Workers continue to search the ruins of a large earthquake that hit Morocco Friday. Officials say almost 2,500 were killed in the quake, but that they expect that number will rise. The United Nations said the magnitude 6.8 earthquake affected 300,000 people. The damage (损失) was great because the starting point of the shaking was not far below the ground.
It is the strongest quake to hit the North African nation since 1900. And, it is reported to be the country’s deadliest since 1960, when at least 12,000 people were killed in and near the city of Agadir.

People said they dug through the ruins of their homes looking for relatives. They also moved rocks and walls looking for important items.

“The failure to play is now a serious issue and it calls for action for change, ” says Sir Ken Robinson, a leading expert in education, creativity and human development. This is the driving force behind Outdoor Classroom Day - a global teacher-led campaign, supported by Dirt is Good, a company producing daily chemical products.
Outdoor Classroom Day, taking place on 17th May and 1st November this year, will see schools around the world swap the inside for the playground and beyond to make playtime a key part of the school day. This might involve using natural objects like stones to do sums, or going on an insect hunt to encourage curiosity. By now, Outdoor Classroom Day has grown from a grassroots movement to a global campaign that is expected to benefit five million children and over 40, 000 schools from all around the world.
This is helping to change the trend that sees many schools selling up or building up on their playgrounds and cutting back on playtime to make more room for academic studies, while at home children’s lives are increasingly filled with organized activities intended to help them learn. Today globally 61% of parents surveyed in the Dirt is Good Qualitative Study said that children don’t know how to play without using technology.
Outdoor Classroom Day is making playing time happen, with 22% of participating schools having increased their playtime since joining the campaign. 93% of teachers surveyed saw improvements in children’s creativity after playing outside and 97% believe that time outdoors is necessary for children to reach their full potential.
Scientific studies show that real play - the active, physical, self-directed play - is essential for children to develop key life skills that are not taught elsewhere. Few would question the value of developing creativity, leadership, resourcefulness, and curiosity.
8. What do children do on Outdoor Classroom Day?
A. Have PE. classes on the playgrounds.
B. Have a day off and go playing anywhere.
C. Learn and play by using natural things outside.
D. Play on their own without the teachers’ guidance.
9. Why do children spend less time outdoors?
A. Schools stop providing playgrounds.
B. Adults ignore the importance of playtime.
C. Parents prefer to homeschool their children.
D. Technology helps children learn better at home.
10. What’s the school teachers’ attitude towards the campaign?
A. Positive. B. Uncertain. C. Unconcerned. D. Negative.
11. What’s the purpose of the passage ?
A. To introduce an activity. B. To advertise a product.
C. To entertain the public. D. To persuade students to play.
D
Handwritten Chinese characters (文字) can be beautiful. I still remember looking at Chinese and not understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strong attraction (吸引力). In fact, some students start learning Chinese because of the characters. After having studied Chinese for a while, I realized that handwriting in Chinese takes a very long time to learn.
Living as we do in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphones and computers, most students sooner or later ask themselves this question: Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand in Chinese? When using smartphones or computers, we can use phonetic input (语音输 入) systems, which choose the characters we want for us as long as we can remember how they are pronounced. Since we enter different characters, we seldom need to be able to recognize the difference between characters in detail; the computer makes the right choices for us. Do we really need to write Chinese by hand at all?
I think most people agree that you should learn to write at least some characters at some point as a student of Chinese, although not necessarily straight away and not necessarily all the characters that you can say. But unless you don’t care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of handwriting. Without it, it will be very hard to understand characters. You don't need to be a calligraphy master (书法大师), but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this. Simply looking at things is, as usual, a bad way of learning.
I think learning the most common 500 characters or so is a good idea for all students. If you actually want to write by hand, increase that to 1, 000. Then learn to handwrite characters outside of the 1, 000 most common on a need-to-know basis.
12. What does the author think of Chinese characters?
A. They are less communicative than English words.
B. They attract some foreigners to learn Chinese.
C. They show the greatness of Chinese culture.
D. They are not really that difficult.
13. What can we infer about characters in paragraph 2?
A. Characters are very difficult for foreigners to learn.
B. People believe learning to write characters is important.
C. People doubt the necessity of learning to write characters.
D. Characters may disappear with the development of society.
14. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Understanding characters.
B. Being a calligraphy master.
C. Keeping a good learning habit.
D. Learning basic handwriting skills.
15. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Is it necessary to learn to write Chinese characters by hand?
B. When was the last time you wrote something by hand?
C. What rules are there for handwriting?
D. How to write Chinese characters on a computer?

