In my village in Kazakhstan, opportunities for personal development were limited. Many young people, including myself, felt the 1 of unfulfilled potential and a lack of means to explore our interests. Motivated by my passion for football and the desire to inspire others, I tried to use my love for the sport to 2 the youth in my community.
With the support of my local football club, I organized free training sessions for children aged 8 to 14. The first few practices were challenging; I faced 3 from parents who questioned whether a young athlete could make a meaningful impact. 4 , my determination fueled my efforts, and I focused on creating an inclusive environment.
As the weeks passed, I witnessed transformation. The children who once hesitated to participate began to 5 with excitement and enthusiasm. I not only taught them football techniques but also 6 important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Our training sessions became a safe space for self-expression and personal development.
At a local tournament, families and friends came out to cheer for the young athletes. As our team 7 through the matches, I felt an immense sense of pride — not just for our victories, but for the 8 we had formed. The joy on the players’ faces as they scored goals and celebrated together was a testament to the impact we had made.
Through this experience, I saw how investing time and effort in the youth of my community could foster a culture of support and 9 . The impact was not limited to the field; it extended to their life. Young athletes began to see themselves as 10 individuals with the potential to achieve their dreams. Later, I pursued a degree in community development to address broader issues, making a difference in larger contexts.

In the quiet town of Greenfield, situated in the hills of upstate New York, David Lee had built a life around his art. His small studio in an old Victorian house was a sanctuary (庇护所) where he painted landscapes that captured (展现) the heart of the town he loved. The walls were covered with pieces of art, each one reflecting his dedication and passion.
One crisp autumn evening, as the sun set, casting a golden glow over the town, David worked on what he believed was his best piece yet. Lost in his work, he barely noticed a flash of light in the corner of his eye.
It was a neighbor who first saw the smoke. By the time David realized what was happening, the fire had spread through half of his studio. He rushed outside, horrified to see the flames (火焰) consuming everything he had worked so hard for. Within minutes, his studio was reduced to ashes.
The following days were clouded with sorrow. David wandered the streets of Greenfield, confused and with no purpose. Friends and neighbors offered their support, but nothing could replace the years of work destroyed. One evening, as he sat on a bench in the town square, he noticed children drawing with chalk on the pavement. Their laughter and creativity cut through his despair.
David realized his passion for art wasn’t tied to the physical space of his studio. It was something deeper within him. He decided to start over, to rebuild his life and art anew.
With the help of his friends, David set up a small workspace in the community center. He began painting again, this time with renewed purpose. His first piece was an acknowledgment of Greenfield, capturing the town’s resilience (坚韧). As he painted, he felt a sense of peace he hadn’t felt in weeks.
One day, while finishing a challenging piece, a young girl approached him. “What are you painting?” she asked.
David smiled. “It’s a story,” he said. “A story of resilience and hope.”
The girl nodded, her eyes reflecting the colors on the painting. “It’s beautiful,” she said.
David felt warmth in his chest. He realized his art was about more than just paintings — it was about connecting with others and sharing his journey. From then on, David painted not only for himself but for everyone who needed a reminder of the beauty in the world. Though his studio had changed, his passion for art had been renewed, and in that, he found a new kind of resilience.
24.How did David feel after the fire destroyed his studio?
A.Angry and bitter. B.Grateful and content.
C.Lost and empty. D.Anxious and regretful.
25.What is the significance of the children drawing on the pavement?
A.Their creativity helps David find joy again.
B.They are a reminder of the fire’s destruction.
C.They represent the future of art in Greenfield.
D.They show how the town has forgotten about David’s art.
26.What is the theme of David’s first new painting after the fire?
A.Renewal. B.Resilience. C.Peace. D.Passion.
27.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The flash today is the silence tomorrow.
B.The less you expect, the more you appreciate.
C.The flame that burns you may also light your way.
