pursuit of justice for others.As a mother,friend,and woman,however,she shows a softer side.Her
actions show sensitivity, optimism, and kindness unlike any other I have ever known.
As an only child,I never received the gift of a sibling(兄弟姐妹)with whom I could share
laughs,secrets,or knowing glances from across a room.The older I've got,the more I have realized
I never needed a sibling,anyway.
Back home,my mom and I would wake and have a quick breakfast together, and leave for
Jersey City-she is off to work and I went to school.Regardless of cold weather, heavy traffic,or
my anxious stomach ache prior to a day of exams,we always had fun.She would tell jokes and we
would laugh. With her infectious smile and confident attitude,my mom managed to turn every sad
morning of mine into a better day.
Now that I am at Rochester,we are separated by nearly 400 miles of sloping highway.I no
longer have the chance of looking out a classroom window and seeing her office building standing
tall a mile away.Moving away from home was a major shift-and not just because of my new
suburban rented room, minimized food options, and much bitter winters.
When I am missing my mom especially,I recall the words she told me when I would cry as a
young girl:a line from her favorite poem,by author E.E.Cummings.
"I carry your heart with me;I carry it in my heart,"she'd smile, wiping away my tears.
As I reflect upon that sentence,I can see that there is a piece of my mom with me wherever I
go.I guess those 400 miles between the two of us isn't so distant, after all.

Thanks to technology development, healthcare services are more accessible than ever.
Hospitals have committed to digitally enabled care going mainstream and more health services have
gone online than ever before. But are older people who don't use the Internet being left behind?
A study by Lancaster University found that lots of older people still avoid online life
completely or use the Internet only on occasion. There are various reasons why older people don't
use the Internet. For many,a lack of confidence in their own ability to use technology raised fears
about security,particularly with online banking.
Whatever the reasons are,one of the biggest concerns about an offline older generation is the
likelihood that they will miss out on big developments in health accessibility, especially as many
useful health services move online.Madeleine Starr MBE,director of business development and
mnovation at Carers UK,saidThough many of us use technology in our everyday lives, seven out
of ten people don't yet think of technology when it comes to caring. So,many are not yet realizing
the benefits of this technology.Accessing appointments, ordering prescriptions()or having
consultations online can all help reduce visits to doctors and unplanned hospital visits."
In an aging society, the Internet can make a huge amount of difference to older people
requiring a bit of extra support and those caring for them."Advice from specialist websites or
symptom checkers is great for those who are unsure if their symptoms are cause for concern or find
it difficult to get to a doctor's appointment.Technology is making it easier to offer remote care and
support for older people, helping them remain independent. The information on the Internet can
prevent older people from taking their health into their own hands,"adds Caroline Abrahams,
charity director at Age UK.
However, services need to remain accessible to those who aren't online. While it's fine to
support older people getting online, those who choose not to or cannot do so,for whatever reason,
should not be treated like second-class citizens. They must still be able to access services in other
ways that suit them.
28.What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To list some important facts.
B.To raise a topic to be discussed.
C.To express the main idea of the text.
D.To introduce new advances in science.
29.What might be the big concern about offline older people?
A.They will suffer from terrible loneliness.
B.They will face risks from online banking.
C.They will fail to benefit from advanced online healthcare.
D.They will underestimate the role of modern technology in healthcare.
30.Why does the author mention Caroline Abrahams'words in paragraph 4?
A.To stress the popularity of the Internet.
B.To reveal technology is developing very fast now.
C.To indicate the big challenges an ageing society faces.
D.To show the Internet is of great importance to older people.

Egypt's Great Pyramids at Giza exist on a remote area of land at the edge of the Sahara Desert.
The inhospitable location has long puzzled archaeologists, some of whom had found evidence that
the Nile River once flowed near these pyramids in some capacity, promoting the landmarks'
construction starting 4,700 years ago.
Using satellite imaging and analysis of cores of sediment(沉积物),a new study published in
the journal Communications Earth Environment has mapped a 64-kilometer-long,dried-up
branch of the Nile, long buried beneath farmland and desert.
Lead author Eman Ghoneim said previous efforts to reconstruct Nile waterways were largely
limited to soil sample collections from small sites, mapping only small sectionshis is the first
study to provide a map of the long-lost ancient branch of the Nile River,"she noted.Ghoneim and
her team called this extinct branch Ahramat,Arabic for pyramids. It was about 0.5 km wide and at
least 25 meters deep, similar to the current Nile.
"The large size and extended length of the Ahramat Branch and its proximity()to the 31
pyramids in the study area strongly suggest a functional waterway of great importance,Ghoneim
said. She thought the river would have played a key role in ancient Egyptians'transportation of the
enormous amount of building materials and laborers needed for the pyramids'construction.
Ghoneim, born and raised in Egypt, was always curious about the pyramids'construction site.
She investigated with NSF funding and found geophysical data confirming it was an ancient Nile
arm.Earth cores revealed sandy sediment,consistent with a river channel at 25 meterss'depth
The study suggests"countless"temples may be buried along the Ahramat Branch's riverbank.
Why the river dried up remains unclear, but a likely cause is a period of drought and desertification.
32.What does the underlined word in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Unapproachable.B.Unlivable.
C.Inhabitable.
D.Unavailable.

D.The dryness of the Nile River branch.

A.It was not important to ancient Egyptians.

C.It dried up due to the digging of the pyramids.
D.It played a key role in the construction of the pyramids.

When the world-famous author J.K.Rowling gave a speech at a Harvard University
graduation ceremony, some may have a little surprised by the topic she chose:"The Benefits of
Failure".
Rowling's first novel was rejected by 12 publishers before it was finally published. But it was
this experience that helped her to succeed.36She discovered that she had a strong will, and
more discipline than she had expected.
The late Apple CEO Steve Jobs experienced failure early in his career, when he was fired
form the company he had co-founded.He felt despair and rejection. However,it was,in his view,
"the best thing that could have ever happened to me.The heaviness of being successful was
replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything3
Even Bill Gates has experienced failure. His first company was called Traf-Q-Data,but
unfortunately, its product didn't work.38But what Gates learnt from this experience helped
lay the groundwork for the global success that is now Microsoft. He didn't make the same mistake
twice.
39 At tough moments in their lives, they showed grit. But what is"grit"exactly?Put
simply,it's a passion for something and the determination to work hard and to stick with it.It's very
easy to give up when we hit setbacks, but people who have grit keep going.
So how can we become"grittier"?40If we can learn how to manage failure,we'll learn
how to succeed.By working through a series of failures,we're better prepared for the bigger
challenges we'll face in the adult world:We'll have the resilience we need to keep going. We'll
have true grit.
A.It was a total disaster.
B.As beginners they lack experience
