Most people nowadays wear sneakers(运动鞋), leather(皮革)shoes or boots(靴子).
But in ancient China, many people made their own cloth shoes.
Tangchang, a town in Sichuan province, is quite famous for its cloth shoes. The town has 700 years of shoemaking history. Tangchang cloth shoes are made from natural materials such as flour (面粉), cotton, cloth and wool which are more comfortable than those with plastic soles(鞋底)in the market and they are easy to walk in and they don’t get wet easily.
But the process of making cloth shoes is not easy. Growing up in Tangchang, Lai Shufang is a master of making cloth shoes. The 69-year-old woman has been making shoes for over 40 years. She said that there are 32 steps that go into the production of the shoes. The most important step is making the soles. Layers(层)of white cloth are glued together with paste(面糊)made from flour.
“To make the proper paste, we have to keep the hot water at an exact temperature of 85℃. If it’s too low or too high, the paste will fail,” Lai said. After this, the layered cloth is beaten again and again until it is tight enough to make soles, as well as the upper parts of the shoes.
Over the time, sneakers began to gain more popularity among consumers(消费者). Fewer and fewer people choose cloth shoes. To make a living and help the cultural heritage(遗产) alive, Lai and her co-workers added Shu embroidery(刺绣)to make the shoes more fashionable. Passage 3
Usually, when we talk about reading, we think of using our eyes to see letters written in ink on paper. However, this is not always true. For example, blind people cannot see, but they can still read books.
The man who introduced blind people to reading was Louis Braille. Braille lost his eyesight at the age of three. When he was ten, he went to a school for the blind in Paris. In those days, books for blind people used paper pressed against metal wire to form letters. Since the metal wire was heavy, each book weighed as much as 100 pounds. Indeed, the school library only had fourteen such books in it.
In 1821, a soldier(士兵)visited the school and showed the students a system (系统)for passing messages at night. His system used paper with small, raised dots that could be felt with the fingers. Each letter of the alphabet was symbolized by a different pattern which consisted of twelve dots. The soldiers would pull their fingers over the raised dots to read the message.
While the students found the soldier’s idea interesting, the system was too difficult to be of practical use. However, young Louis Braille took the idea and worked on it. At the age of fifteen, he created a system with patterns of six raised dots symbolizing each letter. “Braille”, the system for reading used today by blind people around the world, was thus born.
The blind can easily recognize(辨别)Braille with their fingers. They can also easily write in Braille with a special typewriter. Today, it is the most common system used by blind people for reading and writing, and nearly every language, including Chinese, has its own version(版本)of Braille for its people to use.

Early on, something was missing, and later would be found somewhere else. I just thought I had forgotten where I put it, or perhaps my daughter was playing around with things. Then later on I would hear strange sounds when nobody was at home but me...Yet it was an old house, and sometimes old houses did make small noises. So again, I didn’t really mind.
Then things that I couldn’t explain started happening. It was last November and I was at home alone cleaning the house. When I was sweeping the kitchen floor, I felt a very cold wind blow my hair. Passage 5
Huge Waves Destroying Arctic Ice Faster than Expected
Ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean. Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased , however, some of the ice has begun to disappear. Scientists have discovered huge waves in the arctic waters.
The waves were discovered by accident in May, 2010. Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters.
The ship travelled east and stopped next to a large block of ice around 50 miles from the small island of Hopen. Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the ice.
“We were ready to go but when I went out, I discovered many cracks around,” he remembers.
He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went, he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones. Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.
Within an hour, Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship’s navigation system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour. Scientists had never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small.
The speed and force of the huge waves there makes it impossible to know in advance when they are coming. That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waved or depend on sea ice to protect them. Wildlife like polar bears that depend on sea ice to live is also in danger.
Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in icy waters. As waves break up ice, seas will be more open, waves will be stronger. There are stormy times ahead.