D.The greatest roadblocks are the ones you cannot see.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.B 27.C
根据第四段“The following days were clouded with sorrow. David wandered the streets of Greenfield, confused and with no purpose.(接下来的几天充满了悲伤。大卫在格林菲尔德的街道上徘徊,茫然无措)”可知,大火烧毁了大卫的工作室后,他感到迷失和空虚。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第四段“One evening, as he sat on a bench in the town square, he noticed children drawing with chalk on the pavement. Their laughter and creativity cut through his despair.(一天晚上,当他坐在镇广场的长凳上时,他注意到孩子们在人行道上用粉笔画画。他们的笑声和创造力打破了他的绝望)”可知,孩子们在人行道上画画的意义是他们的创造力帮助大卫重新找到了快乐。故选A。
根据第六段“He began painting again, this time with renewed purpose. His first piece was an acknowledgment of Greenfield, capturing the town’s resilience (坚韧).(他又开始画画了,这次带着新的目标。他的第一部作品是对格林菲尔德的认可,捕捉了这个小镇的韧性)”可知,火灾后大卫的第一幅新画的主题是韧性。故选B。

Chinook salmon and their habitats in Seattle’s Thornton Creek suffered severely due to urban expansion, causing flash floods and biodiversity loss. Despite restoration efforts, the once-abundant salmon all but disappeared. During a conference, biologist Katherine Lynch proposed rebuilding the creek’s missing “liver” damaged by urbanization.
Lynch has been studying the hyporheic zone, a layer of wet sediment (沉积物), small stones and tiny creatures beneath the streambed. It facilitates water mixing and oxygen delivery to salmon eggs, earning the nickname “liver of the river.” The disappearance of this zone threatens the health of waterways. Lynch recognized that, however, most restoration efforts in Seattle overlooked it or disconnected it from the surface water.
Teamed with engineer Mike Hrachovec, Lynch redesigned Thornton Creek. They strategically put logs into the water at precise angles to create tiny waterfalls and nearly still water pockets, generating hydraulic pressure to force water down into the hyporheic zone. These accurately placed logs and rocks, known as “hyporheic structures,” also create pockets of slow water that provide safe shelters for juvenile fish — all meant to emulate features of a natural stream. Subsequent data analysis confirmed the stream functioned as Lynch’s team — and nature — intended.
But was the stream also supporting life? Given that the stone and sand positioned were sterile (贫瘠的) territory, Lynch thought that a biological jumpstart might be necessary and that the return of life to restored creeks relied on organisms migrating from healthy upstream habitats. So her team tried another ground-breaking move: inoculating (接种) the engineered hyporheic zone with microbes (微生物), which quickly populated the areas. But even though the number of individuals was high, the biodiversity was relatively low. A 2021 study by stream ecologist Sarah Morley noted that while a few of the new species grew rapidly, most were similar to those in unrestored section. Scientists are exploring reasons for the limited survival of introduced species, and because this science is so new, they have not ruled out any potential explanations: differences in the donor stream, size of the restored area, or poor water quality. They might have inoculated the hyporheic too soon, before essential vegetation could establish.
The Thornton Creek restorations have successfully prevented neighbourhood flooding, even during heavy storms, and stabilized the stream’s flow. Most notably, Chinook salmon returned to lay eggs in the restored hyporheic zones, touching Lynch deeply. She recalls, “this success suggests that small urban creek restorations can revitalize functioning ecosystems.”
28.What does the underlined word “emulate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Record. B.Copy. C.Monitor. D.Transform.
29.What can be inferred about the microbial inoculation in Thornton Creek?
A.It introduced essential vegetation. B.It restored the original biodiversity.
C.It increased the total quantity of microbes. D.It sourced microbes from downstream habitats.
30.What can we learn from Lynch’s restoration project?
A.It focused on increasing water oxygen levels.
B.It recreated the conditions of the donor stream.
C.It removed human-made structures from the creek.
D.It integrated physical redesign with bio-intervention.
31.Which would be the best title for this passage?
A.To Revive a River, Restore Its Liver.
B.Urbanization: A Silent Killer of a River.
C.Chinook Salmon Boost the Diversity of Ecosystems.
