Passage 3
On 25 June, 2024, Li Chunlai watched eagerly as a capsule carrying the first pieces of the far side of the Moon landed on Earth. “Samples, I finally got you,” he thought. The lander spent two days digging and collecting material on the lunar surface before sending the samples back to Earth.
After arriving on Earth, the capsule was in Li’s lab at the National Astronomical Observatories in Beijing. It took Li and his team several days to get out the precious material from its sealed vault (密封舱), using various tools. To protect the material, they stored it in a nitrogen-filled (充满氮气的) box. The powder within was “fluffy” (松软的) and “very fresh”, says Li. The samples are lighter in colour than those from the Moon’s near side. “It’s very special,” says Li.
The rocks and dust were collected from the deepest part of the South Pole-Aitken Basin, which is thought to be the largest and oldest impact crater (撞击坑) on the Moon. The site was chosen because of the variety of the material it might contain. The samples are “like a recorder of all these historical events”, says Yi Xu, a planetary scientist at Macau University of Science and Technology. Studying them will help to uncover “lots of secrets of the Moon”, says Yuqi Qian, a planetary geologist at the University of Hong Kong.
Top among them is why the lunar far side looks so different from the near side— the crust (月壳) is thicker and not as enriched with radioactive elements (放射性元素). “Understanding the Moon’s history is key to learning about the pasts of other planets such as Mars, Venus and Mercury,” says James Head, a planetary geoscientist at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, who has collaborated extensively with Li. “The Moon is a keystone to planetary evolution (演化) in general.”
Planetary scientists all over the world now want to get their gloves on the samples. Li’s lab has distributed (分发) some pieces to teams across China. But it will be a few years before researchers outside the country get access, says Li, to give Chinese researchers priority. A flood of scientific findings are expected in the coming months. Li is already looking ahead to China’s next sample-return missions—to a near-Earth asteroid (近地小行星) in 2025, and to Mars several years later. “The insight generated so far from this year’s Moon mission,” he says, “is just the beginning”.
1.Why did scientists choose the South Pole-Aitken Basin to collect samples?
A.Because it is the closest area to Earth.
B.Because it has the freshest powder on the Moon.
C.Because it is the easiest place to land a spacecraft.
D.Because it may contain various types of materials.
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The samples may help scientists understand other planets’ history.
B.The far side of the Moon has a thinner crust than the near side.
C.The Moon samples will only be studied by Chinese scientists.
D.The lander collected samples for over a week on the Moon.
3.What is the passage mainly about?
A.China’s Moon samples’ return and their importance.
B.The celebration of China’s space mission success.
C.The differences between the Moon’s two sides.
D.The tools used to collect lunar samples.
Passage 4
The Rise of Niche Travel: A New Era of Exploration
Niche travel, which focuses on specialized interests like literary tours, eco-tourism, or cultural immersion (浸染), has become a growing trend globally. Unlike traditional tourism, it meets travelers’ needs of seeking unique, personalized experiences rather than sightseeing only. This shift reflects changing consumer preferences and technological advancements that make customized trips more accessible (可使用的).
Two factors fuel this trend. First, the desire for authenticity (真实性): modern travelers increasingly value cultural depth over superficial “bucket-list” checkmarks. For example, Hemingway enthusiasts explore Cuban bars he frequented, gaining insights into his literary inspirations. Second, technology enables customization. Search engines and AI tools help users easily plan trips around niche hobbies, from stargazing retreats to vegan food trails.
Such travel fosters cultural understanding and environmental awareness. Eco-tours in Costa Rica, for instance, educate visitors on rainforest conservation while supporting local economies. Additionally, it empowers small businesses. Family-run guesthouses or artisan workshops thrive (兴旺) when featured in niche itineraries, promoting sustainable tourism over mass-market chains.
However, niche travel faces obstacles. Limited infrastructure (基础设施) in remote areas can raise costs, and overspecialization risks excluding casual tourists. Moreover, misinformation online may lead to mismatched expectations—a “literary tour” advertised as immersive might only offer shallow historical tidbits (轶事). Travelers must research thoroughly to avoid disappointment.
As globalization continues, niche travel will likely expand. Younger generations, prioritizing self-expression over conformity, will drive demand for trips reflecting their identities. To succeed, the industry must balance customization with accessibility, ensuring diverse travelers can participate without sacrificing quality or affordability.
1.The underlined word “conservation” in Paragraph 3 most likely means ________.
A.destruction of forests B.protection of natural resources
C.expansion of tourist areas D.development of new technologies
2.What can we know about younger travelers from the article?
A.They prefer traditional sightseeing to niche experiences.
B.They avoid using technology to customize itineraries.

