第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Crystal Ear
One day a friend asked my wife Jill if I wanted a hearing aid. “He certainly does,” replied Jill. After hearing about a remarkable new product, Jill finally got up the nerve to ask me if I’d ever thought about getting a hearing aid. “No way,” I said. “It would make me look 20 years older.” “No, no,” she replied. “This is entirely different. It’s Crystal Ear!”
Jill was right. Crystal Ear is different — not the old-styled body worn or over-the-ear aid, but an advanced personal sound system so small that it’s like contacts for your ears. And Crystal Ear is super-sensitive and powerful, too. You will hear sounds your ears have been missing for years. Crystal Ear will make speech louder, and the sound is pure and natural.
I couldn’t believe how tiny it is. It is smaller than the tip of my little finger and it’s almost invisible when worn. There are no wires, no behind-the-ear device. Put it in your ear and its ready-to-wear mold fits comfortably. Since it’s not too loud or too light, you may even forget that you’re wearing it! Use it at work or at play. And if your hearing problem is worse in certain situations, use Crystal Ear only when you need it.
Hearing loss, which occurs typically prior to teenage years, progresses throughout one’s lifetime. Although hearing loss is now the world’s number-one health problem, nearly 90 percent of people suffering hearing loss choose to leave the problem untreated. For many millions, treating hearing loss in a conventional way can involve numerous office visits, expensive testing and adjustments to fit your ear. Thanks to Crystal Ear, the “sound solution” is now convenient. Almost 90 percent of people with mild hearing loss, and millions more with just a little hearing dropoff, can be dramatically helped with Crystal Ear. Moreover, its superior design is energy-efficient, so batteries can last months. Crystal Ear is now available to help these people treat their hearing loss with a small hearing amplifier (扩音器).
21. Why did the writer refuse to wear a hearing aid at first?
A It would make him look like an old man.
B. He did not get the nerve to wear one.
C. It looked old-styled.
D. It was too costly.
22. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. Crystal Ear can signal where it is in case you cannot find it
B. you can wear Crystal Ear any time you like
C. you can even clean Crystal Ear yourself
D. you can even wear while swimming
23. What does the writer say about hearing loss?
A. About 10 percent of people wear hearing aids.
B. About 90 percent of people suffer hearing loss.
C It is one of the most painful diseases in the world.
D. Hearing loss is the world’s most frequent health problem.

Scientists have created a kind of amazing battery. The paper-thin batteries could one day become an environmentally-friendly option for powering smartphones and wearable electronic devices. The Singapore-developed batteries are made up of electrodes printed on both sides of a piece of cellulose paper. Once the battery has run out, it can be buried in soil, where it breaks down completely within a month.
In an experiment, the Singapore team demonstrated how a 4cm x 4cm square of paper battery could power a small electric fan for at least 45 minutes. Bending or twisting the battery did not interrupt the power supply. In another experiment using a 4cm x 4cm battery to power an LED, the scientists showed that despite cutting away parts of the paper battery, the LED remained lit, indicating that cutting does not affect the function of the battery.
The scientists think their paper battery could be integrated into devices such as smart phones that are already on the market, or biomedical sensors for health monitoring.
Professor Fan Hongjin from the research team said,“ Traditional batteries come in a variety of models and sizes, and choosing the right type for your device could be a troublesome process. Through our study, we show a simpler and cheaper way of manufacturing batteries by developing a single large piece of battery that can be cut to desired shapes and sizes without loss of its function. These features make our paper batteries ideal for integration in the types of devices that are gradually being developed.”
Professor Lee Seok Woo from the research team said, “We believe the paper battery we have developed could potentially help with the electronic waste problem, given that our paper battery is friendly to environment and does not require aluminum or plastic. Avoiding the packaging also enables our battery to store a higher amount of energy within a smaller system.”
24. What can be learned about the new batteries ?
A. They do no harm to the environment. B. They can break down in a week after use.
C. They can only be used for huge devices. D. They will replace ordinary batteries soon.
25. What may happen when the new batteries are bent ?
A. They will be useless immediately. B. They can still offer power as usual.
C. They will work for shorter time. D. They will become thinner than paper.
26. How does Professor Fan Hongjin feel about the future of the new batteries ?
A. Confident. B. Anxious. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
27. Which is the best title for the text ?
A. Scientists Predict the Future of Batteries.
B. The Best Batteries in History Have Been Made.
C. Ordinary Batteries and New Batteries Are Totally Different.
D. Scientists Make Batteries That Can Be Buried in Soil After Use.