D.What Makes the Hyporheic Zone Vital for Restoration?.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.D 31.A
根据第三段中“They strategically put logs into the water at precise angles to create tiny waterfalls and nearly still water pockets, generating hydraulic pressure to force water down into the hyporheic zone. These accurately placed logs and rocks, known as “hyporheic structures,” also create pockets of slow water that provide safe shelters for juvenile fish — all meant to emulate features of a natural stream. (他们从策略上以精确的角度把原木放入水中,以制造出小瀑布和近乎静止的水洼,产生液压将水挤压进潜流带。这些精准放置的原木和石头被称为“潜流结构”,它们还形成了水流缓慢的区域,为幼鱼提供了安全的庇护所——这一切都是为了emulate自然溪流的特征)”可知,这些结构和设计都是为了模仿天然溪流的特征,所以“emulate”意思是“模仿”,与“copy”意思相近。故选B。
29.推理判断题。根据第四段中“But even though the number of individuals was high, the biodiversity was relatively low. (但是,尽管个体数量很高,生物多样性却相对较低)”以及“So her team tried another ground-breaking move: inoculating (接种) the engineered hyporheic zone with microbes (微生物), which quickly populated the areas. (于是,她的团队尝试了另一项开创性的举措:向经过改造的潜流带接种微生物,这些微生物迅速在这些区域大量繁殖)”可知,对桑顿溪进行微生物接种后,微生物数量迅速增加,但生物多样性相对较低。所以可以推断出微生物接种增加了微生物的总量。故选C。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Teamed with engineer Mike Hrachovec, Lynch redesigned Thornton Creek. They strategically put logs into the water at precise angles to create tiny waterfalls and nearly still water pockets, generating hydraulic pressure to force water down into the hyporheic zone. (林奇与工程师迈克・赫拉乔韦茨合作,重新设计了桑顿溪。他们颇有策略地将原木以精确的角度放入水中,打造出微型瀑布和近乎静止的水洼,产生水压,迫使水流进入潜流带)”以及第四段中“So her team tried another ground-breaking move: inoculating (接种) the engineered hyporheic zone with microbes (微生物), which quickly populated the areas. (于是,她的团队尝试了另一项开创性的举措:向经过改造的潜流带接种微生物,这些微生物迅速在这些区域大量繁殖)”可知,林奇的修复项目既包括对溪流的物理重新设计,如放置原木和岩石来制造“潜流结构”,又包括生物干预,如对潜流带进行微生物接种,将两者结合起来,由此推知,林奇的修复项目将物理重新设计与生物干预相结合。故选D。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是第一段中“During a conference, biologist Katherine Lynch proposed rebuilding the creek’s missing “liver” damaged by urbanization. 故选A。
D
Pure mathematics fascinates me, precisely because it is so inaccessible. I envision it as a remote, chilly, dangerous place, like Antarctica’s Sentinel Range. The hard y souls who surmount its peaks seem superhuman.
Perhaps because I romanticize mathematicians, I’m troubled by the thought that machines might replace them. I stated this possibility in The Death of Proof, published in the October 1993 Scientific American. In response to the growing complexity of mathematics, I reported, mathematicians were becoming increasingly reliant on computers. I asked, “Will the great mathematicians of the next century be made of silicon (硅)?”
Mathematicians are still annoyed about that article, even as the trends I described have continued. Anthony Bordg at Cambridge University worries that his field could face a “replication crisis” (复制危机) like that troubling scientific research. Mathematicians, Bordg notes, sometimes accept a proof not because they have checked it, step by step, but because they trust the proof’s methods and author. Given the “increasing difficulty in checking the correctness of mathematical arguments”, old-fashioned peer review may no longer be sufficient. Outstanding mathematicians have published “proofs” so novel and elaborate that even specialists in the relevant mathematics can’t validate them. Bordg suggests computerized “proof assistants ” will help confirm proofs. Researchers have already invented an “interactive theorem prover (交互式定理证明程序)” that can check proofs and even propose improvements.
Some mathematicians welcome the digitization of mathematics for accuracy. Others are conflicted. Michael Harris sees mathematics as “a free, creative activity” pursued for its own sake, for the pure joy of discovery and insight. He worries such tools will encourage a “limited vision” of mathematics as an economic product rather than “a way of being human”. After all, many funders of mathematical research, including technology giants, value mathematics primarily for its applications.
We value science for applications, too. Sentimental science writing, including mine, implies that science’s purpose is insight into nature. In the modern era, however, science’s primary goal is power. Science helps us control nature for various ends: to enrich and entertain, to boost economy, and to defeat enemies. Modern physics, to most of us, is incomprehensible, but who cares when physics gives us smartphones and hydrogen bombs?
Physicists often adopt a utilitarian (实用主义的) mindset, exemplified by the slogan “Shut up and calculate!” That is what professors supposedly tell students stuck in quantum mechanics. Stephen Hawking and Martin Rees have predicted artificial intelligence will play an increasing role in physics. Wouldn’t it be funny if a quantum AI finds the long-sought unified theory of physics, but not even brilliant theorist Edward Witten understands it?