D.To advertise specific niche travel destinations.
Passage 5
This winter, Harbin in Heilongjiang province has become a very popular place for tourists. People from all over China are coming to visit it.
Online promotion has played an important role in the tourism attraction of Harbin. A popular saying on Sina Weibo that many people are attracted to is: “It’s not that they can’t afford to go to Northern Europe, but that Harbin is more value for money.” However, the true reason is what the people in Harbin have done for the tourists.
After the overcrowding problem took place on the opening day of the Harbin Ice and Snow World, the Harbin Bureau of Culture and Tourism requested improvement. The park quickly apologizes and refunds (退款). The local restaurant has adjusted their serving style of frozen pears to suit visitors from Southern China, showcasing careful service based on their needs. This way, combined with residents providing free ride services to tourists, reflects the efforts of the people of Harbin to leave a positive impression on all tourists.
Following Harbin’s lead, many Chinese cities have taken a series of measures to promote winter tourism, forming a competitive “involution (内卷)” to attract tourists. Although regional competition is understandable, there have also been some mistakes in this process.
For example, two actors were hired, one female and one male, to play the female character “Daji” in Investiture of the Gods (《封神演义》) and interact with tourists in Yuntai Mountain in Henan province. People see them having physical contact, such as kissing visitors’ hands and touching their faces. This wasn’t a good way to show Chinese culture.
At the same time, competition among peers has made editors from various cultural and tourism social media regions to make extra efforts. For example, the Shaanxi account continued to release videos to compete even after 2 am.
What is truly important is not just following trends and posting slogans online, but developing interesting local attractions based on tourism resources. This means having nice places to visit, good hotels, easy travel, and tasty food. Doing these things well is what really makes a trip memorable and helps the place get more visitors.
1.What does the popular saying on Sina Weibo suggest about Harbin?
A.Harbin is more expensive than Northern Europe.
B.Harbin is not as good as Northern Europe.
C.People prefer Harbin over Northern Europe because it offers better value for money.
D.People cannot afford to visit Northern Europe.
2.How did the Harbin Bureau of Culture and Tourism respond to the overcrowding problem?
A.By closing the Harbin Ice and Snow World permanently.
B.By ignoring the problem.
C.By requesting improvements and offering refunds.
D.By promoting Harbin more aggressively online.
3.Why do many Chinese cities follow Harbin and try to promote winter tourism?
A.They want to copy Harbin’s success in attracting tourists with online promotions.
B.Because they want to solve the problem of overcrowding in Harbin.
C.They are trying to promote Harbin culture by hiring actors to interact with tourists.
D.They hope to provide tourists with a more authentic(真实的) Chinese culture.
4.What is the most important aspect of making travel unforgettable according to the article?
A.Following trends and posting slogans online.
B.Developing interesting local attractions based on tourism resources.
C.Having competitions among different cultural and tourism social media.
D.Hiring actors for interactive events with tourists.
5.What is the main idea of the article?
A.Harbin is the most important city which is worth visiting in China.
B.Online promotions are the most important aspect of attracting tourists.
C.Local attractions and good services are key to successful tourism promotions.
D.Chinese cities should avoid any form of competition in tourism.
Passage 6
Ever since we learned that the surface of Mars is cold and dead, people have wondered if there is a way to make it friendlier to life. Problems ahead include deadly UV rays and salty soil. But the biggest is that the surface temperature of Mars averages about -60°C. A recent study published in Science Advances put forward a revolutionary way to take one step closer to our age-old dream to live on Mars.
In the study, the researchers designed particles (颗粒) that look like tiny short sticks in order to keep the heat and scatter sunlight towards the surface, strengthening Mars’ natural greenhouse effect. This study shows that if the particles were sent into Mars’ atmosphere (大气) continuously at 30L per second, the planet would warm by more than 10°C, to temperatures suitable for microbial (微生物的) life—an important first step towards making Mars suitable for humans to live on.
What makes this method stand out among others is its use of materials available on Mars, making it far more practical than earlier ideas that depended on transporting materials from the Earth. And the new method is over 5,000 times more effective than earlier ones to globally warm Mars. This method would still take decades (数十年). But as Edwin Kite, a researcher in the team, said, “At least this suggests that the difficulty of warming Mars to allow liquid (液态的) water is not as big as thought before.”
However, much work remains to be done. We don’t know exactly how fast the particles would cycle out of Mars’ atmosphere, for example. Mars does have water and clouds, and, as the planet warms, it’s possible that water would begin to turn into tiny drops around the particles and fall back to the surface as rain. This would result in a decrease of particles in Mars’ atmosphere, reducing the warming effect. Kite noted, “Climate feedbacks are really difficult to model correctly. We would need more data from both Mars and the Earth and must proceed carefully to ensure the effects.”
Besides, the researchers stress that the study focuses on warming Mars to temperatures suitable for microbial life and possibly growing food crops—not on creating a breathable atmosphere for humans. Anyway, this research shows new possibilities for exploration and could bring us one step closer to our long-held dream of living on Mars.
1.According to the recent study, the particles could ________.
A.do harm to the microbial life B.deal with UV rays and salty soil
C.increase the temperature on Mars D.build a greenhouse for men to live in
2.What can we learn about the new method?
A.Humans can breathe on Mars if it works properly.
B.Its full effect will be seen soon as the particles are sent.
C.Materials from the Earth will be transported to Mars.
D.Drops of water with the particles in may fall back as rain.
3.What is the passage mainly about?
A.A more practical way to heat Mars. B.An age-old dream to explore Mars.
C.Chance of creating Mars’ atmosphere. D.Difficulty of making Mars more livable.