Passage 8
Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events-love, sadness, good times, and bad times. It tells real-life, stories and sounds the way people really talk. As life becomes more difficult to understand, it is good to hear music about ordinary people.
Country music, sometimes called country-western, comes from the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern Unite States. Country music is also from traditional cowboy music from the west. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars. At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South. But during World War II, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps in the South. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.
Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada—in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. Passage 9
Crosstalk, or xiangsheng, is one of China’s most popular performing arts. People of all ages love it — kids, grandparents, and everyone in between find it super fun. Even many young students enjoy it after class, laughing along with performers on stage.
No one knows exactly when crosstalk started. Some say the Ming Dynasty, but most think it became a real art during the Qing Dynasty when cities were full of energy. At first, one person did dankou (solo acts), telling silly stories or jokes. Later, when three or more joined, it was qunkou (group acts). But today, the most common is duikou (two-person acts). In duikou, there’s a “funny leader” (dougen) who makes most jokes, and a “helper” (penggen) who laughs, asks silly questions, or makes the jokes even funnier. They chat about daily life or silly things, making the audience laugh nonstop.
Crosstalk has four key skills: shuo (telling stories/jokes), xue (copying sounds — like how cats meow or grandpas cough), dou (making people laugh with silly words/faces), and chang (singing short folk tunes). These are taught by older actors to new students, learning by doing.
In recent years, online videos have made crosstalk even more popular. In 2008, China named it a “national intangible heritage” to help keep this funny art alive for more people.
So next time you watch, remember: every laugh comes from lots of practice and happy sharing!

Passage 10
A while ago I sent out a couple of hundred letters for information on subjects that interest me. One of the questions I asked was “When you think of love, what color comes to your mind?”
One person said “money”. I didn’t know what color that was, maybe green, but I wasn’t sure, so, I didn’t give it a color. Two people said love didn’t have any color. Two other people said love was the color of the rainbow. That’s a nice thought. Now only 3 people chose red as the color they thought of as love. This surprised me, since that is the color used most on Valentines’ Day (情人节). I guess passion doesn’t necessarily mean love. There was a tie of 4 each for white and yellow. I can understand wanting a pure love (white) or a wise and happy love (yellow). Pink is the choice of 5 people who I think need beauty in their lives. Six people said either lavender, lilac (紫丁香) or violet was the color of love. I think all of them want some magic and mystery in their love lives. Green was the color chosen by 7 people as the color they thought of as love. These people must want a balanced love and maybe some money too.
The most surprising answer was that 14 people picked blue. I think these people may know about love. Love should be sincere and true. Maybe if you have “the blues”, it is because you don’t have love. Most blues music is about lost love. Maybe blue is the color of love. I just can’t see sending a blue heart to my lover next Valentines’ Day.
This little survey is not scientific, but it is very interesting. Did you know not all people dream in color? Well, I hope everyone makes sure to daydream in the most wonderful and wild colors possible.

Passage 11
I’ve never lived in a dorm (寝室) before. Studying in the US gave me this new experience. The dorm I lived in is called Village Girls. You need to bring your cleaning things and clothes from your home. But it’s also important to bring things you may find trivial, like toys or something you hold dear. You may think it unnecessary, but you’ll find that having something that reminds you of home can help you a lot.
When I first arrived, I only brought those things on the school list. However, there was an empty feeling in my heart, a sense of loneliness. There were no toys to hug at night, nor anything I could look at and be reminded of home. That’s when I realized that though we saw things like toys as unnecessary, we needed them more than anything else.
It is also important to make friends.Though most parents prefer you to find someone with good grades, I think it’s better to choose someone with a good heart. If you’re shy, it is even more important to greet everyone in your dorm. That’s because once you keep yourself away from others, people may think you are cold.
A friend of mine once told me, “No matter how much you've grown, you're still a kid at heart.” I’ve come to realize that it is true. No matter how old we are, our inner (内心的) selves still need love and comfort (安慰). With a friend and a toy in hand, I hope you’ll find joy no matter where you are.

She had an unpleasant voice and a direct way of speaking. For some reason, she then made a deep impression on me.
Maria would ask me for my opinion. She wanted to know how I thought we should deal with things. At first, I had no idea how to answer because I knew nothing about stage design. But I slowly began to respond to her questions. It was cause and effect: She believed me and encourage me, So I began to form opinions and completed things perfectly. Most importantly, I began to believe in myself.
Maria’s motto (格言) was, “Try it. We can always paint over it later!” I began to take risks (冒险). I had been so afraid of failing but suddenly there was no failing-only things to be improved. With her help, I learned to dip my brush into the paint and create something with great confidence.
The shy, quiet starter achieved success that year. I was selected into the program as “Student Art Assistant” because of the time and effort I’d put in. It was that year that I realized I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing stage design.

