With all the recent concern about the environment, people want to see their money used to better the planet. Here are four well-known environmental organizations.
World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
The World Wildlife Fund is perhaps one of the best-known organizations for the protection of endangered species and their habitats around the world. They've been around for over 60 years. You can donate through their website worldwildlife.org,join their organization as a member,or adopt an animal through their online adoption center.
National Geographic Society (NGS)
National Geographic Society is well-known for their magazine and their specials on TV.The organization itself is one of the longest-running in the world—they've been around since 1888,focusing on exploration and conservation of forests, oceans, habitats, species and societies. You can choose to donate through the website nationalgeographic.com, buy something at their online store,or order a magazine subscription.
National Wildlife Federation (NWF)
Founded officially in 1936,the National Wildlife Federation tries to protect wildlife at all costs. In fact, they believe that having the public educated is the best way to help the environment—the more you know, the more you can protect the world we live in.Donations to the NWF can be made through their website nwf.org or through other options, like matching gifts, workplace giving,or memorial donations.
EcologyFund.com
Set up in 1976,EcologyFund.com is run on user clicks.Advertisers buy ad space on the site every time someone clicks. The money goes to buy endangered wilderness land to protect it from companies that would destroy it.So far,EcologyFund.com has bought land in many areas. The best thing about this site is that you needn't donate any money—all you have to do is click.

(2024·山东日照期中联考)A couple carved out a life on a small rock island, among the seabirds. The Bass Rock is a small volcanic island just off the east coast of Scotland.Remarkable in the Scottish imagination for its landform and location in the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh, the island has had a thin and intermittent (断断续续的) human population across the centuries. Its most notable and sustained inhabitants are the northern gannets (塘鹅) that have lived on the island throughout recorded history. With a population of roughly 150,000 birds, their home is the largest in the world.
The English naturalist June Nelson is one of the few people who have lived on the Bass Rock. For three years in the early 1960s,she and her late husband, the ornithologist Bryan Nelson, who was researching gannets at the University of Oxford, made the island their temporary home.Living and working out of a small church, they devoted themselves to observing and recording the behaviors and ecology of the birds. The then-newly-married had little contact with the outside world, but led a happy life together.
In the short documentary Life on the Rocks,Nelson revisits her full and focused years on the Bass Rock.Combining cinematic black-and-white shots of the island with music, the UK director George Pretty creates a vivid account of Nelson's unforgettable time there,as well as her emotional return.Mining Nelson's memories and old photographs, the film explores how the husband-and-wife team found happiness on this unique patch of Earth, and among its many birds. But,more than just a fondness for the past,Nelson communicates an urgency to protect the plummeting (暴跌) global seabird population, which has decreased by 70% in her lifetime, asking “What right do we have to deprive (剥夺) future generations of this wonderful place?”

Researchers say that pubs and other public places should rethink fitting washrooms with high-speed electric hand dryers because paper towels do a better job of containing germs when people do not wash their hands properly.A study found that the dryers left more contamination(污染)on poorly washed hands when compared with old-fashioned paper towels. They also caused virus particles to be blown on to clothing and people who used them left a trail of microbes(微生物)when they touched surfaces.
The findings are valuable, the authors of the study said, because even healthcare workers often take shortcuts when washing their hands.A previous survey found that only 40 percent stuck to recommended hand-washing practices.
The study involved an experiment where volunteers dipped (浸) their hands in a liquid containing a harmless virus and dried them using either an air dryer or paper towels. The participants also wore aprons to measure how contamination had spread to their clothing. They were then asked to walk through a hospital while touching surfaces such as lift buttons.Samples were collected from surfaces that volunteers had touched and from the aprons.
“Based on the user and surface contamination observed,we question the choice of air dryers in healthcare settings,” said Dr Ines Moura,an author of the study.“Microbes remaining after hand drying can transfer to surfaces via contaminated hands and clothing.” On average, the levels of contamination to surfaces volunteers touched were ten times higher after hands were dried with an air dryer than with paper towels.Researchers also saw greater transfer of microbes to the apron when volunteers used the air dryer.“The study was performed in a healthcare setting and has important lessons for health institutions that still have high-speed air dryers, but the results are also important for public restrooms,” Moura said. The study was published in the journal Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.
8.What findings does the study get?
A.Paper towels can better help reduce contamination.
B.Restrooms should be equipped with more paper towels.
C.Paper towels cause virus particles to spread to clothing.
D.Hand dryers do a better job in containing virus.
答案 A
9.Why do the researchers think the findings significant?
A.People prefer using hand dryers nowadays.
B.People like dipping their hands into the water.
C.People touch surfaces such as lift buttons a lot.
D.People don't wash their hands completely enough.
10.Where is the study most probably conducted?
A.In a pub. B.In a lift.
C.In a hospital. D.In a laboratory.
11.What is the purpose of this text?
A.To advocate the authority stopping the use of hand dryers.
B.To draw attention to the problem of hand dryers.
C.To call on people to wash their hands as recommended.
D.To warn people not to use hand dryers in public places.
结合全文,尤其是根据文章开头“Researchers say that pubs and other public places should rethink fitting washrooms with high-speed electric hand dryers”可知,作者写这篇文章是为了引起大家对烘干机问题的思考,从而使用让手部变干的正确方式来抑制病毒传播。
D
(2024·山东淄博实验中学期中考试)In the rainforest, thousands of species sing and call, forming sound layers so rich that the human mind can be overwhelmed.Drop a hydrophone(水听器) into an ocean and you will hear similar richness, but it is foreign to our air-adapted ears.Hundreds of thousands of other vocal(发声的)wonders ring out across the world.Every vocal species has a unique sound and every place on the globe has a vocal character. We live in a world of vocal wonders, yet this richness is being damaged worldwide.
In some places, vocal loss is caused by the destruction of habitats, from destroyed forests to overfished oceans. However,in habitats such as thick rainforests or oceans, sound is the only way for most animals to communicate even over short distances. This communication, such as mating songs, cooperative signals about food, cries that indicate social status and alarm calls, allows complex animal life to boom.Elsewhere, noise is also the problem.Machines pump so much sound into water and air that other species can't hear one another. The problem of noise is most serious in the oceans, where earthquake exploration, shipping and sonar(声呐)create a very loud sound that makes the area uninhabitable,or nearly so,for many species.
Mankind is also affected by environmental noise, with complaints about noise pollution dating to the very first cities, recorded on clay tablets from Babylonia. This noise is no mere inconvenience: It may cause diseases or deaths. The European Environment Agency estimates that environmental noise in Europe causes 12,000 untimely deaths and 48,000 new cases of heart disease per year.
What can be done to address these problems? Perhaps among the scientific studies of trends in vocal loss, activities to advocate(提倡)for justice and policy-making to reduce noise pollution and habitat destruction,we'd better also find space to listen.Just as we go out with friends to hear a concert, might we do the same for the birds in a city park? In this simple act,we might find inspiration and a direct connection to our more-than-human neighbors.