Passage 2
Seventeen-year-old Tom Davidson hasn’t left his home since he was 15. The last time he went out was two years ago. He was walking to catch a bus when he was hit on the head by a sign falling from a building. He spent more than two months in hospital and doctors told him he was lucky to be alive. The accident left Tom with agoraphobia: the idea of being outdoors makes him feel extremely anxious.
The problem is that Tom loves travelling. Before his accident, Tom spent most weekends exploring his home city of London by bus, underground train and his scooter, and he looked forward to holidays abroad with his parents. Now the idea of driving in a car to France or taking a plane to Italy terrifies him.
However, there is a way that Tom can still visit the most remote corners of the world without leaving the security of his home: Google Maps. In the last year and a half, Tom has visited every country in the world where Google Maps has been and taken photos. Using “street view”, he has walked down the streets of the world’s most famous cities, he has seen all the world’s most amazing geographical features and he has visited places in the world that he didn’t know existed: all of this from the comfort of his home.
Tom’s virtual travel is more than just a hobby-it has become an art project. He has taken more than 5,000 screenshots of places he has visited and last week, there was an exhibition of his best photos at a school near his home (but of course, he didn’t go). Tom also hopes that his online journeys will help him eventually to overcome his agoraphobia. As he discovers more places that he wants to visit one day, he is becoming more and more determined to leave his home. And his dream, if he can, is to work in the travel industry, for example, as a flight attendant or a tour guide.
1.How long has Tom Davidson stayed inside his home?
2.What does the word “agoraphobia” mean in this passage?

“I love Jin Yong’s wuxia stories,” Jin told Gusu Evening News. “I also love history. In the seventh grade, I traveled to Wuzhen, where Prince Xiao Tong from the Liang Dynasty once lived, and I was inspired (受启发) to write a wuxia story based on (以……为根据) him.”
In a video interview with Xinhua, Jin looks a little bit shy. But when it comes to writing, he becomes someone bold. He shared a lot of his writing experiences actively. “I wrote around the clock as my ideas kept coming. After about 20 days, I finished more than 300 pages,” Jin said.
Jin’s writing skills might come from his love of reading and family support. In primary school, he read four books every week. In junior high school, where schoolwork is heavy, he still reads three to four books a month.
“My father loves history, so we often talk about our reading experiences and share our different opinions,” Jin said. “My mom takes me to bookstores and writers’ lectures. She also took care of me when I wrote the book, reminding me not to stay up too late.”