It was a lovely Spring morning here in the mountains of my home. The sky was blue, the sun was out, and the air was warm. As I drove along the roads I could see thousands of wild flowers in bloom. When I rounded a curve(转弯)I slowed. I saw some volunteers picking up rubbish along the side of the road. I smiled as I saw them doing some “Spring Cleaning” for Mother Earth. And my mind floated(飘荡)back in time to another Spring day long ago.
When my children were younger we used to walk around the lake near our home. One Spring day my daughter and I noticed just how much rubbish was lying along the path. The next day then we brought a big rubbish bag with us and started to slowly, step by step, pick up the rubbish along our way. There were plastic water bottles, wrappers(包装袋)for candy bars, empty chip bags, pieces of broken fishing line, and even an old thrown—away shoe. We stopped and picked up each one and even fished a few pieces of garbage out of the edge of the water. By the time we had circled the lake the bag was nearly full.
Tired but happy, we put the bag in an empty dustbin. We stopped before we headed home and took one last look at the lake as the sun set. It looked more beautiful than ever and I felt like the angels were looking down upon it with us and sharing our smiles.
I know that at times you wonder what you can do to make a difference. But the truth is EVERYTHING you do makes a difference! Every time you pick up a single piece of rubbish you make a difference. Every kind word you say makes a difference. Every loving thought you think, every flower you plant, every animal you save, everything you do, no matter how small, makes a difference in this world. Make your difference today! Share your love. Shine your light.

But one day, without any warning, Sam died of a heart attack (心脏病突发) at the animal hospital and I had to walk back to our house alone. This time, there was no Sam for Katty to greet and no way for me to explain why she would never see her friend again.
In the days that followed, Katty seemed heartbroken. She could not tell me in words how she felt, but I could see the pain and disappointment in her eyes whenever anyone opened the front door and the hope whenever she heard a dog bark.
As the weeks went by, the cat seemed to feel much better. One day as I walked into our living room, I happened to have a look at the floor next to our sofa where we had a statue (塑像) of Sam that we had bought a few years before. Passage 8
Imagine an expressway(高速公路) that can circle around Earth more than three and a half times! China is home to the world’s largest expressway network, with a total length of 160,000 kilometers as of the end of 2020. By 2035, the network will cover all cities and counties, China Daily reported.
The expressway’s blueprint(蓝图) was first announced in 1991, when China was still at the early stage of its market reforms(改革). The speedy growth of the economy called for more convenient transportation. The government planned to build expressways with a total length of 35,000 kilometers over 30 years. But the goal was achieved by 2008, 13 years ahead of schedule.
The expressways connect not only China’s biggest cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, but also many medium-sized cities. They reach about 70 percent of China’s urban residents(居民). Different climate and terrain(地形) challenges were overcome. This allowed roads to be built in undeveloped areas.
The expressways provide strong support for poverty alleviation(扶贫). Take the Shanghai-Chongqing expressway as an example. At the eastern end of the road, Shanghai is China’s financial center. But the western end used to be one of the country’s poorest areas. It’s the Wuling mountain region. It covers the city of Chongqing, as well as Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces. Because of the expressway, the region has been lifted out of extreme poverty.

With the rapid development of science and technology, the ways of communication among people have changed a lot in the past years.
As we all know, in ancient times, people communicated with others who were far away only by writing letters. It took a very long time to get the message.
In the 19th century, telegraph was invented, but it was not widely used. The letter was still the commonest way at that time. Passage 2
They now sell about 10,000 pairs of shoes each year, both online and in their store.

2.When did a soldier visit the school and show the students a system?
3.How old was Louis Braille when he created a system?

Passage 4
We moved to a beautiful two-storey (两层) old house. The house was built in 1905. It was repaired in 1997.
At first, really small things began to happen that didn’t make me believe that anything was wrong, but as time went on, things started becoming stranger and stranger.
I thought the kitchen window must have been opened, but when I checked it, it was closed. The windows were new, and there was no way any cold air came in.
We all felt very strange and moved away from there in October, 2002. I was never really frightened (害怕的). It was just strange, like something or someone was trying to get my attention or something.