Consume less
17 .Whether by quitting an automobile or employing a reusable grocery sack, cutting back on consumption results in fewer fossil fuels being burned to extract, produce and ship products around the globe.
18
A potentially simpler and even bigger effect can be produced by doing more with less.Citizens of many developed countries are energy-wasters,whether by speeding in a gas-wasting vehicle or leaving the lights on when not in a room.Similarly, employing more efficient refrigerators, air conditioners and other appliances can cut electricity bills. 19 .You can turn the lights or your computers off when you leave the office.
Stop cutting down trees
When purchasing wood products, such as furniture or flooring, buy used goods or,failing that, wood proved officially to have been sustainably harvested. The Amazon rainforest and other forests are more than the lung of the earth. 20 .
A.Be energy efficient
B.Use few electrical appliances
C.But it doesn't have to be that way
D.Such efforts can also be usefully employed at work
E.They may also be humans' short-term hope for limiting climate change
F.The easiest way to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions is simply to buy less stuff
G.Citizens spend more money on electricity to power devices when they're off than when they're on

I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.
Those were difficult times.People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding.Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump(抽水机) did have clean water,we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump didn't work,we had to walk five kilometers to the closest stream.
But I was happy.I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived,Dad drove me to Uncle Jita's house and left.Once Uncle Jita saw me,he announced,“Tomorrow we're going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera,Amy.You can take photos of what you see.”
The following day,we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off the boat, there was nothing in front of us.“I don't want to take pictures of this,” I complained.
Uncle laughed,“Start walking,Amy.I promise you'll be surprised.” After some time,I could see the outline of a forest in the distance.A little closer, there was a man waving to us.
“That's Kabir. The forest you see is his.He planted every single tree.” As we walked towards Kabir,Uncle explained that thirty years ago,the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise(天堂).
Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair.“Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some?” he asked.“Of course!” I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees.I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places, all because of the efforts of one man.
Like what Uncle said,Kabir's forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers.During lunchtime,Kabir explained how,by planting trees,it was possible to stop the land from eroding.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

One possible version:
Hearing this,I turned to my uncle,“I think we can plant trees too.” Grabbing the camera in my hand,I added with excitement,“I've got a plan! I'll show them the photos of Kabir's magical forest!” Seeing Uncle's and Kabir's encouraging smile,I immediately got down to my work, busily pressing my shutter and capturing the amazing scenes in the forest. When Uncle and I went back to the village several days later and showed these wonderful pictures to my neighbours, they were amazed by the beauty of the forest.“It was the trees that turned the place into a paradise!” We then explained our tree-planting plan to the villagers, which was quickly accepted by all of them.
In the years that followed, people in our village worked hard to carry out our plan.Instead of cutting down our forest,we started to plant trees, which has eventually helped protect the soil from eroding. Thanks to the trees, the water has been cleaner and we finally have stable water supply. With our joint efforts, our village is now surrounded by small thriving forests with beautiful flowers, lively animals and clear streams.Witnessing the gradual change of our village,we come to realize that only when we live in harmony with nature can we have a brighter future.