Passage 4
I’m sitting in my favourite spot on a hill, surrounded by trees and soft green grass. The wind gently blows, and the sun shines brightly in the early morning. It’s the perfect temperature, neither too hot nor too cold. This place brings me peace, and I feel calm. I come here whenever I can, though it’s rare now. It holds a special place in my heart, especially because I’ve always imagined visiting places where nature and ancient buildings are closely connected, like the peaceful temples hidden in the mountains.
But now, the reality is different. I switched off my mask, and released electrodes (电极) from my skin. I know my time here is over. I’m in a spaceship, with artificial light, metal floors and narrow rooms — nothing like the green hills and trees I once knew. The peaceful breeze is replaced by the noise of machines. The long journey to Mars is lonely. That’s why I need some virtual (虚拟的) activities to stay calm.
We are on the greatest mission of humanity, but I worry about losing what makes us human. If we reach Mars, we should do more than just build shelters—we must protect nature there, just as we should have done on Earth. If we fail, Mars will become another empty planet.
Let’s not repeat the mistakes of the past. Our true strength lies in caring for our planet, not just settling in new worlds.
1.What is the writer’s favourite place?
2.Does the writer feel comfortable in the spaceship?
3.Why does the writer need some virtual activities?
4.What does the underlined phrase “the greatest mission of humanity” refer to?

Passage 5
What would it be like to live on Mars? The movie The Martian has given us some answers. It follows an astronaut named Mark who is left on Mars for nearly two years. In order to live on Mars, Mark finds a way to grow potatoes in a special room. He wears a spacesuit when he is outside his “home”. However, Mark has to face many difficulties, such as dust storms.
In fact, just like in the movie, walking on the surface of Mars without a suit is a bad idea. Your skin would be peeled away like pieces of burning paper; your blood would turn to steam (水蒸气) and you would die within half a minute. There is bad radiation (辐射) and dust storms. So people would most likely live in underground homes. If technology improves, more people and construction (建筑) materials may be sent to Mars. Only then could people build houses on the surface. And life would start to look like that on Earth. On Mars, people could grow crops, such as wheat and potatoes, in special boxes. They could help make oxygen for humans to breathe like trees do on Earth. But it won’t be an easy thing.
How can people move around Mars? People have suggested cars, bikes, trains, cable cars and planes. However, there are no official plans saying exactly what humans will use.
1.What does Mark do to live on Mars?
2.How long would a person live on Mars at most without a spacesuit?
3.What is “oxygen” used for, according to the passage?
4.Will life on Mars be similar to that on Earth with the improvement of technology?
5.Which way of moving around Mars (such as cars, bikes, cable cars) do you like best? Why?
Passage 6
Oliver Twist (选段1)
Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse. When he arrived in this hard world, it was doubtful, for some time, whether he would live beyond the first three days. He lay on a hard little bed and struggled to start breathing. However, Oliver managed to draw his first breath and then announced his arrival to the rest of the workhouse by crying loudly.
His mother raised her pale young face from the pillow and whispered, “Let me see the child, and die.”
The surgeon turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. “You must not talk about dying yet,” he said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold.
She imprinted her cold white lips passionately on its forehead, then stared wildly around the room, fell back and died.
“Poor dear!” said the nurse, hurriedly dangling in front of the infant’s eyes a red glass bottle.
The surgeon began to put on his coat. “The baby is weak and will probably have difficulties,” he said, “If so, give it a little milk to keep it quiet.” Then he looked at the dead woman and said, “The mother was a good-looking girl. Where did she come from?”
“She was brought here last night,” replied the old woman. “She was found lying in the street. She’d walked some distance, judging by her shoes, which were worn to pieces. Where she came from, where she was going to, or what her name was, nobody knows.”
The surgeon lifted the mother’s left hand. “The old story,” he said sadly, shaking his head. “No wedding ring, I see. Ah! Good night.”
And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse.
1.Where was Oliver born?
2.What was the mother’s last wish before her death?
3.What did the surgeon suggest to keep the baby quiet?
4.Who took care of Oliver at the very end of this passage?

C.They rely on travel agencies to plan their vacations.
D.They are driving the demand for identity-reflecting trips.
3.What is the main purpose of the article?
A.To criticize the high costs of niche travel.

4.It refers to “travelling to and settling on Mars”.
5.The writer believes humans should do more than just build shelters and should protect nature on Mars. 6.Any reasonable answer is ok. Answer Example: I would want a virtual place. That’s a quiet library filled with my favorite books and a small garden with flowers. Because books and nature remind me of the curiosity and love for beauty that make me human. Such a place would help me feel connected to my emotions and memories, just like the hill does for the writer, even when I’m far away in space.
I would want a virtual version of my hometown’s park. It has a lake where I used to feed ducks and a tree I climbed as a kid. This place is important because it holds my childhood memories and makes me feel connected to who I am, even in space.

Why?
【答案】