根据短文内容,请用完整句子回答下列问题。
1.When did Marchenko and his students discover huge waves in the arctic waters?
2.What happened to the ice around the ship when the ship moved into the ice?
3.How high were the largest waves recorded by the navigation system?
4.What animals will be in danger because of the huge waves?
5.What will people see in these icy waters?
Passage 6
Chinese traditional painting and dance are two important parts of the art world. But what about when they meet each other?
This year, a dance drama called Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting (《只此青绿》) was shown on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala. It became popular overnight.
According to CCTV, this poetic dance got the idea from the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》). Created by Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng at about 18, the painting is amazing in its sweeping size, rich coloration and expressive details. It shows a Chinese blue-green landscape: “mountains and groupings of endless rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water”.
The dance shows the Chinese traditional beauty of the painting. The dancers each had a different hairstyle, which looked like a mountain rock. The clothes that they wore were shades of green and blue, which is also poetic show of the mountains and rivers. When the dancers swayed beautifully, the audience seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers. Huge mountains and rivers are coming to life! More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.

Passage 7
Beijing Opera is one of the traditional Chinese drama art forms with a history of more than 200 years. It is said that Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty loved the theatre. At the beginning, there was no Beijing Opera. Kunqu Opera was the most popular, but Emperor Qianlong gradually became bored with this style. Various local operas were brought to Beijing to please the emperor. Drawing on the good points of these local operas, the new Beijing Opera came into being and became Qianlong’s favorite.
Beijing Opera mixes different art forms, including singing, dancing, acrobatics and Wushu. All these art forms are put into one performance. Facial painting (脸谱) is one of the most important signs of Peking Opera. It shows the roles’ personalities. For example, a red face usually shows the role’s bravery; a white face shows the treachery and guile; a black face shows the role is a strict man.
Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, a famous performer, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will doubt and sometimes be a little bored, but you will be interested gradually. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera, even if you know nothing about the drama background.” This is how one traveler described his first experience in watching Beijing Opera.

About 1, 200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty-four hours a day. English stars sing it in British English, and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor Southerners is now popular all over the world.

1.When do people think crosstalk became an real art form?
2.What was the earliest form of xiangsheng?
3.How many forms of xiangsheng are introduced in paragraph 2?
4.What are the key skills in xiangsheng according to the text?
5.Do you like xiangsheng? Why or why not?

Maria was a teacher in my high school. I still remember the first time I saw her. It was in the ninth grade. We met on a stage (舞台) design team for a play and she was one of the directors.

Passage 5
I had two pets in my house, a dog named Sam and a cat named Katty. They loved each other so much that they were always together. When I played with one, the other joined in. If Sam barked at something, Katty ran to see what it was. When I took either one out of the house, the other was always waiting by the door when we returned. That was the way it was for years.
Lying next to it, one arm around the statue's neck, was Katty, happily sleeping with her best friend.

As a new online word game, Wordle is taking the world by storm. Wordle went from just 90 users in November 2021 to more than 2 million users in January of this year.
In Wordle, you must work out a mystery five-letter word in six guesses or less. After each guess, the color of the squares changes to show how close you are. Similar to crossword puzzles and Scrabble (一种拼字游戏), Wordle is not only fun but also great for the brain. It’s also simple and quick to play.
The most unique (独特的) thing is that you can only play it once a day. People wait every day to play it. “It’s just so fun! It’s one of the first things I do after I wake up,” said Francesca Gould from Australia.

Passage 7
“I could tell it was him by the way he walked.” If you’ve ever said that, you understand biometrics(生物识别技术). Biometric technology is an important topic in our work and private lives. It includes the use of finger prints or knowing a person’s voice. It is the science about what a person looks like and how a person does things. Like tree leaves, no two human beings are exactly the same. They’ve got different eyes and different hair. And everyone has a different way of walking or moving.
This technology can tell you from others. At the moment if you travel through an airport, you need your ID card or passport. If you go to your bank to get some money, you need a card and a special number. But what should you do if you lose your passport or forget your number? Biometric technology can solve this problem. The technology is becoming more and more popular with old people because they no longer need to remember their passwords(密码).
This technology is all around us in our life. We use them to unlock a smart phone, get into our homes, start our cars without a key or even pay for our shopping.
Nothing is perfect. People are worried about the safety of their private information. However, the technology will become much better in the future, and it will become more and more important in our daily life.
