one, they sat the whole time except for bathroom breaks; in another, they walked on a treadmill (跑步机) for two minutes every half-hour; and in the last one, they walked for eight minutes after sitting for two hours. This helped the researchers see how blood flow changed in different situations.
The results showed that sitting for long periods can reduce blood flow to the brain, which may affect long-term brain health. However, taking a two-minute walk every half-hour can help maintain (维持) or even increase brain blood flow.
The study also found that changes in blood flow were not caused by carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) levels or breathing, which stayed the same. This means that sitting and moving affect blood flow in other ways.
So something else about sitting and moving was changing how blood got to the brain. The study also showed that breaks can be short but should be taken often. Your brain might thank you years later when you’re not sitting in an office chair all the time.
1. What does the underlined word “dementia” probably mean?
A.A method to improve blood flow. B.A tool used to record blood flow.

A.Exactly one hour. B.Less than two hours. C.Three and a half hours. D.More than four hours.
3. According to the study, what activity helped maintain or even increase brain blood flow?
A.Taking short bathroom breaks every two hours.
B.Staying in one place for four hours without moving.
C.Walking for eight minutes after sitting for two hours.
D.Walking on a treadmill for two minutes every half-hour.
4. What does the writer mainly tell us?

B.Long-term sitting can cut down blood flow to the brain.
C.Short-term drops in blood flow can affect brain function.
D.Brain health depends on breathing and carbon dioxide levels.
5. What is the topic of the text?

Do you like playing sports? The weather can change how much fun we have when we play outside. Let’s learn about sports and different weather!
On sunny days, many students love to play soccer or basketball on the playground. The bright sun makes everything warm and clear. You can see the ball very well, and it’s perfect for running fast. Just remember to wear a hat and sunscreen (防晒霜) to protect your skin.

You can make a snowman, go sledding, or try skiing if you live near the mountains. Don’t forget to wear thick coats and gloves to stay warm.

Passage 1
Do you want to play a fun game at home? You can make your own escape room (密室逃脱). It’s cool! You and your friends work together to “get out” of a room before time’s up. It’s easy, and here’s how to do that.
First, pick an interesting theme (主题). It can be about a sports game, or a time travel with a nice gift in the end. A theme makes the game really exciting. And you know what things to get before the game. For example, you can use things about the theme-pictures, posters, or everyday things like hats and lights—to make the room feel real.
Second, writing a short and fun story is also important. You can read it at the start. For example: “You’re great men. But now you’re in a large forest. Finish the tasks (任务) to get out before 8 o’clock!” It must be very fun. Then, make small tasks to help players get out of the room. You can use a riddle (谜语) like: “I have four legs but I don’t walk. You can sit on me to talk.” The answer is a chair. Put a clue in a drawer. That can help players find a key to a box. Inside the box is the next clue! You can even put a gift in the end, like pens or candies. You will be happy to win.
Before you play the game, let your parents try first. They can help make sure everything works. Then, ask your friends to come, set a timer, and let the fun begin!
Does this sound fun? Give it a try and enjoy the game with your family and friends.

Passage 1
Last Friday evening, I came home from school, threw my bag on the sofa and turned on the TV. Just then, Mom asked me to help wash the dishes. “I’m tired. Let me watch TV first.” I shouted. Mom’s smile went away. She said, “I work all day and do housework every night. Can’t you share a little?” We talked loudly, and I ran to my room angrily.
Later, I heard Mom cleaning the living room—she was moving the chair to clean the floor, and I could hear her tired breaths through the door. I looked out quietly and saw her touch her shoulders now and then while cleaning the table. Her hair was a little untidy, and her face looked really tired. I suddenly thought: Mom gets up earlier than I to make breakfast, and after work, she still has to cook and clean. I only study, but I’m always too lazy to help. That’s when I felt really sorry. I walked out, picked up a cloth and said, “Mom, I’m sorry. Let me help.” Mom looked surprised, then smiled.

Two Friends, One Friendship
Mei and I have been best friends since we were in third grade. Even though we’re as different as night and day, our friendship has only grown stronger over the years.
Physically, we look nothing alike. Mei is tall and thin with straight black hair that falls past her shoulders, while I’m shorter and have curly brown hair that I usually wear in a ponytail.

C.An illness harming memory and thinking. D.A common form of daily physical activity.
2. How many hours were the office workers required to spend in the study?
A.Exactly one hour. B.Less than two hours. C.Three and a half hours. D.More than four hours.
3. According to the study, what activity helped maintain or even increase brain blood flow?
A.Taking short bathroom breaks every two hours.
B.Staying in one place for four hours without moving.
C.Walking for eight minutes after sitting for two hours.
D.Walking on a treadmill for two minutes every half-hour.
4. What does the writer mainly tell us?
A.Walking regularly can improve long-term brain health.
B.Long-term sitting can cut down blood flow to the brain.
C.Short-term drops in blood flow can affect brain function.
D.Brain health depends on breathing and carbon dioxide levels.
5. What is the topic of the text?

And you know what things to get before the game. For example, you can use things about the theme-pictures, posters, or everyday things like hats and lights—to make the room feel real.

Inside the box is the next clue! You can even put a gift in the end, like pens or candies. You will be happy to win.

People have many traditions for this festival. Climbing mountains is a key activity. On that day, families often climb hills to enjoy fresh air and autumn views. It also comes from an old story where climbing helped stop illness. Eating Chongyang Cake is another custom. The cake’s name sounds like “high” in Chinese, carrying wishes for progress.
Today, the Double Ninth Festival is also known as the Senior Citizens’ Festival. It is a day to show respect and care for the elderly. People visit their older family members, help them, and wish them good health and happiness.
This festival connects traditions with love for the elderly, making it a warm and meaningful day.