Winona Ryder was once one of Hollywood’ s biggest stars. During the 1990s, she received critical praise and box office success. And in 2000, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But then it went wrong. In December 2001, she was arrested for shoplifting. She was caught leaving a Beverly Hills department store carrying thousands of dollars worth of clothes. Her sentence? 480 hours of community service in hospital. Afterwards, Winona quit acting for a few years. And she moved from los Angeles to San Francisco to get out of the spotlight. But now she’s on a comeback. She recently appeared in the award-winning Black Swan.
Bill Gates doesn’t seem like a bad boy. But on 29th April 1975 (just two weeks after founding Microsoft) he was arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico. What for? Speeding and driving without a driver’s license. But Bill’s rap sheet doesn’t end there. In 1977 he was arrested again, this time for speeding, driving his Porsche through a stop sign road and, once again, driving without a license.
Bill has never commented on his wild past. But a Microsoft spokesperson said, “It’s well known that when Bill was young, he didn’t have a very good driving record.”
Can someone with a criminal record become president of the Unite States? They certainly can. And George W. Bush did. In 1976, the 30-year old Bush was drinking in a bar near his parents’ house. A few hours later, he decided to drive home. But on the way, a police officer pulled him over. Bush had been driving suspiciously slowly. The future president was arrested for drunk driving. Bush kept his arrest secret for 24 years. But it leaked to the press just before the 2000 presidential election (which he won). He admitted it was true and said he had learned his lesson that night.
32. What punishment was given to Winona Ryder after she was caught shoplifting?

33. What is the meaning of the underlined part “rap sheet”?
A. Criminal record. B. Careless behavior.
C. Sentence. D. Impolite behavior.
34. How did the police know George W. Bush was drunk driving?
A. The police were checking drunk driving and caught him by chance.
B. Bush was driving so slowly as to cause the police’ s suspicion.
C. Bush drove through a stop sign.
D. Bush drove in the wrong direction.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Some famous people without morality.

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Never give up! Never give up!” chanted (吟诵) my two young children, Max and Charley, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mia. They had just left the beach, where they had spent the day building sand castles and splashing in the waves. Now, Mia was leading Max and Charley on another adventure: They were seeking the ice-cream truck, which was always difficult to find.
Over the years, Mia had become our family’s symbol of positivity. It was not a title she earned without effort, however. When my dad died, Mia was only forty years old and was left to raise me and my ten-year-old brother alone. She experienced a deeply sad event that could easily make anyone feel significantly less happy. She had been the one who had to make the decision to remove our dad from life support fourteen days after he died in a car accident.
My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. She was always up for a new challenge, whether that was hiking across the steep (陡峭的), rocky road of a mountaintop in Austria to get a better view of the breathtaking landscape, or signing up for tap-dancing classes at fifty. Leading by example, Mom taught us just how much one could achieve with a positive attitude.
She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren. Before starting her adventure with Max and Charley on that hot July afternoon, Mia heard the familiar clang (叮当声) of the ice-cream man’s bell from her beach chair. She turned and saw him briefly, spotting his green shirt and catching the gleam of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared over the dunes (沙丘). But you need to be fast because he doesn’t stay for very long after you hear his bell.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Max and Charley were disappointed when they didn’t catch the truck in time that day

After about twenty minutes of walking, Max’s faith in the mission began to waver(动摇).

A. It would make him look like an old man.
B. He did not get the nerve to wear one.
C. It looked old-styled.
D. It was too costly.
22. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A Crystal Ear can signal where it is in case you cannot find it
B. you can wear Crystal Ear any time you like
C. you can even clean Crystal Ear yourself
D. you can even wear while swimming
23. What does the writer say about hearing loss?
A. About 10 percent of people wear hearing aids.
B. About 90 percent of people suffer hearing loss.
C. It is one of the most painful diseases in the world.
D. Hearing loss is the world’s most frequent health problem.
【答案】21. A 22. B 23. D

A. She was forbidden acting for a few years.
B. She was put in prison for 480 hours.
C. She did community service for 480 hours.
D. She was forgiven for her outstanding acting skills.
33 What is the meaning of the underlined part “rap sheet”?
B. Some famous people and their life stories.
C. Some interesting stories of famous people.
D. Some arrests of famous people.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. D

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Max and Charley were disappointed when they didn’t catch the truck in time that day.

After about twenty minutes of walking, Max’s faith in the mission began to waver(动摇).

【答案】Max and Charley were disappointed when they didn’t catch the truck in time that day. Mia’s eyes sparkled and she said, “Never give up!” She explained that the truck might be gone, but they could find it at its next stop. They walked block after block. Not knowing which direct ion the truck had taken, they had to make their best guess about where to search. The kids’ tiny legs were tired, but they carried on regardless, continuing to chant, “Never give up!”
After about twenty minutes of walking, Max’s faith in the mission began to waver (动摇).He wondered out loud, “Maybe we should give up. We have been walking pretty far and haven’t seen the truck yet.” Then he collapsed, resting his aching legs. Mia bent over and patted him gently on the shoulder. Wearing an encouraging smile, Mia comforted, “Never give up!” with Charley nodding in agreement. Max looked up, thought for a while and jumped to his feet. Just two blocks later, they found it. The kids screamed with excitement, “Never give up!” Simple though it is, that phrase has become our battle cry for the challenges we face.