Given the powerful forces behind automatization, if machines can replace mathematicians, they probably will, just as they are replacing drivers, bank tellers, travel agents, cashiers and other workers. Mathematicians’ wishes, such as their desire to pursue truth purely for its own sake, might be unlikely. The charm of math can hardly be preserved in face of the powerful forces behind automatization.
32.“Replication crisis” is mentioned to _________.
A.reduce a particular concern B.justify the use of digital assistants
C.question the role of authority in math D.highlight the potential threat of machines
33.Advocates of utilitarianism in science would probably agree that _________.
A.insight into nature is a priority B.automatization is a major trend
C.quantum AI remains a fantasy D.power is an approach to digitization
34.What can be learned from this passage?
A.Utilitarian mindset pushes physics forward.
B.Quantum mechanics unifies theories of physics.
C.The humanity of mathematics is hard to maintain.
D.Leading mathematicians’ proofs are beyond understanding.
根据第三段“Anthony Bordg at Cambridge University worries that his field could face a “replication crisis” (复制危机) like that troubling scientific research. Researchers have already invented an “interactive theorem prover (交互式定理证明程序)” that can check proofs and even propose improvements.(剑桥大学的Anthony Bordg担心,他的研究领域可能会面临像困扰科学研究那样的“复制危机”。
根据倒数第二段“Physicists often adopt a utilitarian (实用主义的) mindset, exemplified by the slogan “Shut up and calculate!” That is what professors supposedly tell students stuck in quantum mechanics. Stephen Hawking and Martin Rees have predicted artificial intelligence will play an increasing role in physics. (物理学家常常抱着实用主义的心态,他们的口号就是“闭嘴,计算!”这应该是教授们对被量子力学困住的学生们说的话。斯蒂芬·霍金和马丁·里斯预测,人工智能将在物理学中发挥越来越大的作用)”可知,像斯蒂芬·霍金和马丁·里斯的科学实用主义的倡导者预测人工智能将在物理学中发挥越来越大的作用,他们可能会同意自动化是一个主要趋势。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Given the powerful forces behind automatization, if machines can replace mathematicians, they probably will, just as they are replacing drivers, bank tellers, travel agents, cashiers and other workers. Mathematicians’ wishes, such as their desire to pursue truth purely for its own sake, might be unlikely. The charm of math can hardly be preserved in face of the powerful forces behind automatization.(考虑到自动化背后的强大力量,如果机器能够取代数学家,它们很可能会取代数学家,就像它们正在取代司机、银行柜员、旅行社、收银员和其他工人一样。数学家们的愿望,比如纯粹为了追求真理而追求真理的愿望,可能不太可能实现。面对自动化背后的强大力量,数学的魅力很难保持)”可知,机器可能会取代数学家,数学家们纯粹为了追求真理而追求真理的愿望可能不太可能实现,数学的人性化很难维持。故选C。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有项为多余选项。
Giving presentations is part of our educational or professional lives, whether we like it or not. A presentation is key to getting your message across, 35 So it’s advisable to brush up on the skills in quality presentations.
Control your nerves.
For years, Sally Chopping, a speech coach for the US training company Acting for Business, had feared the day she would draw a blank during a presentation. 36
“The audience doesn’t care if you mess up, and what they care about is what you are going to do about it,” Chopping said. “My nervousness went away when I concentrated not on myself, but instead just thought, ‘How is my speech going to help the audience?’ Once you do that, it gets rid of the fear. Every single step of the way, ask yourself; ‘What’s in it for them?’”
37
Doug Carter is the founder of Canada-based presentation skills training company Presentations Etc. When possible, he gets to the location of his presentation the day before to make sure all the electronic aids work. 38
In addition, build an exit plan before you present your presentation. Having a point from which you know you can conclude your main idea helps when approaching the end of the allowed time, or if you are given an unexpected five-minute warning.
Engage the audience.
Whether you’ve got a one-on-one talk or a speech in front of 400 people, think “storytelling”. 39 The way to a person’s head is through their heart. Sometimes all it takes is a few seconds to connect an audience member with a story.