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. A

Do we really need to write Chinese by hand at all?(由于我们输入不同的字符,我们很少需要能够详细识别字符之间的差异;电脑为我们做出了正确的选择。我们真的需要中文手写吗?)”可知,人们怀疑学习汉字的必要性。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三自然段“But unless you don’t care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of handwriting. Without it, it will be very hard to understand characters. You don’t need to be a calligraphy master, but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this.(但是,除非你根本不在乎书面语言,否则你应该学习书法的基础知识。没有它,就很难理解汉字。你不需要成为一名书法大师,但你确实需要基本的书法技能才能做到这一点)”可知,划线词this指代上文中的“理解汉字”。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“I think learning the most common 500 characters or so is a good idea for all students. If you actually want to write by hand, increase that to 1, 000. Then learn to handwrite characters outside of the 1, 000 most common on a need-to-know basis.(我认为学习最常见的500个汉字左右对所有学生来说都是一个好主意。如果你真的想手写,那就增加到1000。然后学习手写1000个最常见的汉字以外的汉字。)”以及通读全文可知,文章议论的是:我们生活在一个拥有智能手机和电脑的数字时代,学习中文手写真的有必要吗?作者给出了自己的答案——手写汉字有必要。A选项“有必要学习手写汉字吗?”概括全文,适合文章标题。故选A。

Simple ways to improve your written English
Many people think it is really difficult to improve (提高) their writing in English. Don’t worry, though. Here are some simple steps that you can take to improve your written English.
● Increase your vocabulary.
To express yourself clearly, you need a good active vocabulary. That’s not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly. ___16___
Tip: When you learn a new word, try to learn all the forms of that word.
● ___17___
People often say that we learn to write best by reading. Reading in English is useful in many ways. It is a great way to get an idea of the different styles of writing and see how to use words properly.
Tip: ___18___ Learning shouldn’t be boring. Read each text several times to make sure you understand how to use new words and expressions in the text.
● Improve your grammar.
Grammar is very important because it improves the quality (质量) of your writing.
Tip: ___19___ The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.
● Just do it!
The best way to improve your writing is to get a pen and paper and write. Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text. ___20___
A. Know your readers.
B. Read widely and often.
C. Always check your writing twice.
D. Remember, practice makes perfect!
E. Choose books or articles that interest you.
F. Use simpler language and shorter sentences to show your ideas.
G. Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.
【答案】16. G 17. B 18. E 19. C 20. D
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇应用文。文章就如何提高英语写作水平给出了三点建议。
【16题详解】
根据本段小标题Increase your vocabulary (增加你的词汇量)及空前That’s not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly.(这不仅仅是能够知道很多单词,这意味着能够正确地使用它们)可知,G项Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.(通过例句学习新单词,而不仅仅是单词表)符合文意。选项G中的new words与标题中的vocabulary以及与上句中的lots of words呼应,并且选项G中的doing this可与use them correctly形成指代关系。故选G。
【17题详解】
根据其它两个小标题的句式可知,此处应填简短的祈使句。由第二段小标题下的Reading in English is useful in many ways.(读英语在很多方面是很有用的)可知,这个小标题强调读英语的重要性。由此可知,B项 Read widely and often(广泛地读与常读)可与标题下的内容呼应。故选B。
【18题详解】
根据下文Learning shouldn’t be boring.(学习不应该是枯燥的)可知,这里应是描写英语读的内容。选项E中的interest you(让你感兴趣的)可与下一句中的boring形成翻译呼应;由此可知, E项Choose books or articles that interest you.(选择你感兴趣的书或文章)符合文意。故选E。
【19题详解】
根据空后The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.(第一次,找出一般的错误,第二次,找出你正在学习的语法点的错误)可知,此处指写完后要检查两遍。由此可知,C项Always check your writing twice.(经常检查你的写作两次)符合文意。选项C中的“twice”可与其中的“The first time…the second time”呼应,故选C。
【20题详解】
根据空前Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text.(准备好写几遍的打算)及本段的小标题Just do it!(就这么干吧!)

What’s more, it makes me more energetic and effective in my study. I began to show great interest in it at the age of seven. Now I’m on the school table tennis team.