Moreover, the hardest thing for people to do is say nothing, although it can be an effective tool. If you’ve got something people should read, pause and let them read it.
A.Think more.
B.Be prepared.
C.Stories are powerful because they combine data and information with emotion.
D.because it allows you to present your ideas directly and clearly.
E.whether you’re in an interview or giving a talk in front of the class.
F.He wants to ensure the screen, lighting and inputs all work properly.

“You Only Live Once” (YOLO), a concept made popular in contemporary society through social media, conveys the desire to make the most of the present situation and cast aside all worries about the future. This mindset is considered to be the characteristic of today’s youth. However, do young people truly embody the YOLO mentality, or are they too concerned about planning their future to enjoy the present?
Some young people do tend to be overly absorbed in future planning and miss out on the present, largely influenced by societal attitudes advocating the merits of working towards a life plan and future goal. In Asian societies, young people plan their futures carefully to ensure financial security for the latter half of their lives. This often means getting good education and jobs. So, many take extra classes, losing free time and hobbies. Their excessive (过度的) focus on academics, which neglects their personal nature, brings mental stress and stops them from following their passions.
Another factor driving young people to excessively plan for the future is the increasing number of world challenges. Natural disasters, conflicts, wars, and pandemics are increasing, making the job market unstable. Young people are now more pressured to consider their future in this changing world. As a result, they don’t enjoy their youth as they should. Research conducted by University College London shows over half of 16-25-year-olds are worried about their future, with 53% believing job prospects are worsening.
Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to see that more young people are stepping off the beaten path and embracing the YOLO philosophy. The future is uncertain, and it’s natural for young people to feel anxious. However, living in the moment and enjoying each experience is crucial. After all, isn’t life more about the journey than the destination?
40.What mindset does YOLO convey?
41.What are the two main factors that cause some young people to focus more on future planning?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
In order to find their passions in life, young people in Asia plan their futures carefully.
43.How do you understand the sentence “Life is more about the journey than the destination.” in the passage? (In about 40 words)
40.It conveys the desire to make the most of the present situation and cast aside all worries about the future. 41.The two main reasons are societal attitudes (advocating the merits of working towards a life plan and future goal/that advocate working towards a life plan and future goal) and the increasing number of world challenges. 42.In order to find their passions in life, young people in Asia plan their futures carefully.
In Asia, young people plan their futures carefully to ensure financial security for the latter half of their lives. 43.It emphasizes that life’s value lies not in achieving fixed goals but in the experiences, growth, and connections forged along the way. Hence, experiences and feelings during life’s journey are more valuable, so we should cherish and enjoy the present.
根据第一段中的““You Only Live Once” (YOLO), a concept made popular in contemporary society through social media, conveys the desire to make the most of the present situation and cast aside all worries about the future.(“及时行乐”(YOLO),一个通过社交媒体在当代社会流行起来的概念,传达了充分利用当下情况并抛开对未来所有担忧的愿望。)” It conveys the desire to make the most of the present situation and cast aside all worries about the future.
根据第二段中的“Some young people do tend to be overly absorbed in future planning and miss out on the present, largely influenced by societal attitudes advocating the merits of working towards a life plan and future goal.(一些年轻人确实倾向于过度专注于未来规划而错过当下,这在很大程度上受到倡导朝着人生计划和未来目标努力的社会态度的影响。)”和第三段中的“Another factor driving young people to excessively plan for the future is the increasing number of world challenges.(促使年轻人过度规划未来的另一个因素是世界挑战的不断增加。)” The two main reasons are societal attitudes (advocating the merits of working towards a life plan and future goal/that advocate working towards a life plan and future goal) and the increasing number of world challenges.
依据文章第二段中的“In Asian societies, young people plan their futures carefully to ensure financial security for the latter half of their lives.(在亚洲社会,年轻人仔细规划他们的未来,以确保后半生的经济安全。)” In order to find their passions in life错误,应改为In order to ensure financial security for the latter half of their lives。 In order to find their passions in life, young people in Asia plan their futures carefully. In Asia, young people plan their futures carefully to ensure financial security for the latter half of their lives.
It emphasizes that life’s value lies not in achieving fixed goals but in the experiences, growth, and connections forged along the way. Hence, experiences and feelings during life’s journey are more valuable, so we should cherish and enjoy the present.

G.The one day it happened — she forgot what she was going to say.
